Seemed like a good idea to hold an evening surprise for my wife in our local. I started as a meal for family and a simple birthday cake !! we ended up with a full blown do with ballons, place names (mini penguins) and a rather large cake in the shape of a penguin (we ended up sharing the cake with the whole pub and still took some home). fortunatley a member of the pubs familly is a professional cake maker (thanks Kay).

Beautiful Country House set on absolutely stunning ground. The staff were all brilliant. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and would highly recommend. The rooms are a little dated, but that doesn't take away anything from the stay. It's a country house, so in all honesty, it's to be expected. The food is also amazing!

We called booking a table for later that evening; the manager/owner was extremely friendly and accommodated our need for pushchair space next to our table. This is the first time we had had an evening meal out with our sleeping baby, and we are conscious and worried that establishments (and their customers) don’t want to dine next to a baby of an evening...well this was allayed when we commented we had a baby “no problem” was the instinctive reply which made us feel at ease. The food was really excellent...I had locally caught fish

This is probably our 4th or 5th stop off at The Crown on the way home. A pub we discovered not long after lockdown after walking in Cheddar . It is an absolute stunner- a hidden gem. Traditional olde worlde with proper stone floors and a roaring fire. Lots of outside space but today after a walk at Goblin Combe we dropped by and that roaring fire was very welcome. We grabbed a couple of ales which were very nice and on a whim ordered a sandwich each. We’ve never eaten there before and these were amazing . My wife has rare roast beef and there must have been about an inch thick of lovely thinly sliced beef. I had ham and cheddar on granary - again absolutely thick with filling and lovely bread. It seems silly fussing over a sandwich but even the side salad was very good. I can’t wait to come back and have a lasagna on another cold day after walking. Staff have always been very friendly -it is obviously a locals pub but has never felt that they treat outsiders any different. Probably the best pub we’ve ever been to?

I am pleased to say that this exceeded our initial expectations. Although our room was on the small side, it was comfortable enough and came with the added bonus of a small private terrace which, had the weather been a little better, we should have been happy to take advantage of. Intrigued by the ‘homemade nachos’ on the menu, we took the gamble. Sensational! The rest of the menu was pretty mainstream but the choices we had were well cooked. Breakfast was of a good standard.

Very cold and unwelcoming reception from young girl at the bar. The other lady quite friendly. Didn't know if they did food. Mostly a mans pub vibe.

No comments on the breakfast which was good but is part if the hotel rating. As for the restaurant concerned… As a hotel guest I ordered bread and oil from the menu. What we got was ordinary brown bread with sunflower oil mixed with some balsamic vinegar. Disgusting and unacceptable! Also as a hotel guest not opting to put this on the room not pleased with the exorbitant 12,5% gratuity fee.

The Fountain was closed for several years until bought by a local builder who has turned it around into a fantastic local pub with excellent really reasonably priced food. Such welcoming staff who seem happy to work here. Food is generous and hearty with great specials served on Thu fri and sat. My husband recently had a sirloin steak for £20 which he said was one of the best he’d ever had. Kaya Lee and Kevin are doing a great job. Long may it continue.

We booked for Sunday lunch as we were staying in Colyton but unfortunately our meals were not very warm at all and the gravy was tepid and watery, we did mention this to the lady serving but there was no apology in fact she just brushed it off. So disappointed as we had a lovely meal here last September when we were in the area and we were looking forward to our return visit. We will not be back!!
