We came for Saturday lunch after a beautiful walk to Wistman's Woods. Staff were very friendly and efficient and even though it was busy and we hadn't reserved we received a table in the restaurant. The menu was varied and the food was wonderful. This accompanied by their locally brewed Ale made our lunch memorable. We came back in the afternoon after another long walk and enjoyed their lovely scones and tea and took a souvenir pack of their Ales On Sunday we returned and even though their Sunday roasts were fully booked we managed to get a seat and enjoyed the light lunch menu, consisting of homemade sausage roll, quiche and a very delicious soup. Compliments to the chef!

Dinner menu limited. Last bastion of Nouvelle Cuisine. Cooked breakfast of excellent quality but stingy - never been served with half a piece of black pudding, hogs pudding the size of a thumbnail, one egg, one rasher of bacon, one mushroom and a chipolata before. Bring sandwiches.

My daughter and I had a cream tea here (it was the only thing they were serving at lunchtime). This was very good with a large, slightly salty scone, plenty of Devon clotted cream and jam. Since this replaced our lunch we also had an extra cake, mine was a home made flapjack which was truly amazing, had raisins in and was completely drenched in honey - truly indulgent! Service was also very good and a pleasant outdoor eating area.

Popped into the Tors restaurant after a drive through Dartmoor for an afternoon tea. Upon arrival, we noticed that the majority of people were all of a much higher class, and we felt looked down upon. We were greeted and sent to a table outside, not even offered a seat inside, despite there being plenty of seating available. Whilst waiting for our order, we were given the food of another table, and the man sitting across from us had not had his order taken after almost 30 minutes of waiting. When delivered, the food was okay, however not a place I would recommend to family and friends. Was overpriced for what we received. Was a good stop for a toilet break after being in the car for so long, however would absolutely not return, due to this disappointing visit.

After buying drinks, the place was invaded by two separate groups of fox hunters fnar-fnaring, farting, and flirting with each others spouses, after having chased Dartmoor's most terrified wild mammals for their own entertainment. Apart from that, the place smells of boiled cabbage and there was wee on all of the toilet seats. I'm not certain if this is a consequence of certain customers spending too long in the saddle, or if it was a tip left from similarly repulsed customers. Avoid. Drive on to the next town. Enforce the hunting ban.

Went here a few days ago with my girlfriend for supper . Its surroundings are beautiful being on the moors, but was incredibly easy to find . Full of character! Had a pre supper drink sitting on lovey old leather sofas in the lounge . Not a huge menu , but all tastes covered . A delicious amuse bouche, a small cup of exceptionally concentrated tomato soups was given to us to start ... yum is the only word ! Excellent bread on the table too . We both had different starters each delicious and interesting use of flavours. My girlfriend had lamb perfectly cooked , I had belly pork , faultless ! Delicious selection of vegetables too . Service was perfect, plenty of staff but not intrusive. Good wine list , again small but all areas covered , and very reasonable. To finish I had a very chocolaty pudding , quite rich ! My partner had a rhubarb and custard pudding, well I detest rhubarb, but it was delicious!!

Popped in to the Two Bridges with our cousins from Australia following a delightful walk on Dartmoor. On entering and being told to order our food at the bar, we grabbed a table in the window overlooking the gardens, river etc. Sadly, the table was grubby and dirty. Staff behind the bar frosty and unwelcoming. Food disappointing - ordered 3 BLT's with triple fried chips for 4 and 1 bowl of soup. Got served 2 BLT's which were soggy, told the waitress there was 1 missing. Staff behind the bar insisted only 2 ordered despite 2 other people confirming 3 were ordered. Never Mind, we paid for another and the 3rd one arrived and we started to tuck in. It soon became apparent that the chips which were served in small mesh fryers were not all they appeared to be. Three quarters of each container had what I call the spoils or remains of the last fry. They were all tiny pieces of hard and burnt potatoes with some plump fries just on the top. Very deceiving and not what we expected. (My cousin even said that she was looking forward to eating some nice plump chips - what happened?) She filmed this meal to show family and friends back home - not a good advertisement for this hotel and we will not be back. Will find another, hopefully better venue when next lot of relatives arrive in 3 weeks time.

