We booked for one night on a weekend break. From the picture on booking.com it looked like a very cosy country pub but in fact there was no cosiness about it. Basically just a restaurant and no comfy seating, just unpainted tables and chairs. Service for food was very slow. Our evening meal gave us nowhere to sit before or after except at our table. The food, however, was very nice. Breakfast service was not very good. Staff shortages left just the host serving about 4 tables. One of which was a 6 man "walk in" table. The host gave this table 100% of his attention, whilst we were not asked if we wanted juice, toast or condiments with our food. Once again, the food was nice but the little touches lost. A party of four young men came in to ask for a table for breakfast but were told they only accepted booked tables, which I found strange as the party of 6 were walk ins. The room was very comfortable in a block outside the actual restaurant. I would not book again as I thought the money that we pay for a service was not up to standard.

Had two rooms booked for two of my staff. Pub was shut , keys in doors, rooms were filthy, no heating, no hot water. They rang me and I booked them in somewhere else. Booking.com don't want to know so won't be using them again. With Covid about we don't know who had been in that room. Absolute disgrace. Will be seeking legal action to recover my money.

We booked 3 nights at The Crown Inn from 26/02/2020. On arrival there the Crown Inn was in total darkness. Expecting to eat there but letter on door [that we only located with the aid of a torch] advised us that restaurant closed due to ill health but we would be able to eat at another of their pubs approx. 3 miles away and would be given 10% discount. So unable to rate a restaurant that doesn't even open would be impossible. Being there for 3 nights proved that it just wasn't open and looked to be in a spot of trouble! We had booked breakfasts and somehow or other still managed to eat a full English thanks to a very resilient breakfast chef.

Stayed for a night in February 2020, on arrival there was a Peter pinned to the door saying facilities closed due to staff illness. So we got to speak to no one. On finding key in door. We entered and the room was filthy. To be honest loads was wrong with this place. On complaint bill was reduced but this shouldn’t have happened. See the photos!! Rubbish from night before was everywhere. Shame I can’t load more than ten photos.

No hot water and no heating in room (basic requirement really). Very old and tired room with a dirty bathroom. Complained about lack of hot water on a number of occasions and was offered no help at all. This is a shame as the lady serving at the bar in the evening was lovely and the food was also of a good standard. The let down is the state of the rooms and some areas of the bar / restaurant (toilets in bar are also of a very poor standard). Signs all over the building advising that refurb is on going, however, a sign on the toilet apologising for the state of them due to a leak that occured in the summer is not really being pro active in fixing the issues (it's now December !).

Stayed here a lot a few years ago and went back last Friday evening. We were travelling up from Devon and my wife called ahead around 8pm to ask when they stopped serving food and was told by the lady it was 9.30pm. We arrived and checked-on and enquired where to order food only to be told they've stopped serving. I informed her that my wife specifically called ahead and was told it was 9.30 and she said 'yes but orders need to be in by 9.15' I checked my phone and it was 9.14 - I explained by her statement I should technically still be able to order but she said 'The Chef's gone home.......there's a kebab van 3 miles back the road'. The room wasn't great either with a minuscule TV on the far wall that was only visible by binoculars and no bedside lamps so in the night you had to negotiate your way to and from the bathroom in complete darkness. I mean, how much for a couple of lamps? £9.99 in Argos currently). The bathroom was old, tired and a lot of mould around the sink and bath. Really not inline with the 21st century and the price they charge - it was more like student accommodation or hostal. Shame really, with a little effort on customer service and a small amount of money spent it could be acceptable. Until then I shall stay elsewhere

We stayed 1 night for a family party in Chippenham. Our room was OK, except the toilet had not been flushed properly, which is inexcusable. However, the towels were fluffy and clean and the bed was clean. Bathroom was fine and the shower was hot. Breakfast was lovely and well cooked - when it finally arrived. This was not the fault of the lady cooking it - who was having to serve 14 guests, clear away and bring tea, coffee etc, and carry everything from the kitchen to the restaurant. She did her best in ridiculous circumstances. We had to wait ages for the food - not her fault. The place is very run down and is being renovated, but more staff are needed if they are taking so many bookings. Our relatives had a family suite in which the only toilet did not work at all. There was a coffee machine in our room, which was useless for making tea. A simple kettle and teabags would have been lovely!

