Food was excellent, lovely formal setting, but not snobby! Free parking for diners. We all had different meals, I had a pie which was lovely, as was the other food. The staff were very attentive and a credit to the hotel.

We've been a fan of this place for a couple of years, but on our last visit 1/6/2024, we were so disappointed. The food was very average, the service surprisingly poor and it had lost its sparkle. We noticed some regular members of staff did not seem to be about and the staff on duty seemed confused with orders and what was included. The food was cold and the attention to detail had gone. This is a shame.

Eaten there for Sunday lunch before and had an enjoyable experience however this time we were disappointed. The starter was calamari and was delicious. The roast sirloin was a bit tough. I had roast lamb and I couldn’t even cut it. I sent it back and declined another meal. Such a shame as the staff were good and the hotel lovely

On arrival I went to park my vehicle in the car park however the spaces are very small and not loads of room to get around. The room itself was clean and tidy room, with a nice size desk to do work on. The bathroom is a little cramped and the shower was not very powerful. However, my all in all experience was good and would stay again. The food was great too.

We are down visiting family in Plymouth and having had a successful gluten free visit here last year we went back. Soup and sandwiches in the bar area..dog friendly if that matters to anyone. Good awareness, particularly from one of the lovely ladies behind the bar and even though the sandwiches menu didn’t say the smoked salmon bagel could be adapted she heard me talking to the barman and said as long as I was happy with gf bread rather than a bagel it was fine. The butternut squash soup was fantastic and came with a hot gf roll and no croutons. We are planning to take my 90 year old mum in law on Friday for a cream tea, and if I phone Thursday when it’s definite they’ll make sure there’s a gf scone too. There’s a car park, and a lift for wheelchair access, but the riverside car park is just a few minutes away if it’s full.

Although as residents at the Bedford Hotel, we chose to eat in. (We were not on the DB&B deal) There is a fabulous choice on the menu, albeit the same for lunch as it is for dinner, nevertheless the choice is phenomenal, and suited the both of us very well. The portions are very generous so my advice would be, whilst as I said the choice is very tempting (tasters, starters, mains whatever) just remember the portions are very generous! But no complaints what so ever, and the service is exemplary

Visiting the Christmas market 4 of us decided to have lunch at the Bedford. Several years since our last visit - still quite dated and old fashioned but busy. Very disappointed with the limited menu which had only one vegetarian option - jackfruit curry! Very strange combinations - traditional Ploughman's and chicken burger both with onion bhaji? Don't think so! Hake with pakchoi? Not one starter appealed to any of us so went straight for the main dishes. 3 chose the fish and chips which were okay and quite large portions. I chose the ham, egg and chips. Well, I don't even know where to begin! A portion of chips served separately and a plate half covered with watercress. A rectangular shape covered in a liquid cream coloured sauce. Where was the ham? The poached egg? Absolutely disgusting! The waitress told me it was 'pressed ham' but it was just a mess of what looked like shredded pink meat soaked in the sauce. the egg was on the top also covered in this sauce? I did try a few mouthfuls but it was so salty and so soggy I left the rest. We didn't bother with desserts and won't be returning. Read less

The food was excellent, beautifully presented and expertly served by Grace, together with Vicky. We both had the soup, absolutely delicious, served with hot rolls straight from the oven. I then chose the Waldorf salad, again, perfect for me, and my husband had the Ploughman’s. It was enormous, with thick slices of both chicken and ham, - you name it, it was there. A really fabulous spread. He followed that (!) with treacle tart and clotted cream, and I chose one scoop of ice cream, served with rest berries, for decoration. It was a wonderful birthday experience, and I would like to thank all those concerned, especially Grace for looking after us so well….a big very thank you.

We had the ploughmans lunch which was great as it was a super hot day. The young waitress went the extra mile - we wish we had got her name and we couldn't find her to leave her a tip. Quality of the produce was excellent. It would have been nice to have had e a piece of granary bread rather than rolls but just a minor point. Good value and we will, be back to try the curry!

