Went here at the weekend and what a great pub quite old fashioned compared to most pubs these day but that is the charm of the place. We went here some 6 to 7 years ago and still looks the delight it was then quite small but homely and comfortable. As for the service great, the girl who served us was 5 star and they had a good range of beers and ciders and as for the food that was very tasty, well cooked and very good value for money compared to most places these days. It goes to show you don't need to charge a fortune to make a pub work these days and that's why it will away have many happy customers for many more years.

Delicious dinner served by the lovely Katy (a genuine star - polite, efficient, friendly and super helpful). I tucked into tasty steak served with chunky chips, tomatoes, peas and mushrooms whilst my mum & sister enjoyed ham, egg(s) and chips and my nephew devoured the chicken breast! Yummy desserts too. Generous portions and very reasonable prices. The New Fountain is back on our radar and we will definitely be back next time we’re in Whimple. Highly recommend. Our thanks to the staff and chef.

They were all fabulous. We could not fault anything. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The pub itself was very quiet but hopefully that's just because most people are still paying the Christmas credit card bill. We will definitely be visiting again and I would be very surprised if it's not busier next time. Thanks to the chef and staff for a fantastic evening

We had a family get together for dinner in the small, back room of the pub. We had pre ordered as there were 10 of us. The room was set up very well to accommodate us so that we could all chat and we were welcomed on arrival. The drinks were served efficiently and the food was hot and served just as we had ordered, no mean feat when serving steaks, pies etc and different veggies! Everyone agreed that the food was excellent and a great time was enjoyed by all! Would definitely recommend this lovely little traditional village pub with proper pub grub at great value for money.

The tenancy of this pub has been taken over by the chef and the menu improved. It's a little, local pub, with welcoming bar staff, a warm woodburner and a choice of local ales, as well as the ubiquitous lagers. The Sunday roast - no choice, but changes every week - was lamb, which suited us fine. Generous portions, good service, and £7.95; what is there not to like? Three pints later, the world seemed a much rosier place

Staying in the village we walked to the pub from our hotel. It is small and on a Friday night very busy. However the staff were very welcoming and the regulars very friendly and chatty. We ordered drinks and food at the bar and found a table in the area with the dart board, as the rest of the tables in the main bar were occupied. The starters arrived quickly even though it was busy and we tucked in. They were perfect. When the main courses arrived unfortunately, the fish pie that my wife ordered was cold and she had to send it back to be reheated. The waiter couldn't have been more apologetic and helpful. The food came back piping hot and we continued with our meals. When it came to paying, my wife's glass of wine had been deducted from the bill to compensate for the cold meal. We had a lovely evening. Thank you.

We had supper here one weekday night in January. In spite of some of the less than positive reviews we decided to give it a try since it was within walking distance. There is a small cosy bar, quite well stocked, house wines not great but not expensive. Staff were friendly and helpful. This seems like a nice 'local'.Sadly the food lets it down. The menu is encouragingly short but certainly not 'locally inspired' (pizza, curry, lasagne). I had a salad with blue cheese and walnuts to start - leaves were OK (possibly from a packet?) but barely any cheese or nuts. Followed it with curry and rice - once again, lots of sauce but hardly any meat. Portion control is evidently in operation. The sauce was not particularly tasty. My husband had fritters which he said were crisp but tasted of nothing much. My treacle tart for pudding was good but my husband had a rather dull cheese plate which looked as if it had been too long in the fridge. In all very disappointing and I am sorry we chose to eat here. It seems either as if they don't care about food or they need to completely re-think their menu. If offering few things then make sure it is good. If keeping it cheap then use simple ingredients but cook them in a more interesting way. One good thing was that it was not expensive.Do drink here but don't expect tasty food.

Have been a frequent visitor to Whimple for the past five years and always enjoyed the simple but extremely well priced food on offer at this pub. As usual I sat and read the comments in the visitor book to see what past visitors have discovered. Imagine my dismay at several less than favourable comments I found there about The Fountains Inn. Not to be deterred I visited myself and found myself echoing those comments. Little change to interior although can't say I was disappointed with that aspect, it is after all a local pub that should have quirky charm, but unfortunately the same can't be said for the prices being charged for food. If I wanted to pay those prices I would stroll down to the Thirsty Farmer at the other end of the village which caters very well for that end of the market. As a word of warning, the local in the village I live in tried this approach andfailed to please either locals or visiting trade. Thankfully they saw the light and have returned to an honest local booster. Will be interested to see what the visitor book throws on my next visit to Whimple. Until I read more favourable comments I will not return.