Me and my wife booked for 3 nights, but only stayed for 1 night. To say it was dirty is a understatement. The carpets where grimey and filthy throughout the hotel. Our room was not much better. As soon as we walked in you could smell the decay. The bathroom was disgusting, with a dirty toilet and shower. I needed a shower after a 6 hour drive, but didn't have one because of the state of it. This is the first time we've ever walked out of somewhere. And we have stayed all over the world for the past 31 years. I voiced my concerns to the girl on reception and she agreed. I know the hotel is having a refurb, but they should not rent rooms out until it's complete. I've emailed the hotel , but have had no reply. Please don't stay here. It's would be best to find somewhere more expensive, Just as we eventually did. Very very dissapointed.

A family stay, 3 adults and one child we had low expectations due to the previous reviews but had little choice due to finances: First the positives- decent space (family room) We enjoyed our evening meal, lots of veggie options and small portions also available. Not seen in many places so well done!!! Cosy bar space. Clean towels and a coffee machine in the room. Lovely cookies! Woman working bar and reception on 27th July was friendly and polite. However: toilet cistern took so long to fill that with 4 of us needing the loo at times this was not acceptable and we ended up using the bar/restaurant toilets. Slightly embarrassing. Outside area had not been cleaned/swept there were discarded cigarette butts, an empty bottle and can left out and weeds that had been pulled up but left on the ground. None of these were cleared up during our stay. Coffee machine was provided with English tea options, I had my own tea bags(herbal) and so had to ask for a kettle to use these...kettle was given to me and filthy. Carpet was dirty, the whole place is neglected. I do not understand why any self respecting owner, manager or indeed any member of staff would not want to be proud of where they work, so much potential and little bits were good but so much is wrong and I do hope that who ever is in charge if this place takes note of all the reviews and takes on board the small things it could be done to make a difference whilst they are working on the big things. It would be lovely to see a response on here from the owner/manager. I see no previous reviews have been acknowledged by them.

Where to start, probably with the odd welcome as we arrived whereby the owner simply looked up from his phone and said “What?”. Not sure why else we would be at a reception with bags other than to check in? Checked in & paid for the two nights, saw the rooms, had a beer and left, the place is shocking, the rooms smelt as did the bathrooms, beds were hard, carpets filthy, bar looked sad and run down, outside everything is rotten and even free courtesy and a friendly welcome was missing. Nice pile of junk as per photo just by reception shows the owner does not care. Not sure when the Trip Advisor photos were taken but trust me it looks nothing like that now. Asked for a lager and was told its off, all beer taps with a glass on the top were off, owner still on the phone swearing at them as he was locked out his email address. Did not even look at the menu, gone six o’clock and nobody in the kitchen doing prep. This was a two-day business strip, we simply moved to a better hotel, yes cheap at £60 a night but not worth the stay even at that price, if you do stay bear in mind there is no soap or anything in the bathrooms.

Beth I stayed at the Crown on 7th, for one night. When I arrived around 5.30 the property had just had power restored. The staff was surpriesed to see me as an email had been sent to me cancelling my trip.....why not a phone call as it was urgent! And no effort made to suggest an alternative venue for me. You cannot imagine how distressing this was. The young lady did her best and showed me to a room, if I hadn't got my dog with me (making it hard to get accomadation) I would have left. The carpet leading into the room was black! The cistern in the bathroom took well over 30 mins to fill. The young lady asked if I wanted to pay using the credit card I had used to reserve the room, I said no but as she couldn't get into the system and I was in a hurry to get out to a meeting it was agreed we would sort it on my return. I got back around 9 pm, spoke to her re several problems such as the TV not working so she said I could swop rooms, after all I was the only person there! Having swopped rooms (the toilet had not been flushed after the last occupant and the carpet at the enterance was equally dirty) I made for the bar for a drink and to sort out my bill only to find the lady locking up and leaving to go to your other pub. This also meant I had no access for the internet! The tv had only limited channels, mainly shopping! Next morning I again tried to sort my bill but only the chef was available and no managers were available on the phone... Later in the day Several attempts were made to reach me but I didn't have my phone with me. I have rung several times with no success and I have left a review on Expedia and on your site. Yours extremly unhappy  I have had to resort to this becuase neither the Crown ( apart from a few calls on the Saturday whilst I was busy) nor expedia have bothered to contact me. Made worse because Expedia took the money from my vredit card the minute I made the booking so no way of getting my money back!!!

