The Prince of Wales in West Devon

Went here for lunch on my birthday with my family. The food was absolutely amazing, one of the best pies I have ever had, steak and ale, it was absolutely rammed with steak. My kids had a chicken burger and steak burger with bacon, both said they were best they had in a long time. Wife had the mushroom starter, which she said was delicious but she was pretty livid she didn’t have a main after seeing ours. Will def now be a regular of ours. Beautiful walks on the doorstep of the pub as well. Great place 😊

Christmas Eve lunch booked for family (13) with seven pre selecting from the Christmas menu whilst the rest ordered on the day from the standard menu. Waited around 30 minutes for the order to be taken which was expected mentioning that 7 people had already selected from the Christmas menu. Starters arrived around 30 minutes later which were later cleared after some prompting. Mains started to arrive 20 minutes later in dribs and drabs, with food going cold waiting for other dishes to be served. 3 of us sat around awaiting the Christmas beef dish which just never appeared. Not once did the waitresses ask if everything was ok or if anything else was needed. On going to the bar and asking about the 3 missing meals the waitress then went to find out what was happening. She came back with a slip of paper stating that there was no beef written down and walked away. On asking could we see owner about the issue and were we getting anything she stated that the owner was out having a cigarette and would be looking through his emails. This despite being shown the email sent and confirmation received for the booking and menu choices. No word of apology or suggestion of any meal being served from anyone. Eventually the owner came across and said he had missed the beef off his written note and would provide 3 main courses for free. As we were now over 90 minutes into the meal and everyone else having finished the main course we asked if there was beef and he suggested the turkey dinner would be the quickest. Over 20 minutes later the turkey dinners turned up, looking like they had been shared and sorted from other dinner plates being prepared as they lacked the pig in blanket and parsnips that came with one of the original turkey dinners. Still no apology from anyone and the waitresses had gone into hiding. The whole experience was shocking and whilst there was the excuse of it being Christmas Eve, there was no excuse for the poor standards of service and the lack of apology. There have been mixed reviews on here about this place which may be down to the amount of time that the owner and staff spend at the wrong side of the bar. Staff training in customer service is non existent and the hand dryers are still not working in the Gents. Fortunately, we do not live anywhere near and will definitely not be returning here on our next visit to Devon.

A gem of a pub. Staff so friendly and beer is excellent!

Having eaten at this pub for years today was the last time. The food was awful, so salty I could not eat it. Yes I was asked " how was your food " I said very very salty. He cleared the table and walked off not a word of response.... went to the toilet washed my hands and noticed a very old sign on the hand dryer.. Out of order.. I looked around for a hand towel dispenser NOTHING !!! I WALKED OUT AND ASKED FOR A HAND TOWEL, out from the bar comes a roll of blue paper towel. How much do you need ?? Enough to dry my hands.. Peels off a load of paper , I dry my hands standing asking for the bin... The pub was very empty due to the high winds however the food took over 45 minutes to be delivered. As I pointed out at the start we have been using this pub for more than 30 years eating wonderful food every Sunday. I found the meat in my steak and ale pie to be top quality totally ruined by over salting and for getting how salty the addition of STILTON CHEESE WOULD MAKE THE PIE UN EATABLE.. I DONT KNOW IF ITS UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT, AGAIN !!! My dog ate the meat pie and as my light hearted complaint was ignored, we will not be going back.. Very sad indeed. I will not be recommending this pub ever again. 44 pounds pluss for a very poor quality meal. Listen to complaints even when wrapped and delivered softly . If it was addressed we may have said we will see you tomorrow for lunch, your loss and your prices are getting ridiculously high 18 pounds for a basic curry on a plate.. We will not be back your loss of more than 130 pounds for four meals over two days.. and people ask why ary these long standing pubs closing down. YOU ARE IGNORING YOUR CUSTOMERS......

What a lovely pub! Super warm and cosy atmosphere, lovely staff, and really accommodating towards dogs. Food was as expected, not bad but equally nothing special. But it was tasty, and we both left feeling full from the decent portion sizes.

Lovely pub great food and selection of ales. Staff are very friendly and great customer service. Didn't stay overnight so can't rate the rooms but we will be back and stay over night.

Originally supposed to be a quick pit stop before we continued our journey but ended up staying an hour and ordering food and drinks. Food was delicious - highly recommend the blue cheese burger with chips as well as the grilled bacon, Brie and cranberry sandwich. The vibe is lovely and they provide 0.0% Alcohol/beer

This place has seriously gone down, how so very quickly? So much arrogance and the service is poor. There was a hunt meet, where a fight broke out. Why allow such people in? Its was a drunken mayhem, so we left.

Visited on a Thursday lunchtime and the pub was busy. Very friendly and welcoming staff, and a beautiful pint of Jail Ale. Had the Wexford Steak from the specials board which was Fantastic . Lovely Stilton sauce, and perfectly cooked. Thoroughly recommend this pub, and judging by the number of patrons, many others appreciate it too.

