The food on offer was great, but no choice of real ales unless you like flack manor which I hate it's disgusting so cannot recommend.

We went to the Hatchet to celebrate 2 family birthdays as it was relatively local to all of us, we booked with no expectations. What a cracking call. 2 of our group were vegans and I did notify the pub in advance, well what a spread the chef laid on, he went above and beyond to create and prepare a selection of well thought out and freshly cooked vegan meals. Us meat eaters also did very well, I opted for steak & kidney pudding and sticky toffee pud for dessert, wonderful. The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble allowing us to bring a cake and played happy birthday on the stereo and turned the lights down. I definitely will not leave it so long to go back, in fact I think I would crawl over hot coals for another go at that sticky toffee pudding! Thank you all so much for a lovely evening.

Always liked the real ale here but today only one bitter available plus a winter ale which was not to our choice. The food that we have liked in the past is not as good now, restricted choice, no baguettes, no omlettes, just more expensive choices. I realise prices have gone up I only have to look at my weekly grocery bill. But I do not agree with the price hike and the quality has gone way down, will think before visting again, so sad.

We have frequented the Hatchet for a long time and have always liked the good pub grub and the excellent real ales. Unfortunately today, though the beers were again excellent the food was not good. Cold jacket potatoes, cold burger, cold chips, a lot was not edable and was left. Lovely staff and refunded meals that were cold but we would rather have had a good experience and hot food. Please get back to where you where we used to love

This pub has been a regular but not frequent eating place for us. The last time we ate there was Sept 24th this year and it was as good as ever. Yesterday (11th November) four of us went for lunch. There was a reduced menu and prices were up. Given the difficult times for small businesses this change was not remarkable. Meals ordered were Beef and Ale pie, a Chilli, Fish and Chips and a Lasagna with Salad. I had the steak and ale pie with mash and vegetable. The pie was very good and I was satisfied. My wife had the lasagna and salad. The salad leaves were limp pieces of Rocket with raw onion and cucumber and was unappealing. The lasagna itself very small about 8cm by 6cm by 2 cm cut from, presumably a larger dish. When my wife tried the lasagna her reaction was there is no flavour in the mince it is just cooked mince in tomato sauce between 2 sheets of pasta. I tasted it and had to agree that it was not like any lasagna I had eaten The Chilli was not commented on but the nacho chips were burnt. The fish and chips had batter on the fish that was dark brown looking over cooked, while the inside of the batter was not cooked. The fish was moist and OK When my wife complained the reaction was very good and the server went to the kitchen and came back with the Chef's apologies and an offer of a glass of wine each and a reduction in the bill. An excellent response to such a disappointing lunch. I do hope they get their act together again soon.

Six of us had a lovely meal at the Hatchet on Saturday night, it was quite busy and they were really accomodating when our numbers changed. Loved the beer and the food. Service was great, and really good value. We will visit again.

We booked in with no prior information but found the pub a truly characterful pub with no pretentions of being posh. We had a warm welcome from cheerful staff and excellent service. The food was magnificent and actually too much to eat but we managed. Absolutely great value superb food and very comfortable. What a great find and we fully recommend it to all.

Very traditional, but everything a family-run country pub should be. The Hatchet is comfortable inside and out, welcoming, and pretty well organised for the days of Covid. For us, the real attraction is the food. Home cooking means home cooking. It’s good; not just the ‘old favourites’ that everywhere seems to serve right now. It’s also good value. Interesting offers on our recent visit included trout and spinach lasagne (delicious) and rhubarb and strawberry crunchy crumble (sadly, no room left to try it). My wife enjoyed the Cajun chicken (hotly spiced). Our main courses came with a choice of new potatoes or (wonderful) chips; and vegetables or salad (definitely not out of a bag). There’s a good selection of beer too. You may have a bit of a wait while your meal is prepared, but it will be worth it. Go relax. When I wrote this, the menu shown on their website was out of date. Visitors to the area should note that the address is misleading. The pub is several miles out of Romsey on the A27 towards Whiteparish.

Lovely to meet up with friends again and enjoy the atmosphere, friendly service and excellent food, not to mention the real ale which is always in top notch condition. Has to be the best pint around for miles.

Friday night pub dinner for 2. This pub was really busy so we were glad we booked in advance. Enjoyed the pie and the pork medallions in a Stilton and mushroom sauce. The landlady was super friendly and we have been back for a drink since. They also do takeout.

Thought on route we pop in for lunch.Outside very tatty with holes and gravel over the entrance and parking area.Inside, dangerous rickety tables and chairs.Decor very dated and grubby, hanging onto the past here.Food not so good either, needless to say not repeating this again.

This pub is always busy for food and I cannot fault neither the service nor the food. However, the web site advertises the large play area outside which is one of the reasons we went there with our toddler for lunch. The baby chair was a bit grubby but we wiped it down and had a lovely meal, but then we headed out to the play area. The photos on the web site are of when it was nice and shiny and new. Now the 'junior' area has a tatty wooden house with rotten floorboards and roof, and a toy sink full of putrid water, of which I was scared to let our children near it for falling through the floor and injuring themselves. The fence surrounding the area had blown over and there was a metal pipe end sticking up out of the ground ready to fall over. Nothing worse then trying to drag a child away form the a play area :-( Wont be returning anytime soon.

Having driven past this pub many times on our way from Romsey to Salisbury today we went in for lunch at about 13.15.Place was busy, atmosphere was good menu was quite extensive with the accent on home-made and local produce. We both had sausages with bubble and squeak followed by desert and coffee which were excellent. The beer on tap was St Austell and they also had Stowfords cider. The staff were very welcoming and there seemed to be a good few regulars in the pubWould thoroughly recommend this pub

My daughter and I found this cafe by accident. Here are our thoughts. 1. too small to allow dogs indoors. 2. could do with a bit of a refresh. The chair pads were stained and there were grease stains up the wall by our table. 3. toilet was very clean but on the first floor which meant climbing some very steep steps. Not disabled friendly. However my daughter who is vegetarian had a really good choice of foods and thoroughly enjoyed her meal. The young staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The coffee was delicious as was my hummus platter with Greek salad. The prices were good and I would highly recommend but I think it could be even better with a bit of a refurb. Didn't get to see the garden as it was too hot to sit outside but from the photos it looks really nice.

Portway Inn, was the best place for breakfats for my family and I. we use to go each week. Todday we were turned away and was told they no longer accept outside customers only residents only. I have taken a picture of each of these. There terms and conditions, there website, their menu and when you walk towards the reception entrance from car park, no where does it say residents only can get breakfast. what a waste of time and fuel. I am so disappointed.

Lovely pub, full of atmosphere and really old (grade 2 listed with parts from 16th century) we had perfectly cooked sirloin steaks. Ladies in heels beware, the paving between the car park and entrance has some missing pointing with deep gaps, enough to either wreck your shoes or test your ability to resist gravity if it's dark or you aren't watching where you walk. Lovely pub, masses of parking although no disabled parking bays to be found (although there may be one which is almost faded out so hard to be sure) which is a shame and they could certainly add a couple more as if you are disabled the walk across the car park would be too far for most.

Sadly this pub remains closed. Some work has been done on the building but there is no indication that it will reopen soon. Best to check before travelling. The nearest pub is the Black Horse at West Tytherley which has good reviews.