On holiday in Tavistock and, having read that the Bedford Hotel was the home of the Devon cream tea, we just had to try one for ourselves. Surely, if anywhere knew how to serve a cream tea, it would be this place...?! The outside of the building looked very pretty, so we were prepared for a treat. The scones did not disappoint - they were very light and delicious. Hogs bottom strawberry jam was also lovely and the cream plentiful. So the cream tea was good and lived up to expectations...Unfortunately our tea and coffee was served without cups, which took another 5 minutes to arrive, and the table was (very) dirty - we actually cleaned it ourselves with wet wipes and a tissue because we couldn't find any staff to ask to do it for us. The artwork in the hotel was lovely, but the decor in general seemed very tired and jaded. The carpet was grubby and stained, and littered with crumbs.Overall: the food was excellent, but the surroundings let you down. Tired and jaded could be construed as old-world and charming - but only if it is clean. The overall feeling was just grubby and I wouldn't bother to go back...

Very Disappointing. The building is beautiful. However, we had breakfast which was priced at £14 pp - that's ok we know you have to pay for 'nice' these days. The toast arrived - and was told they had 'run out of marmalade!' This being a Saturday morning, with a wonderful fresh market within walking distance! The staff was slow, to say the least - the scrambled eggs on toast arrived cold - but as I never saw a member of staff after the breakfast was served, I couldn't tell anyone! The main breakfast was overcooked and placed on a heap in the center of the plate - looked an awful mess and not appetizing at all! I would go for coffee but will be a long time before I eat there again. Very sad!!!

Food and drinks at the bar can no longer be placed on a tab. On my last visit I had to make four separate payments for drinks, food and coffee. While this is not the end of the world the management could authorise the swiping of a card or alternatively keep a card behind the bar. Apparently they claim to have had several occasions prior to Christmas where patrons walked out without paying. Why does the management insist on penalising the majority for the poor behaviour of the minority?Such a shame.

Despite having booked our Afternoon Tea in advance, arriving at the time specified by the Hotel, and the room being quiet, our meal was somewhat chaotic. Our tea and coffee was slow to be served, but even so it arrived a very long way in advance of the food: by the time the food was served our drinks were cold. Despite mentioning this, we weren't offered more. The food was pleasant, but we felt the balance between sweet and savoury was too heavily skewed in favour of the sweet. We would have preferred a few more sandwiches and a few less cakes, of which there were really too many (in addition to a cream tea). We're sad to say that we probably won't repeat the experience: we've had better Afternoon Teas elsewhere.

It didn't have an auspicious start . . . We had a table booked for four people for lunch but our table only had three chairs. Two waitresses watched as one of our group, all in our later years, fetched a chair from a nearby table. We were given menus and placed a drinks order. These days we are used to staff saying "No worries" but it was good to know that asking for drinks wasn't a problem. About fifteen minutes later a different waitress came for our food order. Again, "No worries". She also asked if we'd like to order drinks. We explained that we already had and as a result they arrived a few minutes later. The food was good. All four of us enjoyed our meals but, it has to be said, they were a bit lukewarm. That was a shame because, as I said, the food itself was good. Would we like desserts? We would. There was a bit of a wait for these too but it was punctuated by the waitress dropping four spoons and four forks in a pile on the table with a terse "There you go". No napkins though. A summary - good food but it needed to be hotter. Indifferent, even brusque, unhelpful service. So, there you go - no worries!