As Sunday was expected to be a warm sunny day, a walk on Dartmoor seemed like a good plan, ideally preceded by a nice meal. I had previously tried to eat at the two bridges hotel, so we booked there. I had only seen the pub side previously, so didn't realise I had booked for the slightly fancier restaurant, but I decided it would be an unplanned treat. Things started well with bread and water being brought to the table when the first 4 of the party of 9 arrived. Unfortunately that was the end of the good service. At no point through the whole meal did they ask if we wanted drinks. At several times I tried to attract the attention of the waiters to order something, and either there none around or they seemingly completely ignored me or failed to see me. More than once I actually had to get up and call them. It was a fixed price Sunday lunch menu, which was fine though it would be nice to have been warned on the phone. The menu only mentioned the price for 3 courses, so we assumed we had to have 3 courses. We later discovered you could have 1 or 2 courses, but this was not mentioned by our waiter or on the menu. When our order was eventually taken, the starter came out reasonably promptly, and was delicious and beautifully presented, so the kitchen staff clearly know what they're doing! The butternut veloute, goats cheese and beetroot, smoked salmon and chicken liver parfait were were all positively received. They did not all come out at once, could not remember who had ordered what, and asked if everyone was happy when three people clearly had no food in front of them! After startes, there was a long delay before plates were cleared, during which I attempted to order some drinks, none of which had been offered until now. When the mains came eventually (we were starting to be concerned about our walk at this point), it was also delicious, both the roast pork and beef were delicious and generously portioned. After the mains, feeling quite full we inquired and finally discovered we didn't have to have three courses, so only some of us (who would probably not have had starters if we were properly informed) had desert and some had some coffee instead. So what could have been an excellent meal was spoiled by appalling service. You expect more when paying £19 for 2 courses, or £25 for 3.

I first dined at 2B in 2006 and found it was just as enchanting at table as it was from the road. Since then I have brought all my closest and dearest there for a visit and have never been disappointed. I cannot understand how other local establishments which advertise 'fine dining' can sleep at night compared to the Bridges. Standards are exceptional on the culinary front, service is impeccable but friendly, and the ambience just my cup of tea. But best of all, it hasn't mattered when we visited over the last decade of continued excellence- almost mission impossible across the shifting sands of hospitality. Last night proved it again, a quiet night managed seamlessly by service and production staff. Special thanks to Karl, Kate, Levi, and Chris for another superb dining experience, never forgotten, and already looking forward to the next time.

We noticed this hotel/ restaurant on the way back to our B&B and wanted to make reservations for the same evening. My partner and I walked to the reception and asked a very friendly waiter for a table for 3 at 7.30pm. Another lady from the reception then looked up, apologised and mentioned without even checking her system that they could not accommodate us this evening so we left. However I did not quite believe the receptionist and called the hotel an hour later reserving a table without a problem. All evening during our stay the restaurant stayed half empty so not quite sure what the issue was on our first attempt to book. To be fair when we initially walked in, we just finished a 4 hour walk through the fields and maybe our appearance put the lady off. Nevertheless we had a great meal; everything was cooked to perfection and the service was so attentive, friendly and professional. In fact our meal was so delicious that we booked a table for the next day on the way out. Overall we spend over £330 over two days; money the hotel almost missed out on.... Don't judge the book by its cover, right?

