I couldn't ask fir a more friendly welcoming comfortable clean place to stay. The food was well above average. Excellent quality and presentation.

Booked for one night so that we could drive down from Bedfordshire in the afternoon for a visit to the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu the following day. We arrived slightly later than planned (half an hour or so) but no bother. Our rooms were ready, clean and tidy, fresh and modern. We then went for a meal in the pub. A mainly Italian themed menu but some other dishes too. I opted for the Fish and Chips which was excellent. Lovely flaky fresh fish in a crispy beer-batter, chips were (I expect) triple-fried as they were particularly crunchy, just how I like them. Served with a pea and mint puree which was nice enough but (for me) there was a bit too much of that, but that is a very minor quibble. My son had a pork dish (Harissa pork?) which he enjoyed. Prices good on the rooms and food, and included breakfast which was the usual English breakfast fare of a full cooked breakfast and/or cereals, juices etc and coffee/tea. Service was always excellent and attentive. Yes, it is on a main road, but we knew that when we booked, and in fact it was like a selling point as we were amused with the way the front door rattled against the frame each time a big vehicle went past. Also we enjoyed spotting the various classic cars which went past occasionally, and a number of motorbikes. I expect this is due to it's proximity to the Motor Museum and the fact that there had been an event on there during the day. (For constructive criticism (if pushed to find anything to criticise) we found that just particularly in the main front bar area itself, it would benefit from a refurbish/redecoration, and the tables are a bit past their best, being a bit rickety/wobbly with slightly sticky surfaces, which I assume is a by-product of whichever cleaning product is used, as everything was clean and tidy. However, that being said, it really is the most minor of things which would be easily sorted.) Thank you for having us!

We’ve just returned from a 2 night stay at the Shoe Inn and we had a lovely time. Ideal location for a couple of nights in the new forest and good value too as the stay included breakfast. The landlady was very friendly and helpful as was the barman in the evening. We had our evening meals at the pub, they were very tasty from local produce and reasonably priced too. We had a back room and was not disturbed by the road at all.

My other half booked this as a weekend away with our little dog so we could go on walks into the close by New Forest. Nice little pub, friendly staff and locals. Landing to bedrooms nice once you get through the corridor connected to main pub and room has all you need although very small. The staff were very accommodating and made the first evening there pleasant. We had dinner in the pub, it’s a very Italian based menu and food was ok, nothing amazing though! I ordered a lasagne and although tasty it wasn’t really a lasagne in structure. A bit bizarre looking to be honest but as I said it was tasty enough, if a bit too heavy on garlic - we had olives and bread to start too and that was too heavy on garlic too - my other half had pork, which he wasn’t too impressed with. We enjoyed a nice evening in the pub on the Friday though. Spent a lot on drinks and food. Our dog was allowed in the pub and there were other dogs there, it’s a dog friendly pub but a little cold and dark, but had a little fire. We stayed in room 4, which overlooks the main road and it was very noisy! Be warned as other reviews say the pub is literally on the main road, with barely a pavement when you step outside the door it’s that close, (really do beware when stepping out) and it is a very busy road. We slept, I am sure the drinks we had in the evening helped 🤣 we were woken up a few times with lorries passing but we slept. The problem for me was it was very cosy and warm in the bedroom and I couldn’t open the window as that would have been way too loud to sleep, so had no air. The bathroom window could be opened but it’s on the stairs which could easily be reached if anyone wanted to break in. We paid £75 a night here, which for this area is reasonable but I think it is honestly over priced for a room at the front of the pub. I would expect a little bit more in terms of decor and cleanliness for that money to be honest…it is unusually noisy, maybe some new curtains and a new window should be invested in…(if you pulled the window towards you it sealed and cut out lots of noise but in its current state [lock and handle broken] it does let in more noise. Shower lovely though, nice and powerful. We walked for 3 hours the next day which was fabulous. Venture across the road and into the common and across to the new forest, was brilliant! We stopped at two other pubs on route - the Rockingham Arms and Red Rover and we decided to eat there instead of going back to the Shoe Inn for relatively expensive mediocre food. The Red Rover is only a chain and offers some regular pub food and good deals and they feed the dog with a full chicken dinner, which is a lovely touch. We walked back and slept much better on night two, I think Saturday night into Sunday morning is less busy that Friday night into Saturday, the fresh air and walk helped! On check out we noticed there was breakfast and found out we were entitled to it, but we weren’t told about breakfast times or anything at check in so missed out. Having that would have made a bit of difference to the value of the room. Special mention to Sarah though who was very accommodating and friendly. Plenty of parking. So a good pit stop for one night perhaps.

Booked 3 nights between xmas and new year. Everyone is very friendly, welcoming and service is excellent. Ate here all 3 nights, menu items and curry night food was fantastic. All well prepared and red hot. Curries were incredible. The breakfast is a real treat with good quality items , again very hot and excellent coffee. Rooms are compact and clean, fresh towels each day. We were on the front and road is noticeable but did not detract from our stay in any way as everything else was such a treat. Having visited a couple of other local pubs for drinks when we went on our trips, so glad we chose here. Even if not staying worth going to eat.

