Hoxton Bakehouse in Winchester

The Hoxton Bakehouse cafes seem to be springing up in the more affluent towns of Hants and Sussex. We wanted a quick, hot lunch and had toasted sourdough sandwiches, coffee and cakes. Everything was first class. Lovely bread, generously filled sandwich (I had pastrami, cheese and pickles) good coffee and lovely cakes. Not too expensive and friendly service. The cafe has a informal "hipster" feel about it. Would definitely visit a Hoxton again.

Never disappointed with the bread I buy, the few times I have stopped for a drink or snack it’s been really good. The staff are warm and welcoming which makes you feel like a valued customer.

We stopped here as looked like a great place to grab a coffee and the bread looked delicious. The sourdough did not disappoint, but unfortunately the coffee was very disappointing to say the least. It's a shame, as the bread really was good, and the pastries certainly looked tasty, but we did not purchase on this occasion.

We were looking for a little coffee house in a city which has lots of great coffee places, and mistakenly thought this was a cool coffee place... we couldn't have been more wrong. The coffee was decidedly average, the pastry was poor, and it was cold both metaphorically and environmentally. To be honest, it had very little going for it except what sounded like a misleadingly cool name. Sorry, but we won't be back.

Love the fun branding of this great bakery, lots of lovely fresh bread and pastries and the cinnamon buns are amazing

Really nice coffee here, especially since they roast their own, and you can also get some really great artisan bread at the same time as a top-quality fresh pastry or cookie, as well as some vegan options that are awesome as well.

I regularly buy my morning coffee here, I’ve never found the staff all that friendly, But today I was verbally attacked by two members off staff, and all because I wanted to use cash and not card. Saying they need to wash their hand, being one of their big issues, something that should be done in a regular basis when handling food I should say? So I told them it needs to be personal choice, if a person wants to pay cash then let them pay with it, or change the policy to card only. I don’t appreciate being told what to do by a couple of young girls, basically making me feel unclean. I will never buy coffee from here again. I’m utterly appalled.

Overpriced, over baked, inedible soughdogh bread. No alternative to soughdough bread. Expected more from a business that has the word bakehouse in its name

If you love delicious bread & pastries then do make the time to visit Hoxtons Bakehouse. Fabulous choice of mouthwatering pastries & buns both sweet & savoury to tantalise your taste buds. The savoury ones are divine so I opted to take a couple of boxes home too & so pleased I did. Warmed up & shared with family proved a hit. My next visit to Winchester will definitely include another visit ..... go enjoy the calories!

Burnt croissant and complete lack of apology from the company when I let them know. They basically told me all their food is perfect. Maybe a one off but an apology would have been appreciated.

we got takeaway buns and coffee every morning we were there. The sweet buns were really good and it was tempting to get more than one. The coffee was also good

I have been going to Hoxton for my daily coffee for as long as I have been living in Winchester. In pre-Covid times, I would stop by on my way to the train station. I would actually take the long way round just for that. There were and still are other cafes on my way, but I always stopped by Hoxton - because they make the best coffee in town. That is not to say others make bad coffee, Orangery folks make a bloody good latte but Hoxton coffee and pastries are better (don’t have to take my word for it - just give it a try). Hoxton also opens early at 0800 and since it is a bakery, everything is available from the get-go and they don’t have to wait for deliveries (unlike other cafes). When Covid hit and we went into the first lockdown, it was the only cafe which stayed open. At the height of first lockdown, you could often find yourself waiting 30 minutes to get a coffee and a cinnamon bun (best buns in town - no one even comes close). If one were to be cynical, one could attribute the long queues to the supply-demand issue but the queues have persisted since then. Even now when most of the outdoor restrictions are gone, and Hoxton lets in 4 customers at a time, I often find myself waiting 5-10 minutes to get in. Hoxton is part of my daily routine and even though I make a perfectly serviceable cup of coffee at home, I still go there every morning. They have the best coffee (part of the credit also goes to River Coffee folks and their lovely Source blend), pastries, and bread in town. Their ciabattas are amazing. Actually they do pretty great toasties and sandwiches too. Staff is just wonderful, and they are nice even to the grumpy old farts who frequent the place. They happily indulge idiosyncratic preferences (I like my cinnamon buns toasted and they always oblige). Staff is also welcoming of pets (always a good sign). So if you live in Winchester, or visiting, drop by - they have good coffee, pastries, and people!

The staff really treat you well here. You feel.comfortable walking through the door. The coffee and buns just turn this from a pleasant coffeeshop to something I always look forward to when visiting Winchester. Keep it up!

Hoxton bakehouse produces consistently excellent bread, cakes, coffee and sandwiches - something which Winchester was missing before they opened. Whether you are taking away or sitting in, the atmosphere is always welcoming and relaxed. The Hoxton team behind the counter are super-friendly, helpful and courteous. If you haven't already, I highly recommend a visit!