The rooms are very spacious, they have all a coffee machine and home-made biscuits, the mattress is very comfortable and the shower is big enough for a tall person. The majority of the rooms come out to a sunny inner-courtyard.. Plenty of parking space. The pub is cosy and they have a small but good menu. The bar is very cosy and food was good. Room spacious however, carpet is dirty, toilet disgusting. When I lifted the toilet cover, the toilet has not been flushed , still very yellow with urine, splashes on toilet seat. There was a bottle near the coffee machine with 1/3 water in it. I can see the room was not tidied properly after the previous occupant left. There were towels but no soap and shampoo provided. Tried to ask, the staff was apologetic and told us they ran out of soap and shampoo. They could have told us in advance and we could have bought some from sainsbury. The funny bit was, there was a handwash in the toilet and was suggested we could use it as body wash. Ermm!

There were 13 of us in the family gathering and we had booked in advance. It was a shame that we were separated table wise 1 table for 5 and 2 tables for 4. The whole point of the gathering was for us all to “catch up” as with most families geographical and every day life issues prevent get togethers happening on a regular basis. There was only one member of staff covering the bar and waiting on tables so it meant we all didn’t eat at the same time. There was a new chef in the kitchen so one tables order was taken at a time, so table one was served and had finished their food before table 2 had finished theirs and table 3 even got theirs. On this occasion that wasn’t really an issue but for anyone else it could have been. The food was good and as stated on the website it’s traditional home cooked food. It is very apparent that the pub and accommodation is undergoing a renovation at the moment but once work is complete I’m sure it will be a stunning village pub where you will get good food.

First impressions of this place wasn't great but we was miles and miles from home and as we was attending an air show we had to stay. The room was dated, dark, had damp in the bathroom, no hot running water out of the taps and was told it was due to a water leak near by, day two still no hot water. Food was ok but not worth the price so the second night we ate elsewhere. Beer was off and two members of staff had no idea on when it would be back ok. I was advised it was because of the lack of CO2. Well real ale doesn't need C02 it on it needs it as a safety blanket. None of the electrical items has been pac tested for over a year and NOTHING telling you the procedure if there was a fire in your welcome back or on the door. I didn't spot any fire extinguishers about. This place is a building site. It's over priced for what you get. It has potential and I'm sure it will be a lovely place once it's done. It's put me of returning in the future

We booked The Crown Inn in error but with the hope of serendipity decided to try it anyway. Stayed less than 5 minutes. Walkway in very uneven paving stones and broken boards. You then walk down a slope into the main building past an enclosed courtyard with bin bags left out. Opening the door a strong smell similar to wet dog hit us. This was on a very very hot day in a run of many hot days. The receptionist may have heard us comment on the smell as she was situated behind a wall on our left. I initially decided this was why she seemed less than enthusiastic. We paid and she showed us to our room which was back outside off the courtyard. She opened the outside door and I looked down on a filthy floor. I was relieved when she then unlocked a further door and I realised this floor wasn’t ours. It didn’t get any better. Before leaving she asked if we had any questions so out of politeness I just asked where breakfast was located in the morning. Even as she answered I was already doubting I’d want to eat there as the wet dog smell was here too. The room was depressing and the dark wood furniture had ring marks on. The carpet was filthy and on seeing a fitted carpet in the bathroom including around the toilet and broken and mildew tiles around the bath we rang and booked a room at a nearby hotel we’ve been to before. My husband travels extensively in the UK and stays in hotels weekly. He said this was by far the worst room he’s ever seen. We picked up our bags and I went straight to the car while he returned the key. Naturally the receptionist asked why we felt we couldn’t stay and when he mentioned the dog smell she said they don’t have dogs. I can only imagine the smell then must be from the filthy carpets. Honestly, if the owner reads this please go visit the rooms at The Crown 10 miles up the road which is where we’d intended to book and where we ended up moving to. The difference is like chalk and cheese. Stop taking bookings on such sub standard rooms as you can only be damaging your reputation. Refurbish and don’t take room bookings until then. We may have lost our money on the room but you lost our custom for dinner and return visits as we visit the area half a dozen times a year.

Staff are very friendly, the pub is undergoing improvements inside and I'm sure once finished the place will look great. Lots of parking, only point to make is the outside space leaves a little to be desired. With summer coming up it would be great to see some pub benches out in the sun, maybe make use of the space to the back of the car park. Almost feel bad for sitting in the courtyard as you don't want to disturb the rooms! We will definitely be returning for another roast and will reccomend to anyone looking for a delicious carvery!

