The Longs Arms has been our ‘local’ for over thirty years and it’s now the best it’s ever been. The new team led superbly by Steve have really enhanced this grand old pub and restaurant. The service offered is excellent, professional but friendly and considerate, no ‘Have a nice day’ insincere corporate nonsense here. Our meal was absolutely superb, three of our party had a delicious meat pie, tender meat, crispy pastry and delicious fries. The salad was excellent with a generous mix of complementary ingredients, the cider-battered haddock had a perfect ratio of haddock to batter. The Cod mornay was incredible, a generous amount of succulent cod complemented by a delicious subtle topping, tasty vegetables and potato. All of our dishes were very well presented, delivered with a smile and arrived in perfect time. A visit to the Longs Arms is a must.

Went out to grab some time in a beer garden with a soft drink, sunshine and a couple of bowls of skinny, loaded fries. We headed for The Raven at Poulshot but unfortunately they had a private function on and so we remembered that the lovely Longs at Steeple Ashton serve the most amazing truffle and parmesan fries..... off we went, salivating with anticipation! Upon entering something was different. Bearing in mind that this is a notch up from your usual boozer and with prices that reflect this, the place was a little thin on the ground with customers. The tables that previously sparkled with glassware, didn't. Mmmm. I had entered the pub ahead of my husband as he had gone up the lane to park up. I was greeted with a smile and I asked if I could order food. I'm not sure, was the response. I will have to go and check. It was 1.45pm. Just some fries I quickly got in. Asking if they still did the parmesan and truffle skinny fries? No..... but we do parmesan fries, sort of cheesy chips, was the response. Disappointed on the inside but hot, oozy cheesy chips could be just as good, right? The girl came back, it was a yes, and so we ordered 2 bowls, a lemonade and a blackcurrant squash. Total, over £17.... gulp. We did get sunshine, we did get a beer garden, we did get a soft drink ( my glass was dirty ), but what came out next was NOT cheesy chips! Two small bowls of ordinary, lacklustre fries..... mmmm? My husband managed to attract the attention of the server. There was no cheese on the dry fries. She apologised and took them away. A few minutes later she reappeared with 2 bowls, of now, cold, fries. She mumbled something about the grater being small and so our cheese was small??.... cold fries grated with a dry, hard cheese was always only ever going to be cold fries with a cold, hard, dry cheese grated over the top!!!! My husband had the bonus of a large piece of ungrated rind in with his too! No replacement fries, no oozy, stringy, melty cheese, just the same fries walked back to the kitchen and then walked back to us. Gobsmacked! At over £17 I don't think I have ever felt so done over..... We frequent alot of restaurants and good pubs. The Pear Tree at Whitley, Rosemary and seasalt fries £4.65. Winchester Old Lyeburns and truffle mayonnaise fries £5,25. The Seven Tuns at Chedworth, truffle and parmesan fries £6, dirty fries with pulled short rib £7. Each of these serves a homemade and delicious mayo/ aioli at no extra charge. What did we pay? £7.50 a small bowl!!!!! £15..... and I had to go and find a menu to find this out and only after I had been completely mugged! To add insult to injury, in an attempt to liven up this pitiful offering, I opened a squeezy bottle of mayo to find a white, curly dog/cat hair on the nozzle..... dry chips it is then!!! This once super pub is no more. Overpriced, not a patch on what it was. Where are the lovely team that used to serve us and converse with us? The great chefs that took great pride in their food? We sat close to someone in chef's whites outside, cigarette in hand.... not good and we won't be back.

This place used to be a firm favorite but sadly no longer. Went for a roast but the standards have completely dropped, beef used to be beautifully cooked, and was so tender but now it was just rare and tough. The older female server was incredibly prickly and confrontational in relation to any negative feedback. Hate the fact it's card only and service charge is automatically added when presented with the card machine, sadly the changes you have made we won't return

I am very funny about roasts, I don't actually like them very much but this was the best roast I have had in a LONG TIME. Beautifully cooked meat and vegetables and the Yorkshire puddings were gorgeous. Staff were all very welcoming and friendly, lovely cosy feel to the pub. Will definitely be coming back, amazing!

I don't like to post negative reviews. I reckon everyone can have an off day sometimes and shouldn't necessarily be punished for that, but today's experience was unforgivable. 3 of us visited for lunch. We ordered drinks and main courses. Drinks were fine - 2 glasses of wine and a cider. 2 out of 3 main courses were sent back as the meat was raw in the centre - not blushing pink, but raw. This was a lamb dish (£28!) and a pork dish (£18) The pork was still raw when it came back just a few minutes later, though the lamb was just about cooked. The cook (my food experience here cannot justify using the title of "chef")came into the bar area after the plates were cleared but made no attempt to engage with us and/or apologise. The bill was discounted by 2 glasses of wine. Really? I will not return to this pub until it changes hands again, and I will not recommend it to anyone that I care about .

