The best restaurants in Test Valley South East

Asked for a bottle of Australian Chardonnay and a French Organic wine was served. The wrong meal was served, got a main course salad which was starter sized, missing roasted sweet potato, which was the star of the meal, no dressing, awful. £159 for 5 people - rip off. Wanted £20 tip which they didn't get. Service was slow and they hurried us off the table at 4pm, as if they had someone else wanting our table!!

Failed to have a sign on the door that they are only catering for the hotel only. Waited half an hour with four children for them to open the door, had to ring them ourselves to find out what was happening and person on the phone didn’t sound apologetic at all.

Portway Inn, was the best place for breakfats for my family and I. we use to go each week. Todday we were turned away and was told they no longer accept outside customers only residents only. I have taken a picture of each of these. There terms and conditions, there website, their menu and when you walk towards the reception entrance from car park, no where does it say residents only can get breakfast. what a waste of time and fuel. I am so disappointed.

Drinks were good, Chloe was helpful and kind and we had a really nice time and we found a nice new drink recommended by the bartender

We were looking for a lunch stop whilst on the A303 near to Thruxton and found The White Horse just by chance. What a find! We had a delicious lunch and will certainly return here again. Highly recommend it if you’re in the area

A lovely open modern barn building, with (very unusual and appealing) gifty merchandise at one end and the cafe/restaurant at the other end. If you don't like big open plan then this isn't the place for you. Tasteful interior, with very nice seating, clean and bright. it is a 'take a tray and pay at the till' place, using your table number for ordering hot food. I have to say that although I only had a jacket potato it was the best I've ever had anywhere. My fellow diners agreed that the food quality was very good and good value. This really is a lovely location for a nursery and garden centre, even approaching down the long winding drive is very rural and atmospheric.There is a delightful and historical feel to the areas where plants are kept, as there are tall walls and the way the plants are laid out for sale makes it feel like you are walking around an interesting walled garden. A really nice place to spend a while if you are a keen gardener, with very healthy and some unusual plants.

The food is always lovely here and always lots of tables. It’s nice to look around the shop as well. The nursery & shop are also good to stroll through after a nice meal.

I have been to the Potters Heron for lunch a couple of times during the summer and had really good sandwiches - fresh bread and fillings. Today my friend and I had medium sliced, poor quality brown bread and my egg mayonnaise was mostly mayonnaise. My side salad was gritty. I spoke to the two members of staff and said that I was not impressed with the quality for the price (£7) and to pass it on, but heard nothing further. I had a similar experience earlier this year but thought that things had improved over the summer. It's such a shame, because when they're good they're very good but when they're bad it's such a disappointment. I won't be going back any time soon.

Staff were not attentive and seemed to be unaware that you required service even though we requested a menu. Ordered pizza, salad and fries. At 50 minutes we still had not been served even though we had asked what had happened to our order. In the end I asked for a refund. Other tables were also experiencing a long wait. What a shame as we were really looking forward to the meal

Booked here for Sunday lunch. We were not disappointed. The cooking, quality of ingredients and the quantity was exceptional. We will definitely book again

Amazing staff! Beautiful fresh food and they’ve added American burgers to the menu! The chips and curry sauce is always perfect!

Have eaten here regularly for 12 months. Always been satisfied and happy after our visit. Two weeks ago there was definite change in atmosphere, it was almost empty and staff not their usual chatty selves. Different manager. The lasagne always came with chips. That day no chips, despite confirming it did come with chips. It came with some kind of bread - not garlic! A few days ago we dropped by for coffee and cake. Again it was not busy and staff appeared strained and subdued. This new manager was on duty again. I would say he is not a people person - essential in a restaurant. When choosing our cake it was obvious one had sunk in the middle and another had a top layer 3 times the height of the bottom layer. We ordered anyway. My cake was sad, I could tell with first mouthful. Partners cake did not have flavour or decor to match its description and was sunk in the middle. We ate it because it’s always been really good but it wasn’t. When cut we could see it wasn’t up to its previous standard. As well as the previously noted faults, the filling was not spread to the edges and where mine was solid my partners was crumbly. What has happened? Have they changed the supplier and management? SO Disappointing! We looked forward to our visits so much. Please address these issues as soon as possible! It’s so disappointing. We went to the Bell on Sunday with our family for a Sunday roast. Warm and welcoming as it always was, new chef, so glad the pub is open again. Lovely big garden, great food and even better service.

My daughter and I found this cafe by accident. Here are our thoughts. 1. too small to allow dogs indoors. 2. could do with a bit of a refresh. The chair pads were stained and there were grease stains up the wall by our table. 3. toilet was very clean but on the first floor which meant climbing some very steep steps. Not disabled friendly. However my daughter who is vegetarian had a really good choice of foods and thoroughly enjoyed her meal. The young staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The coffee was delicious as was my hummus platter with Greek salad. The prices were good and I would highly recommend but I think it could be even better with a bit of a refurb. Didn't get to see the garden as it was too hot to sit outside but from the photos it looks really nice.

I cant get enough of there smoked shredded chicken