First time visit to our Local for food after the change of ownership. We were encouraged to take our friends to the Fountain as we had recently enjoyed a take-away pizza which was very "Italian".We received a very friendly welcome & the service was prompt. The food was very well presented & plenty hot enough. My steak & ale pie was excellent, tender & tasty meat with a very light pastry. I would probably have preferred more gravy but that's a minor point as I thoroughly enjoyed it. The chicken curry was good as was the fish & chips & the special of fish cakes & salad - the fish cakes were substantial but there may have been a misunderstanding over the salad as we needed to prompt for it (& overall it was a light-ish meal). Must mention the delicious chips !One of our companions thought the crumble was excellent, especially with the accompanying custard, the chocolate tart was OK (maybe slightly dry), & the lemon poset was good although the lemon was overwhelmed by the raspberries. All in all quite impressed & we will return.

We had eaten here many times before but this was the 1st time since the new owners have taken over. We were a little worried that too many changes would have taken place but we needn't have been. It's been spruced up and feels lighter fresher. We sat at our usual table in the corner. We ordered 2 gammon and 2 steaks, both cooked exactly how we asked. The gammon was amazing, a nice thick cut piece, cooked to perfection. The sirloin was succulent and the mushrooms and onion rings were amazing. The chips, well, fabulous! We all had dessert, ice cream, banoffee pie, sticky toffee and chocolate torte, all of which were delicious. Washed down with a bottle of house Chardonnay, very good and well priced, and cider/ales. Finished off the evening with a very good 'plop plop' decaf coffee, a rarity in most pub restaurants. Very well priced, high quality food and drink, presented wonderfully by friendly, welcoming staff that we felt we could have a laugh with. We will defiantly be returning with our friends who live in the village and will certainly be recommending The New Fountain for a good night out.

Pubs serving food are becoming ordinary, but sometimes, rather pleasantly, hidden behind that ordinary pub look is something a little extraordinary…….and this is one of those pubs. Our visit was with friends just before New Year’s Day and was one of those pleasant dinners that are enjoyable in themselves, with old friends, whatever is taken for dinner. The menu offers no surprises in itself. Dishes you would normally find on a pub grub menu are all there, steaks, fish, pies meat and two veg types etc. The place itself is very comfortable, it is like slipping into that old cardy, and it has that homely feeling, no spit and sawdust habits here, thank you. Basic tables and not a great quantity of them, which is good to see; other places cram so many tables in that sometimes it feels like a dinner for 4 can be a dinner for 8. Knife, fork, spoon and napkin, no frills. The staff and the regulars here are really pleasant and have that old easy going West Country familiarity. Now the food……I had the fish pie after many minutes of procrastination, one of those times when I could have ordered the entire menu. This was good solid, well-cooked fare and had to be home made. Big chunks of white fish, some smoky background themes and tender prawns in a good sauce, topped by well-made honest to goodness nothing added, well-seasoned mashed potato. A side of perfectly cooked vegetable melange, al dente where needed, served hot and fresh. The wine here is good, someone knows their way around a tasting sale and has chosen well. The house Merlot was very good. We had one of those occasions which in the assembly of its elements, was a perfect evening, in a perfect place with an ordinary expectation turned into an evening out of the ordinary. The pub itself, and I'm not a local, is a little out of the way, but if you are ever on the A30 and you see a turn off for Whimple; take it and enjoy perhaps a lunch or a dinner outside of your normal pub grub expectation. You won’t regret the small detour.

We have eaten at The New Foundation Inn on a few occasions over the last two years or so. The food has always been fairly average but also very cheap. Me and my wife went for dinner a couple of Saturdays ago with the family and unfortunately it was very disappointing. I was therefore surprised to see so many positive reviews recently.I had a nice pint of Reel Ale on arrival and my starter of fried smelt was nice although I had to ask for some tartar sauce as it didn't come with any. The missus asked for the risotto as a starter rather than a main but this wasn't possible as it had already been "portioned up" (frozen). For mains I had steak & ale pie which appeared to be home made, however going by the vast amount of steam coming from it and the soggy pastry I think it may have been microwaved. The spicy wedges weren't spicy and looked like they had been deep fried at least twice and then microwaved as they were also steaming hot. The vegetables had been steamed or boiled excessively and were like mush. A couple of people had Thai king prawn curry. The prawns were quite small and bland and the curry sauce tasted very processed. The half and half (rice and chips) option made it feel like a cheap takeaway and everything seemed to come with a bland salad of iceberg lettuce, a slice of cucumber and tomato. The wine was ok and also pretty cheap as was the meal in general. I think the bill for 8 people was about £135 which is incredibly cheap considering we had a couple of bottles of wine and everyone had two courses. However the quality of the food was so poor we would all rather have cooked at home and saved the money. A real shame as the pub itself is lovely.

It's getting very difficult in Devon to find many original old traditional pubs serving pub grub for sensible prices - many pubs here are now gastropubs with prices to match. We thought we would try the New Fountain Inn tonight and it turned out to be exactly what we were after. A pretty little traditional pub, five or six tables, quaint inside, locals at the bar with their dogs and a great warm welcome. The food menu is actually quite extensive and all homemade, ranging from chicken curry half and half (rice and chips), gammon, steak, fish and three or four veggie options, and at at very sensible pub prices ( for example, ham sandwhich for 2.50, gammon steak with chips 8.95, chicken curry 6.25. The food was delicious. I even treated myself to a desert ( hot choc fudge cake ) afterwards. Definitely be going back here again, though I would advise ringing them and booking a table beforehand just in case.

