Unfortunately this restaurant did not live up to expectation. It was very local to us but unfortunate ly we were not tempted to return there. The establishment has now closed and become a private residence.

We we re heading for Cornwall and googled 'pub on Devon/Cornwall border. What an extremely pleasant surprise. Slightly out of the way, but worth the search. This pub has won wine pub of the year several times and although the outside is slightly disheveled, the food is generally excellent and not too expensive either. There is a superb choice, even on a weekday lunchtime, although my vegetarian wife thought the tomato soup was average. I had Sea Trout and thought the flavours were superb. It left me wanting more.Difficult to find in Trip Advisor because it is listed without the initial 'The'

The Harris Arms is great and I can't believe it isn't swamped each lunch time/ evening. The landlord and lady are very welcoming, as are the young serving staff. The food is exceptional and more than just "good local food". The owners take great care with the sourcing of the produce, and this shows in the quality of the food they produce. They also have a fantastic selection and knowledge of wine. I even got a quick tour of the few vines his has out back, and you can tell by chatting to him the passion the both have for what they are doing. We had the 24hr slow cooked pork with a cider sauce, and crackling to die for. Sunday lunch is fantastic and a great deal for the 3 courses you can have. Desserts were scrummy. This is not a mere local pub , but something much more. Frankly if this was on my doorstep I would go all the time. Drop in and try it, you won't be disappointed and we will definitely go back.

We stayed near the Harris Arms and went on our first night for convenience but returned on our last night out of choice. A short menu, but freshly cooked meal using local products set in a spot with lovely views from the dining room and garden. The selection of wines is fantastic, with a great selection of wines by the glass and some handy tips from the landlord on what to drink and where to buy. I wouldn't describe it as a gastro pub but good local food.

We recently had a very enjoyable lunch here. Just one course each. I had the duck leg confit and my companion sea bream. Both properly prepared and very tasty. Very good pub food, and the wine by the glass excellent, a Spanish tempranillo, and New Zealand sauvignon blanc respectively. The service was friendly and discreet rather than over-bearing. We always love stopping here en route from Somerset to Cornwall. Rather mystified by the negative reviews on here. They simply don't correspond with our experience. This is after all a pub not a trendy metropolitan restaurant, and one that specialises in wine. We would definitely go back.

We made a late decision to book for dinner on the way back from a business engagement. As Good Food Guide readers for over 40 years, we were attracted by the entry for the Harris Arms. We were warmly welcomed and served in a quiet, courteous and friendly way. The food was very enjoyable - twice-baked soufflé, whitebait, rib-eye steak, megrim sole and a chocolate dessert with pistachio ice cream. It was good food, carefully cooked and never a triumph of dinner-plate art over the quality or quantity of food. The white wine from New Zealand that I ordered was not available and I was quickly offered a taste of an alternative - it was exquisite. When I logged on here, I was surprised to see the recent highly critical comments from one or two people. Yes, the windows looking on to the road could have been a bit cleaner and there was something stuffed into the extractor near the door, but, I think it may have been bubble wrap and I reckon it may have been preventing a draught.Sorry, but, we liked it at the Harris Arms!

Having read rave reviews of this “Marvellous Gastro Pub” in Devon just off the A30 ; I persuaded my wife we should try it out one lunchtime; even though it was quite a trek. It has to be the most disappointing experience we have ever had and that includes snacks from Greasy spoons on the roadside. On arrival at the Pub I was not impressed by the tired décor ( Mis-matched tables; Drab olive green curtains that looked like they had not been washed in years and Rags stuffed in the large Ventaxia by the door and worn out carpets.)That aside we were here for the wonderful food and real ales and whilst I like an old authentic pub I would not be put off by décor if the food and drinks were good.Drinks were the first issue that indicated not all was well with this pub. Whilst waiting to be served I listened to the guest in front of me discussing why there was only one real ale on tap despite the Pub advertising a great selection. The Landladies response was that it was hardly worth even keeping the one; as hardly anyone drank their beer.” (Not a response that any beer lover would care to hear). As a result I decided to go for a Draught Guinness as there was a pump on the bar. Imagine my surprise to be given a can; which I refused; indicating that I had specifically asked for draught Guinness and was not prepared to pay Gastro Pub prices for a lukewarm can of Guinness. With few options left I went for the Sams Poundhouse cider which is a relatively nice Devon cider when kept well; but on this occasion I had to wait about ten minutes while the pump coughed and spurted as it tried to draw up the last dregs from the barrel. It was that close that I was handed a pint that would not have met any weights and measures check and there was no more.We should have cut and run at this stage ; but with little knowledge of the local area and other pubs close by and with short lunch time openings we decided we would eat there whatever. What a mistake I am not sure where the term Gastro Pub came from in the advertising ; but the main meal options consisted of:-Steak and Chips/ Gammon and Chips/Ham Egg and Chips/Sausage and Chips or Fish and chips. The specials board consisted of Comfit Duck leg ; a flat fish or Penne with mushrooms. Not a great selection given the exuberant advertising indicating a 'Specials Board' with exciting meat, game, poultry, fish and shellfish creations."There was also only one vegetarian option for my wife on either the menu or Specials board and when I asked what type of fish came with the fish and chips the barman could not tell me. Equally if you wanted salad peas or anything else with it it was all listed extra and not cheap. When we queried the lack of Vegetarian options the barman indicated that the only option was the one on the board the “Penne with Mushrooms” (Basically take it or leave it)In desperation my wife indicated she would go for a mixed leaf salad( part of the additions to a main meal options) and we could grab something on the way home. I opted for the fish and chips as according to the blurb all fish came "fresh from Dennis Knights of Port Isaac who are renowned for the quality of their produce, plus the occasional 'catch' from Andy on his day off!".Needless to say we were both disappointed; My Fish was watery and weeping on to the plate; covered in a soggy batter and it had clearly been frozen with the batter on. ( I would be interested to know when they last ordered fish from Dennis Knights as they are highly reputable and sell the freshest of quality fish; but what I was served had been kept frozen or did not come from there.) My wife’s “Mixed Leaf Salad” consisted of two leaves of the same lettuce served in an extremely small bowl and topped with two plum tomatoes cut into halves. (For which we were charged £3 – Probably putting limp lettuce leaves on a par with Saffron by weight)It was without doubt the worst dining experience we have ever had; not enhanced by the dirty sticky table and the cobwebs on the wine bottles in the Chimney breast or the less than fragrant Gents loo. My concern is that this pub have supposedly been given so many rave reviews when it is obvious the owners have lost all interest in the enterprise; destroyed any local trade with High Prices; Poor Cleanliness Standards and Abysmal Food and have had to reduce their choice of real ales to one; scrapped draught Guinness and fallen back on an extremely limited menu.I assume having lost all their local trade they are hanging on to catch the unwary tourists flocking down the A30 this summer; who are likely to follow the locals in avoiding the place in the future (Once tried) but be replaced by further tourists falling for the exaggerations made on the pubs behalf by the owners in the various guides.Such a shame that people who stop at this pub will leave Devon feeling that Devon Pubs produce awful food at rip off prices; when in effect the vast majority of the food in Devon Pubs is on a par with the best in the country.I am appalled that I have to give this establishment a minimum of one star; when a negative score would be far more deserved.

