Very delicious chips and sausages haven’t tried the dish but I’m sure it is as good !!!

Service and staff were excellent but chips were pale soggy , fish was supposed to have been Cod but it was almost flat ! Batter was terrible would not recommend.

I can only assume the vinegar is watered down. He put loads on the chips, as requested, but you couldn’t taste it and the chips were very dry and slightly al dente for me. The fish was so thin, if it was cod then they’re getting three or four portions out of a fillet. The batter was nice and crispy though. Pity about the rest. I couldn’t eat mine, I took them home to finish off in the microwave and put some vinegar on.

Tried this place twice now. Under the old management it was awful. Ken has turned it into a fish and chips delight. Fish perfectly cooked, no soggy batter. Chips lovely. Portions are more than generous. It's not often that you get perfect fish and chips but this is as near as you will get. Highly recommend.

Good freshly cooked fish and chips. Nicely packaged. Friendly service. We ate our food in the nearby small park adjacent to the river which was very pleasant. Note that the photos showing an outside eating area are nothing to do with the fish and chip shop. They are of the next door pub.

Best Fish & Chips we've had since moving down to Devon! Picked up Takeaway on our way back from Plymouth and food was excellent. All freshly cooked, batter on the cod was the best we've ever had. We will be making the journey back to pick up from there instead of the offerings around Tavistock from now on. Definitely recommend!

The famous chippie is a little fish and chip shop tucked away in the village in horrabridge lovely tasty food and the owner couldn't do enough to accommodate me even down to triple wrapping my fish and chip supper so it would still be Lovely and hot when I arrived home in Plymouth and it was well done the famous chippie

Use to visit this Chippy on a regular basis when it was owned by the original family & tried it out again with new owners but not a good experience as they used different oil which was not pleasant. However, revisited tonight & beautiful fresh/flaky fish & crispy batter! Totally different taste than before. A small comment would be to brown chips more, although cooked, very pale & soft. Overall a good meal!

Lovely thick and flaky fish beautifully cooked. The chips were soggy and not very nice. The man behind the counter was very pleasant and friendly.

Batter could be improved - not very crispy and undercooked. Fish was chunky and tasty. Chips hot and cooked fresh. Scampi- tasty, good size and number of pieces.

The best fish and chips we have had in a while! Chips and onion rings were crispy. Fish bites were huge, fresh and batter was very crispy. Chicken burger was also delicious, pattie was real chicken fillet with crispy coating. The only thing I would change would be a little bit more mayo on the chicken burger but otherwise everything was perfect. Will definitely be back 👍🏼

Came down to Dartmoor on a family holiday and researched the best fish and chips in the area. Found the ‘famous chippie’. Superb food! It was super busy on a Friday night, always a good sign, even had some French customers, a glowing recommendation indeed!! So glad I chose this place, I was not disappointed, the fish was light and fluffy and the chips were perfect.

Amazing customer service, the guy who owns the place is so very polite and gave us a lot of time, asking for questions about our holiday here. On top of that the service was fast and the food tasted scrumptious.

Try this place if ever you are on Dartmoor. Its a guilty pleasure for me on my way home. Grew up on fish n chips on a Friday night back in the Midlands. Its not cheap though. If its a busy one you can wait outside and they will give you a little wave.

Sehr leckerer Fish & Chips Store. Hier wird alles sehr frisch und direkt vor den Augen zubereitet. Auch, wenn die Fotos bei Google es suggerieren: es ist ein reines Take Away Geschäft. Es gibt jedoch nebenan im Park zahlreiche Picknicktische. Kleine Holzgäbelchen kann man kostenfrei mitnehmen. Die Portionen sind alle sehr groß! Ggf. also eine Portion zum teilen bestellen.

We got fish and chips last night. Fish was cooked very nicely but chips were awful not crisp but soggy went in the bin. The mushy peas were the smallest portion I have ever seen in a tiny plastic ‘tub’ .At £20 for two portions it was expensive. The old police station at Princetown is far better and much cheaper.

Been here a few times now for fish and chips. Always cooked fresh to order never greasy. Chips are a good size portion. Fish always nice and big.

Poor chips. The fish was cooked in oil that was not hot enough. The batter was smooth and impregnated with oil. When cut the oil oozed out of the fish. It cost us £13 . Very poor. Never again. Please learn the correct way to cook your products. Perhaps we should have known when there was no other customers in the shop.