We stayed here recently, the staff are very friendly and couldn't do enough for you anytime. This Pub is a lovely local with really friendly people, lots of local people come here and are really friendly and the atmosphere is great. The breakfast is really good and of good quality which is really reasonable for the price your paying for bed and breakfast. We also had dinner here and the chef accommodated my request for slight changes in dishes. The food was of good quality and would definitely come here again for food. However, the room we stayed in was substandard with cleanliness. The floor had not be hovered in the bathroom or bedroom there was dust on the bed sheets, cobwebs on the celinings. The walls could do with a good wash down in both rooms. It was lucky I brought anti back floor wipes as the toilet seat was disgusting, it hadn't been cleaned around the hinges and the vanity sink/cupboard had a stain on it and hadn't been wiped down. All the holders in the bathroom are grubby, there was also some sort of hairs on the walls which I wouldn't want to know what type they are. The side table on one side of the bed you couldn't open the draw because it would hit the radiator so I couldn't use it and only one person could see the TV because of where it was situated. I feel the room needs a rethink and a good deep clean. I felt I couldn't say anything because the staff were so lovely and didn't have it in me to say anything, and I was only staying for a few days. The traffic is something that is unavoidable but didn't bother us much.

If you want an idea of what this pub is like, think of pitching up on the highway to hell. The road outside is horrendous, with thundering trucks and cars 24 hours. For an idea see the attached screenshot of an article in the Southern Gazette stating that the traffic even makes glasses inside the pub tremble and how it stops guests from sleeping. The garden was full of boxes, the back windows rotten and filthy, the front windows the same. The inside windowsills were dirty and full of dead flies. The curtains are drawn, so dark and dingy inside. Car park is acroos the mental road, full of litter and potholes. There was also a smell strong of weed in the pub. Absolutely awful and run by arrogant and rude staff. As an advertised Inn, this establishment is NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE. So disappointed.

We booked a table for 6 on a Friday evening. The pub was very quiet despite there being a folk festival nearby. Staff were very polite and attentive. Starters and main courses were ordered. We were very impressed with the quality and quantity of the starters. Unfortunately the main courses were ok but not to the same standard. The sirloin steak looked overcooked for medium. The steak pies and chicken pie looked good but was very bulky with pastry and not a great deal of meat/gravy although gravy was served separately. The worst was the roast potatoes which had been reheated to extreme and very dry. Our grandsons chose fish and chips, one normal and one child portion. The hand cut chips were extremely dry and mushy peas dried out. Hence the average rating so wouldn't revisit or really recommend this pub. Choice of ales was limited to a watery Ringwood, Romsey and one other.

We went here for a special Sunday lunch and were immediately confused as we had been told that there were no tables until 2pm, but when we arrived the restaurant was all but empty with at least 5 tables available.

We have passed this place so many times over the years and every time we always say we mean to stop in. Eventually we did and now we have we are gutted it took us so long. The service is second to none, quick, friendly & helpful. The food was awesome with a good selection of food. Already looking forward to our next visit. Just a shame it’s a bit out of the way but well worth the visit.

We stayed for one night here and we enjoyed very much. The rooms are clean, but a bit too small. However, compared to other inns in the UK, the room was satisfactory size-wise.

On a one night stay as birthday celebrations in a nearby Restaurant. Nice welcome and room ready , but hazardous walk to room due to low thresholds . Excellent towels ( always a good sign) but no full length mirror in room . Annoyed wife . However with front room very noisy throughout the night . Did read previous reviews and hoped it would not a problem .

Truly a must, do not drive past this is a great pub, plenty of parking opposite and disabled to the side of the pub. fantastic home cooked food. We had Sunday lunch, beautifully cooked vegetables tender beef. The puddings where fantastic. Our grandson who is only 15 months old was welcome and catered for with a paper plate for him to share our food and not feel left out. I would highly recommend

We had friends to collect from Southampton Cruise Terminal and didn’t fancy a 3 hour drive in the early hours so looked online for a B&B; close by.

The Shoe is situated right on the busy Salisbury road in Plaitford, with heavy goods vehicles thundering by making access awkward, fortunately there are pedestrian lights close by, as the main car park is across the road.

Booked here to break up a journey before sailing. Room 5 was small and looked over the busy road. All the usual amenities, kettle still had water in it from the previous occupants but otherwise ok. The bed was comfy and we slept ok. The en suite was disappointing. This due to the amount of mold in the shower area, so much so that neither the wife or I had a shower. We both thought a problem easy to rectify but had been missed for unknown reasons. The bar was well stocked and the outside area is ok. Having been travelling since 9.30 am we arrived just after 4 pm. We were told that it was fish Friday and that the only table available was at 8pm. As a resident there, we thought there would have been some lee way to fit us in earlier, particularly as we had spoken on the phone the day previous and no mention of booking was made. Not knowing the area we decided to stay and to be honest the fish Friday meal was ok. Breakfast was also disappointing. Scrambled egg was dry and placed on toast without the choice of butter, small portion as if one egg had been used. Fried eggs were overdone in oil and dominating the taste. I've got to say having stayed in countless b+bs it was the first cooked breakfast I have left. Overall we were disappointed. The price was ok and it is convenient for the ports. Some tweaking and the stay could have been so much better.