The food was fantastic, the land lord is very friendly as well as the young waitress. The land lady severely lowers the reputation by not being welcoming at all. We could order food if we 'ordered quickly' as they had a large party coming soon so we did not feel welcome at all. The land lady then proceeded to overcharge us as she could not find our order, this was a lengthy process while a large family was left unserved at the bar without even a greeting, the same family was eventually told to go elsewhere. Great shame as the food is great aswell as the land lord.

OK, maybe we just got unlucky or maybe we shouldn't have gone at lunchtime but our experience was not good. Made worse by the fact that we chose it on the basis of their wonderful website which promised far more than it delivered. Calling this place a gastro pub is the misnomer of the century. Our friends meet with us once a month for lunch and as we now live about 120 miles away from each other we chose a place to eat approximately halfway between the two of us. That place is chosen after a great deal of research on the net and is chosen for its stated quality of food etc. We don't mind what we pay as long as we get what we pay for. So imagine how we felt when each of us undertook a 120 mile round trip only to be disappointed on so many levels. On arrival at noon our friends entered the pub and one ordered the draught Guinness. The pump hissed and gurgled but produce nothing so the barman handed over a can instead, insisting it 'was just the same'. Considering the pub has won awards for its wine list it came as a bit of surprise that they know nothing about beer at all. This coupled with only one real ale seemed a bit strange for a gastro pub.Our friends were told they were welcome to sit wherever they liked and the pub was empty anyway so they sat in the window, began their drinks and awaited our arrival . Some time later the landlady approached them and told them they would have to move because that table was reserved. Still nobody else in the pub though and plenty of other tables on offer, but no, despite the fact that the table had now been set for our lunch for us, all had to be relocated. At this point we wondered if our 120 mile round trip to this particular establishment had been a good move. A visit to the ladies set the alarm bells ringing. Landlords/Landladies, please be aware - the loos are the one place where there is little else to do whilst sitting other than to take note of the surroundings and they should be clean, tidy and in good repair. The inner door to the toilet was in desperate need of a good scrub with soap and water. The dust was so thick on the ledges I doubt if it had been cleaned in years. The toilet pan was clean but the windows were filthy and the windows surrounds were complete with a thick black mould. The menu left us a bit bemused as it mainly consisted of bar food - chips with almost everything and no sign of gastro food at all unless you consider a duck leg on the specials board Master Chef fodder. Then lunch arrived. Two acceptable starters but the accompanying mustard mayonnaise was a bit of a puzzle. It looked the part and had the right consistency but tasted of .............nothing at all. No mayonnaise taste, no mustard taste. Sadly the tartar sauce that accompanied the fish main course lacked taste too and was presented in miserly amounts which as it turns out, didn't really matter. My main course was just plain ham, eggs and chips. Nothing wrong with it at all except the gastro pub price. The two fish and chip dishes were passable, just like in a fish and chip shop they were. Fish....and chips, nothing else. Again, nothing gastro pub about that but I am assured they tasted OK. Sadly, one other member of the party missed her main course altogether as it had to be sent back. She had skipped the starter course and asked for the twice cooked cheese souffle as a main course. It arrived and we just stared at her plate. The souffle, obviously cooked in a small ramekin had shrunk to nothing. It stood about half an inch high with a screwed up piece of lettuce on top.Not wishing to cause a fuss she said nothing and began to eat it but beyond one mouthful she gave up completely saying it tasted and looked like overcooked scrambled egg. She went straight to the bar and asked that it be returned to the cook (chef would not be an appropriate word) with the message that it was inedible. In fairness she was offered a replacement but chose not to. If she had we would have finished our meals before hers had arrived so it wasn't really an option. Deserts arrived and in fairness they were fine. Not gastro fine but decent pub grub.We were not of course charged for the inedible element of the meal but nothing was offered in compensation for a ruined meal either. A free desert for the lady in question would have been a start.Such a disappointing experience after all the hyperbole on their website and all the effort we made to get there but all is not lost. From now on we will assume that if something seems too good to be true it probably is, especially if it is written by the owners on their own website.