5 Starts it’s not enough, brilliant food and staff, there is no visit to Dartmoor without visiting this place, strongly recommend

good took over an hour to arrive, macaroni cheese was greasy, and rice was missing from vegan jambalaya. was not impressed, staff did not care that meals took way longer than anticipated, and that food was incorrect. will not be going back.

Formerly, my go to pub in Princetown, however, after my visit today, I'll eat at home or to one of the other businesses in the town. I arrived at ten to two and was served lunch at quarter past three. Asked politely, twice whether we'd been forgotten, no one took responsibility for the fiasco, eventually the food arrived, two of the meals were fine but the roast beef was probably the scraps, pulled beef, soggy yorkshire pud. Appears no adults about to take responsibility, no apologies , such a shame, the beer's so good, if you can get served.

Online food serving hours are incorrect. Cute place tho Edit: the hours I was told are Sunday to Thursday dinner until 8 and Friday to Saturday dinner until 9. They will also stop earlier if it's not busy

Went here for Sunday Lunch after not being there for several years. The pub has had new owners since we were last there and have made the place brighter. Staff were very welcoming, friendly, attentive. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Service was efficient, although we had to wait a bit longer for our meal to arrive compared to other places. The wait was more than worth it. The roast was exceptional - the best we have had in a long time. The food tasted divine and was well presented. Portions were more than generous. There were plenty of meal options - excellent choices for everyone. Will definately be going back. Thank you to the Chef and all of the staff for a wonderful lunch and a lovely experience.

Returned after period of time away, had the steak pie & chips, pie looked little odd but tasted excellent. Returned for an unplanned roast on the Sunday. Had the HUGE mixed roast (came with extra veg on side) - so much took home for lunch next day.

Well presented country pub, didn't eat but menu looked good. Local Dartmoor beers on tap, nice pint.

We stayed overnight in Room 1. It's an amazing room. Very well done with everything you could need. We ate and drank downstairs food and drink, service was great. Breakfast the next morning great choices and good quality. Recommended.

Amazing place! Amazing staff! Amazing food! Been a few times now for drinks, lunch and dinner. All times have been great! Friendly staff, great vibe, if it's chilled or busy it's just a great place to be. I'd say the best place in princetown for sure. Highly recommend 😬

Food is over priced. Staff vapeing while walking in and out of hotel. Only a few other tables there but still took 40 mins to receive our meals. Definitely wouldn’t go back. Food average.

We had a delicious meal here, pie and mash they were so tasty. They had some great ales and ciders on tap and the staff were wonderful and friendly. There’s a reason this place is so busy! Don’t miss

I had lunch here after trekking on the moors. I had the steak and ale pie which was nice and the brownie dessert which was more of a millionaire shortbread. The staff were nice although one of them spent a lot of time on his phone whilst walking through the pub and also vaping going in and out of the kitchen.

Servers were on their phone and vaping indoors in sight of customers. The food was good but when I was served a Mousse instead of a Sundae they just told me it was a sundae and left. The pub was also cold and the drinks also tasted weaker than usual.

We had a very delicious lunch there after our excursion. My burger was great. The salad with goat cheese too. We would eat there again.

Very welcoming. A locals' pub and great base to explore Dartmoor from, especially on foot. A great menu using local meats and vegetables, with tables outside too for those sunny Dartmoor days! Selling fantastic local ales such as Jail Ale and Ice Warrior from the legendary Dartmoor brewery, just a stones throw away. Don't miss it! Yay!!!

Totally ignored by barman while he carried on his conversation. Really disappointing as I go here quite regularly training on and around Dartmoor. Expect better service next time...

Faultless !!!!! Outstanding food & service & excellent big portions . If you are like us & live quite far away then you will appreciate the lovely drive seeing the moors, once you reach the pub & soak up that wonderful atmosphere the pub gives & taste the food then you will be sure to visit again. The prices are very reasonable & there was a very good choice of food & specials. When we are next down then we will visit again.

Dartmoor National Park is 954km2 of beautiful landscape, within it and beyond this is one of the most outstanding pubs.

Nice pub, we ate there. Apart from the tomato cream as a starter which was great, we were rather disappointed with our dishes which were hearty but had little interest from a taste point of view.

We had Sunday Lunch at the Prince of Wales today, and it certainly lived up to all the brilliant reviews. Clean tables, great atmosphere, plentiful food, and brilliant service! We both had the roast option, and were delighted with our choices. Lovely seasonal vegetables in a separate dish, and all the usual trimmings. We certainly didn't need a pudding afterwards! Looking forward to going back to try the pies, and the Specials menu. The serving staff were friendly, patient and courteous, and we couldn't fault our visit. Thank you very much.