My partner had deep fried brie followed by roast chicken . Both starters were excellent , the soup was tasty and came with plenty of fresh bread and butter . The brie came with selection of relishes, which my partner enjoyed. Both roasts came with Yorkshire pudding and stuffing , which we thought was a really nice touch . Good selection of vegetables and another nice touch was the fact that we told that if we wanted more veg , then just ask , so we did !!!! Staff were very friendly and made the meal more enjoyable. Last of the nice touches was the fact my pint of lager was served in a pre chilled glass , not many places do that !!! To some up great meal , good staff and pre chilled lager glass !!! Mu Mum and I visited this establishment on Mothers Day. We had booked our table previously and were promptly shown our table on arrival. The staff were lovely - welcoming, friendly and attentive. We were offered a complimentary glass of either prosecco or a soft drink which was nice. But what let it down was the food. My mother ordered the beef roast and asked for 2 slices (you could have a choice of 1, 2 or 4 slices). But it was very tough and in the end she only ate 1 slice as she couldn't face chewing the second piece. I ordered the chicken supreme but was also disappointed with that as it was overcooked and dry. The gravy lacked good flavour also. However the vegetables were okay.We did tell the waitress about the poor quality and she apologised and said she would pass our comments on to the chef. You cannot fault the staff but regrettably the lack of quality in the food means that we are not likely to visit here again. Such a shame.

Menu is very limited for vegans but we are used to that. My partner and I ordered the one vegan item which was a pizza then ordered standard food for the kids. Bear in mind the pub was empty, the food then took 1 hour to arrive and when it did it was family shocking!!! The vegan pizza was actually like a flat bread with a sparse amount of salad as topping no where near worth 10 pound per pizza and was stone cold as were the thimble of chips at 3.00 per portion. We asked for plates and condiments for the kids and soon realised they were not coming. The service was terrible the food was even worse being cold and gross at best and this cost £70.00 I would avoid this place like the plague.

We stayed overnight at this pub/hotel on our way back from Cornwall because we wanted to visit nearby Lacock village. The pub looked great, as it was an old building and quaint and charming from the outside. The rooms were set around a small courtyard which seemed delightful. However, once inside, we thought they were undergoing a refurbishment as the reception was full of old equipment, broken chairs, and boxes of items. Not a very inviting entrance. On further investigation and seeing our room and ensuite, we thought that a good coat of paint would make such a difference. We asked the staff if the pub was undergoing a refurbishment but they didn't know which really means that it wasn't! The place wasn't clean and there was dust on the furniture legs etc. It was a great shame as the building has such potential. There were very few other visitors on a Saturday evening!!

Should have checked on here first and didn't - a real disappointment from start to finish. The place is under new management and being refurbished - didn't know that so you walk into areas that are clearly being repaired and a reception area with broken chairs and food servers abandoned. We decided to eat in the pub on night one though it was very quiet which seemed odd. We ordered drinks and food and had to chase up our drinks 20 minutes later and the one lady on duty had forgotten! Not like it was busy and she walked past us numerous times sat at an empty table!Food then came - fish on top hot but everything else stone cold - freshly made food I doubt as my husband's mushy peas were frozen in the middle!! Needless to say, the poor service and poor food meant we didn't eat in there again for our 3 day stay. The room was a two bedroomed bungalow which is a real plus for a family - lacking was the cleanliness (see photos). This place could be fabulous but it's not a great sign when the people aren't trying extra hard to please customers so that they excuse some of the disarray. The lady serving us on night one did say she wouldn't charge us for the food and then did charge.Fingers crossed they turn it round but for the moment it's an avoid from me!

