My wife and I were in Okehampton for a couple of days and fancied a big breakfast before starting off for hone. We found the cafe on google maps and gave it a try. The breakfast was very good and there was lots of choice. The cafe is quite small with 5 tables for 4 and 1 for 2 people. It’s laid out in the style of an American diner. It looks like it’s run by two ladies, one in the kitchen and one serving, so when it’s busy things can take a bit longer, but it’s worth the wait. The waitress was very helpful and accommodating moving us to another table when the sun was shining in our eyes. The cafe was very clean and fresh with the tables and chairs disinfected after each customer. I would recommend giving the cafe a try.

Me and my wife went to J-Street Cafe (as we call it) today for lunch after it has been closed for a while due to covid. We both had the chicago Chicken and Bacon baguette and were both blown away by it! The chicken was juicy and tasty, the bacon was crispy and delicious and the bread was both soft and crunchy (but not so crunchy as to cut your mouth up - just perfect) It was £6 each for the meals and we left very very satisfied.

What a great place, food was sooo nice, we had steak baguette, salad and chips, really tasty, loads of it and just under £8.00. Service was great, nice and friendly. Nice atmosphere with the 60s music. Definitely worth a visit.

Waited over half an hour for two hot dogs a cheese toasty, scampi and an omelette. Three tables got their order in just before us. So be warned if you are in a hurry. Other than that, the food was as expected for a diner.

We came across this on a snowy day in Okehampton. On entering you do step into a true American diner with a jukebox to boot. The food is very reasonably priced and of a very good standard. In particular the breakfast is very well cooked and hot! Also the latte was as good as the main high street brands. This is off the man shopping area but well worth visiting.

This diner was recommended to us by some town residents. The bacon was the best I have tasted in years and the sausages had a lovely taste, the egg was cooked exactly as I like them, runny but not snotty! Friendly service and good clean decor. In my opinion the All Day Breakfast here is better value and definitely better flavours than the well known "brand" pub on the main street. We often pass this town, so will be going back to have a milkshake and try the waffles. I will recommend this diner to everybody.

the interior could do with a refresh, but the retro American diner concept is is fun! I've been a few time for breakfast and once for a burger. All meals were good! at the risk of sounding rude I was really pleasantly surprised how good it was.

Regrettably we have to agree with some of the other reviewers on here that the milkshake is very poor - especially the millionaire milkshake. Does have a Nesquick vibe to it, not really ice cream as advertised. Chips were nice. And the cheese dog was good too - also a lot of it. We had the club sandwich as well and that was pretty good. Not much for the salad though. Overall it’s nice decor, very friendly service, food was good but lacklustre milkshake - think we speak for a lot of reviewers on here if the poor milkshake can be addressed.

Food was good, proper burgers not cheap patties, friendly staff , good kids menu, large selection.. Kids liked the large selection of unusual milkshakes .. is small so not wheelchair friendly & toilet up stairs but apart from that all good x

Since when was £3.25 an acceptable price for Nesquick milkshake and an Oreo? If you advertise an Oreo milkshake, especially at that price, I expect to receive something with Oeros IN the milkshake. A place toting itself as an American Diner should be embarrassed to serve such poor quality milkshakes. You can get nicer milkshake for £1 in any supermarket or shop.

While walking around oakhampton we stumbled across this diner, we popped in for a bite to eat, on entry the establishment was a bit smelly, and there was some things stuck to the wall loosely resembling American life. While this place is trying to be a American diner, but it is failing miserably, the menu has a good choice, burgers and other sundries, but the good old British fry up is something you don't normally see in a American diner. My friend had the fry up, it wasn't all that, lots of burnt crumbs everywhere, eggs looked liked they've been on the floor, just look wrong. Luckily I had the tuna salad, no cooking involved, cheap tinned tuna on some lettuce. Bit pricey for what it was. We won't be returning, it just needs a identity, English cafe or American diner, in my opinion the 2 mix.

Friendly enough staff but poor quality food. Literally everything was fried. My omlette contained a bucket of oil soaked ingredients. Others had bland burgers - fried naturally. We all felt slightly sick for the whole afternoon with a taste of grease in our mouths. And expensive too. Just get a sandwich from Waitrose instead.

There is some parking outside and in the side streets. I wish we lived nearer and would go often. Great for just about any budget and child friendly. Ten stars!

I hesitated about coming in this diner the first time as it's pretty small and I thought it would be crowded and slow. But it looked fun so I gave it a try. I was rewarded with generously portioned breakfast served by a friendly and hard working staff who were courteous enough to remember me a few days later on a return visit.Eggs were perfectly cooked and coffee well made. The staff were rushed off their feet but still managed to be attentive and calm. The menu is American diner style and despite the small premises they pull it off. Even the small staircase to the loo manages to be quaint rather than cramped.Worth a visit for a hearty, interesting breakfast, but alllow a good amount of time for home cooking.