Called for evening meal whilst visiting the area. The food was good but pricy for basic pub food of average portions and service prompt as we were the only people eating there at the time. The interior was functional with little atmosphere. I was disappointed at having 10% added to my bill as a service charge as there was no mention of this in the on line menus or at the pub. Not sure if it was normal or due to being strangers (tourists) to the area but I felt it was sneaky practice and something that should be made clear at the outset. This made a pint of local beer £5.50, a glass of wine £10 and a pub burger almost £19!! I like to tip off my terms and not being forced on the issue as this was the case. Unfortunately we found this a disappointing experience.

A lovely setting in a quiet English village, this has all the old-world charm you could hope for. Indeed, this is reflected in beautiful interior and the welcoming service. Things even continue to in a positive vein when we receive our starters. A lovely gazpacho, steeped in flavour, onions and garlic, was complemented by a lovely scotch egg full of meaty rusticness. Alas, the moment the main courses came out, the standard roast dinners we had ventured out for, it all went wrong. I don't know if you like bland, dry pork, squidgy roast potatoes, and burnt cabbage (although, the latter is intentional), but if you do, this is the place for you. The brown stuff smothering it will be right up your street too. The biggest problem with this dish, though, is that cabbage. Charred cabbage can be very nice, but on a bland roast is simply overwhelming. The taste of is everywhere and will be all that you remember. A shame as things got off to such a great start(er). A bigger shame when you realise how overpriced everything is. Twenty pounds for a plate of dry meat and crusty veg? Still, I want to end on a positive note, so can I just add the single bit of carrot I had was lovely?

First ever visit. We arrived at 5 so still nice and quiet. The Longs is cosy and stylish. We bought drinks and asked for menus which were brought to our chosen table. We were advised the kitchen opened at 5:30pm. We already knew what we wanted so hubby asked if we could go ahead and order. The gentleman who served us said the chef was in and he was sure he could start our order early if we were hungry. We were in no rush but happily our order was taken. We both wanted to try the ploughman’s and a side of chips so not much cooking and hopefully not putting chef out too much. The food was beautifully presented and every element fresh and delicious. We cannot recommend this place highly enough. We will definitely go back soon.

Stopped of the off chance to get a pint and some early food. Great pint of Butcombe and ordered the burger for £17 with dirty fries. Really friendly service and obviously the local pub for the village. The burger when it arrived was quite small and clearly not home made but out of a packet. Reasonable filling with cheese and relish . The roll was stale. I sent it back and got another which was not a lot better. These aren't soft rolls but then they have to be crispy and soft, not just solid. The roll that wasn't huge clearly dwarfed the patty. The dirty fried were a mess. served in a small ramakin type bowl, covered in a tomato sauce so all soggy , and cheese and jalapeno on the top. If you are going to serve this combination, it needs to be served flat with half the sauce so that the fries are still crunchy. Really poor quality and value for 17 pounds. I am only writing this review so you can improve. You can't charge high prices then get away with this level of quality of food.

I ate there twice in one week when I was last here four years ago and it was exceptional. I’m afraid it’s obviously changed hands as I’ve tried it twice this week too and it was very ordinary. Such a shame. I’d go there for a drink as it’s beautifully fitted out etc, but for dinner ? No. Very limited menu and the food was just ok.

I never thought I would be writing this review. This is our favourite place to eat out and we took friends who were visiting from Spain. It must have been the chef's night off! My husband and I chose Pie of the Day which we have had before and loved. This was not the same! Pastry was dry and tough, filling was dry and the separate gravy was far too salty. Chocolate mousse for dessert was very un-mousse like - more the texture of hard rubber. We said nothing at the time because that would have spoiled our friends' evening and it was uncharacteristic of our usual experience. I'm sure this was a blip and we will go back - just hoping that this was a one-off!

The Longs describes itself as a gastro pub but there was little evidence of this on our visit. I’ve never been presented with such a limited choice of main dishes at any pub. My burger and fries was edible but overpriced at £17. I found an old menu at our holiday accommodation and it bore no resemblance to the menu we were given so I think that the Longs has unfortunately lowered its standards drastically whilst raising its prices.