Lovely products but goodness me what dreadful customer service. Girls behind the counter were disinterested, unhelpful and unfriendly. It’s a shame but I wouldn’t return, some investment needs to go into training your staff.

This place is sourdough heaven. Bread loaf and the apple buns to take back home. I am so pleased I found this place, I love a good bakery!

Ordinarily this would have been a very positive review of Hoxton Bakehouse whose bread is arguably the best in WInchester... BUT... recently there have been a number of aspects which have seriously detracted and made us start questioning their focus on quality and professionalism.Firstly we cannot always go to the shop in person due to childcare or work commitments and have been put off doing so given that it takes soooooo long to be served. The staff seem very relaxed about this and don't appear to recognise people are waiting outside in the cold for them to open (once it was near 8.10am when they opened after already waiting in a queue for 15mins which believe me is irritating when it's drizzling). Even then, they weren't ready and were still setting up so it took a long time to get served. Other shops try to get through queues more quickly by poking their head out of the door and taking drinks orders from the whole queue or asking people in the queue what type of bread they want and whether they want it sliced - which takes a long time. None of these concepts are taken into account and each person is served in a slow, ponderous way. Secondly, deliveries. We think it's a great service to offer people the ability to pre-order and have bread, eggs etc delivered once a week. But with our last order (and 1 or 2 before that) it was obvious the bread being used for delivery was not fresh and that customers were being palmed off with old bread from the previous day which had not been sold. Today's was borderline stale.In summary a great shame. We love Hoxton's bread but the owner needs to put his/her foot down to address these points and make sure the quality and professionalism doesn't drop with the increase in popularity or we and others will probably look elsewhere.

A lovely selection of delicious cakes and buns. They're not cheap but defintely worth it as a treat. Really good coffee too, on one visit the Barista was even taking requests for the Latte Art.

Make great cakes and coffee. Let down by short opening hours and often nothing left later on in the day. They make fantastic cookies, which sadly seem to have stopped being made recently.

The best croissants and baked goods in winchester by a long way are found here - the coffee is great, and the artwork is spectacular on the top! All the staff are smiling and happy all the time, and the mocha praline cinnamon sticky bun is out of this world yumminess- if you want to feel good on a rainy drab day go here for a full stimulation package and leave feeling great . I did. .... and I’m going again today

I had to be in Winchester early to pick something up, I had heard that this place was good, so decided to pay it a visit. Staff were friendly & welcoming, busy, but attentive. I had a coffee and a Pecan pastry while I looked at the bread and other delights. Coffee was good, pastry was excellent. I bought a couple of loaves and a box of pastries to take home. The bag of goodies wasn't cheap, but it is excellent artisan produce. The bread lasted well, the pastries were fantastic. Well worth a visit. Note : they aren't open on Monday or Tuesday.

Great coffee, the best Baristas, and good food. Their bread is awsome. Thank you Hoxton Bakehouse. Always enjoy our visits to Hoxton Bakehouse. Relaxed, good service definitely recommend.

Took 10 whole minutes to get a coffee and I was the only one in there - three members of staff taking their time, chatting to each other, completely oblivious that some people might want to get to work.....

I didn’t think there were any decent coffee spots in Winchester until I met @baristaprogress on Instagram. I had to check out Hoxton and was really really impressed! I’m in the coffee industry and am very critical, but I have nothing negative to say about this place, service or coffee! Everything was spot on 12/10! I’ll be back for tons more coffee and friendly service!!!

Popped in for quick lunch. Not expecting such a good quality sandwich. The Rye New Yorker is a star. Not many bakery can produce this quality of rye bread. The Ham and Coleslaw are just as good.Seatings are fairly simple, but good enough for quick lunch.Staff are really friendly.Good find.

We popped in here today for a coffee and cake. We were not disappointed. The flat whites were made to perfection and our choice of pastries were delicious. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. I would recommend wholeheartedly.

Hoxton Bakehouse is a nice looking little eaterie with a bright decor of white painted brick, white tiles and stainless steel trunking etc. We enjoyed a couple of pleasingly different sandwiches on fabulous rustic and sourdough breads, which were so much nicer than the routine, chain company variety.

Winchester has some excellent coffee shops, so being in the running for the best in town is quite something. It helps that their buns and bread are to die for, but their locally roasted coffee is what sells me on the place. Beware, it’s quite tiny, but if you can get a seat it’s well worth it.

We never ate here but we had plenty of meals from a visit. Buying their bread every weekend was a must. A treat. An obligation. It's moreish, perfect, tasty, yummy . . . you get the picture? It costs more than a sliced brown loaf from your local local. But as we all know in life, you get what you pay for.

We ate avocado on toast. Omg the bread tastes amazing.. next time I will be arranging to take some home. The avocado was piled high.

