We really enjoy visiting Poppy's when we visit Tavistock. Food always freshly prepared and great service.

Gorgeous cafe, with reasonably priced, good quality food, served by friendly staff and visited by locals and tourists alike. The best ham and cheese panini I've had in a long time!

What a warm welcome we had when we walked through the door two lovely ladies , we only had tea coffee and two tea cakes but loved the fact they gave you plenty of butter thank you ladies . we will return next time we are in tavistock maybe for lunch .

A pleasant small cafe around the back of the town market. Does not have the atmosphere of some cafes, but the morning coffee & tea cake were nice.

We spotted this little cafe and noticed it was quiet inside and out, which appealed. We went inside, chose a table there and ordered brunch. The food was good and arrived promptly. After we had started eating, it rapidly became quite a lot busier inside, but the outdoor tables were all still empty. We finished our brunch a little more quickly than we might have done, paid and sat on one of the outside tables for a few minutes, looking over some photos we had taken that morning and planning what to do next. To our shock, the owner came outside and told us we couldn't sit there. We thought, maybe it was some sort of joke, at first, as it didn't really make any sense. The owner said she realised we were paying customers but wanted us gone. Not a joke. This was despite the fact that all the other outdoor tables were free. It made no sense and was quite upsetting, really. We could have just eaten a bit more more slowly and stayed at the inside table a few more minutes instead. We had assumed moving outside would have been helpful to the owner as well as ourselves, freeing up the limited indoor seating. Won't be going here again!

It's very rare to come across great customer service, but Poppy's cafe certainly came up trumps! I had ordered a sausage, bacon and egg baguette, which btw was enough for two, so I shared it with my brother in law. When it arrived, the waitress offered me some tomato ketchup in a satchet, and I've had the same type before and they taste awful, so I told her and said it was a shame they didn't have any Heinz. 2 minutes later she came out with a small ramikin dish full of Heniz ketchup and said the chef had scoured his cupboards for it!! Well, I had to tell her when we left it was the best value for money brunch we'd had, complemented by the excellent customer service. Thank you Poppy#s Cafe, you made a lovely day, even lovelier. xx

Don’t think about resting your weary bottom on the seats outside this cafe or the grumpy owner will rush out and tell you to either order something or naff off

Came here for coffee whilst visiting the art exhibition near by at The Butcher's Hall. Friendly service and lovely coffee. Very convenient for visiting Tavistock market.

Good food and service. We enjoyed our lunch here. The sandwiches and toasties were particularly nice, and we liked sitting outside on the picnic tables.

Stopped by for lunch as not visited for a while. Fantastic regular breakfast, cooked to my liking and delicious local ingredients from the butcher next door - no food miles here! Meal came quickly with friendly service. Even made the tea to my request. Very reasonable in price compared to other cafes in town.

Initial experience was good as a young lady greeted us with a smile and menus. We initially chose to sit outside although with the May sun it was very hot and asked whether there were umbrellas (part of a garden umbrella already visible at the table). We were told they were still in storage. A lengthy wait for our food (more than 30 mins) in a period that is yet considered full season. I noted that we were not the only group concerned by their wait time for food. As it was too hot we decided to go inside where it was cooler although tables were crowded together so little space to sit or move around. As we sat down and just behind the counter at the back we noted the umbrellas that we told were in storage! When our food arrived, my mother’s toasted sandwich (Brie, Bacon and Cranberry) was clearly not a properly toasted (cooked bacon and Brie between two slices of toast!), unlike my aunt’s which had seen a toastie machine. Again when we politely made a comment, our waitress (not the young lady that greeted us) went to the kitchen but then never came back with any feedback. Shame as this place is in such a lovely setting and in the general the food is good yet a slightly better focus on customer service and I would not be seeing the need to write this poor review.

We enjoyed our stop here...lovely toasties with crisps and beautiful cut and freshest side 🥗 salad....and Cheese scones...Waitress had a lovely personality too...as well as looking immaculate...So kind and accommodating to customers with a wheelchair...Well done everyone 😀 😊 😄

Enjoyable lunch and friendly staff.

Arrived at lunchtime so you would expect them to be busy, but only half the tables were occupied. Nevertheless, service was slow. I didn't time it, but it seemed to take a long time for anything to arrive. When it came, it was good - I suspect we may have fallen into the gap between breakfast and lunch

Had a great omelets and salad lunch at Poppys cafe..on far side of the pannier market so a bit quieter than some other places. Suited me. Pleasant quick service and everything very clean. Thankyou!