4 of us visited for Sunday lunch, my mother, her step mother (whose birthday we were celebrating), my girlfriend and myself. The staff were very friendly and helpful, offering smaller plates for the more senior members of our party and being generally friendly and helpful. The food was reasonably priced and generally very good. The only things that stopped it being 5* all round was that the roast potatoes could have been slightly more cooked and slightly crispier - there was nothing wrong with them, certainly nothing to complain about or send back, just that they could have been better. Also the dinner plates came out warm but could have been hotter, meaning that the meal would have stayed hot for longer - there was plenty of it so it took a while to eat it all! Overall we all enjoyed it, and would be happy to go back again

Don't get this muddled with the other Longs Arms, a Hungry Horse restaurant and a completely different thing (I will say no more). Delicious food, lovely, lively local pub too and full of local people. Staff were friendly and welcoming and the food tasty - veggie food on offer too. I would definitely recommend this pub - just don't expect a formal and dull meal, but we didn't mind the chatter and the fun that people were having around us.

Had a very happy Golden wedding celebration event at the Longs Arms. We used the function room in the garden which was perfect for the range of ages we had within our party, enabling youngsters to run in the garden while the oldies chatted inside. Caroline was away but Angela, Val and the team looked after our family really well throughout. A really enjoyable day.

Excellent food friendly service, typical country pub. Nothing too much trouble. Have eaten here on several occasions when in the area and it is always a pleasure.

Wonderful pub set in a lovely village. We needed somewhere in the area that would please meat eaters and vegans and this gem left everyone saying they wanted to go back. It has varied menus of great food for everyone and the staff completely understand the needs of a party with mixed diets. Definitely telling our friends!

I'm staying in Steeple Ashton for a few days, and decided to try this great pub for the first time this evening. I was very impressed. Great food, lovely staff, and really nothing to criticise at all. I started with French Onion Soup, which was really good, then followed with smoked haddock, equally good. My friends had the same main course, followed by crumble and custard. We all loved it, and will definitely be back.

My husband and visited for his birthday meal. He chose Rib eye steak & salad and I chose the home made fish fingers, both with chips. The mushy peas that came with my meal were incredible, never had anything close to this good before.

Today was our first visit to the long arms and it won’t be our last. We received a warm welcome, the service was good despite the place been busy when we arrived. The food was delicious and there was lots off it.

We had lunch inside and the place was lovely, very cosy. Our daughters found many books and games for them. The food was very good, the service could have been better, slow and not attentive. Very good (cold) beer and nice selection of ciders. Lovely walks nearby, lovely little village.

We popped in for Sunday lunch and there were no more than 3 other tables being waited on (with 3 members of staff, front of house).

We actually visited for my birthday dinner, although the staff didn't know this. It was a Tuesday and quiet at first but the pub filled up as the evening went on, with another birthday going on at the next table. The one barmaid was quite rushed off her feet taking orders both in the dining room and at the bar but I felt she did a good job and we were never left waiting too long.

The Longs Arms is a busy little hostelry, where you can have a convivial drink or a meal from their varied menu (of much local produce). Ther is a separate eating area off the main bar room. The food is good and reasonably priced for the area. During a local stay of 10 nights, we ate here on 3 occasions.

There are three sets of couples in our diners club. We all go out for a meal every month and each couple takes it in turns to choose the restaurant. It was our turn this month and we chose The Longs Arms in Steeple Ashton. We have three vegetarians in the group and it is sometimes quite hard to find a good restaurant to cater for this. The menu at The Longs Arms had some great options for vegetarians, vegans and gluten free. There was a whole menu for vegans which Is something I haven’t seen before. The food we all had was exceptional. My husband (not a vegetarian) had Claire’s steak & 6X pie. He said it was the best pie he has ever had. That’s saying something as he’s had a few pies in his time. I had the soup of the day which was mushroom, and Haddock pancakes for my main which was on the specials board. Both were really delicious. The food is all home cooked. The venue is a 17th century coaching inn and very well presented. The staff were really friendly and attentive. Our dining experience was a great success.

We went midweek for lunch with friends. Ample parking outside. In a very nice village setting. Public bar area very quaint, bright with lots of atmosphere. Restaurant screened off next to bar area. Good, friendly service. I had steak and ale pie. It was incredible. Lovely pastry, big chunky steak that was so tender it just fell onto the fork. Lots of fresh veg. Would definitely not hesitate to go there again

Lovely outside setting for lunch in the sunshine looking out on the hotel grounds. Excellent service. However very expensive for what you get.
