Came for dinner - lovely atmosphere and good service, but disappointing food. Tofu burger was an unseasoned slab of tofu deep-fried; I would expect more for the steep prices. A shame.

Lovely location in beautiful village. Sat under cover in the garden and enjoyed the heaters as it was a little cool... lovely fish just thought batter was a little thick and tough... made staff aware... woukd certainly eat here again. Staff were very friendly too...

Lovely village pub in the village. Food and service...not so good! We brought our friends here as we have eaten here on a few occasions. The prices are high and the food is poor. My meal was forgotten then when it arrived part of it was not what I ordered so had to wait. The pie was dry, the veg was chewy and enough for a child! The fish was tasty but a very small meal again. We didn't bother with dessert. £80 including 4 regular drinks. The tables are so close together. The table squashed in next to us was occupied by 2 people with 3 large dogs and one small one! Did not enjoy dogs sniffing at our food, scrambling about and barking. Not a good experience!

Went for a birthday lunch. Steak & chips £28, Prawn Curry £21 - plus drinks, both mealsvery very small and both seemed to be missing 'something'. Would of expected more sides with the steak - perhaps peas, salad or some onion rings not just very small number of chips , single mushroom & half tomato Curry was tasty but TINY more starter size - pity didn't have a bit of naan, chutney or poppadom (disappointed with that). Advice is be prepared to add extra sides to dishes and consequently a larger bill at the end - was planning on repeat visit but won't be back.

We have been to this pub many times, and it's always been hit and miss, but recently the food has been pretty poor. Last Sunday we had fish and chips, two roast dinners and a burger. It took a long time to arrive, the staff didn't check on us during our meal, and the food was just terrible. Fish inedible, batter chewy, yorkshire puddings tasted days old. All of us were disappointed. I have been once before and was given a raw burger which I had to return. At other times the food and staff have been better.

Charming rural pub, in a beautiful village garden. Friendly local feel.

Excellent location, slightly disappointed with our meals. Steak was a little bit chewy. It also looked bland as there was no side salad. One has to take the rough with the smooth. Would certainly recommend this pub. Lunch time menu excellent. Pricy but the service is good. Friendly staff. I prefer to be served by the same individual rather than different staff members.

Well… I stayed overnight in this hotel. It has a lot of character and charm. BUT, for the price, the beds are not great. Old fashioned spring mattress. Sigh. Over 120 pounds a night, it should be top end European mattresses. And, I stored my bicycle in the shed provided. The area around the shed is a total and complete disgrace – completely uncared-for. It would be So easy to fix this. You can tell if a place is really cared for when you look at the hidden corners – and this one is a disgrace.

What a little gem! We enjoyed a night away here recently and stayed in one of the converted rooms opposite the pub. There is a lovely beer garden with an outside bar, partly covered with heating. Blankets are provided should it be a bit cooler. The food is excellent, top quality and service is very good too. Nearby is the gorge which is well worth a visit. Will definitely be returning.

We had the best roast dinner we have ever had here. The service was excellent as well.

Lovely old English pub with great food, beer garden, outside bar and canopy . Close to the Granite Way bike track, next to the old Lydford jail and Gorge. Recommended

We have visited The Castle Inn many times over the years & the food is so good, very well presented and delicious. The atmosphere is very good with candles lit everywhere even for lunch which creates a fantastic feel to the place, the waitress was attentive and can not fault this interestingly old charming country Inn right on Dartmoor....worth visiting & a great stopping place if out walking.

Lovely place. I had a roast, and it was the best I’ve had in a long time. Definitely recommend this place, particularly if you visiting the Gorge or cycling around there. The service was also excellent, by the cat as well.

Great Cream Tea in a lovely cosy pub

This is our go to place for an amazing meal, not just the food but the service and the atmosphere is perfect. Never let down our only downfall is how far away we live from it!

We only stop for a quick drink, fast friendly service, great atmosphere and open fire along with a great pint of beer. What's not to like, highly recommended

We've eaten here several times and the staff are friendly and food lovely and good value. Great atmosphere. We haven't stayed so can't comment on the rooms.

A recommendation to us that lived up to its reputation. Although the pub was quite full the food didn’t take too long to arrive, which was of excellent quality and well presented. Dog friendly. Car parking is across the lane opposite the pub. On busy days spaces might be at a premium.

This is very close to lydford gorge and is a wonderful place to explore. The inn is quite busy at times but the breakfast and room was comfortable and clean.

Best mushroom pizza I have had.

Here, today I had the best pie I have ever tasted! It was magnificient with more meat than you would have thought possible to pack into a pie. The rest of the meal was fabulous too. We were made to feel very welcome, were served good beer and spent a very pleasant afternoon in front of the roaring fire. A great find and highly recommended.