We were a party of 70 for lunch. The function room was delightfully light and airy; formerly obviously a courtyard, now covered in with a very modern roof. The modern and very colourful artwork in the room was strikingly attractive. We had pre-ordered everything. It took a long time to provide non-alcoholic drinks for our guests. Those eating roast beef were served first and many of us were almost finished before those who had chosen salmon were served. My roast beef was excellent, with plenty of gravy, delicious big Yorkshire pudding and a variety of vegetables; an excellent roast. Subsequently I learnt some beef had been so touch steak knives had been requested, and one person commented on lump of gristle. However the sticky toffee pudding was the best I have ever tasted! The cheese section looked good too; some got grapes and others didn't. The staff were lovely and had a tough job bringing out the main course. One extra server might have meant that we might all have enjoyed our main course together.

We visited the Bedford Hotel for dinner around 6pm on a Monday evening. The hotel itself is very grand and absolutely gorgeous, the inside matches the outside beautifully with chandeliers and old-fashioned sofas and carpeting throughout. When we arrived, we ordered a drink from the bar and sat in the small lounge area until our table was ready. The restaurant area that we sat in was somewhat disappointing, it was still beautiful but with the big, grandness of the hotel itself the restaurant area is small and secluded. Unfortunately, it is also right next to the road, so though it was a gorgeous sunny day and the window by our table had been opened to let in the warm air, the cars zooming past on the road were so loud we had to shut it.

The food is really very fine and kindly served. Ours was a reunion with friends, and the choice of venue met the mark (other than a very noisy bunch of middle aged golfers celebrating we knew not what but doubt they made their tee times the next morning). We were treated to the Duchess of Bedford Afternoon Tea and very nice it was too. Nice and friendly staff , who also allowed me to have pint (I don't like tea of coffee) with the rather nice selection of yummy food. Not the best I've ever had , that belongs to Bovey Castle , but it was literally half the price and was easily far better value for money. Sandwiches were good (I'd have liked twice as much - but then I'm a pig...) but the cakes and scones were really good. Bearing in mind the price my only slight criticism was not enough jam for the two of us - it only covered 3 of the resulting 4 half scones to our satisfaction. I'm sure if I'd asked we could have had more but couldn't honestly be bothered. Atmosphere was nice ( the wedding party not intrusive to other guests. Nice place with (slightly faded air of ) elegance

The Bedford Hotel offers a spacious, comfortable area for a light lunch, which was thoroughly enjoyable after a look round Tavistock museum, a walk between the old Abbey walls and the river and a look around the Pannier Market... every town should have one of these, it is delightful. Tavistock is a clean town, which is unfortunately carved up by fairly heavy traffic, although the bus station was well laid out and spacious. It was largely re-planned by the Russell family, the Dukes of Bedford, who were philanthropic in their aims and bought the vast lands belonging to the abbey from the crown. Hence the main hotel is called the Bedford Hotel. There is a find oil painting of Sir Walter Raleigh doffing his cloak for Elizabeth lst to step on. Raleigh was a local lad, as was Sir Francis Drake, whose statue is found on one of the main roads.

OK - this may be the oldest hotel in Tavistock but it really isn't a good plan to rest on one's laurels and assume that your customers will automatically think it's a great place. Twice we have been there in expectation of their apparently celebrated cream tea but just try getting the staffs' attention. On the second occasion we were told that the cream tea menu wasn't available for another 10 minutes. Tosh!! Came here for lunch whilst in Tavistock to see the Iron man search engine. A very busy restaurant due to the number in the town because of this display on the day. Luckily we had booked a table which awaited us. They have a very good menu where you could have a snack, sandwiches or a complete meal. But was surprised to see they didn't do a set 2 or 3 course meal, which most places do these days. We choose a meal and later a sweet, both very nice. Despite it being very busy we were served promptly by the young staff. Have been before for a snack and will certainly go back when in the town. Plenty to see in Tavistock, but unfortunately the main market is closed for renovation, but they do have a smaller market behind with plenty of stalls.