We wrote a review here a couple of months ago which we were alerted was deleted😳 didn't have the nicest experience. Food was lovely as were most staff except for one young lady serving us was rude to my partner who rolled her eyes when he asked for a surviette and made us feel as if we were burdenning. Please take all reviews on board constructively rather than deleting them.🙃

Visited with friends for a coffee and toasted tea cake. Extremely attentive staff, my wife suffered from a sudden coughing fit and one of the staff brought over a glass of water without us having to ask. Have been before and will definitely visit again 👍

What a treasure this place is , set just off of Tavistock Market, with a menu of simple food cooked really well using local produce where possible and very reasonably priced, very welcoming as well.

Would be 5 stars if based on the food alone as the food was amazing. Some weird rule with signs everywhere saying you can’t sit down at a table if it hasn’t been cleared yet, which means you wait patiently for a table (after being barked at by staff not to dare sit down) and then someone else takes the table and you must wait again. Edit: checked my credit card statement, definitely yours. The signs are on the outside tables with the cutlery, was served by a lady wearing pink doc martins.

A popular basic style cafe that serves nice food. Popular no doubt because people like this place and the food is very reasonably priced. Key to this place is that the business sources some of its ingredients from local butchers. This contributes to the local economy. So a mug of tea and an english breakfast. The sausage and bacon stand out. Quality. The other ingredients, hash brown with a nice crunch to it - all too often not this good. Baked beans - perfectly edible but to my taste not quite there. Toast fine. Tea as expected nice. Service - staff working politely and hard as a team supporting one another to clear tables inside and outside to efficiently get tasks done. Polite at all times. Busy time of day but order time to food served was reasonable in the circumstances. I have walked past this cafe on many occasions visiting Tavistock and not gone in. Would i go in again - definately for the reasons, polite staff, value for money, local sourcing of products. This place is dog friendly for outside tables.

The food was lovely, and came in good time. Only real issue was that we had a blonde young lady serving us who was very rude in her tone of approach, scowled and eye rolled at us both during service and from a distance. The rest of the staff were lovely though. Definitely go for some lovely affordable food but felt quite uncomfortable with our server. As my partner and I are 22 and have both been in the service industry for many years, we don't often write reviews but felt this needed attention.

Lovely cafe offering a selection of cold and hot drinks as well as food. There is a minimum spend of £5 for card orders which is understandable. Indoor and outdoor seating as well as takeaway service means all angles are covered. The mocha I had was very good.

We were paying an early morning visit to Tavistock and we’re going for Breakfast. Trip Advisor gave us a few options, but Poppy’s Cafe seemed to stand out and so we paid them a visit. Reasonable Menu and the place was clean, although social distancing not their strong point. Friendly enough staff as well. Food chosen was the Omelette option with Hash Browns and Beans. Food was ok but I’ve certainly had much better Omelettes.

My favourite place to eat in Tavistock! Went in for lunch today with my boyfriend, who thoroughly enjoyed his large breakfast. Best lasagne I’ve had in a long time! As always, such lovely staff, amazing portions and a talented chef, that’s for sure! Would highly recommend to anyone and everyone!!

Refreshingly simple yet wonderfully tasty salad. Fresh crisp lettuce leaves, shavings of parmesan, caesarea dressing and possibly the best croutons I've ever had...all topped off with a perfectly cooked chicken breast.

Excellent food. Family of 5 adults on a busy, sunny bank holiday (yes they do exist), we had all day breakfasts, burgers and panini's. Food was faultless, the staff polite and friendly, even brought treats out for the dog. Would highly recommend.

As I trade in Tavistock Market regularly, I tend to have food here most of all. It is lovely food and not over priced. You get a good plateful and the staff are cheerful. Cannot wait to eat here again when lockdown lifts.😊

We visited this café, for breakfast. We were seated very quickly, and Our order taken. We both decided on the small full cooked breakfast. The menu, made out, that the sausages, were made locally and were something special. Howells sausage? How disappointed we were with the breakfast arrived, the fried egg was so overdone and hard, Well the tomato, we have no idea how it managed to get in that state. The hash brown was very pale and undercooked, the bacon was very tasty, well as for the sausage, that was something else! It was obviously cash-and-carries cheapest, Thinest Deep fry sausage they could get, It may have tasted better had it been deep-fried, but as the menu stated it was grilled. I am so glad I did not order the extra large breakfast! As there would’ve been two of each item. Sadly, would not return, and as the Café was so small, I did not complain, we simply pay the bill and left, a real shame.