We went here for an evening meal for my birthday after hearing great things. Honestly, what an absolutely delicious meal. I would say it was one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. Perfection. Everything was just outstanding. Even the tomato!! It was cooked and seasoned to perfection. The service was excellent and the pub itself is a classic Devon pub. Welcoming and cozy. We cannot wait to get back there. Top marks all round.

Friendly place to stop off for a coffee whilst on a bike ride.

We only stopped during a bike ride for a couple of drinks. Lovely old pub with a very nice garden with seating. Food looked amazing so will return for a meal at some point!

Absolutely lovely post-Boxing day lunch! Venison, fish and chips, dartmoor ice cream and sticky toffee pudding was absolutely divine. Lovely service and atmosphere made a quite cozy and warm experience. As someone who frequently visits local pubs, it was nice to have such a pleasant afternoon with friendly staff and truly tasty food. We shall be back! Thank you!

Great, cosey pub/restaurant with some breathtaking walks nearby. Burger was nice, staff very friendly. Would reccomend if you are nearby.

Prices very steep and therefore you would expect good polite and respectful customer service however an older lady answering the phone (initially) and then serving customers (including myself) is anything but that! Very rude, inconsiderate, numerous things she did reflected a disregard for customers whatsoever and a rude inconsiderate attitude which you would tolerate in a cheap bar or back street restaurant but not one charging premium prices and promising a quality service. Absolute folly! Won’t be returning because of the service due to this particular waitress. Shame as the other staff were relatively polite and courteous.

Would definitely recommend staying here and having dinner at the pub. Rooms are kitted out to a high standard. Breakfast and dinner were great. We stayed in the building opposite the main pub which I believe have been furnished recently

Great dog friendly pub with a good selection of Ales. Just off the granite way and close to the gorge so worth calling in for a pit stop if you're close by. A cracking open fire also adds to a great evening atmosphere

This is truly a find on Dartmoor. Brilliant pub with plenty of character, complete with roaring fire. Great beer. Food is fantastic, staff are really friendly and the rooms are a joy. They are truly beautiful, clean, modern and totally in keeping with the age of the property. Beds are really comfy. Have revisited 3 times since this original review and I stand bye everything I wrote. Great pub. Great accommodation. Great food.

Very welcoming on a wet and windy day. We came in for shelter with a toddler and staff brought paper and crayons to entertain the little one. Food was great, really enjoyed our visit

If you like olde worlde inns you'll struggle to beat this one. The minute you step through the door and smell the wood smoke from the open fireplace, you're transformed back in time. The low beamed ceilings and the stone floors add to a relaxing atmosphere. I think the barmans name was Ben, he was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. We hadn't intended to eat there , but ordered food and wasn't disappointed, the food was above our expectations and the service we received was first class. I would highly recommend the castle inn at lydford.

Well worth a visit. Highly recommend. We have just had lunch and it was the best meal we have enjoyed on our mini break in the area. The chef knows there ingredients and how to present great food full of flavour. I would happily recommend a visit. The staff were very friendly, happy to have a chat and clearly know how their trade.

Lovely pub/restaurant, didn't stay this time but had a most fabulous lunch.

A unique 16th century pub next to the Lydford gorge and Castle. Starting point of "Lydford Law". Several well appointed rooms which are well clean n tidy. Excellent food served quickly. But beyond all this the atmosphere is beyond description. The interior very much resembles a 16th century ale House. Outdoors a lovely dining/drinking area amongst a vast garden where one can feel lost in a jungle. The stunning interior boasts large fireplaces which are good for walkers/rambers anxious for warmth and a pint. Artifacts are found here and there. Truely English experience.

What a lovely pub and a great meal. Staff were very accommodating and the pub was very atmospheric. We read it’s advisable to book, so we did, and I would pass this advice on- was really busy especially for a Monday night which only goes to show how popular it is.

Lovely place. Spotless clean. Lots of asmosphere. Lovely friendly staff who made us welcome & couldn't do enough for us. The food was really beautiful and plentyful tho we only had breakfast. Our room was so sweet and the bed comfortable. Honestly can't say enough good things and I want to go back one day.

Enjoyed a Monday lunch. Food was delicious. Service attentive. Always had consistent experience here over many years camping locally. A delight on our trip.

I had a fantastic dining experience at this restaurant! The historic building's charm added a unique touch, and the food was incredibly delicious. The cozy atmosphere and impeccable service made it even better.

Service is always A1 here. I come with a fussy family but we are always happy with our meals. I will say the value for money depends on what you appreciate from a meal out. For me I would say it's worth the price.

Always a fantastic menu, great choice and a great atmosphere.