We had three portions of fish and chips at lunchtime today. Freshly cooked to order, massive portions and really tasty. Nice clean shop and a very friendly chap cooking our lunch. Recommended.

Me and my wife had large cod and chips here tonight and it was delicious. Not greasy at all and cooked to perfection. Portions were huge, loads of chips and massive pieces of cod. Very good value for money. Will definitely be visiting here again.

First visit since moving to the area. Having been recommended to try the fish 'n chips here, the opportunity arose earlier. We drove by around 16:45 and my wife went in, ordered some cod' n chips, sausage too. It was cooked from fresh whilst my wife waited. The quality was excellent. Fantastic chips, none of the infused together rubbish, so prevalent in sun standard shops. The cod was superb, crispy batter, with beautifully cooked, fresh, flakey white cod. My wife was equally happy with her sausage. A top drawer first sample of this fine shop and no doubt we'll go back soon.

Delicious and after I left my battered sausage on the counter (happens to us all!) the owner tracked me down to give it back, amazing service!!

Massive portions of fish and chips. Excellent quality food. Will call again when passing. Cooked to order. So hot we were at Tavistock before we could eat them.

Good food for the price. Not too greasy as you can find with other places. Shame they had to cook the batter with the chips meaning I had to have an alternative due to my intolerance. Very quiet when I visited and Service was relatively quick. They're clearly doing something right as they had a wall lined with different awards. If you're in the area this certainly won't be a bad choice.

Me and my husband have take away from here at least once a week as the food is always cooked fresh to order and the fish is lovely...only complaint (if I have to give criticism ).. the portions are huge!!! And my waist line can prove it 🤣. Thankyou to all who work so hard and stay so friendly 😊

The title is a bold claim, but it's really true. A family member recommended The Chippie and we called in by off-chance. The fish is meltingly lovely, with dry, crisp batter and truly fab chips. The takeaway and fry station were spotlessly clean and the person who served me was charming. I wish we lived closer by to eat their fish and chips more regularly

I went to Chippie at Horrabridge to get our tea and I'm glad I did because they were the Best Fish and Chips we have had in a long time, the Chip Shops in Tavistock haven't got a Clue, I will never go back to the Chip Shops in Tavistock, if anyone wants GOOD FISH AND CHIPS go to the Chippie in Horrabridge

We were on our way from dousland to tavistock to get fish n chips for tea ,on the spur of the moment we thought we would try the chippy in horrabridge,we used to go here alot ,but stopped going as it had new owners,how great our visit was,the server was very friendly and made us welcome,the food was lovely really big portions and great value in fact we are going again this Saturday.

It's a real shame to see so many negative reviews. It seems when it comes to fish and chips, Brits get a little high-and-mighty about it. Honestly, this is some of the best fish and chips we've had for a long time. Pretty perfect batter, crispy and nicely browned. Great chips. None of it too greasy. Do people not realise how damaging these unnecessarily condemning reviews can be to an independent business? Think about it. I guess this is what TripAdvisor has become now. Carry on doing what you're doing Famous Chippie! We'll be using you frequently from now on.

Oh dear. What has happened! This place used to be fantastic for fish and chips but today! Yuck. Fish tasted off and the batter was like the frozen fish you buy from the supermarket. Please, Mr Chippie, if you read this, go back to how it used to be.

We use to visit here but haven't in a long time, it is close to a 20 mile trip so thought we would get some fresh air and some nice fish and chips. You once had to wait on the pavement because it was so busy but I when we arrived the shop was empty. Was I just lucky? NO, very unlucky! I paid £19.20 for two small chips, two medium fish, two pots of gravy and two cans of Tango. We drove a few minutes down the road and sat in a car park. Some of the chips were uncooked but something I have never had before was bubbles on the outside of the batter, I did not realize that it was because the batter was raw. I was left with an almost mouldy taste in my mouth which would be from the flour I guess. YUK! I love fish and chips, and when it is done well you cannot forget how good it has been. This I will always remember, the taste of mould, raw batter. That is the last visit for us. You would be better off with fish fingers and oven chips. I have to work for 2 hours plus to pay for that. I do not use this site anymore but just had to warn other people, so I came home and felt obliged to write something.

The worst fish & chips we’ve ever eaten. The batter was raw on the inside and running out, the chips were barely cooked either, we spent £25 And it went in the bin. It would’ve been fine if it was all cooked longer as the portion sizes were generous. I would’ve taken it back if I had the time. my parter said when he was waiting the man serving was very rude to another customer, too.