This bakery/cafe is brilliant. The coffee is fantastic, their loafs of bread are Devine, even if slightly pricy, and the atmosphere is lovely. The staff are all friendly and very welcoming. 5**** for sure.

Having now had a number of the cinnamon buns/ huge croissants and rye cookies, I feel able to recommend to people that they stop by this little place and get a sweet breakfast treat en route to the office/ gym/ school/ meeting or whatever you have on that day. It will make the start to your day a happy one. Can’t comment on the eat-in breakfast/lunch options, but the coffee is strong and tastes good enough (sometimes a tad bitter). Stick to the buns / pastries.

Very disappointed, trendy looking decor (post industrial) and hipster waiters do not a good eating place make.

This bakery needs to get to grips with it’s production problems. For the second time in two weeks I have driven over 10 miles to the Winchester shop at lunchtime to buy bread only to be informed that they had sold out. From the bread storage space in the shop it’s obvious that demand will always outstrip supply, so please increase production and deliveries or increase bread storage and display in the shop.

Really enjoyed a coffee and a delicious toasted sandwich. They serve an array of sandwiches made with sourdough bread and savoury croissants with interesting fillings which change from time to time. Great Cinnamon buns too.

Best avocado on toast in Winchester, hands down! I’m a huge brunch person, tried them all, Josies, flat whites, dispensary etc... Avocado at Horton is reasonably priced but also the butter they use on the toast was incredible (you can actually buy a block of this too! If any is left! It’s so popular you’d be lucky to get some!).

This is a genuine coffee place for people who value quality coffee!

Bought some sourdough bread and cinnamon buns which we enjoyed over several days. The range of food available in the cafe was good, but rather on the expensive side for what it is. We will go buy more bread from here in the future and enjoy one of their coffees over a brunch.

Love the sourdough, always my favourite and the extra bread and sweet treats are also awesome. Cardamon buns are one of my favourites.

I was in Hoxton this morning buying some bread to take home as previously have tried their goods and they never fail to disappoint. Coffee this time was not as good as last time, tasted a bit burnt?

A great bakery for Winchester! All the sweet pastries have been a hit with my family, especially the cruffins! Friendly staff too.

Hoxton is my new favourite location for a quick take away coffee, a sit down treat or a beautiful lunch. Couldn't recommend it more highly and the staff are so friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable about all of the baked goods too!

This bakery is such a lovely new asset to Winchester. I have seen them around the markets but can now say I am thoroughly addicted to their bloomer sourdough. The quality and passion is very clear here... just wished I lived closer or better still upstairs so I could buy a loaf everyday!

Found this little hidden gem whilst on a visit to Winchester, this is possibly one of the best cups of coffee I’ve ever had in my life! On top of the excellent coffee, my partner and I treated ourselves to a couple of their delicious pastries, I had the chocolate tart and my partner had a cinnamon bun, both were so tasty and well worth it! We weren’t familiar with hoxton before visiting so didn’t realise that they produce all their bread and pastries freshly everyday. We have subsequently ended up buying their bread every week! Would certainly recommend hoxton to all food and coffee lovers out there!

Had lunch at The Hoxton Bakehouse Winchester with a friend. Amazing avocado on sourdough and lemon and blackcurrent tart to follow. Took home some croissants and pain au chocolate for breakfast next morning and they were the same top notch quality. Everything isxmade with quality ingredients...and it shows.

Overpriced and mediocre... could do with more selection. I had a pain au chocolate and it was rock hard ... not what I’d expect for £2

During a flying visit to Winchester, I consider myself incredibly lucky to have swung by this bakery - friendly staff, great coffee, some outdoor seating (dog-friendly), PROPER bread and OUT OF THIS WORLD pastries. Don’t do what I did and just buy one, take as many as you can carry!

This is a new addition to the Winchester food and drink menu. The staff are really excellent both knowledgeable and friendly. The Coffee is great and the pastries and sandwiches are very tempting. The award winning Bakehouse not only supplies the visitor with superb refreshments but also sells it’s award winning bread. All round a win win situation.

Yep, think this place will take over as my number 1 coffee stop. Wow, amazing breads, love sourdough and they seem to do it so very well from their own bakery too. Pastries, the Claw, was superb. Great staff as well. Only critique is there is no where enough room! You just can’t seem to get a seat, but that’s because its so good i suppose. Love it, putting costa and Starbucks to shame.

I've been buying Hoxton bread and pastries from farmers markets for a while but this was my first visit to their new Winchester coffee shop.

I'm so pleased we have these delightful Bakehouse on our doorstep. They also have a stall at the farmers market too with even more choices! I often buy a loaf of bread, but I also love their cakes, pastries and their toast! The staff are lovely, the space is lovely and the food is awesome. The photograph attached is my toast at home but their toast is delicious.