I wouldn't even give 1 star. We had a terrible experience here. After spending well over £150 on food and drinks, we found our meals had multiple hairs on the plate and lipstick marks on supposedly clean glasses in which we were just served a drink in, disgusting! Our waiter acknowledged the issue and agreed it was disgusting. The manager/chef/landlord - whoever the waiter spoke to was completely unbothered and unhelpful and did nothing to rectify the situation, so clearly this is a recurring matter and something they think is acceptable! There is a basic choice of food to have and the roast was diabolical, roast potatoes looked like they were boiled and not roasted, the meat was slopped on the plate and the gammon ham on the ham egg and chips looked grey and was stringy like it had been sat in their kitchen for a week, eggs slimy and undercooked, the list could go on. Their indifference to such a serious issue was shocking and they are quite clearly not capable of understanding basic food hygiene regulations. We will not be coming back and will be spreading the word of this terrible experience at this poorly run and managed pub. SIDE NOTE: We also had to pay full price for our meals even with hair in them, which is a major issue, you do not expect to order food and have hair in it, but here this is normal!!

Beautiful large pub in rural princetown. Has a beer garden with sheltered area. Good selection of ale and beer, and good choice for food. A bit pricey, but the portions are big and you're supporting a local pub so worth it!

Three of us stayed in the Prince of Wales overnight 9/10 July and were treated royally. On entering, soaking wet having crossed Dartmoor, we were met by John (owner/manager) who booked us in, took us to our room, and made sure all our needs were met. The accommodation was first class, clean, newly renovated, well-provisioned, with very comfortable beds. We later had a superb dinner and in the morning delicious full English breakfasts. The bar staff were excellent, helpful and clearly well-trained. In summary, an outstanding pub / hotel.

We were staying in Princetown for the weekend and chose to have a meal here on both Friday and Saturday afternoon. Fantastic service on both days from the wonderful staff, lovely setting and the meals were amazing. We both had the pies one day which were exceptional. Full of meat and the pastry was perfect. Next day we had the pulled pork burger, which was wonderful and also the pizza, which came with a massive portion of chips and salad. I could only eat half of the pizza which was great as given a box to take the other half back to our accommodation for laters, which was absolutely perfect (plus daughter had the remaining for her breakfast the next day, so a totally well used meal!). Thank you, keep up the good work!

Friendly welcoming pub with good food. We visited for dinner several times on a recent stay in Princetown. The chicken skewers were superb!!

This is the place to go, food was fabulous, pub itself is very warming. I read other reviews about the staff, but you have to remeber you are in Devon, the pace of life is much slower, but I found all the staff very welcoming and pleasant. Bar staff could not praise the two Brazilian chefs enough, and they were right, excellant. I found the beer clean and at a perfect temperature. The specials board was a perfect reflection of the food, a clean welcoming pub, I want to go back and will most definately bring our friends, even though we are over a 100 miles away!

Best latte I've tasted and the baguette with bacon brie and cranberry was superb. Would highly recommend a visit. Staff very friendly and accommodating.

Thought we would go to eat here as staying just 100 yards up the road!! Went inside and no one behind the bar or anywhere to be seen!! Waited 10 mins when a local kindly said he would go and find them!! Barman came and we asked if doing food he said yes just find a table!! Sat down, another staff member then appeared and said something to him, he came over and said “oh somethings gone off I don’t think we are serving food now I will check! Came back with a no! No apologies or explanation!! Would I return here ….. definitely not!! There are better places in the area!!

We weren't impressed with the food,the curry was very bland....I asked for some mango chutney to liven it up a bit but alas they didn't have any.Dissapointed.

One of the best pub meals we have ever had!

Stayed in bunkhouse for daughter’s hen weekend, brilliant from start to finish, bunk house was warm and clean with great bunks, living area and kitchen fab. Pub great staff and atmosphere and tasty pub food with good choice and generous portions. Definitely recommend when in the area, or make a special visit!!

Homely feel on inside, with modern well kept bench seating at rear outside - parasols optional - dog friendly in garden - no cats friendly staff with a selection of snacks available through the day- car parking at rear. Wheelchair accessible. Only called in for recessing shandy to sit out in the sun outside. Did not stay or eat there as on passing coach trip tour.

Had beef and ale pie and it was very dry and the meat was so tough

stopped here for a break from my exped and was absolutely delighted with the service from kate. she gave us a walm welcome and showed us a table to lug our massive bags before ordering. gave us all wonderful recommendations on their specials menu and really quick service. absolutely incredible service would recommend this place to everyone and anyone. thank you Kate!!!! Fantastic meal last weekend. Perfect after a decent days walk on the moors. Great, friendly service, great selection of food and drink. Just what we needed

Food was loved by all my friends on the table . But my burger I’m afraid was over cooked and didn’t seem to be homemade which was disappointing as this made it dry. The onion rings were overcooked and nearly burnt too. Was going to have dessert but wasn’t sure if kitchen was still open as wasn’t asked if we wanted any. We don’t usually have negative this things to say about this place.