Myself a my family of 10 visited the Crown for a change as family had traveled from London. Ordered a classic beef burger which was covered all over in pepper and had large hard bits of pepper in! Was unable to eat. Called over a young girl server explained the situation she replied with are you allergic? We answered no it's just you should really make clear on the menu it will be coated with pepper.. at least advertise as a peppered burger considering how much pepper was in and around the burger. Server replied with any allergies should be made aware to us before ordering even though we had no allergies to worry about. Another member of family mentioned that things like this should be advertised. Little information on the food you are ordering.. the sever then began to argue with several members of the family about this burger. She was very rude and directed her anger towards us. For the rest of the night we were left with a young lad who told us it was his first day here so bare with him! He went above and beyond to make our continuation of the night a pleasant one laughing and joking about with the younger members of the family we had with us. Outside in the beer garden the young lady walked past us and rudely happened to mutter something under she breathe and she walked past and continued to send the whole group daggers for the rest of the night and did not give any of the group eye contact when saying goodbye.. the young lad deserved a medal to have dealt with her awful mood all night. No offer of another meal or a refund of the meal until we demanded to not be charged for a meal we did not eat. The food is edible for your dog. Chicken burger was a rubbery texture dry. Flavourless. Sent out salsa instead of sweet chilli with the prawn starter. Children's pasta was cold. Out of Garlic bread and had to ask for it half way through meal to then been notified after 10 minutes of asking they had ran out but we could have bread and butter if we wish. Asked for Garlic mayo with 4 burgers all came with plain. Forgot drinks on a regular basis.. the night went down hall more and more until the young lad on his first day took over and did his upmost to make our visit a little more pleasant.

I had lunch today at The Crown with a business friend and the food was of a good standard and a very pleasant time was had by both of us. I have been going to the pub on a fairly regular basis over the last ten years and during this time seen many changes in Landlords and hopefully the couple who now have it can turn it around and get the custom the pub needs, in the middle of a refurbishment so hopefully they will be there long term and turn the pub and restaurant back to the standard it needs to be.

We spent a night in the family room as had intended to bring our dog who in the event didn't come with us. However, the dog friendly room was beautifully presented, almost a mews cottage in a pretty courtyard. Very comfortable beds, plenty of electric sockets and wardrobe storage. Had our dog joined us he would have loved his large and comfortable bed complete with treats and pillow toys! A prior engagement meant we were unable to try the menu that evening ... a shame because local friends have recommended the food. We did however try the vegetarian breakfast which was most enjoyable, freshly cooked and great value for money. Chatted to several members of staff and discovered that this family run pub is as pleasant to work in as it is to be a guest. We have no hesitation in recommending The Crown and look forward to future visits to this lovely place.

We had three rooms booked prior to a day at the nearby Castle Combe racetrack and had selected The Crown as it was close to the circuit, had a large car park and seemed to be good value for B & B. My room seemed OK at first, apart from a minuscule TV that was impossible to view properly from the bed without binoculars! Come on guys, you can buy a decent sized TV for less than the cost of two nights stay.Settling in for a shower and a shave before going into the bar for dinner, proved to take longer than I imagined it might. I had to run the water for a good three minutes before any actual hot water came. I was just about to go and find a staff member to ask for another room when the hot water finally appeared. Where is it being pumped from? The English Channel? The lady behind the bar was friendly enough and there did seem to be a good choice of beers. We ordered our food and were advised that the bar closed at 10pm. Hmmm, OK. Strange, but hey ho!The wait for food seemed to be crazy as we were the only people eating. In all fairness, although the food took an hour to arrive, when it did, it was excellent. We had some steaks and a fish and all were superbly cooked so well done the chef.Unfortunately, the same chef was obviously not on duty when we rolled up for breakfast at 7am.The Crown had been just about OK until breakfast. There were many problems which began with the poor attitude of the server. She was just about as polite as she needed to be but no more. No friendliness or customer service skills at all.As we waited for our full English breakfasts we discussed the previous nights painfully slow food delivery. We could not believe that we could see many slimey slug trails clearly evident on the dining room carpet! Obviously, these had been left by the kitchen or waiting staff the previous evening! When the breakfast did arrive, the sounds of the microwave beeping from the kitchen confirmed what we suspected. It was terrible! A true English breakfast is not cooked in a microwave guys. Not good. It's a little sad that this venue has such great potential but delivery is so poor.If it were not for the excellent steak, I would be scoring this pub even less favourably.

I had a dog course to attend near Royal Wootton Bassett and decided to bring my family, including our dog, along for the weekend. We booked two nights because we don't get out of Cornwall much and thought it may be warmer up country. It was but we didn't get to enjoy the second day! Our room had a Slug on the bedspread, hair all over the loo, mould on the shower tiles, dust and grime in the loo extractor fan, cobwebs in the room and the beds reeked of cigarette smoke even though the room said no smoking. It felt dirty. I didn't take off my shoes the entire time. We couldn't turn down the heat and felt unsafe to leave the windows open as it was on the ground floor. My Mastercard was put on alert for fraud so I couldn't pay when we checked in via their booking portal so had to pay manually. I only found this out when I got home. We cancelled the second night, asked for our money back but were told that we would only get it if someone else booked the room. They did and we did get almost half of our money back. We paid £61.50 for a room that made my teenage son want to sleep in the car and my dog be stressed out, not to mention the lack of sleep and 10 hours of driving for one lousy night!

