The Sunday roast was excellent today and I’d have no hesitation recommending. Beef, pork, vegetables and Yorkshire pudding all cooked perfectly.

Seriously disappointing! Firstly only 2 staff for the whole pub, very unfair on them. They forgot my partners starter and said it would take too long to get out. There is one thing I think a pub should be able to get right and that's roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. All the Yorkshire puddings were burnt. Even the lady behind us commented on hers it was so black! The roast potatoes were chewy? Not crispy at all. All the vegetables were over cooked and mushy. The beef was meant to be rare on the menu, far from rare, and the chicken was so dry. Probably the worst Sunday roast I've had for a long time! No one asked how our lunch was - probably a good thing. Maybe the chef had the day off! Will not be returning to Sunday lunch here.

Visited to celebrate a house move (not ours) and birthday - service was lacking - ended up going to the bar 3 times ourselves to get drinks. Our meal took 3 hours so clearly didn’t need our table for anyone else. food unremarkable - chicken skewers had no taste of the garlic/lemon promise of the menu. Highlight was the Camembert chilli chutnies and the marshfield ice cream and chocolate brownies

I went here with a group of U3A friends for lunch. We had a very good meal, everyone was pleased with their lunch. The service was great and the price reasonable. I was, however, a bit surprised when my pie and veg was served without gravy although to give them credit they did find a small jug of gravy leftover from Sunday lunch. Not sure if they would had it been later in the week. The real shock came with the bill. I don’t normally buy a drink as I don’t believe in drink driving. This time I decided to treat myself to a lemonade and lime. After the price I was charged (£6.10) I doubt I will treat myself again, I will just stick to water in future as a glass of wine would probably have been cheaper. I might have expected the price had I had a Bacardi in it.

We were very impressed with the menu and quality of food at the Rattlebone. We were staying just a short walk away so on our first night in the area we dropped in for a pint. The staff were very friendly and the beer was cold! During our chat we noticed a member of the kitchen staff take a plate out to someone sitting at the bar, and I made a comment about it looking like a Treacle Tart. It turns out it was the chef and he stopped to chat to us - he was trying out a new Treacle Tart recipe and had just taken a slice to the manager on duty to get feedback. I told him that my wife's (seated with us) favourite dessert is Treacle Tart and that when we were married in Canada 24 years ago we had to have Treacle Tart on the menu. The chef Damien (from the south of France) rushed off to the kitchen to get us a piece of the tart to try (we did not ask for this he was just being hospitable). Our table of four all agreed it was the best we've ever had! He has lemon, lime and orange zest in the recipe so there was a lovely citrus note to what can often be a very sickly sweet dessert! This was a lovely interaction and although the kitchen wasn't open on this night we promised to be back later in our stay. Three nights later we stopped in for a proper dinner and were blown away by the quality, variety and freshness of the food. All four of us at our table agreed it was some of the best pub food we've ever had in the UK. I had the pork steak that was made from Iberico Pork and it was ridiculously similar to beef with lovely charring and fresh accompaniments. My wife had the risotto, my sister the cold pork salad and my brother in law had the pie on the special sheet - all were excellent. What a treat it was to have such a wonderful culinary experience in the little village of Sherston.

Just dropped into the Rattlebone for lunch. 3 of the meals were fine but my wife ordered the quiche. When it came it was the smallest, thinnest piece of quiche you’ve ever seen wit a few salad leaves. When the landlord asked whether everything was ok I told him the quiche was rather minimalist. His response was that it was a starter - which was nonsense as it appeared on the specials board in between a number of main courses with nothing to indicate it was a starter. And who ever has quiche for a starter? My wife is not a big eater but we have just arrived home and she had to make a sandwich to keep her going. We have often gone to the Rattlebone after visits to Westonbirt, but we’re so disappointed this time that we will not be going there again.

We have eaten here three times whilst staying in Sherston village over this half term. All three meals were absolutely excellent: the Sunday lunch was perfect and tonight we sampled the fish and chip evening. I can honestly say that this was one of the best British classics that I have tasted in a long time - everything was delivered to absolute perfection! The quality of the food is outstanding: all 6 members of our party thoroughly enjoyed all of their meals. It was way above what we would have expected from a standard village pub. We also enjoyed the quiz night on Monday evenings. Please keep up the good work - a great community asset to a stunning Wiltshire village. Thank you very much!