Lovely pub, well-used by the locals and the 'birthplace' of Jail Ale which is brewed in the village. Good food available and also has a bunkhouse for walkers.

Had the best Sunday roast it was huge and perfectly cooked a choice 5 veg. The staff were great and friendly and will definitely be going back, well done 👍

Had a long walk around Dartmeet and then to this pub at 3pm on Easter Sunday. First time for us. Delicious hot food - pork belly roast, hunters chicken and classic burgers. Jail ale and Legend under £5 pint. Great serving staff.

It was a good place for me to visit the atmosphere was good lovely old pub/restaurant with old beams and original walls I recommend that you go there. They do food aswell and reasonable price.

Had a Saturday lunch, and the meal was very satisfactory. Service with a smile, have been here before with no complaints and will return.

Great place to have a drink or a meal, plenty of parking spaces, friendly staff, toilets clean, disabled friendly. This pub caters for everyone when you consider where it is situated right in the heart of Princetown on Dartmoor. So when you visit this pub expect to see Dog walkers and there dogs, Cyclists, Hikers and walkers. It's a great atmosphere.

Recommend the home made beef lasagne.

me and my family went there Friday 26th January. food was all wrong, was 9 orders wrong! and one was completely missed off! ordered sausage and mash asked for it with beans and they bring it with peas so i sent it back and asked for beans they took it back and put it in the microwave with the beans! it came back with peas stuck in the mash! and the food was piping hot! i burnt my mouth to the point i can’t eat and it’s blistered!! will not be coming back and i DO NOT recommend to anyone!!

Not sure if management has changed but little to like about the food. Cannot accommodate mash for chips…lasagne is pretty much inedible…very sad given the desire to support local business. The staff try their hardest…online booking does not work….make sure you call them if you want to stay or eat…would recommend looking for other options….don’t come here looking for good food

Great location for the end of a circular Dartmoor walk. We probably hit this place for Sunday lunch on the wrong day, it was Rememberance Sunday. They were clearly understaffed, and the staff that were there were trying their best, but very stressed and this 'short' with customers. The backroom was cold, the food was also cold! Perhaps it is better on a quieter day.

Had lunch here after a good walk on the Moor. What can I say, welcoming and friendly staff, top beer, top pies & top steak! The best pies we've had in a long time (especially when topped with stilton👍) and the steak we ordered was cooked to perfection. Highly recommended, we will be returning!

This is a hidden gem on the moors. Great welcome and service by the staff. Food was excellent, freshly cooked and hot food. I would highly recommend it, will eat there again. The Halloween decorations were excellent.

Good selection of beers and other drinks. Meals are very good and huge, had a burger one evening and the Sunday lunch which could have fed two people it was that big. Bar staff were great with some fun banter going around and a good atmosphere.

New owners. Been given a lovely clean face lift. The food is now amazing. Highly recommend this lovely friendly pub.

Visiting the village of my childhood the pub has great atmosphere and history. The menu however seemed quite expensive.

We were a group of four who had reserved a table on a Sunday. Parking nearby but payment required. Access to the pub was easy and it was rammed. Lovely choice of very local beers. The problem was the food, or more precisely, perhaps our food choice. Our group of four composed two meat eaters and two veggies. I chose the Hunters Chicken with cheese and a specially made blue cheese sauce.( I am allergic to onion). This was fine. My fellow meat eater chose the beef roast which looked as if it had been sitting on the pass for too long. The veggies chose crostini and a wild mushroom risotto. The crostini was served as slices of French bread with a tomato paste squirted across the top and the risotto was a grey soggy mould-shaped lump of rice tasting of starch . Both the veggie choices were returned and not billed. The roast was half eaten. To be fair, it was an extremely busy lunch session. To maintain standards, and the chef's reputation, the food menu should have been shortened to a choice of roasts only ( and do the job properly) and/or a very limited " other" choices. Staff were very good considering the working pressure. The pub had a cosy atmosphere but it will not be a first choice venue for me if food is part of the equation. I am an ex Restaurant Hotel Inspector.

Meine Lasagne war herausragend,, der Chicken - Mushroom - Pie meiner Frau so lala. Da sind wohl die Pilze ausgegangen. Es war ein bisschen kühl im Gastraum. Personal sehr freundlich. Das Prince of Wales ist der Geburtsort der Dartmoor - Brauerei. Insgesamt würde ich eigentlich 3,5 Sterne geben, da das nicht geht halt aufgerundet 4 Sterne.

Stopped here for a cold drink while on a hot mountain bike ride over the moors. A lovely little place & will be sure to stop here again...