Decided to pop into the Bedford today for lunch. Husband had a mozzarella & pesto panini and was happy enough with that. My daughter & I decided we'd have a cream tea. Service was quick and before we knew it our scones had arrived. Two big scones but you share a small pot of clotted cream & pot of jam. The jam was nice but the scones & cream were not. Scones were very dry and the consistency of the clotted cream was unlike any I've been served before. It was so thin and runny, think pouring consistency. It was impossible to put more than a very thin layer on which is just as well as there wasn't much cream. Consequently we left more than half. Pleasant staff & atmosphere but we won't try here again.

Meeting up with old friends we searched for somewhere we could eat while at the same time they could bring their dogs. True we didn’t eat In the The restaurant but we could eat in the bar. An extensive menu plus specials suited everyone’s tastes. The bar staff were very friendly, the food swift to arrive and well cooked and presented. Slightly overpriced for a bar menu in my view but worth the money.

My father and I were regular patrons of this hotel, but on our most recent visits we were disappointed in both the quality of the food (already cold when it reached our table) and below quality service.

During a recent stay in north Devon, my wife and I ventured to Tavistock, with nothing planned except to look around. We found enough to do that we found ourselves hungry and stepped into the Bedford Hotel in the heart of town. We were shown through to the Woburn Restaurant which is lovely. We were blown away by the friendly and efficient service, as well as the excellent food. The presentation of our meals was beautiful

The building is beautiful and the staff very pleasant, attentative and helpful. Overall we had a great time. Having consulted the menu again, I do feel that maybe my selection wasn't quite correct, I actually had a brioche bun not nigella focaccia. The aubergine side dish wasn't smoky. It didn't state sweet potato chips but this was promptly changed for my choice. However, picky as this sounds, it didn't spoil our evening but wasn't the best vegetarian choice for me personally. I remember that I really don't like halloumi! it is very salty. would go again but avoid the above, purely on personal preference. The starter was divine

Three of us visited for Afternoon Tea and paid £14.00 each :)We felt it was great value and the food was divine, with plenty of it! We had smoked salmon sandwiches, parsnip crisps, fresh scones, jam and cream, macaroons, cakes and chocolate brownies just to name a few. It was also not a problem that one of us did not like tea or coffee and thus were offered a soft drink instead. Our only very minor niggle was that we mentioned when booking that it was a birthday and this seemed to be forgotten on the day. Luckily I'm quite shy (ha ha) so didn't really miss any birthday fuss but somebody else might have! Can't wait to return soon!

Visiting Tavistock and looking for somewhere to eat we decided on The Bedford. Started off in the bar but a very pleasant lady suggested we would be more comfortable in the restaurant. Service was very good with only a short wait for our food. Food was delicious and was very well presented. Prices were inline with what we would expect to pay at a lesser establishment.

We were really impressed. It looked really smart and we were a bit bedraggled on a wet day. The place has free parking which is a bonus. Inside it is well worth visiting just to walk around and see the great array of cosy and smart areas to sit and/or eat. It has a varied and impressive interior. The food was excellent - we went for the open sandwiches and they were outstanding! The service was quick and efficient too. We did not stay the night but I really recommend dropping in for a drink and a bite to eat. It is not cheap but worth it1

In the center of town, across from St. Eustachius, a block from the covered market .. this is clearly the place to stay in Tavistock (although we were in the Park at Bovey Castle). We noted the name as a recommendation or place to select next visit.

We chose the Bedford a bit at random to meet friends for lunch whilst holidaying in the area. We didn't book and it was pretty busy, but we were quickly shown to a table in the lounge area. The lunch menu and main menu were both available to choose from. There is a good range of choices, we opted for starters or sandwiches with desserts. The portions were of a good size, even for those in our party who just chose the starters. I had the open salmon sandwich which was delicious. Desserts were very nice too - the banana spilt certainly was different, not a smidgeon of squirts cream in sight. The only thing that loses the final star was the service, it was polite and friendly but really lacked an energetic buzz. Well worth a visit all in all.

The Bedford is a regular lunch spot on our annual visit to Tavistock. Close to Tavistock centre The Menu has been updated and the food is very good. Staff are friendly and courteous and the Chef is both imaginative and competent.