My wife and I were making a leisurely drive through the Moor back to Plymouth and decided to stop for lunch. The beer was local (the excellent Jail Ale) and the food was excellent. It was a bit pricy at £29 for two (one beer and a diet coke; a sub chips and a sausage and mash) but the food was delicious: triple fried chips with Aioli sauce, local sausages with cabbage and onion gravy and a really tasty Mozzarella and Pesto Sub. A good place to stop before Princetown in a beautiful setting, sat out in the front in the Sun. An earlier review complained bitterly about a member of staff and mentioned her name. Based purely on a midweek lunch it was fine. We chose to eat in the bar area rather than the restaurant, (off the same menu) as the restaurant was a little....dated. (Red fabric on banqueting chairs anyone?) Likewise the function area which was in the process of being turned around for the next week. (Although it was tuesday. Was the easel with the table plan set up from last weekend and not removed or was it in place for next weekend?) This is obviously set up as a wedding venue, and I am sure caters very well for them, but the bar area was much more welcoming. The food was of a reasonable, if not good price. Ham egg and chips featured pulled ham in a tower with a poached egg on top slavered in a mustard hollandaise. Which for £12 ain't bad. But they are a little lost on service. Probably because we were in the bar area, three times the wrong food came to our table, and our food went to the wrong table twice before being delivered to us. It was an unseasonably warm day in february so I guess the staff were a little overwhelmed. It was a nice trip out and perfectly convivial though. I did hear Guinness being asked for twice; a bottle of Porter is not quite the same, but my Jail Ale was a welcoming distraction. I probably wouldn't go back in summer and at the height of the wedding season though.

We have visited the hotel several times and always enjoyed it. It has got the good Old England type of atmosphere, luxurious and comfortable furnishing. You can choose to sit outside or inside with plenty of space not feeling crowded. It's located in the lovely countryside of Dartmoor, surrounded by green hills and with a view of small river, just a short walk from the enchanted Wistman's Woods. They do absolutely lovely cream tea! And we also enjoyed a long slow delicious dinner, when we were made to feel welcomed and cherisher as a customer by friendly and attentive staff. The food was high quality and absolutelly delicious. Like all our fellow dinners we received an extra free dish of cream of truffle that evening as a compliment from the chef. I was particularly impressed as besides the normal menu (i.e. meat dishes) they also had good selection of vegetarian and vegan menu. I'm not a vegan myself but the vegan menu looked so enticing that I ordered it and loved it! This has been one of the best dinner experiences we've had recently. The services are stellar. However beware - this place is very popular and reservation for lunch or dinner is recommended. They also do wedding and other parties, as well as mystery murder weekends, especially in the high season so it's advisable to book. There is plenty of space to park at the car park outside. As a curiosity - there is a flock of geese that belongs to this place and you can watch them parading pass to the river and meadow at the front of the building or snoozing along the walls outside in the evening.

Unplanned day out from Cornwall and ended up at this little gem on Dartmoor. Mum & I out walking and exploring with our dogs and decided to head to the Two Bridges. We were made to feel very welcome with our two Rough Collies and were given the chance to choose a table to suit us. We picked a comfortable table with comfy sofas and plenty of space for our dogs so they wouldn't disturb anyone. Great menu using local produce and ingredients. Lovely atmosphere with like minded people with family, friends, dogs, groups of hikers etc. We chose the Dartmoor beef and Jail Ale suet pudding with smooth mash, tasty seasonal veg and a delicious sauce. Finished by sharing a freshly made scone with cream and jam. Great wine and cappuccino. The staff were lovely and quietly got on with the job making us feel very relaxed. The other diners and visitors all looked very happy and there was a wonderful understated atmosphere. There were board games and books available for general use and, although not required today, several open fires with gleaming copper canopies which must be very cosy on a cold day on the beautiful and rugged moors. The manager who has recently joined them was delightful. Next time will arrange at least an overnight stay. Fabulous location by the Dart river with walks on the doorstep. Thank you all.

My son and daughter-in-law brought me here for a cream tea on Mothers Day and the service, atmosphere and food were so exceptional that I booked, there and then, for a meal for 21 family and friends to celebrate my husband's 60th birthday. The attention to detail shown by every member of staff I spoke to was exceptional. Nothing was too much trouble, even when I altered the menu offered, added extra guests and then altered the menu choices again. I was treated like a valued friend and appreciated it so much. When we arrived, we were able to go in the lounge for drinks, before being shown to our massive table, superbly presented, in the Georgian Room. Music was provided by a man playing a Grand Piano - all adding to the wonderful ambience of the evening. As for the food, it was sheer perfection. We were invited to go through to the Music Room for tea or coffee and when we arrived there, the sofas and chairs had been rearranged to give our party an area to ourselves, which was just marvellous. Truly - this was one of the best evenings we've ever had and cannot recommend everything about the Two Bridges more highly. If you haven't been already, do go - you'll love it as much as we all did.