Great american style diner which was so cheap! I had a 5 item breakfast for £2.50, which was plenty big enough, my girls enjoyed their pancakes with maple syrup and my husband's breakfast was huge, and included a drink in the price. The staff were great and the service efficient. The place was packed and we could see why.

I like coming to the J Street for a quick burger or shake. It is normally popular with the younger crowd - so be prepared for teenagers! The staff work hard to make sure your visit is as a agreeable as possible and are always lovely. They will even let you bring your dog in if it's the type to sit quietly under the table without fuss. Come hungry as the portions are quite big!

I love the decor - a little piece of America in Okehampton - and the food!!The burger meals are proper American style ones, a good size burger on a plate with chips and salad pieces. Came across this place in Okehampton after a long walk. You can't miss it as it has a massive cafe sign painted on the wall. Inside is decorated in the style of an American diner. Food is very tasty at a decent price. Lookout for the entrance as it looks like a normal door to a house.

The decor in this place is great, really interesting to look at whilst waiting for food or drinking tea, there's lots of posters of American icons and 60s culture. We arrived to find the cafe very full. We were shown to a table and the lady apologised that they were a bit swamped but would get to us as soon as possible. Well we had quite a long wait for our order to be taken and then a long wait for the food to arrive. When it did arrive it was very average, the omelette was tasty but the fry ups were nothing special. Cost about £20 for three breakfasts and drinks so a bit steep. Most memorable for the long wait!

This is the little cafe I head for when I need a mid morning breakfast ...or a cheap lunch!Jan cooks everything to order so service can be slow at busy times. But the staff are always so lovely and the food is basic but beautifully cooked and presented. Great place for cyclists to refuel, families to have a homecooked meal out and shoppers to pop in for coffee and a snack. The decor is 50's US Diner, so very nostalgic for some of us!

This is a cafe which has made an effort to be a little different with a 1950's American theme. The prices are modest and service is friendly and helpful. It's a little small inside with limited seating, and no outside seating. The menu is extensive and they make some very good milkshakes which I can thoroughly recommend, if you are not on a diet! They "tick all the boxes" and I don't think that they disappoint in any way.

My husband and son had visited the cafe before so I thought I would give it a try. The all female floor staff looked like they were having the worst day ever! Definitely not the cheery all American atmosphere I expected. We waited well over half an hour for our food and whilst waiting saw others who came in after us served first! Extremely frustrating! Once the food arrived it was tasty. No apology for the wait though. Don't think I will be returning.

I've been to J Street Diner on a number of occasions since 2008, more frequently while I was studying at Okehampton College, however, its still one of my favorite places to return to for lunch if I'm meeting friends in the town. For a small establishment, the diner offers an extensive menu, from fried breakfasts, nachos and spaghetti bolagnaise, not to mention a 'specials' board. In terms of drinks and desserts, there is a large variety of coffees, milkshakes and ice cream sundaes available: there's definitely something for everyone at J Street Diner! The portions are very generous and represent great value for money. The service is always efficient, the staff bubbly, and the seating area is always kept clean and tidy. If you're looking to lunch with friends, I would recommend arriving in good time in order to avoid disappointment as the seating area is quite small but always in demand!

Visited here with a couple of friends and I was a bit taken aback at first about how small it was! Fortunately the guy who served us was able to push a couple of small tables together and to be honest it didn't feel cramped at all.Food was really good, I had a lovely veggie burger with mushrooms and onions rings. My only complaint would be that the fries were pretty much like standard McDonald's fries, maybe they could spice them up a bit or something.Managed to have a Coke float though, not enough places offer these! The other meals looked good too and it's obvious things were being cooked from fresh.Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!

Been to this place quite a few times and my title is the reason behind this. If you are looking for a quick fix this is a great place to go, I agree with a past review that the seating is perhaps cramped however the food is great value and exactly what you would expect from a American style diner with good 60s decor. I would recommend the big all day breakfast at £5.99 including a hot drink you can't go wrong!

Highly recommend this traditional family run pub. The Landlady is the hardest working person I have ever met and always with a smile on her face. She made us so welcome as did the locals. Lots of locals (good sign) and excellent menu. Not too fussy - just good traditional pub food. I had the sausages & mash with onion gravy with freshly cooked vegetables. Great desserts. We stayed overnight on a Devon Coast to Coast bike ride. My room in the main building was clean, fresh sheets and a bath!!! Essential on a bike riding trip! Views from the pub are stunning when the sun is shining. There is a caravan park out the back. There is cottage accommodation as well which is basic. I encourage you to visit and support them.