We came here as we were staying at the campgrounds nearby, we had a fantastic experience. The food was amazing, the service was great and all in all it was a superb evening, which we will not hesitate to repeat if we are in the area again.

Stopped for a pint of Tribute after visiting the historical monument next door (We'll let you Google that yourself). Lovely old worlde traditional pub. We'll be back...😁

Ein absolut idyllischer Ort. Lydford hat eine lange Geschichte. Die Bereiche Pub und Restaurant sind voneinander getrennt. Die Speisekarte ist sehr vielfältig, von einfachen Gerichten (Steinofen-Pizza) über traditionelle (Steak und Ale Pie) bis zu internationaler Küche ist alles dabei und sehr gut zubereitet. Der Service ist topp. Preise sind moderat. Es gibt auch einen großen Biergarten, Parkplätze sind kostenlos. Auch die Umgebung (Lydford Gorge) ist einfach traumhaft. Die Zimmer kann ich nicht bewerten, weil wir dort nicht übernachtet haben.

Just had the best lunch for a long time. The Venison was cooked perfectly, moist, tender and delightfully pink😋😋😋. Also it was a pleasure to be served by exceptionally friendly and impeccably dressed staff. A real gem of a pub👍👍👍👍👍

Ordered a cream tea and the scones were very good. The server forgot the tea though and we had to ask for it after eating the scones. Service is poor. A but pricey for a cream tea but beautiful beer garden at the back. Recommended if passing through.

We made the journey for Sunday lunch as it was recommended to us. We booked and ordered 3 Sunday roasts. Well, I don't know if it's a North or South thing or we are a bit uncouth, but the beef was raw, barely cooked around the edges, our knives could hardly cut it. Asked for it to be cooked a little more, don't know what they did as it was sliced. Any way long and short, £100 for 3 of us, won't go back.

Der Biergarten ist wunderschön. Das Personal sehr freundlich. Wir hatten Cream Tea mit sehr leckeren Scones. Der Innenraum und die Zimmer sind sehr schön und historisch.

We had a stunning stay at the Castle Inn. The rooms have a lovely mix of elements of the old building, but with all the modern luxury. We also were lucky enough to have a delightful dinner, also with a great choice of veggie options. The only regret was that we could only stay one night

My wife and I have been going to the Castle for many years and have always loved it and the food. So I never looked at reviews - wish I had. A very disappointing and expensive experience. Chicken Caesar salad with chicken over fried to point of some of being inedible and salad swamped with so much mayonnaise that it totally dominated the salad - and I am a mayonnaise lover. My wife's battered fish so overcooked it was dry and the batter rock solid. We ordered a bottle of rose wine which was barely chilled and we asked for it to be chilled all we were given was a steel bottle container that might have been in a fridge. So disappointing - won't be going back in a hurry and the saddest thing is I have never given a negative review for anything before.

Deze middeleeuwse Inn serveert een prima maaltijd. Wij hadden vooraf gereserveerd en wisten dat we buiten moesten dineren. Echter was dit wel overdekt en verwarmd zo werd ons verteld. Bij aankomst bleek dat de terrasverwarmer niet aan was terwijl het best fris was om 7:00pm, en je zat op een houten bank zonder rugleuning. Ook moest je het eten en drinken binnen aan de bar bestellen, het drinken zelf meenemen en gelijk betalen. Het eten werd dan wel weer aan tafel geserveerd en was heerlijk. Zou hier zeker nog wel willen terugkomen maar nooit meer buiten dineren.

We were first seated at a table in a walkway and the staff were not over happy when we asked to move. My husband’s curry was tiny and jasmine rice was very over flavoured. My burger again had too many strong flavours that you could hardly taste the beef. And all wildly over priced. Such a disappointment as this was meant to be a special birthday meal and a reminder of when we used to regularly frequent this inn in our youth many years ago. The food was then exceptional.

Food expensive. Had venison 2 very small slices and a sausage. 2 small turnip pieces and equivalent to small mushrooms Plus lots of dots on the plate All for only £20!! When I asked if there was anything else to come I was told I would have to order and pay for any additions at the bar The 2 lattes were only luke warm Taking advantage of its location I believe Not a good impression to tourists

A lovely overall experience for our one night cycling break. Quick friendly check in Fresh milk, good quality tea in the room . Very comfortable. Very tasty evening meal. All expertly cooked and very helpful and friendly staff. Lovely beer garden. It is a proper old English Pub and good to see it is so busy as so other pubs are closing by the droves Please support our country pubs.

Lovely food friendly staff great service

Was knocked to the floor by a head-level beam while walking from the car park to the bar through a dimly lit corridor. The beam is dark coloured. Be very careful if you're wearing a hat. Can't comment on the food as we were an hour early for the full menu.