Be warned the Inn is totally disabled unfreindly, large steps approx 10 steep deep steps to reach the reception/bar. The floor in the room I was a given was sloping and uneven. The heating was turned off, I was there to stay in mid March. Asking If I could turn it on ,was told "If you like" I did at 9.00 ish. It was 4am before it started to warm. Anyone 'slightly'retund would not fit into the loo/en-suite, (don'the forget to wear a thick dressing gown) The security is practically no existent, with a dodgy room lock and door out onto the car park kept open all night. The light in the room is very inadequate. The was a hole beneath the mat in the passage way about the size of a pudding dish which I trip over on.

My first impression of the room was the peeling paint on the front of the outside door. Even worse on returning to the 'chalet-type' room was that the door number (8) was missing, which made it a little confusingThe lighting was dingy and the location of the TV wasn't conducive to a neck-ache free evening.Although the shower was powerful, the drainage was not very effective where I found myself standing in ankle deep water. The room was cold with one radiator by the front door not effective at all. I ended up turning the bathroom radiator up to full temp, but then suffered something equivalent to the 'Chinese water drip-torture' with the radiator routinely clicking every time it reached its optimum temperature. This obviously did not leave me feeling refreshed in the morning.Wi-Fi was only accessible in the restaurant area, which restricted my ability to do my email work back in the room. The evening meal was good though I do wonder where the cheese was in my 'Chicken wrapped in bacon 'allegedly' stuffed with cheese' main meal.Breakfast was advertised for 07:00am onwards. But when I arrived at 07:10am I found the area locked up, in darkness with a member of staff waiting outside for the key-holder to arrive. Breakfast was eventually good and reasonable for the price. That said, an option of juices would have been well received. Not my best experience of Wiltshire hospitality and will not be returning any time soon

We ordered 7 roast dinners and one childs pasta (which had no garlic bread as the order hadn't come in, we weren't offered an alternative). We waited another 30-40 minutes before our food eventually arrived. I must say that the roast dinners were very good though not worth the wait. The childs pasta however was awful and tasted like some sort of gone off cream. We told the waiter who said that he couldn't understand how it could be bad as the food is all made fresh and reluctantly took it off of the bill. Would also like to say that the children's menu is quite expensive for what you get. We were really let down by the wait and the child's pasta and will not be going back!

The Crown is not somewhere I can recommend from my experience. Whilst the price is very reasonable and the location pretty good for visits to Bath (with a car) the hotel and pub are badly managed and fall far short of the standards a traveller should reasonably expect today. I will not harp on save to say that the dinner was poor and "ham & eggs" was tasteless and looked very unappetising. The room (a two bedroom bungalow) was simply furnished and would have been acceptable except for three massive issues! Firstly when pulling back the duvet to go to bed we were faced with a large blood stain clearly visible on the mattress - not what anyone wants to get into bed with even if under the sheet!! Secondly, the rooms had wood lice wondering around -that had obviously gone walk-about since the last vac and thirdly a shockingly bad shower. The kind where you wonder if anyone has actually used the shower head in the last decade. How can no one have not noticed that not one single jet actually flowed in the right direction? With that and the inability to balance the temp between clap cold or a boiling hot dribble the shower was simply not fit for purpose. When I checked out I asked to speak to the manager and the young lady that came forward was polite but clearly lacking in either authority or care. She listened and simply said it was difficult because things weren't always reported back! I had £40 outstanding from the dinner to settle and as a gesture of goodwill she said she would knock the food off - but we still had settle to £12 bar bill. Ok.

Only one bothered to engage the locals and quite frankly we have got to the point where we are bored with going in to see if it has been turned around.... Some friends stayed here in August and found it dirty and the breakfast awful. Such a shame as it used to be a really busy, fun pub to go to. I think it sums it up when a response to a bad review took them nearly three weeks to address...... For the people who run the Crown my view is held by not just me. You could have a regular group of people who come to use you.