We have just returned from a stay in the hotel for three nights. Very friendly staff, helpful for advice on visitng local attractions. Breakfast was amazing. Rooms are small but adequate for a short stay. Very clean, extra toiletries was a bonus plus the complimentry shortbread. Bed very comfortable, power shower was just what you need first thing in the morning. Chris and Nat

We booked in here for 2 night stay, attending a local wedding. Warm welcome from staff, reserved table for dinner and shown to room. First impressions the place looks tired and needs bringing back to life! Our room was clean and comfortable although at the front of the building which (as stated) can be noisey from A36 road.

I found the pub on the internet looking at the web site this place looks very impressive as it is under new owner ship . First impressions when we arrived all looks very nice. then we come to the dinners that we ordered hard roast potatoes fish over cook and dry and some off the vegetables cold . for different dishes ordered and only one was up to scratch . we also found the management a little off as if they had got out of the wrong side of the bed. we will not be attending this place again

Excellent choice on the lunch time set menu which was very good value. Very tasty food and large portions but the food did take ages to be served probably because we were a large group. Friendly staff and would visit again.

I have had a brilliant 4 night stay at The Shoe Inn. Sarah, Gary and team were welcoming from arrival and nothing was too much trouble. The breakfasts were delicious and locally sourced. It would've been nice to have had a fruit selection with the cereals. The Inn was clean and decent WiFi included. The room served its purpose, powerful shower and cleaned daily. Yes, there is road noise but this is advertised. The fan helped and you get used to it. Would recommend the ciders and choice of evening meals.

Ok this is the worst place we’ve EVER stayed. It was a last minute booking that we regret! Room was grim. It was dusty, tiny, only one working window. The bed was massively uncomfortable. Soft and lumpy which meant I didn’t sleep. Only had one window that opened directly on the main road. So 24 hour traffic, which is expected. Window didn’t close properly. The bathroom . The shower tray was dirty with hairs in and also a scum line around the base. The shower head and taps were covered in limescale and grubby. Under the sink was also grim. Dust everywhere and ground in all around the bathroom window.

A warm welcome and was impressed with the food. However the room was too small our dog had nowhere to sleep. It was so hot we had a fan that helped but the dog panted all night. Too noisy with the window open as on a main road. Hardly slept and was woken early hours by passing lorries as they shook the building. Shame as you can see the owners are trying hard. Bathroom was tired and could do with updating. Adequate for the low price

Just enjoyed an excellent lunch with a friend at The Shoe Inn - it's a while since I was last there. Lovely, tasty, home-cooked meals - I had pan-fried chicken breast with new potatoes and roasted peppers. My firend had fish and chips (haddock with real chips and homemade tartar sauce). Reasonable selection of real ales. Nice, freindly atmosphere and prompt service. Well worth a visit...

We had a lovely stay in the pub last night, food was excellent, we both had the seared chicken breast, the potatoes and vegetables were outstanding! The desserts are to die for and the gin selection is on point! The bed was super comfortable and a lovely clean tidy room with tea and coffee making facilities! Even provided us with a fan as it was so hot, I slept soundly! A little on the noisy side as it’s on a main road but it didn’t bother us at all, friendly staff and an all round lovely evening! Thank you so much x

Portway Inn, was the best place for breakfats for my family and I. we use to go each week. Todday we were turned away and was told they no longer accept outside customers only residents only. I have taken a picture of each of these. There terms and conditions, there website, their menu and when you walk towards the reception entrance from car park, no where does it say residents only can get breakfast. what a waste of time and fuel. I am so disappointed.

My daughter and I found this cafe by accident. Here are our thoughts. 1. too small to allow dogs indoors. 2. could do with a bit of a refresh. The chair pads were stained and there were grease stains up the wall by our table. 3. toilet was very clean but on the first floor which meant climbing some very steep steps. Not disabled friendly. However my daughter who is vegetarian had a really good choice of foods and thoroughly enjoyed her meal. The young staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The coffee was delicious as was my hummus platter with Greek salad. The prices were good and I would highly recommend but I think it could be even better with a bit of a refurb. Didn't get to see the garden as it was too hot to sit outside but from the photos it looks really nice.

The food on offer was great, but no choice of real ales unless you like flack manor which I hate it's disgusting so cannot recommend.

Sadly this pub remains closed. Some work has been done on the building but there is no indication that it will reopen soon. Best to check before travelling. The nearest pub is the Black Horse at West Tytherley which has good reviews.