I have enjoyed this pub over many years. This evening was delightful - full of people many knowing each other and mostly known to Michelle and really friendly to others. I had a simple sausages egg and chips with mushrooms and baked beans. Really good value and well prepared.Hit the spot as I had not felt like cooking for myself. Leaving, I saw that I and others had been blocked in by a car and walked back. Two smokers outside the front door picked up on what was happening and spontaneously went to get the culprit whose car they knew, came back with him, him with apologies, and the whole thing resolved with good grace. In his defence the car park was packed which maybe tells you something about this pub and its warmth. I've eaten at the other Whimple pub too and you'll find a more sophisticated menu, much higher prices and little atmosphere. Guess which I prefer.

On entering the very homely and friendly pub we were warmly greeted by Michelle, and no time at all were sitting at a table enjoying a drink and receiving advice on the menu. The menu and 'specials' cater for all tastes, and there is the added bonus of it all being home cooked on the premises by Michelle's mum Gill (or is it Jill?).I had steak and Kidney pie, and my wife had the fish pie, both of which came with piping hot vegetables and were delightful. To follow I had the home made bread & butter pudding with lashings of custard and my wife enjoyed the steamed ginger pudding. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the very friendly environment, and the bill was incredibly affordable. Gill (Jill) even found time to come out of the kitchen and chat.Having looked at a number of other establishments and deciding that they were not for us, we visited the Fountain again the next evening. Not only did Michelle greet us with her huge smile and an offer of the same drinks we'd had the night before, but we were also greeted by all the locals - wonderful!Once again we ate well and had a most enjoyable evening.Rejoice with us, this is NOT a pretentious "Gastro-Pub". My yardstick price is £7.95 so when I was told it was only £5.25 I was a little wary. True the ham was machine cut but tasty, particularly with some English mustard from a pot not a packet. Plentiful too, as were the chips which were also really hot. The two eggs were well cooked; not dark yolk so probably not free range but still OK. Washed down with a pint of Ruby ale it was very enjoyable, perfectly acceptable food and very good value. The rest of the menu looked quite interesting so probably worth a return visit.

Good old fashioned food, none of this "drizzling nonesense" and veg arranged to look pretty! good plateful of food just what you want! Childrens meals and smaller meals for pensioners on request, nothing is ever too much trouble. Nice and quiet no fruit machines or loud music or pool tables. Plenty of parking worth visiting the Heritage centre aswell.

A small rural village pub obviously popular with and full of locals. Made to feel very welcome - staff and customers very friendly.Good selection of specials at good prices. Had s+k pie which came with excellent selection of fresh veg. Friend had half a honey glazed duckling, equally delicious.Several rounds of drinks, main course and coffee was only £30. Bargain!Fairly small place and booking definitely advised. Place was full on a Thursday evening at 7pm!Great home cooking. Everything appeared handmade and freshly prepared with the exception of chips and wedges from what I saw.Definitely would go again if in this remote area in future.

We go here about once a month for lunch, food is very good home cooking style. There are some delicious desserts but nothing pretentious, and there is always good selection of beers. There are some very friendly cheerful people behind the bar who always make you feel welcome. It is popular and always advisable to book even weekday lunchtimes when mostly senior people use it. The pub is slightly old fashioned but that is its charm. It is a true local, and its easy to chat to other customers.Well behaved dogs are also welcome.Prices are VERY reasonable.

Popped in for an evening pub meal. Obviously a 'locals' pub. The decor is dated. This pub is not pretending to be anything other than a pub as how they used to be. Most tables in the main bar area were reserved, so previous reviewer probably right about best to book. Cheerful and friendly young lady behind the bar who quickly took our food order and got us our drinks. Food selection on blackboards and a printed menu. All typical pub grub. Started with a shared breaded garlic mushroom with mayonnaise - hot and just what you'd expect. Next we chose home made steak and kidney pie and lasagne. The pie was very meaty and delicious, accompanying (3) veg a bit overdone, new potatoes lovely. The lasagne was quite tasty but accompanying salad just iceberg lettuce leaves, tomato and cucumber; lots of good chips though. Finished with an extraordinary bread and butter pudding, looked terrible but tasted surprisingly good! All in paid £27 including drinks so very good value and a very filling and tasty meal.

We've dined here three times in the last six weeks. Very good old fashioned English pub with a great atmosphere. The food is "pub grub", very good value and well cooked. It is almost always necessary to book.

We were holidaying near by and walked into Colyton. We thought we'd pop in for a quick pint and ending having three. A very friendly pub both the staff & the locals. The beer was superb, they really k