Its the best in Tavistock. Very traditional, rooms average, but rest of hotel is super. Staff could be a little more approachable.

Visited recently with my female friend for a lunch and catch up. We really felt it was lovely and would definitely return. I had the "The Bedford pork burger" with Asian braised belly pork and sweet potato fries. It was really nice and plentiful - very filling. Felt it was priced adequately and great quality. Service was good. Thanks again.

We chose to have Sunday Lunch at The Bedford Hotel whist on holiday in Tavistock. The restaurant was lovely and the staff extremely attentive. There was plenty of choice on the menu but the Roast Beef was really good. The three courses we chose were lovely and really excellent value.

£16 for 2 delicious courses. Food looked and tasted beautiful, almost to fine dining standard. My husband had the Hake with gnocchi and summer veg and was very pleased. We both had banana parfait for dessert which was fab. Being vegetarian I was excited at the prospect of polenta, heritage tomatoes and goats cheese and I was not disappointed by the flavours but I did think the portion size was mean. Since our waitress asked if everything was ok I mentioned it too her and she took the complaint up with first the chef and then the general manager. I received an extra helping (just as lovely as the first!) and I'm confident that subsequent diners won't have the same complaint. I'll be going back in a few weeks time for the next summer lunch menu.

Our lunch was expensive but stylish. We each ordered a vegetarian and gluten-free meal. It was good that these dietary needs were catered for, even though the choice was limited. The meal had more style than substance, unlike the generous meals that we experienced in country pubs at a much lower price. The restaurant was clean and attractive. Service was efficient.

We stayed here on a conference weekend package. On arrival we found there to be car park at the rear of the hotel (this turns out to be on Lower ground floor level). There is a lift (for wheelchairs and less able bodied) to take you to the Ground Floor & Reception. Otherwise, access to Reception is via stairs .The hotel is very old and therefore encumbered by certain characters arising from age.I requested a disabled room but was told it had been taken. Even though I told the hotel that I walked with 2 sticks and had difficulty with stairs, they did not offer me any of the adjacent 6 ground floor rooms but put me at the top of a flight of stairs. It was quite disappointing to then find other (able bodied) members at our conference were occupying those rooms!!! All those people said they felt awful that I'd not been given one of the ground floor rooms. The Staff appeared to be very young in many cases and certainly 'out of their' depth in areas of their work, ie waiting at tables in the restaurant, resolving problems, etc.The Waiting Staff appeared quite untidy in their uniform presentation. Indeed, some of the girls' skirts were so short, they were verging on inappropriate in the workplace.Indeed, I would suggest that a Manager may like to consider asking the female staff to wear trousers if they cannot buy skirts of a more appropriate length.Cleanliness is not the best in parts of the hotel. I went to read a magazine from my bedside cabinet, only to find on picking it up that my hand and fingers were covered in some sticky substance - Jam or something more sinister, who knows! It was also covered in clumps of human hairs to boot.At a published Room Rate of £130 per night, I would expect better than this.On the plus side, the hotel does have a beautiful garden which it was a pleasure to use during the sunny afternoon.

Whilst visiting relatives in Devon, we stayed at The Bedford two weekends in a row. Breakfast was our first experience of the restaurant, wich a great selection of cereals, pastries, juice, etc. and then a choice of cooked breakfast. The full Devon breakfast was excellent. We also had lunch there on one of the weekends. I had a lamb burger, which actually turned out to be a large chunk of lamb, which was difficult to eat and I didnt like the black bun that it came on.For dinner we decided to pick a couple of light bites as we were not that hungry. The Whitebait was outstanding, with easily enough for the two of us, and also the bread board with humous. The restaurant itself is very clean and the service was excellent. It is a very popular place so unless you are staying in the hotel, I would recommend booking, especially on a saturday night.