on the recommendation of a friend I made a detour here for lunch en route home from Cornwall. My mate is right, the place is utterly charming, great staff, nicely appointed and a very good menu. I was too late for the restaurant but I fund a comfortable armchair in the lounge and ordered a pot of tea and the open British beef sandwich. The sandwich looked and tasted fantastic but sadly the wooden chopping board on which it was served was a bit too skimpy to give me room to cut it. As requested the waitress had it transferred to a plate, but alas rather than a dinner plate it was again too small to make it workable. I opted not to return it for a third attempt but inevitably bits of the lovely salad and gourmet crisp garnish ended up on the floor. Such a shame when presentation outshines the ability to eat a dish. Otherwise thumbs up for this popular landmark country hotel on the edge of Dartmoor.

My girlfriend and I walked into this pub after hearing about it from friends in Plymouth. After a 40 minute drive we arrived and thought we would pop in for a drink. Before we even got to the bar we got approached by an elderly gentleman who told us we were not able to stay as walkers and hunters would be coming into the bar shortly! So there were many unreserved seats at the time of about 3pm on boxing day. However, we were not welcome to stay or even stand at the bar for a drink. I am 34 and my partner a similar age and neither of us have been treated with such disrespect in our lives this far. This in my opinion is appaling behaviour and made us feel embarrased and outraged that we could be treated in such a way. We will obviously be telling other people about our story and advising others who are not locals that they will not be welcome. This behaviour fortunately does not seem to happen in London and we are grateful people are more open and accepting of people who are not from the local area. This is my first review and I signed up to trip advisor especially to make the effort to let people know my feelings on this matter.

Had lunch today in the restaurant. Service very slow, portions were minute and the food was average. Very disappointing. Had been there six months earlier for a cream tea which was excellent and could not believe it today as there were only 11 guests including ourselves, for lunch? We had to order our drinks at the bar, carry them through to the restaurant ourselves yet were able to order a second glass (eventually) at the table - then had to pay 2 separate bills for food and drink as they were not able to combine the two together. We have visited many eating places whilst here for lunch and came away full to bursting, but not here! Also, minor point, the set up for lunch was very uninviting.

As the name suggests, this is right beside the lovely Two Bridges. A beautiful old world hotel where we stopped for afternoon tea. There is ample parking and easy access into the hotel, immediately inside orders are placed at the bar and then delivered to your table, you are given a wooden spoon with a number to identify your order correctly. We sat outside and enjoyed a view of the one of the bridges, resident ducks slowly walk past, not bothering to speed up for arriving cars, this is clearly their right of way! The tea was excellent and reasonably priced, the staff attentive and friendly too. Restrooms are on the ground floor and very clean. A lovely place to stop in Dartmoor.

Well it was all a disaster from the beginning, but staff did do all they could to put things right. First of all people jumped on the reserved table that was reserved for us, so we had to wait around for a table. The meal was only warm, but my mate got is warmed up. Coffee order got delayed. But we did have some money off and staff really made a effort to put things right. We will go back again, because the last visit was excellent.

We had lunch there on Father's Day (Sunday 15 June 2014). It was meant to be a special family occasion but it was not good. The staff are fine but the food was really poor. The Prawn cocktail starter was quite good but then everything went downhill. The main course roast lamb was terrible - very little meat and a disgusting amount of fat - inedible. The roast beef was also terrible - not sure at all if it came off a carved joint - you know when something has been carved, chunky and uneven and just lovely - this was 'clinical' and unappetising and tasted like something you would expect in a poor pub. The veg too were utterly boring except the cauliflower cheese; The puddings also disappointing. So, very sorry Two Bridges, we won't be visiting you again unless you bring back the carvery and the previous chef, or get the plated food right. You can buy wonderful meat from butchers in Tavistock, Launceston and Okehampton. But you will still need a good chef to do it justice.Incidentally, how strange that so many negative reviews are of Sunday lunch experiences. Is that the head chef's day off?