This used to be our pub of choice & we ate here very regularly. However, back in May we had a very poor experience with both food & service & have stayed away since. Now in December, decided it was time to return. Arrived around 1pm, stood at the bar for a good 10 minutes during which I was totally ignored by the bar maid who did everything except make eye contact, not even a simple “I’ll be with you in a moment” She vanished & eventually another member of staff arrived to tell us there was a 1.5 hour wait for food. I can understand the last bit, but there is absolutely no excuse for being ignored. Perhaps the food is back up to standard, but we will never know because we won’t be returning.

I had a delicious - memorably so - dish from the 'specials' - hake (not usually my favourite fish) with broccoli, mashed potato and served on a bed of well-de-salted, non-gritty and perfectly cooked samphire. I was delighted that such an unpretentious dish could be so delicious! The pint of guest ale (I'm afraid I can't remember which one I had) complemented the meal perfectly. Where to start. First we were challenged with not having booked, when shown email confirmation begrudgingly given a table near bar. Mains when they arrived, home made crab cakes (mashed potato in crumbs) certainly no ‘crab’ cake! This was heavily laden with spicy chilli jam, clearly to disguise the total lack of crab! No drinks offered, no desert or coffee. Safe to say we were ignored for the duration of our visit. Staff more concerned with chatting to each other than caring for paying customers! Reputations need to be maintained, they can be lost much quicker than they are gained!

This used to be the best pub around but recent changes are definitely not for the better. The staff seem to have been completely replaced with people who have no experience, no skill, no personality and no desire to be there. Examples include: being ignored at the bar, tables being dirty, cutlery being handed out by the eating end, sauces not being offered and no clue what the culinary terms on the menu mean! The set lunch menu is also a shadow of its former self. Gone are the local sausages, creamy mash and 48hr gravy. Now the limited choices are heavily vegan inspired with a burger and fries as an alternative. Very little off the main menu becomes a special. To mask the lesser ingredients, all dishes are heavily spiced, even some of the desserts! It’s no longer good value, good choice or friendly staff which is so sad. The Cat and the Custard Pot is probably your best bet unless you crave spicy vegan food.

A delicious lunch sitting right by the fire warmed the heart and filled the need superbly. Can't criticise it at all. Pleasant ambiance and welcoming staff made it a meal to remember. It is also only 10 minutes drive from Westonbirt Arboretum which was our afternoon destination.

Stopped in Sherston to eat at another place only to find it closed so found this lovely place by default. On entry it is clearly a community hub with the bar area alive with locals and their dogs. There are seperate restaurant areas and the man in charge was happy to accommodate us as a walk in even though there were a lot of bookings. A nice choice of mains and starters were available and at reasonable prices. My Steak and Kidney pie with fresh veg was one of the best I've had... and I like pies. My son had a fantastic veggie burger and my wife had a starter of pork belly and a main of goats cheese brulee. Clean plates all round speaks volumes for the quality of the food. Highly recommended.

In our search to find the best food pubs since our move to Wiltshire, this lovely pub in a stunning village has just moved to first place. Having been turned away for lunch a few Friday’s ago because they were too busy I was tempted not to return, but we decided we should probably see what all the fuss was about. We booked this time and good job because it was absolutely full again for Saturday lunch. Excellent friendly service throughout our lunch, I had a Liver, Bacon and Black pudding special which was one of the best meals I’ve had in ages. My wife had Ham, egg & chips and also raved about it - especially the ham. I couldn’t resist the warm treacle tart and salted caramel ice cream for pudding, despite being pretty full and this was divine. To top it off they also serve on draft my two favourite ales - Timothy Taylor and Tribute. Needless to say we will be making the 30 min journey from our home again very soon.