We were struggling to find somewhere for lunch given it was Mothering Sunday - and remembered this pub was on our way home - and as luck would have it - we managed to get a table and I am so pleased we did! Despite being extremely short staffed - the service was still good and very friendly. The pub itself is lovely and cosy with a great atmosphere and the loos are really nice and clean (always a bonus!). The restaurant at the back has the most wonderful view over open countryside - and there is lots of outdoor seating for when it does eventually warm up!The choice of wines by the glass are excellent - and the food - one word - delicious! My husband had whitebait and I had a charcuterie platter - both really good. His main was roast lamb with homemade mint sauce and all the trimmings and I had the best bit of cod I have had in a very long time -on a wonderful tomato base with coriander and herbs - and crushed new potatoes - much better meals than we had eaten the night before in a supposed four star hotel!!. We would have had a pudding, had we the room. The overall range of menu was very good and they also provided child size portions and child sized cutlery (we noticed on the table next to us!)I honestly don't see how anyone could knock this pub - we need to support independent businesses like this - it is a wonderful place - just wish it was nearer to where we live - but we will be back. Try it for yourselves....oh, and it is also extremely good value for money.

En-route we often search for local "gastro-pubs" for lunch. The Harris didn't quite make the grade. It would have deserved another "star" if it wasn't so expensive, but £7+ for a ham sandwich even if the ham is excellent and home cooked and the bread is also high quality is pushing it a bit! The promised side salad garnish turned out to be a extremely few leaves, but nicely dressed. A portion of chips to share was also definitely on the mean side, although again excellent quality. Perhaps the Harris excells at evening meals where diners go for something more substantial, but on the basis of a single visit for a quick lunch, the impression is they are offering based on past glories and the "x" factor is slipping out of sight.

Visited in August as part of family group. Did not wish to complain about our experience at the time, as one of the family was paying for our lunch as a treat. The food was not too bad in all honesty, but I thought it was expensive for what it was and for the area. Service - what service? We waited an hour to be served our main course, only one of the group had a starter (soup), we all had the roast dinner, so how hard could that be? The place was not full, far from it, only a couple of other tables occupied - on a Sunday lunchtime, the place should have been heaving you would think, so maybe the locals were wiser than us and ate elsewhere. The waitress managed to spill gravy over my husbands shirt and trousers, again we said nothing so as not to embarrass the person hosting our meal. OK, she apologised, but i think the least that could have been done would be the offer of a bottle of wine or an offer to pay for dry cleaning - no such offer was forthcoming. We then had a further long wait before anyone deigned to take our orders for pudding, by which time most of us had lost the will to live. Finally, even though she had been standing behind the bar right next to our table for half an hour at least, the landlady pointed the waitress in our direction. The general decor looked a bit tired throughout, and the WC was downright scruffy and dirty - cobwebs and spiders in the window, the paintwork on the door round the handle area was filthy. Sad thing is, an hour with a bucket of hot soapy water would have made it pristine, at the cost of a tenner say, so why was it in this state? When you are paying for the 'privelege' of dining in someone's establishment, why should you feel unwelcome, uncomfortable, and wishing you had stayed in the comfort of your own home with a cheese sandwich? I've had the pleasure of eating in a couple of wonderful 'gastro-pubs' with friendly service and lovely food, on every occasion they were full of people having a great time - in my view the Harris Arms just degrades the very term of 'gastro-pub'.

While staying nearby recently we picked up a leaflet encouraging us to 'Discover the taste of the Tamar Valley'. and from the glowing description therein we decided to pay a visit to the 'Award winning Gastro Pub' The Harris Arms.Unprepossessing on the approach, this roadside hostelry gave the impression that it was guarding a well kept secret, but it wasn't giving anything up as we entered the bar, with the well lit empty bar, complete silence and almost total lack of any kind of atmosphere. The menu and specials board offered a good variety of grandly described choices, so we ordered at the bar and chose a table off to the right.I chose the 'trio of Sausages with mash potato and onion gravy' while my wife opted for 'Fish & chips (tartare sauce optional)'The decor was a bit if a mixed bag, the interior of pub and bar looked as though a lot of thought had gone into choosing colours and textures, but the tables and chairs looked like they'd been there since the 1960s.When the food arrived first impressions were not good. The three sausages were only about three inches long, on resting peacefully on a small island of mashed potato surrounded by gravy with a couple of clumps of caramelised onion. It looked more like a starter than a main. The fish and chips was more substantial with rather tasteless chips accompanying three thin tail ends of what we presume was cod, insulated in a rather thick and brittle batter. Maybe it was a seaside theme but these half fishes were still swimming in a sea of fat. When the waitress asked us the inevitable 'is everything alright?' my wife told her that it was very mediocre, and that the fish was swimming in fat, and that it was really not very nice.We heard the girl go to the kitchen and tell the chef (We believe he may have been the landlord) and then... Nothing. A few more customers entered the pub, and after about 10 minutes the chef did make an appearance, but only to go to another table and talk about wine to the customers. We were completely ignored. When I went up to the bar to pay the landlady was extremely stand offish, giving me an icy glare as I was charged the full price, No apology, no explanation, not concession towards our complaint whatsoever.OK, it was bangers and mash, and fish and chips in a roadside pub in Devon, you could ask what we expected. But this was an award winning Gastro Pub' and each of these courses was £10.95 - not cheap. What we expected was a delightful culinary experience. And as far as being a 'Gastro Pub' - maybe Devon Trading Standards should pay a visit.Very poor. If you see the Harris Arms coming up at the side of the road, keep going and go to a cafe or a proper Gastro Pub.