After not visiting Horrabridge chippie for quite some time my husband & I decided to treat ourselves. My husband is a huge fish & chip fan and even he couldn't eat his meal. £16 for 2x cod & chips & 3/4 went in the bin! Chips were either hard & tasteless or tasted of dirty oil & the fish was completely tasteless with undercooked batter in some parts! Will not be revisiting

Thought I would try the chippie again as the last time I ate from there was not impressed , hoped it would of improved with the recent change from frozen chips to fresh .Chips were not much better this time around, too many smaller pieces that were rock hard and the fish was dry and the batter seemed to be unevenly cooked , almost as if it was cooked from frozen or had been had been kept heated for a long time , very dissapointing , unlikely to bother again .

We ordered 2 large poached haddock and a large portion of chips cost an enormous £24.50!!!! The haddock was far from large and really I am not sure it was a normal size. I had been told they were making fresh chips but unfortunately clearly not tonight. Unfortunately we won’t be visiting again.

Just short of £20 for an order of 2 large cod and medium chips.Cod was more batter than fish. Fish was edible after overcooked batter chiselled off and discarded. This used to be a good chippie with large tasty portions now below average. In future if I want fish and chips will be going to the local pubs in Horrabridge or Dousland where you will pay the same money for a well cooked plate of cod n chips.

While staying in Horrabridge on holiday, we opted for fish & chips one evening. Chips were hot and defnately not soggy, Fish was very tasty with a lovely batter. Would definatley go back if we are in the area again.

Catastrophic decline since change of owners. Fish is tasteless, is it Cod? Batter thicker than fish and uncooked. Chips very dry and odd, very expensive with it. Will not be back.

Gone down hill since the last owners had it, chips were horrible and dry also the fish I had was undercooked my kids had there kids meals but also complained at the chips and cod bites ending up with cooking at home got introduced to the new owner who was rude to his staff while the seating area was full waiting for there food, the two ladies at the front was very pleasant and helpful and apologetic for the wait but very disappointed with the food will not be going back

Not sure where to start. I cook better chips at home. They are clearly frozen, how you can charge those prices for frozen food is beyond me. felt sorry for the girls behind the counter. The owner had no idea what he was doing and treated them like something he walked in. I wouldn't be surprised if he stays open long with the food like that and his staff values!! no wonder it's a ghost town when I drive past.

Chip's were terrible - I am really quite shocked, so so dry and like a previous reviewer said are these frozen chips??? - would not recommend.

How can you get CHIPS wrong??! These - very uniform - chips were so dry I asked my husband (who collected them) if the chip shop actually had a deep fat fryer! Dry and tasteless, and looked just like the frozen chips I have in my freezer. The fish was less than 1cm thick (yes, I measured it), and was glistening with fat that 4 kitchen towels did nothing to deplete. We had a large cod & chips, and a medium cod & chips. At £20 next time we’ll go to the pub next door! Award winning my eye!!

Myself and my partner moved to the village last year and have been to the chippie on probably more occasions than we should admit to! The food is not only delicious and freshly cooked but the staff are so welcoming and always up for a bit of banter.

An award winning chippie in the heart of a beautiful village. Great variety of different dishes so not just the standard fayre. Great on a Summers evening to get some fish and chips and sit by the river watching the world go by. Great service and great food. Always worth a visit.

Chips - perfection. Sausage (in batter, my choice for dinner that night) was very nice. Service fast, friendly, and professional.

The chip shop is spotlessly clean , they have won many awards in their industry but unfortunately, customer service is the worst I experienced in my week visit to England .

Had some F&C; from them and I believe that they were just about the best we have ever had. My wife usually suffers quite badly with greasy food but not with these. Not only were they not greasy but were fresh and yummy. Definitely worth a visit and a detour to them.

Cod and Chips - Getting very choosy these days when I buy but fish and chips, in fact went off them all together for a while, too many with soggy, greasy batter and limp chips. not here though nice batter, not greasy, lovely white fish and great chips. restored my faith in a fish and chip supper. Great fish & chips prepared fresh to order, so, expect a few minutes wait at busy times. Have visited before and standard remains consistent. A choice of other cooked food available if fish, or, chips are not your thing.

Have never tasted such revolting chips from a Fish & Chip shop, they were obviously left overs from lunchtime. No way could we eat more than a couple each, they were dry and powdery. Pricey too! Yuck!!