Decided to revisit this establishment for a drink I. View of possibly booking a birthday meal. We arrived at 9 p.m. On. Saturday night, the signs were not promising as there were only about five cars in car park, which on reflection must have belonged mostly to staff. However, we ventured in, there were about four diners and one couple drinking at the bar. It was decidly cold, myself and a friend decided to bag a seat by the fire, which was sadly nearly burnt out. My husband was unable to get any drought beer although there were six pumps. So he had to settle for lager which he is not fond of in cold weather. There was no atmosphere and we got the feeling it was barely in business. We thought things were looking up when a part arrived, but they took a look around and decided to go to their rooms. We didn't bother staying for another drink as we. We're freezing by now.

At 9pm on a Saturday evening (15th October 2016), called in to re-visit an old local pub, not been for a year or so and faced with a bar with half a dozen pumps but not one charged with any beer! Only option was an Italian light beer/lager type. Although there was a log burner (and masses of wood stacked around it), dying embers only leaving the area chilly. A few people were eating (perhaps staying over night) but no local activity or atmosphere. Sorry but this was not a good Saturday night venue. We drank up and went to another local pub in nearby Biddestone. We weren't there to eat so cannot rate it for food. Felt the drinks were hotel priced, rather than local pub, which I guess reflects the managers/owners' objective.

The two young women running the inn the weekend we stayed were very friendly and helpful. We stayed (four adults) in the "bungalow" which was very spacious and comfortable (one twin-bed room, one double, a large sitting room area and a large shower/toilet) but as it is on the road, it is quite noisy (although the A420 is not very busy). Also - and I apologise to the staff that we didn't mention it while there - there was a very strange noise coming from what appeared to be the boiler room next to our bathroom. The room was locked and it sounded like someone was trying to get in, every now and then all through the night (which they obviously weren't!). Rather disturbing! There was clearly a problem with the plumbing as, sometimes when flushing the toilet, muck bubbled up in the shower. As we only stayed two nights, and are quite easy going, we didn't mention it. But the place was cheap, clean and convenient. I like that food is not included so you just pay for the breakfast you choose, be that porridge, toast and jam or full-English. There's a good choice of breakfasts and prices are reasonable. Dinner was also good: reasonable choice, nice food and fair prices.

21-09-2016. I called in this afternoon to look at the menu and venue, along with the serving of a drink prior to booking for a meal with friends. I used to work here.On arrival and parking my car, the grass is overgrown and weeds everywhere including the patio - complete with filthy overfilled ash trays! Great start!!!I went in to the bar looking for a way in to the toilets - all blocked off, but I managed to get to the ladies (I'm disabled!). Two out of three toilets had no toilet paper! A good start!Went to the bar and waited for a couple of minutes for the young 'bar man's to finish his conversation with three of his friends sitting at the bar!I asked for a half of Kronenburg. He said that they didn't haven't that and told me about four different bottled ciders that they sell!!!!! I told him that I hate cider, what lagers do you have? I asked for half a draught lager and a clean ashtray for outside. I also told him about the lack of toilet paper in the ladies toilet. "I'm not a cleaner!" Was his reply. But he said he would replenish the toilet paper and he would give me a clean ashtray.I went outside to the awful patio area with the 'clean' dirty ashtray - it had been emptied and swilled with water. But it was not clean!!!This young man probably earns the minimum wage (hopefully) as do the cleaners (a thankless job! But I know how hard it is, having cleaned rooms, restaurant and bar in my own business). After this awful experience, I won't be booking a table here, nor will I set foot in this pub again! It used to be a lovely oldy world place with great managers and staff, that cared about the place and it's customers. Unfortunately, this is not the case now.Good luck to those who venture here.

They explained that a lot of the menu was off as they are undergoing a change of ownership.I enjoyed my Scampi and Chips but my partner's Mushroom risotto was disappointing. The side order of vegetables came straight out of a freezer and they looked it! I came in lucky again in that I enjoyed my apple crumble and custard. My partner's Chocolate and Nut Brownie was inedible. It was the sort of thing you get wrapped in cellophane at a motorway service station, chewy, with an odd odour and probably a 2 year seel by date. To cap it all the coffee was too bitter to be drinkable. It tasted like it had been stewing in a pot for hours in spite of coming from an Espresso machine. We refused to pay the full price, something I have never done before. Even so, when we deducted the things we did not want to pay for,it came to £28 for two. The staff were very apologetic and I felt sorry for them. Went for the Sunday carvery and although the selection of meat was very good and tasted very nice we were disappointed with the quality of some of the veg.The sprouts and green beans both tasted has being frozen (quite chewy and not very nice), not fresh and likewise the yorkshire puddings. I understand the convenience for the kitchen, but I would rather not have been given the choice of frozen veg just to leave it and waste it.