Having seen the negative reviews for this pub, I'm glad I didn't read them before my visit here. Our experience was quite different; we received good service and the food was excellent. I ordered from the specials board and the garlic prawns starter was lovely, as was my main course of rabbit tagine with cous cous. The rest of the party ordered from the usual menu and were all extremely happy with their meals. We were early diners on a Saturday evening so maybe we were there before it got too busy. When we rang to book for 6.30 no one thought to tell us that they didn't actually open until then so when we arrived at 6.15 for pre-dinner drinks the pub was closed and we had to wait in the car for 15 minutes! It was pouring with rain so we couldn't take advantage of the views from the garden. However, that wouldn't stop me from visiting here again if I was in the area.

Upon entering the pub we were stood waiting at the bar for atleast 5 minutes before we were even acknowledged! After the wait we were then shown to a table by a rather scruffily presented lady (presumably the owner). Before we had even ordered our food we considered leaving due to the atmosphere (no music, no place mats on the tables etc..) but we decided to give it a go as we had been really impressed with all the other local drinking / dining establishments and presumed they would be of a similar or even better standard judging by their prices!! How wrong could we be..? We both ordered drinks and the beer was definately past it's best and didn't taste right but this was just the start.... The food served to us was barely warm and being quite honest I wouldn't have fed it to the dog! When asked if the meal was ok, I explained our views on the food and the reply was 'perhaps he over cooked it'!! The meals were then then taken from us and at no point were we offered an alternative. I was fuming by this point and just wanted to leave. I paid the bill in full and left rather promptly. I am absolutely disgusted that establishments like this continue to trade. The one good point about the whole experience was the young waitress who served our meals, she was very polite and was being seriously over worked by the owners. I work hard for my money and dont mind spending a bit more than the average on a good product or service but when I spend it on something so poor it really grinds my gears. BE WARNED, DO NOT EAT HERE YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED!

We chanced upon this place en route to North Cornwall. Besides a family of four we were the only patrons on a Thursday lunchtime. We wanted lunch and the hoardings outside promised as much. When my partner asked for a white wine she was referred to their blackboard list, which boasted Central London prices in the back of beyond. Nothing was less than £5.75 so far as I could see and she chose a Sauvignon Blanc at six quid which barely broke the 175ml line. One good sniff and it would have been gone. For a light lunch option we both chose Piri Piri Prawns. Though the half dozen shrimp were succulent the sauce was closer to ketchup than anything you might discover in the side streets of old Lisbon. At £6.50 a throw it was not good value.A painting of a nude looms large over the main bar area and, not to beat about the bush, she could do with a trim, if you know what I mean.

We visited the Harris Arms as we were staying locally. At first my partner and I were impressed with the range of wines and equally the awards they have received recently, however the night we had did not reflect this!We ordered two Steaks with a bottle of Châteauneuf du Pape, there were two on the wine list 1999 & 2009, I asked for the 1999 and confirmed the number from the menu. After a while the girl came over to our table and explained they just had to dust it off from the cellar! Unfortunately there must have been quite a lot of dust as they brought the wrong bottle. I am not sure whether the girl just made a mistake or they just didn't have the one I requested but as they had already decanted the wine into a carafe and the two bottles were the same price my partner (who does not like complaining) insisted I don't say anything! However the wine was really nice and I have no complaints about that; just disappointing when you spend that sort of money on a bottle of wine you expect to get what you ordered! You also don't expect it when they state in the menu "The Good Pub Guide 2012 has selected us as one of the Top Ten Wine Pubs in the UK" The steaks were cooked as we requested and the salad straight from the owners garden and we enjoyed our meal. For dessert I requested a crème brulée and my partner had the cheese. On ordering the cheese my partner did request no Blue cheese, however when the plate arrived unfortunately there was blue cheese. The crème brulée was not to my liking as it was very thick and stodgy. When the owner noticed I had not eaten much he did ask what was wrong, to which I explained it was probably just a matter of personal preference, however he came back moments later and agreed with me and insisted he removed it from our bill. Apart from that all the cheeses were nice and I happily obliged when my partner asked if I would like to eat the ones she hadn't finished! On departure they apologised again and were very polite,

As far as appearances go, the Harris Arms wouldn't normally be a place we would choose to eat. As we were recommended it by the Newmoor Park guest house for excellent food we thought we would give it a try - and glad we did! The views from the beer garden were spectacular and as it is listed in Englands top 10 wine pubs its one not to miss even for the two of us who aren't massive on wine. The pub/restaurant was not very busy for a Saturday night so the service we received was as we would expect. The actually food we ate consisted of a delicious starter of piri piri prawns and twice baked goats cheese soufflé, followed by 24 hour aged pork dish accompanied with potato gratin and seasonal vegetables. We must also add the crackling was cooked to perfection! Both the deserts of syrup sponge and chocolate truffle topped off a delicious meal! When we returned to our guest house we gave them some flyers for this lovely restaurant so that furthers guests could share are experience of a great meal in the countryside.