My girlfriend and I decided to eat here on the final night of a long weekend away to Devon following a family party. Upon our arrival we were met with a smile on arrival, as our table wasn't ready just yet we took a seat in the charmingly rustic reception, warmed ourselves by the raging fire and were brought a delicious Kir Royal cocktail. Though the A'La Carte menu looked incredible, we opted for the tasting menu and accompanying wine courses. What followed was seven of the finest dishes I have ever tasted, immaculately prepared, presented and proportioned. Hand on heart the finest food I've ever eaten, my girlfriend would concur with this statement too. Our waiting staff were diligent, informative and charming with no air of obsequiousness or pretence. They were highly informed and ready to answer any questions about how the food was prepared, or from where the ingredients had been sourced. Moreover; they offered up this information freely with every course that came. The sommelier was equally attentive and informative, asking if we had preferences for certain courses and offering interesting alternatives. All in all, a superb meal, beautifully executed - both in the kitchen and out. Hats off.

This was our first and last visit to this restaurant for which we had high expectations. The setting and the service from the staff could not be faulted. However the lunch was disappointing in the fact that the pork served up was mainly fat and the food was only lukewarm that we had to request it be sent back. When our replacement meal was served it was only slightly hotter. The pork was replaced and was a great improvement, the comment made was the last one was obviously the end of the batch! Clearly no pride in what was being served. We were assured that our replacement meal had come straight out of the oven! I would suggest they turn the dial up and take more interest in what leaves the kitchen.J Hoyle Paignton

Arrived and car park packed, so we thought this is going to be busy, but we were the first into the restaurant, apart from this women with marbles in her mouth. We ordered and the chap never came back, then a French girl took our order and got our drinks that got forgotten. Meal was great. Then we retired to a more comfy setting and ordered a coffee, the coffee came and went, the chap who bought the coffee cleared other cups and took our coffee away again. Then he brought our bill and I asked where is our coffee, he had to go and get it again. All in all we really enjoyed the meal but the staff need to get a better memory. We will go back but any forgetfulness we will never go back again. You nearly got 5 stars.

My husband and I stayed and ate here for our anniversary. The starters promised much and the Brixham crab ravioli was delicious if minuscule. The main course was a different story. The risotto was under cooked and gritty. This was sent back to the kitchen with the promise that chef would take care of my main course himself. The second plateful was completely inedible as it was laced with a tablespoon of salt. I felt it must have been retribution for sending the first effort back. The kitchen then informed us that the risotto was not seasoned and it was the natural flavour of the Parmesan and butter. THIS WAS NOT TRUE. I rarely complain about food and in this instance my complaint brought no satisfaction, instead the meal was spoilt by a huge amount of salt. Terrible.

We stopped here on Good Friday for lunch. It took over 5 minutes for a member of staff to find us a menu. The queue to order drinks and food was 10 deep, which with only 1 person serving for the majority of the time took another 20 minutes. This wasn't helped by only having 1 till to use. The food then took another 40 minutes to arrive including the Cream Teas, surely they could have brought the teas out quicker? The open sandwiches were very nice but not very big for £6-95. The cream teas were good but at £8-25 for one person weren't brilliant value even though there was enough tea for 2 people & 2 large scones. Shame they wouldn't give us another cup despite us asking for one. The soup was nice and came with 2 cheese scones which was surprisingly generous for them at £5-50. The worst thing was being ripped off for £3-75 for a small (and I mean really small, see my photo!) ramekin sized portion of 'triple fried chips'. They were homemade and half of us liked them (the other half hated them, saying they tasted greasy) but can only have been a single large potato's worth. We complained and they immediately apologised (as if they have to on a regular basis) offering to bring another couple of portions out for us free of charge. Surprisingly they then only brought one more out. I get the impression that they feel we should be lucky to visit them and want to take advantage of their remote & beautiful location to extract maximum profit out of tourists with no concern about return visitors. It's a real shame and we won't be returning despite some positives to counter the negatives.