I think the chips are fried in Rape Seed Oil, and they taste dry and fluffy. Personally I prefer a bit of oil and the well fried bits. The fish was not that huge despite ordering a large one and it was expensive. Its a top awarded chippie and it is all well presented, but its not my favourite.

We turned up on a Monday to find that it was closed, but came back the next day and we weren't disappointed. It's not greasy and good tasting chips with a nice chunk of cod with no bones. My other half had scampi and that was spot on too.

We occasionally visit this fish and chip shop even though it is about 10 miles from home. The food is always good, everything is cooked fresh and the staff are always friendly. This must be one of the best fish and chip shops outside of Plymouth that I know of. It is always busy, I have never seen this place empty. The only complaint is you have to wait a little while for your food but that isn't a bad thing. There is a review saying “Very nice but very pricey”. It isn't that bad I would say it is on a par with others, it is good so worth every penny. The menu is huge so there is plenty of choice. They sell the largest piece of fish I think I have seen.

I'm not surprised one had to pay top dollar for the food here, and to be honest I don't mind paying it because it's been given plenty of awards which always boosts the price and it's absolutely scrumptious! But for the price I did expect alot more on the portion size. A large chips is more like a medium or even small in other fish and chip shops! They definitely need to increase their portion sizes! Apart from that it was lovely.

It's our local chip shop and great if we need a lazy tea! Chips are nice and there is a good variety of food on the menu although not everything is currently available and it also depends what night you go. I like how they often add nee things and that there are a few vegetarian options to choose from. Staff always friendly and welcoming, and you can pay by card if you need to but for a small charge on top. If you're planning to drive there be warned that parking outside can be tricky - there's parking round the back of the pub next door which you can use if necessary as on street parking is limited and the road is busy.

It does what it says on the tin. Quite expensive but the quality of fish was good. Thick white cod. Fish was freshly fried as I waited. Good efficient team working there.Would return.

The chippie at Horrabridge is the best by far in the area, including Tavistock and Plymouth. You'll often find something a little different from the usual cod and chips here, all freshly cooked as you order. Being an experienced chippie visitor, I have yet to find one as good as this. I have known friends travel quite some distance just to be able to sample the great food here. Check for opening times if you're travelling, and bear in mind that it is take away only. However, during the summer months, friends and I have often eaten our chips sitting on the swings or by the river in the park right next door!

Nice food hence awards but always travel to Tavistock for fish and chips. Also you can get a takeaway in the village pub that is cheaper and bigger in oration size

We love to pop in when we can't decide what to cook, such a selection to choose from, chips are a big portion even for the hungry ones :-)

Visiting Horrabridge area and popped into the pub to be instructed by the brother-in-law to "pop next door and order dinner". 3 large cod between 5 of us and that was plenty! Beautiful, crisp batter and the fish was extremely tasty. I'd forgotten how good the fish can be in West Devon and this was a happy reminder of how good it can be when you get to go to a really good chippy! I must visit more often...

I have now lived in the West Country for 35 years and travelled the length and breadth of it and have tasted none better...and there hygiene policy is top notch and they are such lovely friendly people.

A little dissapointed after seeing all the "awards" and reviews. The chips are from frozen, the fish a little small to justify the price tag and the batter was rather soggy. Certainly edible but expensive for what you get. I think they need a trip up north to Whitby and see propper fish and chips at a good price.

Walked into This Chippie for the first time last week to be greeted like we were 'regulars' ..so welcoming and friendly. The food was excellent and I can't say I agree with 'pricey'...you get what you pay for'.... if you want Mcdonalds............... Will definitely be using in future for good food and good service with a smile.

While I respect what is obviously a decent and useful business I can't help expressing my experience and impression. The food here is comparatively expensive and not that out of the ordinary. The staff particularly an older gentleman seem to have a very high opinion of themselves and the chip shop. Every sign and display is a statement of betterness and superiority. I did not feel relaxed or particularly welcome. Almost as if they were doing me a favour. Chip shops have gone through tidal fortunes since the 60s and. Any have gone or been replaced by a miryad of alternative fast food options. The good chippies that remain have kept the best of what went before and the service tends to be relaxed and friendly just as the prices (except in tourist traps) tend to compete. The shop in Horrabridge could do with some objective outside comment and learn a lesson or two. I see that I am not the first to have felt this way.