We even went in for a pre meal drink a few days earlier, only to be charged £22.00 for a bottle of their house white wine! Tonight we had 2 adult meals and 1 child meal, 1 coke 2 bottles of wine and we were charged £93.20,,,, it was food even tescos finest microwave meals wouldnt serve up!!! All the certificates displayed are around 2004, the art work they boast was hideous, we were sat looking at a huge painting of a naked lady( that looked like a man!) which was off putting from the start! The tables were sticky, no placemats! And dogs sat in the pathway of the waitresses, at the bar, right next to us, making her having to step over them with hot plates( although the food was cold!) dont get me wrong, we love dogs, but not in a restaurant where you pay that sort of money! There was no background music to create an atmosphere, as locals we are gutted, no wonder it is up for sale, to be sold as a house ( as no on going concern) avoid like the plague, when there are lots of really nice eating houses in the area!!! Dont be fooled by the out dated certificates, gastro pub? More like gastroenteritis pub!!! The last time we were there, they were cleaning the walls in the bar testing out a new cheap cleaner!!! Alarm bells should have rang!!! Hygeine inspectors highly reccommended!!! Stay away!

We've been eating at the Harris Arms intermittently ever since it opened, and generally have had very good meals. Locals have charted its ups and downs, and I'm not entirely surprised at the wide variety of reviews. We went in for lunch (quite early - about 1230) on a sunny Thursday during half term, expecting it to be quite busy. We were the only people there. We opted to sit in the dining room for the lovely views (we wanted to eat on the terrace, but knew we would be too cool in the breeze). Everything we had was delicious, hot and just the right quantity. The wine list, as ever, was interesting and comprehensive. The service was OK, but by the time we left there were just two elderly couples eating in the bar. This used to be a really popular venue but most of the other dining pubs in the locality are patronised far more heavily. It certainly was on the expensive side - not ridiculously so, but rather more than some other gastropubs in the area. It wasn't a special occasion or anything, but the sheer emptiness was disconcerting. A shame, because we have enjoyed some lovely meals here over the years, and one couldn't escape the feeling that the whole operation was a bit tired. I would give it 3 1/2 stars if I could.

The owners could not have been more accommodating or helpful. We were on a tight schedule, arriving at 12.00 noon. We had informed the owner that we would need to be away by 1.10 p.m. We were sitting in the car park and one of the staff invited us to come in. We were given a window table with a view over the beautiful countryside. The service was very efficient and pleasant. My husband ordered a whitebate starter which he really enjoyed. This was followed by slow cooked roast pork with freshly prepared vegetables. The vegetables would have been improved if they had been glazed in a little butter. There were rather too many potatoes and not quite enough veg but the meal was enjoyable. I had a rich dark chocolate torte with cherries soaked in alcohol. It was delicious.I felt it was such a shame that the place was practically empty. Perhaps if the locals give it a try the area will retain a good pub that deserves to thrive. Apparently they had been busy on Saturday night. The price was reasonable. £15.95 for two courses.

I really can't understand why this pub has had good reviews because our experience lat night was appalling! Myself and 11 family members visited the pub to celebrate a W/A. When we arrived the staff were polite enough to show us to our table but that's pretty much where our service ended. Throughout the whole time we were there they couldn't even organise a drinks order, often missing off half the table then disappearing for lengths of time leaving us wondering if we had been forgotten about.A family member asked about the wine options and asked if they had any house wine, to which the young girl returned advising they don't do any house wines and the cheapest bottle of wine was £19.00 (not that this is a problem but not everyone can spend that much on a bottle of wine). The menu indicates..would you like food with your wine as there is about 10 pages of wine and 1 page for food. You don't have a choice of food, not even a chicken option and if you were a vegetarian well you only had one choice! Starters: our order of food was taken ok but the staff had no knowledge of the food and no enthusiasm to talk you. Amongst our order 5 of us had the duck and 5 of us had the soup. The staff then returned saying they could only do 2 portions of duck so the other three opted for the soup. We think they must not of had enough portions of soup either but couldn't admit it because the now 8 of us who had the soup though it was absolutely disgusting! It was so watery and tasteless all of us added lots of s&p to make it barely edible, the bread was dry and no butter was offered. When they collected the plates we told them how awful it was, to which the young girl did apologise and said she'd tell the chef but we heard nothing else about it. By the time our mains came out, we all needed a drink so eventually we were able to flag a waiter down to order some more, we asked for jugs of water to which they brought out a small jug and 4 glasses (yes there were 12 of us in total so not sure how they added that one up). I asked for a pint this time as I wasn't sure how long we'd be waiting to be waited on again. You wouldn't think you could get a pint wrong but 2 of us had really bad ones (the guy informed us he did a barrel change in between) they were really cloudy and not very nice to drink.Mains: 3 of us had the vegetarian options, which was a vegetarian cottage pie. It was detailed on the specials board as having lentils, carrots, peas, onion etc topped with mashed potato and cheese..well thank goodness they put the cheese on the top as it was the only tasty thing about it, and it was actually lentils topped with mashed potato and cheese, oh and not forgetting the one pea we found amongst all the lentils. The dish cost £10.95 and was the size of my fist!!!! The vegetables that accompanied the meal (a small dish shared between 4 people) was so small and only consisted carrots and cabbage, that we only had about 2 carrot sticks each and a spoonful of cabbage. We did ask for some more which they did bring out but they told us that they are usually only allowed to give the one portion. So that probably cost us an arm and a leg. The rest of the meals were just about edible but a lot were quite dry and tough. We had a couple bottles of bubbly for toasts with our main meal which they forgot to bring out to us but eventually did when we asked again.Desserts: no one had desserts! I think we'd all had enough appalling food by then that we couldn't face another round. So most of us had coffees and teas, which again you wouldn't think you could get wrong but one of our group had a peppermint tea,yes it's only water and a tea bag, but the cup they brought it out in they must of got out the pond or something as it smelt like stale fish water. Yuck! I think the best bit abut the evening was that we couldn't stop laughing at how awful every course, including service and drinks, was and the the staff just didn't seem to care.Another highlight of the night was the fact that I nearly missed the step going back to my seat because I was gobsmacked to see the tables by the bar had butter!Needless to say none of us will ever return to the pub. And a few of us left feeling quite unwell!!I wouldn't even give this pub a one star, but it's the minimum I had to put!