Uninterested and untrained staff (even rude?). I ordered a steak, but was given "half" of a steak. The waitress insisted that I had asked for "half a steak" although we told her that I hadn't (ludicrous - who has ever asked for that). I had asked for a half pint of bitter. She disappeared. A few minutes later the chef came round to explain how he had prepared a "half" - but when we told him that we did not, of course, ask for a "half" of a steak, he just turned his back on us and shot off. We waited, expecting him to come back and offer something, but he never returned. I'm not a complaining sort, but felt this had to be dealt with. The next morning I took it up again with the person who stumbled out of somewhere to settle the bill, still rubbing sleep dust out of his eyes. I explained what had happened. He just simply ignored what I said. The staff here, all of them, could do with a bit of training in customer service (or maybe they've had the training, and they were taught simply to ignore anything the customer says). The crazy thing is the tiny bit of steak I had was very good, as was the rest of the food. But that was the only good thing. The whole place needs re-furbishing, along with the attitude of the staff.

We visited on Saturday 2 April 2016. Having booked a table for six people at 7pm, we were put in a room completely removed from the rest of the pub and apparently forgotten. It took over 20 minutes for someone to come and take our order. Having taken our order, we then waited over 45 minutes for the food to arrive. The chef came out at one point to inform us that he was unable to serve the Dover sole, which was on the specials board, due to the fact that the fishmonger had not pre-prepared the fish. When the food did eventually arrive, 3 out of the 6 dishes were inedible and the mussels were half empty. The Skate wings smelt and tasted of ammonia and were dried out as if they'd been sitting under a heat lamp for a long time, as was the Oven Baked Salmon. The steaks were the only dishes eaten. Having raised our issues with the waiting staff, they offered to remove the dishes from the bill. We were then completely ignored and the table was left uncleared. At no point did anyone ask if we would like dessert or coffee and we had to go in search of someone to ask for our bill.I'm not sure if they were short staffed or just incompetent but we will not be returning.

Nice pub nice staff but the rooms and service need so upgrade. My room had no light shade on the main light, mould in the shower (lots) no pictures on the walls and a very uncomfortable bed. Booked and paid for breakfast the night before came down and no table laid up and a surprise to the staff, that said breakfast was excellent thanks to Paul the chef.

First time in the pub booked a table for 3. Lovely warm welcome from all the staff. My nan who is 95 used to be a chambermaid in the war times & my nan was talking to the staff about it.they all took the time to listen to her it was so lovely she could share her story & others be interested. Food was absolutely delicious 😋 Lovely atmosphere all round would definitely recommend & will be going back again.

I thought I would book dinner at the hotel as a surprise for my husband as we got married in this lovely hotel exactly 5 years ago. I emailed ahead of time and told them it was our anniversary and why we I wanted to book a table there. What a let down…the hotel has changed so much since we got married there in 2017. When we first arrived the receptionists were cold and not at all welcoming,we didn’t even get a happy anniversary from any of the staff which I thought was so unthoughtful. I explained I was gluten free and was given a normal menu and was told anything could be made gluten free. Great I thought, the food was horrendous.. I had a pie with different ingredients in to what was on the menu, the salad it came with was a couple of limp lettuce leaves and some potato wedges that were ok and the best thing on the plate! My husband had a steak and it was ok, certainly not worth the amount we were charged for though as the quality was not great. The poor young waitress gave us the wrong menu…I don’t blame her as she was doing the best she could and kept apologising for the mistakes. We were given a complimentary dessert as we had over a 30 min wait for dessert …great, checked the bill and we had been charged for it so again the poor waitress sorted that out on her own. There were two conferences on at the hotel and the staff were clearly overwhelmed. Such a disappointment, over priced poor quality food, lack of staff and just completely down hill. I pity anyone planning an event here as it’s changed so much.

The restaurant has been completely refurbished and looks most attractive. It’s a shame the food is not . I ordered soup of the day which was apparently vegetable, but didn’t taste of anything and I sent it back because it was not hot. It came with a very very small piece of bread. I asked for a larger piece and was told by two separate waitresses that ‘it was not company policy’. The coffee was horrible too. I never write reviews but felt that as this was so bad they deserved it.

Lovely outside setting for lunch in the sunshine looking out on the hotel grounds. Excellent service. However very expensive for what you get.
