When we first visited this restaurant last year, we were really impressed. The food was excellent, the staff were warm and welcoming, and we were so pleased we recommended it to friends and family. Since then, we’ve returned several times, hoping to relive that first great experience. Unfortunately, with each visit, both the food and the service have steadily declined. On our most recent trip, many of the menu items were unavailable. The staff explained there had been a missed delivery and that the restaurant was very busy, though it didn’t do much to help the situation. Our waitress seemed rather disinterested, and didn’t offer much sympathy when explaining the missing menu options. It was clear her heart wasn’t really in it. We also waited around thirty minutes just for our drinks, and when the food did arrive, the rice served with the curry was overcooked and stodgy — not exactly what we had been looking forward to. It was a disappointing visit, and sadly, we won’t be returning.

A friendly welcome on arrival by The Receptionist, shown to the bar for table which was lovely. Lewis, the barman couldn't have been more attentive. Staff like him are what hospitality should be about. He talked me through the Ales (Brewed by the company), told me about that evening menu choices of the day and couldn't have done more. He really is a credit to the place. The Bedford is a fabulously situated hotel/bar/restaurant in Tavistock. Somewhere to treat yourself to food and drinks for sure. Thankyou to all of the staff. I will definately be back and also go to your sister establishment too "The Two Bridges".

Looking at these reviews, I must’ve gone in on a really bad day! I was literally there is the door opened at noon and the first customer in the door. It took around 10 minutes to get my portion of chips so I assume they were freshly cooked. I considered that the prices were extremely expensive so I was expecting half decent at least but I can honestly say, despite the lovely cheerfulness of the owner, these were the worst chips I’ve ever had in my life from a takeaway I might as well have pulled out a packet of walkers crisps onto my plate. They were all refried crispy nothings. There was a little that resemble potato anywhere. I also ordered a pickled onion, which I didn’t actually get, the curry sauce was bland, the sausages were liked by the dogs and extremely overpriced for the size. In fact, the only good thing about this meal was the mushy peas. As I say, maybe I caught them on a bad day, but I would certainly never be returning

Absolutely love this place! The food is consistently delicious, beautifully presented, and made with care—whether you're popping in for breakfast, lunch, or a cheeky treat. Their coffee is top-tier. Smooth, rich, and expertly brewed every time. What really sets this café apart is the service—genuinely warm, friendly, and attentive without being overbearing. You can tell the staff care about creating a welcoming atmosphere, and they always go the extra mile to make your visit enjoyable. The place itself is spotless, with a family vibe that makes it perfect for catching up with friends or getting some work done. It's clear they take pride in every detail, from the cleanliness to the ambiance. Highly recommend—easily one of the best local spots around!

We came for Saturday lunch after a beautiful walk to Wistman's Woods. Staff were very friendly and efficient and even though it was busy and we hadn't reserved we received a table in the restaurant. The menu was varied and the food was wonderful. This accompanied by their locally brewed Ale made our lunch memorable. We came back in the afternoon after another long walk and enjoyed their lovely scones and tea and took a souvenir pack of their Ales On Sunday we returned and even though their Sunday roasts were fully booked we managed to get a seat and enjoyed the light lunch menu, consisting of homemade sausage roll, quiche and a very delicious soup. Compliments to the chef!

My wife and I were in Okehampton for a couple of days and fancied a big breakfast before starting off for hone. We found the cafe on google maps and gave it a try. The breakfast was very good and there was lots of choice. The cafe is quite small with 5 tables for 4 and 1 for 2 people. It’s laid out in the style of an American diner. It looks like it’s run by two ladies, one in the kitchen and one serving, so when it’s busy things can take a bit longer, but it’s worth the wait. The waitress was very helpful and accommodating moving us to another table when the sun was shining in our eyes. The cafe was very clean and fresh with the tables and chairs disinfected after each customer. I would recommend giving the cafe a try.

I don't know where I should start. First of all, you can literally smell their pasties from the other side of Tavistock, and when you get there, they won't disappoint. Got 2 medium trad pasties for my friend & I for lunch, and the lady at the counter discounted it by like 60p each using the Warren's app or something like that. She also gave us a lot of vouchers (not that we were gonna use them) so we gave them away. Should've eaten it in Tavistock, because when I reached the service station, it was a bit cold. Just going to say this: As a tourist, maybe I don't know what a proper Cornish pasty tastes like, but Warren's fulfills my definition of proper (the ones up in London are worse and twice as expensive).

Terrible Homemade Steak and Kidney pie. Flat dish a few bits of meat floating in lots of gravy with a separate piece of flacy pastry balanced on top tried to cut into pastry and gravy poured out all round the the edges. Grey peas. Chips okay. It is the worst Steak and Kidney pie I have ever had. I used to stop here regularly travelling between Dorset and Devon. Used to be very good food. Will not stop here again.

Where exactly is Waitrose going now? Their vegan stock used to be supurb then gradually they replaced the good stuff with obscure trendy stuff that never seemed to move off the shelf, now the vegan section is a tiny little section at the end of a shelf with nothing that I find suitable to buy. I used to spend aboit £150 a week in this shop, now im lucky if I spend £50. I have started to go to Sainsbury in Marsh Barton on the way home from work. They have a huge range, so Waitrose, you have driven me away, I hope others follow suit. 😒

We had not been to the Mary Tavy Inn for several years as our previous visits had been less than memorable. However on hearing a number of positive stories about the pub we decided to take some friends there for lunch. I have to say that it was a total success. The owners have clearly invested a great deal of money into the dining room which now looks the part and is very welcoming. There is little background noise, so conversations are easy to have without resorting to shouting. The menu is varied, interesting and reasonably priced; the atmosphere is relaxed and calm and the service was first class. The Mary Tavy Inn is now our go to pub when in the Tavistock area. Well done to the owners and thank you.