Took visiting family here for an early dinner on a Saturday and was overall pretty disappointed. We were the first to arrive and the male host was pretty welcoming, directing us to our table. However he soon disappeared (cooking too perhaps?) and was replaced by the lady host who seemed to appear and disappear. At one point, probably after we had been there around twenty minutes, a couple came into this country pub and must have been standing at the bar for around ten minutes before any member of staff appeared at all behind the bar to welcome them (congratulations on their patience, I might have left!).The lady host didnt crack a smile or speak one hospitable word to us throughout the duration of our meal! There were just a few other tables taken. So, with the less than happy host, few quiet customers the atmosphere was, how can I put it? well, Dead!As for the food, three of us ordered the same dish, duck confit. Shortly afterwards the male host (mentioned earlier) appeared from out the back stating that he could only serve 2 full portions of duck and 1 small portion. The reason he gave was that when he hasn't many table reservations for a Saturday night they dont bother making any fresh duck confit but wait until the next weekend! Can't believe a chef would say that to his guests, admitting the food we were about to eat was not cooked fresh, in fact we were left wondering just when our food had been cooked! One of us being pregnant reacted quickly and opted for the small portion (which they offered to sell at a cheaper rate). However, we all now lacked confidence in the food and the pregnant one didnt touch hers but passed it to her husband (she tucked into her sons sausage and mash instead, which she said was quite OK).Another one of us had a pork dish, which h enjoyed and claimed was really tasty.Great wine and the young waitress who managed our table was very polite and friendly, doing a pretty good job. The bill; can we have an itemised bill please? We didnt know what we had paid for what relative to food dishes. The drinks were split between wine and 'other' drinks, which was good because we noticed that we had been charged for 2 rather than 1 glass of wine. There was not a problem with this, it was a simple error but could have been handled in a more hospitable manner, i.e. the lady host standing behind the bar just feet away from us could have apologised but no.All in all, we were all disappointed and unfortunately wont be returning, which is a great pity because Im sure it could be a great country pub. I dont know, perhaps its better in the summer when a little bit of sunshine makes us all a little happier and food gets turned over more quickly.

I was really looking forward to visiting this place as it had a bit of a gastropub reputation and I'd heard the food was great. Whilst I sort of agree, the food wasn't bad, the choice was a bit uninspired and unmatched in my opinion. Some of the menu appeared to be your typical hearty portioned pub grub, whilst some of it was a bit minimalist cordon bleu, but the prices were all the latter. The wine list was vast but they didn't appear to actually have all that was on it or know it too well. The place was distinctly lacking in atmosphere and whilst the staff were friendly enough, I don't feel it's appropriate to lean across the bar and take your order whilst you're all seated at the table. And the fact that on a Friday night there was only one other table eating and no other patrons in the bar, speaks volumes. So good food but a bit overpriced for run of the mill pub grub, which is what most of the menu really was.

The pork was perfectly cooked, soft, moist and very tasty and accompanied by perfect crackling and cider gravy. As we were leaving I commented to the land lady that the pork was excellent. She promptly went and got the Chef, Andy, who explained and wrote down in detail how it was cooked. A really nice touch and very much appreciated.

I know a lot of kids who wouldn't entertain this but luckily our 4 year old is pretty open minded! She ate roast chicken with olives and garlic in a white wine sauce!! Ask for Andy's for a recommendation. The Harris is a pub with restaurant so it is informal - never rushed even if its late. On a long journey we wanted somewhere to stop for a meal and found the Harris Arms in the Good Pub Guide; we were particularly attracted to it as it is dog-friendly. We stopped at lunchtime on Sunday for lunch and it was superb. We had a nice welcome from the staff and were seated on the terrace overlooking the gardens and rolling fields. There was a really good choice on the set menu from which you can choose two or three courses and my 24-hour slow roasted pork was the best Sunday lunch I have ever had (away from home!), really tender and with proper roast potatoes rather than the usual frozen deep fried imitations. My husband had the fish and chips option and was really impressed with the haddock, very well cooked and lovely crispy batter. The pub itself is possibly a little tired and from the road does not look the most inviting but inside it is cozy and traditional. There is a good selection of beer and wine on offer and friendly service. The ladies toilet could do with a lick of paint and a bit of a smarten-up but this is the only criticism I have. This is well worth a detour and deserves the awards it has and the mentions it has the Michelin Guide, Good Food Guide etc. Please give this pub a chance and don't just pass it by.

Visited here for a drink on our travels early in the week we visited the area, then went back for dinner mid-week. The service was really quick and unlike other reviews, the staff were very helpful and friendly, even giving directions to many travellers diverted off the A30 due to an accident who came in for help. Our party of 6 all had starters and main courses, the starters were all very nice but of the main courses, the rare rib-eye steak looked like it had been pounded to within an ince of its life as it was very thin, and although cooked rare, no juices could be found in it. The medium rib eye however did appear to be a little better. Three of our party all had the confit of duck and all said it was very good and my vegetarian main was tasty.Only a couple of us could manage deserts and these were okay, although three of our party ordered liqueur coffees as their pud but these arrived after the deserts had been finished. The choice on the menu isn't vast, and as one of our party isn't a very adventurous eater, she was a bit stuck for choice. On the other hand, there is a great wine list and our choice didn't disappoint. My only reason for the average review was the quite frankly poorly cooked steaks. This isn't a cheap and cheerful place to eat, 5 starters, 6 mains, 3 puds, 3 liqueur coffees, 2 bottles of wine, came to just over £200, and I'm not sure it was worth it, if I'm honest.