I honestly was not expecting food like we had at the Bedford hotel. My friend brought us here on good authority and pulling up to the place it had a certain charm to it. Inside via the car park the hotel could be described at dated but not in a necessarily derogatory sense. Red plush carpet, old pictures and paintings, old comfortable arm chairs which all had a warm charm to it. The lounge was full of elderly friends having tea & cake. Before moving through to the restaurant I grabbed a beer from the bar. Ale served properly with a sprinkler in the draft (as it should be!). Pint of Legend ale from the local brewery was bang on!Moved through to the restaurant which was of a similar decor to the rest of the hotel, and I guess I shouldn't judge a book by its cover but I was expecting standard British fare, nothing overly exciting but hearty and tasty all the same. My assumptions couldn't have been more wrong. The menu presented was one I would expect to see in a high calibre restaurant. The menu was awash with intriguing and enticing options, so much so that it took us all quite some time to choose.I went for the thyme roasted butternut squash salad with pistachio which was divine. Both my friends who had the goats cheese stated it was one of the best they had had.I felt almost guilty ordering the Falafel burger but it just really appealed to me. Onion ash brioche with beetroot slaw, beetroot hummus and an onion marmalade, all served with sweet potato chips. It was delicious! I did get some food envy when the homemade steak & ale pie arrived next to me. It was a proper pie and noticeably hand made. I was promised some but my friend polished off the lot! The corn fed chick breast with mushroom & tarragon sauce on a bed of garlic mash and steamed greens was also sumptuous. Venison haunch wellington....I didn't get to try any of that either as it disappeared!I declined dessert but the surprises kept on coming. The pannacotta with honeycomb and chocolate truffle was incredible!I honestly left lunch in state of mild shock. My expectations were unfathomably smashed and I was left reeling in wonder at simply one of the best lunches i've had in a long time. To The Bedford Hotel, Tavistock I doth my cap to you and you will be seeing my friends & I in the not too distant future!!

we met family here for lunch in the brasserie, the menu was surprising to say the least, everything is covered in sauces, and heavy, no real light options or fresh delights. The room is tired and has the feel of a retirement home! The staff are very nice, polite, attentive and ensured we got all we ordered, but the food was not great, someone had the Cornish ham - inedible, hidden with spinach, when uncovered it was fat and grissle. The Pie and burger were ok fair but nothing to write home about. Disapointing lunch, felt we could have got better in one of the many country pubs in the area and that the Bedford needs to modernise and freshen its menu. Central place for Coffee, but I wouldn't recommend for lunch.

Excellent quirky and full of character. Staff were busy with pre-Christmas events and socials, but were always happy to help. We took over one of the quieter corners to relax in after performing / attending a concert across the road. Excellent service in there as always. (Didn't eat this time - but the food is excellent as well!)

Highly recommend this traditional family run pub. The Landlady is the hardest working person I have ever met and always with a smile on her face. She made us so welcome as did the locals. Lots of locals (good sign) and excellent menu. Not too fussy - just good traditional pub food. I had the sausages & mash with onion gravy with freshly cooked vegetables. Great desserts. We stayed overnight on a Devon Coast to Coast bike ride. My room in the main building was clean, fresh sheets and a bath!!! Essential on a bike riding trip! Views from the pub are stunning when the sun is shining. There is a caravan park out the back. There is cottage accommodation as well which is basic. I encourage you to visit and support them.

We visited here whilst in the area for a few days unfortunately we found the White Hart Inn not until our last evening and we wished we found it on our first. The staff were very welcoming and friendly we felt most welcome it kind of made our trip being here. The food was superb and we could not believe the devon prices so reasonable sort it out cornwall! Easy double the price back home half the taste. Plenty of parking, dog friendly, will leave with change. We speak often of going back

Expecting to have a lovely cooked breakfast in the restaurant to start our day only to be told restaurant not open due to no staff. Take away only Had 2 baps and 2 coffees £18 very disappointed the baps were small brioche buns. Won’t be returning..