We were halfway across Dartmoor and decided to stop for a light lunch. When we realised how busy it was in the car park we entered the hotel in trepidation as we thought we would be queuing. Wrong! we were served straight away in front of a fireplace with glowing log embers. We had ordered one soup and roll a sandwich and coffee. The food arrived on wooden platters, the open sandwich being spread along in front of one with salad and crisps etc, and the soup with two warm home baked and flavoured rolls and a chunk of butter. Excellent and we thought at much less cost than they could have justified in such a location.

We ate here on 4th August and I certainly could not recommend it particularly if you are a vegetarian! Our first course of pepper and tomato soup was at best mediocre and had a overpowering flavour of a condensed canned variety. However this disappointing beginning did nothing to prepare us for the 'main course' which consisted of a piece of 'frittata' cut out from a larger one with a circular cutter the size of a scone! This was garnished by a single pea shoot and a few other withered leaves and was supposed to constitute a main course.Comical didn't even begin to describe it.The waiter did bring us 2 more minuscule Frittata 'cuttings' when we complained but then must have run out as the third circle was in fact an even smaller triangle! The staff here were very professional and it is a shame that they are let down by whoever is in control of the cooking and portions. The canapés we were served with sparkling wine were very good too -shame about the rest of the meal.

They told me they had it and offered to send it to me that afternoon. It had not arrived by the Saturday 5 days later so I phoned again and was told it was still in the till. We went to Sunday lunch for the first time in November and was pleasantly surprised by the interesting and superbly cooked food! It's not the cheapest place around, but we were very impressed with the standard of the food and the service was very friendly. Starters were quite small but very well thought out and came with bread rolls if you needed filling up. Main courses were delicious - extremely well cooked fresh hake with a variety of interesting seasonal vegetables, one of the best fish dishes I've had in years. Also a mushroom risotto of excellent flavour and quality, and when we asked if there were vegetables with it we were offered an enormous plate of vegetables from the carvery for free. Desserts again very well flavoured, tasty but not overly rich. Two of us with good appetites were full by the end.The reason I didn't give 5 stars is because service was pretty slow - we were there for 2 hours having a 3 course meal - but given that, on the day, they hadn't had running water all morning and until well after we arrived I felt that was forgivable and that they handled it pretty well.

We have been to the two bridges on a number of occasions before and always had a good meal. With family staying we decided to go for Sunday lunch as a treat. Our meal was booked for 1.15 . Our order had been taken before we sat down at 2.00 pm but we did not get our starter until about 2.30. One of the party did not get her starter as it had been given to another table so had to make do with something they had left over. There was no bread for the (tasty but tepid) soup - when we asked for bread for the soup and were told it was still being cooked in the oven, so were given white sliced. When the baked rolls eventually arrived we had all eaten our starters. The rolls did help fill the gap waiting for the main course to arrive. We had to chase staff all the time to find out what was happening through out this disappointing experience. By the time we had had our deserts we had been there over 3 hours. We learnt a private function was taking place in the normal restaurant area and they were clearly over stretching themselves. We will not be going here again.

This seemingly charming pub in the middle of the moors is in fact an overpriced tourist trap. With no other eateries for miles, visitors to the area are drawn to The Two Bridges with signs declaring such as 'fantastic lunches'. What a joke. My husband and I were starving after a long and misty drive. We chose an open sandwich each, and at approximately £9 per sandwich, one would hope you would get a bit of bang for your buck. What arrived (half an hour later) was not just disappointing, but inedible and bordering on disgusting. The tiny morsel of bread that was supposed to be the open sandwich was soggy and bitter, thanks to a bit of burning. Five chips accompanied this soggy bit of bread, and the topping to my sarnie was stingy to say the least. As for my husband's steak sandwich, the meat was tough, mostly gristle, and virtually inedible. After hunting for a member of staff for 15 mins, (no exaggeration - if we had walked out without paying no one would have noticed) we were given a half-hearted apology and one of the sandwiches taken off the bill. Avoid this place.