Today we visited this pub after a recommendation from a friend. We were a family of 6 varying in ages and needs! We booked which was a good idea as the pub was busy for lunches. Everything was fabulous from our really lovely attentive waiter and waitress to the menu choices and then the food. Now we really are a fussy lot but there really is nothing negative to say about this place! We probably are quite annoying one veggie, one GF , one wanting mains with the starters, one only wanting a small portion etc. Nothing seemed to be to much trouble all served up with a big smile. We will definitely be going back here again. The pub itself is cosy and relaxed. It was nice to see drinkers with their dogs in the bar. Perfect

Cold hand-carved ham and two eggs with home cut and fried from fresh chips were indeed as good as one could get anywhere. The Roast Spatchcock Chicken was moist but not quite as good. I had no trouble in engaging the staff in the right conversation to ensure what I ordered was safe for me to eat (medical diet). Enquiries were made in the kitchen and the ordered changed as a result.

We ate here for Sunday lunch. Had a warm welcome and our drinks order was promptly taken. Bit of a wait to order our food but it was busy. We had 2 of the 3 meat roasts, a roast beef and a roast pork. The food was delicious and hot. Once we had ordered the service was prompt. The bourbon biscuit chocolate torte was excellent as well. Would definitely return and recommend.

As a celiac I am fairly well up on food allergens. I was surprised therefore when the waiter (who I think was the Manager) told me Orzo pasta is gluten free. I declined the dish but was left concerned by his lack of knowledge. This would have been a dangerous mistake.

We were going to Westonbirt Arboretum and decided to turn off the main road to see if we could find a nice pub. We got to Sherston and there was the Rattlebone Inn. It was quite busy, which was a good sign and I spotted a good array of beers as we went to look for a table. We got a table but were advised it is always safer to book as it can be full at the weekend. Daughter chose the calves liver, wife chose the fish and chips (a large portion) and I went for ham and chips. The chips were proper chips, hand cut and chunky. The ham was delicious and a generous serving too. Three happy diners. We found the place by accident but will return on purpose.

Good welcome, good food, good atmosphere. What more could you ask for. We opted for the ham, egg and chips which was well presented and hubbie had the pie of the day with chips and peas. They were happy to swap out the boiled potatoes and veg, which is always a good sign when they give the customer what the ask for. Overall lovely surprise to find this place.

Stopped here for coffee and lunch at the start of a summer cycling tour with my wife. Arrived a little earlier than planned (we're fitter than we think) so had to wait 15 minutes for them to open up, but it was a lovely warm sunny day so just sat in the garden until they were ready. Went inside to enquire about coffee which I ordered and they kindly offered to bring it out to us which they duly did. The waiter asked if we were stopping for lunch because they had a large party arriving in about 20 minutes so best to place an order quickly. He gave us 5 minutes then came and took the order and the food arrived very promptly and was good and well prepared.

Know this pub well and would recommend it. The chef is great, the food excellent and the staff helpful. They serve Tribute ale which is one of the best and the food very good value.

I thought I would book dinner at the hotel as a surprise for my husband as we got married in this lovely hotel exactly 5 years ago. I emailed ahead of time and told them it was our anniversary and why we I wanted to book a table there. What a let down…the hotel has changed so much since we got married there in 2017. When we first arrived the receptionists were cold and not at all welcoming,we didn’t even get a happy anniversary from any of the staff which I thought was so unthoughtful. I explained I was gluten free and was given a normal menu and was told anything could be made gluten free. Great I thought, the food was horrendous.. I had a pie with different ingredients in to what was on the menu, the salad it came with was a couple of limp lettuce leaves and some potato wedges that were ok and the best thing on the plate! My husband had a steak and it was ok, certainly not worth the amount we were charged for though as the quality was not great. The poor young waitress gave us the wrong menu…I don’t blame her as she was doing the best she could and kept apologising for the mistakes. We were given a complimentary dessert as we had over a 30 min wait for dessert …great, checked the bill and we had been charged for it so again the poor waitress sorted that out on her own. There were two conferences on at the hotel and the staff were clearly overwhelmed. Such a disappointment, over priced poor quality food, lack of staff and just completely down hill. I pity anyone planning an event here as it’s changed so much.

Lovely outside setting for lunch in the sunshine looking out on the hotel grounds. Excellent service. However very expensive for what you get.