Popped in for a coffee first, great they actually do old style milky coffee. You can get one of the modern style coffee but hurray to a place that still does old style. Went back for lunch later, both choices were excellent, popular with locals and visitors from what we could see.

Visited for breakfast. Locally sourced food for some menu items. Decent food at a decent price. Service good and prompt. One small downside for me. Mediocre tomato sauce. But like the fact the sachets are opened at service avoiding getting the sachets apart.

As we said in our review back in Feb 2017, Poppy's is Absolutely First Class and it is clearly maintaining that standard. We have enjoyed meals here many times. Thanks for looking after us with a couple of lovely meals after 2pm when your Traditional menu had actually closed. We eat out every Saturday somewhere in Devon and Poppy's is by far our favourite. Both the standard of food and the service given is way above that of others. Many Thanks.

It's not flash, but the welcome is friendly, the service is good and the food is home cooking you want to eat. It's right next to the indoor market in Tavistock. We will definitely be going there again the next time we visit, the food portions are good the price is right and not expensive. The service is efficient and we had no complaints. Just be aware it does fill up quick at lunchtime, which says a lot in my book. At the end of the day it's a good cafe to eat in, so give it a go.

This is a very friendy cafe with a good selection of food ranging from cakes & buns to a main meal. The home made soup is superb served wih crusty bread & plenty of butter. Just the thing on a cold day

We recently moved to the area and are just finding our feet … three of us called into the lovely old indoor market in Tavistock and after a while we felt the need for coffee... this was when we saw Poppies café just outside the market building . We ordered our drinks and decided that we could manage a sandwich to go with it … but, I'm a sucker for a "full English" so the order was placed … two bacon sarnies and a full English for me ! The breakfast arrived promptly and was served up on a hot plate just as I like … really really nice breakfast. Proper bacon on the sarnies too! Just a couple of comments though... none of them bad .. when I placed the order I specified no Hash browns mainly because I wasn't overly hungry but also because I don't think that they go well with a breakfast and I rarely eat them , but that's just me … wife says I'm awkward ! WHAT ! When the breakfast was brought to the table the lovely lady said that they had given me an extra fried egg and an "extra sausage" to compensate for the Hash browns … Now wasn't that a lovely gesture ? I was impressed. …. but as I just stated I wasn't overly hungry more err... erm … greedy ! … I struggled to eat everything but I managed as it was lovely .. phew ! … the second comment was that there was toast with the breakfast but it had been buttered when still hot, one of my pet hate's as I prefer the butter on when cold … now the wife is saying that I'm turning into Victor Meldrew !! ... … annnnnd, the third and final comment/preference would be "please could I have a ketchup bottle" and not those sachet things that wind me up … yea yea I know they are more hygienic than the bottle but … but … Anyhow, I will be back to visit Poppies again (if you will have me) for another fabulous breakfast and I would recommend that everyone pays you a visit . Keep up the good work !

Found it by chance tucked away alongside the market. The staff we’re super friendly and the food was really good at a great price.

Had this little cafe recommended by a friend so thought we would give it a try. The staff here know how to look after their customers and are very accomodating. The selection of food from the menu is good and all fod is prepared fresh and delivered piping hot to your table. Will be returning on our next visit to Tavistock.

We went to Poppy's for the first time in August for lunch. It was very worthwhile and inexpensive. Service was excellent. Can recommend it.

I have now been to Poppy's twice with my parents for lunch. The quality of the products and menu choice are excellent. The food was presented well with with a nice fresh garnish. I had a granary baguette with brie and bacon which was delicious. Fantastic service and great value for money. Will be back again very soon. I live locally in Plymouth.

Visited Tavistock on a rainy Saturday! Tavistock is beautiful so much history and architecture to enjoy. We walked around looking for somewhere to have lunch, everywhere was serving burgers, and fried food, so lovely to find somewhere cooking fresh vegetables! My husband had the lambs liver and I had the roast pork. The vegetables were cooked perfectly, still crunchy! Friendly staff and clean. Defiantly would recommend. Thank you.