It was definitely a small pub but with incompetent staff who didn't know how to pour drinks or even which wines they had behind the bar, very mediocre food from a menu with a large number of items unavailable and poor service at the table I cannot see where the high reputation came from. For example my brother had a steak which was adequately cooked but served with just a dozen chips on the plate and nothing else. The prices were high, the food mediocre and the service poor. We visited the Harris arms twice during our week in devon. We were looking for a family friendly and dog friendly pub with good food and relaxed atmosphere, we were certainly not disappointed. The landlord and land lady were very friendly and the staff exceptionally polite wand attentive. The service was exellent. Children and dogs are made very welcome . Dogs are allowed in the bar area only, we booked in advance to ensure a table was available. There is very comfortable seating in the bar area to eat at and the same menu available as in the main dining area. The food was exellent although a little expensive. The food is all locally sourced and cooked to perfection with portion sizes very generous so we felt it was worth the money. We will definitely return to the Harris Arms next time we are in Devon .

Rabbit stew (very clean plate), hake (cooked to perfect), and don't miss the red cabbage side dish (I could have eaten a plate of that and nothing else). Fresh, home cooked food in wonderful surroundings, the views from the patio are truly stunning. And if that wasn't enough you have a wine expert (Andy) on hand to tell you everything you could possibly want to know about what you are drinking - this man knows his wines. Also highly recommend the P Lancelot Royer Champagne - excellent choice.

Finding a suitable place to break one's journey for a meal becomes ever more difficult as Service Stations now dominate trunk routes. This is a little gem less than 5 minutes off the A30 with great food (whether a snack or a full a la carte), drink (a choice of two real ales and good wines) and such attentive hosts. On top of which, when the weather's good, a view to die for from the patio. And we almost missed it because one unlucky traveller(barry price )'s report dominates the recent reviews. Fortunately I read the reviews further on and so was not deterred. Just as well, as I needed somewhere to stop where we could dine with our Chairman and his wife en route to Penzance.Hopefully our experience will now be the first to be read on this site.

Arrived at about 1pm for a pee and a bite to eat. We were two couples and requested seperate bills which threw the landlady into confusion straight away We assumed she must be the landlady by her rather abrupt manner who obviously hadn't graduated from charm school any time recently. However looking around at all the good food awards the pub had won we decidedto give it a go. We ordered four sausage and mash so as not to tax the chef too much and sat at our table to await our meal. It wasn't long before the waitress came out to inform us they only had enough sausages for three of us and would sombody mind ordering somthing else.We found this somewhat supprising for a so called "Gastro Pub" but I bit the bullet and ordered an alternative. There were only two other people in the place apart from us and they suffered a similar fate when trying to order a Rump Steak from the specials board only to find that was not available either.Anyway we had our meal which I suppose was adequate but nothing to write home about and duely went to pay our bills. The couple we were with disputed the amount of their bill to which the landlady immediatly went on the offensive ranting about the cost of vegatables and questioning the right of our friends to queary the bill anyway. A heated exchange followed resulting in the landlady taking a pound from the till and tossing it on the bar saying in a disgruntled manner that she couldn,t be bothered to argue over a pound. When we were outside in the car park I checked my bill and found I also had been overcharged by a pound but being of a non confrontational nature and knowing the landlady,s temprament I decided to let sleeping dogs lie.As a result of our experience in our one and I can assure you only visit to this establishment I shall not be recomending it to my friends and suggest that other travellers give this place a wide berth and go into Launceston instead. Basil Fawlty look out, there's competition about down the road..

After a day out at the Eden Project we stopped off here for an early evening dinner with the children and in-laws. The menu was more interesting than your standard pub fare even if 12 pages of it was the wine list! The owners seem very proud of their wine and their awards which are a little in-your-face for my liking. We ordered from the menu - rather hastily due to the fact we had the owner lurking by our table for the entire evening. Even when escorting my daughter to the toilet she seemed to follow.... The food arrived - delivered by a very friendly waitress. I ordered the rabbit with prunes which was nice but rather bland and not nearly enough. If you're going to serve small portions then you best be sure the taste is something special....sadly it wasn't. The prunes had all the taste cooked out of them and the mash was tedious. My average mark is not really down to the food though but more for the strange atmosphere...it felt like we were being watched the entire time and our kids not really welcome. Simply not a relaxing experience. Above their station.

3 of us and the over-riding comment was just about ok. Starters fine - main courses not so good. Rump steak should have a bit of fat on it and it was tough - having said that there was no offer to cut the price. Bit pricey for what it was - not my first choice in future.

We arrived after 2pm so weren't holding out much hope of getting some lunch, but there was no problem at all. We given a warm welcome and made to feel at home. Very friendly husband and wife team. The food was very tasty and not too expensive which makes a nice change from where we live. We will definitely be recommending this pub to people when travelling down to the west for their holidays.

Located less than 5 minutes off the A30, so stopped for lunch on the way down to Falmouth, which in turn was about an hour further on. So a handy spot on a longish drive from the Midlands. The place is easy to find, we arrived at about 1:45, so a little concerned that we may have been pushing it a bit for lunch as previously stated on earlier reviews. This was not the case and we were welcomed by a very pleasant young lady behind the bar, who was cheerful and helpful. The food was ok, nothing to write home about, we had a couple of things off the Traditional Pub meals options. There were other more exotic things, so they may be more appealing. At the back of the downstairs restaurant there is a very nice open decking area with stunning views, if it had not been quite so windy, it would have been a great spot to enjoy the sunshine.Would we go again, yes, but would try something else off the menu.

