I am really struggling to understand Why does this place has such good reviews? Yes the views are wonderful and the scones are nice but really!!! I visited here many years ago. It was waitress service with china cups and proper cutlery. Today we were herded in a very confusing queue after a self serve buffet. The plates and cups were paper, the cutlery was a cheap wooden affair and it was expensive. My memories were of fabulous views (still there) with a quintessential English tea feel with charm and elegance. What we got was very far removed, no charm, no magic. I feel the National Trust has really lost its way. What worries me more is that people think it's great to have this bland, charmless experience!!! Sorry!! Great place, fantastic castle, abhorrent cafe experience.

We don’t use this cafe often because the service is always painfully slow. This morning it was quiet so my husband chose the sausages in a roll. For almost £5 there were three small halves of sausage in it. Pitiful. Really poor vfm. Staff were all busy at the counter so couldn’t feedback in person. Despite shopping at Waitrose weekly I’m not sure we’ll bother using the cafe again.

Booked the Lugger Inn for Sunday carvery. From the first minute staff were friendly and helpful. Was shown to the carvery within 5 minutes. There was 4 choices of meats and lots of choice of vegetables. Which was all excellent. Price was also very good at £14.95. Was advised you can go up as many times as you want , but 1 plate full was more than enough. Would highly recommend.

Oh dear. What should be a lovely old characterful pub is clearly struggling under the current management. We arrived for a drink at 12.20 pm on a Sunday after a wet coastal walk, to find the door bolted but the lights on. The member of staff inside signalled that the pub wasn’t opened until the manager returned. This he did a few minutes later with a bag of logs and proceeded to light the fire and then left 5 minutes later, leaving his assistant in charge. The lad left behind sat on a bar stool yawning and was too young to serve a second pint. He was unsure whether or not food was being served for Sunday lunch. We were the only people inside, the bar area was dirty, the windows were dirty, the loos were filthy with overflowing bins; the whole place was sad and depressing. Let’s hope that new management with energy and enthusiasm can take over the pub and save this beautiful old pub from being closed permanently as it has so much potential, even in today’s tricky market.

One of the worst English breakfast that I have ever had. The fried eggs were rock hard on all three plates so consistant, and when my wife cut her egg in half oil ran out and smelt bad. The beans and bacon was cold . 2 young waitresses more concerned with playing with their phones then clearing up or serving anyone.

My daughter and I booked dinner at The Olive Tree Restaurant in The Durrant House Hotel in Bideford. When we arrived the restaurant was very busy and our table was in the bar instead, which suited us both better to be honest. We were served by John-Paul for the whole time we were there and he was so friendly and helpful and we cannot speak highly enough about him. Nothing was too much trouble and he kept us informed about each course while we were there. We both ate from the Specials Menu which was dinner and dessert for £14.50. Our roast dinners were delicious and so were our puddings. We had a great time and will definitely be booking again very soon.

Such a nice and friendly cafe. The breakfast was tasty and cooked to perfection. Ate breakfast here twice during our holiday stay because it's nicer to support a local independent than the hungry horse. The food is tastier too. Also friendly staff and they provide veggie sausages which is always a bonus to me and nice to see! Affordable and in a prime location with a great view. Would be nice to come again if possible

This is a great store & café based on the outskirts of Ottery St Mary right next to the garden centre. The shop has lots of healthy options and local food, drink and crafts. There is good supply of fresh fruit & Veg, cheese, local eggs and a great selection of cakes & bread baked within store. After a god shop or look around head into the café for coffee & cake, sandwiches & their own quiches, they even do chips now! If visiting the garden centre or passing by on the A30 take a detour you will not be disappointed. Good food, good choice and great staff. We love it!

Ordered on self service till and changed fried egg to poached and black pudding. The only fresh were the egg and black pudding. Bacon had to dried to high heaven sausages are small. And what happened to the toast it’s tiny. Not a great breakfast and wasn’t even busy. No salt and had to look for the ketchup not a brilliant visit

History has disappeared! Visited a few years ago as we loved Band of Brothers, and there was a wealth of history on Easy Company, letters, photographs etc, but this has now been reduced to one small wall. We ordered drinks (man behind bar seemed grumpy at having to pour them!) and a plate of ‘artisanal flatbreads with hummus’ for the price of £7.50. When this was served I nearly fell off the pub bench as there were 5 small pancake looking things, and about a tablespoon of hummus (though it was v tasty). Can’t believe the price for what it was.