We booked a table prior to arriving. When we walked in the pub was not busy but the landlady and barman were behind the bar and did not acknowledge us with any sort of greeting. I said that we had a table booked and there was nothing laid up. The website is very misleading, I think it must have been done quite a few years ago, as it was very run down, even the landlady is a few years older, and manners were slighly astray! The food was ok, nothing special, friends had plaice, which was very over cooked. I had a Pork cheek which was meant to have wild mushrooms with it, I questined where they were and she snapped that they were in it! There were no mushrooms on my plate, but as we were catching up with friends that we had not seen for a couple of years, I was not going to make a fuss. The toilets had the most awful overpowering airfreshner (rose type smell) that it was a struggle to breath. All in all, a very dissapointing pub, after their website selling it so well.

This was a fabulous evening the owners and staff made my dads birthday very special, three course meal for over 40 people, each course was excellent in taste and everything came out hot. The best sticky toffee punning I have every tasted. They made everyone happy and made sure everyone had everything they needed. The wine selection is one of the best I've seen. Excellent all round, would highly recommend for a function evening, just a meal or a drink! Thank you so much again for making it a fabulous night. See you soon

Great Puddings.Only one ale available.Pub is focussed on wine.We went for valentines so it seemed had to eat from the valentines menu at £30 each for three courses. I really struggled with three courses didn't have the alternative of two.Mains were good .Seemed a little overpriced for soup, mushroom resotto and sorbet but my partner had venison which he said was very good. The pub garden is nice

Lovely old pub with character just off the a30 but while the food was reasonable - tasty pub grub - we felt very ruhed to leave after a lunch sitting. Following our mains we were asked if we would like pudding, but while were still finishing we were presented with the bill and told abruptly that they were shutting. We spent £40 in less than an hour so we didn't feel it was good value for money.

Having used the Harris Arms many times over the seasons, it was no surprise to find the usual friendly welcome and excellent selection of wines to complement the well renown menu that is the 'hallmark' of this very well rehearsed restaurant.Andy & Rowena Whiteman are well known within the bespoke restaurateurs arena with many justly deserved awards to their credit. Our party arrived just prior to the end of service and were well catered for from the both 'specials' and the regular menu.

Ive eaten at this pub on numerous occasions and think it is one of the best pub/restaurants in the area. The food is always first class, with a very good specials board, seasonal produce, and meat supplied by an excellent local butcher. The selection of beers and wines is comprehensive. The owners and staff are always pleasant and welcoming and if you like pub grub thats well above average this pub will not disappoint.

Over priced and very poor quality, we went with friends for a pre-booked meal on a Friday night, the meal was of a very poor standard, steaks were very tuff and a lack of content on the plate, this could explain why we were the only four there at 20.00hrs on a Friday night, when we left they were empty . We will definately not be back.

The Harris Arms is the second great gastropub we have found in the Launceston area (the first was the Rising Sun at Altarnun), but this one is even better. The food was tasty and eclectic and the choice of wines was broad, in some cases unusual and certainly excellent. The pork cheeks have been commented on by another reviewer, but they deserve another mention. They were tender with a sauce that was rich and deep. The Piri-piri prawns were tender and tasty (I might have expected a little more spice, but that's just a detail) and the chicken cacciatori was soft and flavoursome. We stumbled across this pub, but will certainly be making the trip again - there are many more dishes on the menu that need trying!

We stayed in lifton about 5mins from portgate and decided to go to the Harris even though we were told it wa pricey, it's not, the food was fabulous and very reasonably priced for a pub with so many awards, the staff were great and very friendly, oddly apart from the owner who barley acknowledged we existed, but the barmaid and waitress more than made up for it, dogs and muddy boots are welcome so we will be back.

We were staying at a b&b nearby and had booked in advance to ensure we had dinner within walking distance. We ate in the bar. Good real ales available.Service was good though the waiter didn't know what the cheeses were on the cheese board!Food was good for a pub.We were there on a Friday and there were a number of people trying to get a meal who hadn't booked and it was full. However the staff did try and juggle things in the bar to fit people in.We'd go again if in the area.

We went with the kids and dog on a wednesday lunchtime. Nice place, friendly and clean toilets. We went as we were curious and hungry! On the plus side, good service and easy menus with tasty food. On the neg, we thought a little pricey (9.50 forAdult fish and chips which our 8 year old polished off completely!) And we expected 'proper' chips like we get at our local in southwell, but these were frozen straight to the fryer type, but then again they were only 2.50 a bowl so judge for yourself. If I'm being really picky more than two ales would have been nice, but tthe cornish cider was very cold. You know I'm a bit disappointed by the hype, and all the copies of good food guide etc displayed in the entrance were a bit self indulgent. However they are in the middle of nowhere so good on them for trying to be something a bit nicer than the norm.

A special dinner to celebrate 25 years of the village orchard- and the Drake came up trumps as always. Being a non-meat eater, a special fish dish was produced just for me, and it was superb, with sea bream and samphire- absolutely delicious. Full marks to the Drake Manor Inn

Such a lovely unassuming pub full of excellent gourmet locally sourced dishes, high end presentation and service, and reasonable prices. It’s unique for the area and is definitely a dinner destination spot but at the same time it’s an excellent spot for a casual visit. At this pub you’ll find multiple cosy dining rooms (it’s a bit of a fun maze), a welcoming small but well equipped bar and something for everyone to enjoy e.g. mocktails and lots of GF & veggie options. Totally recommend!
