Great place to eat in Sidmouth and reasonably, will go again if I return to Sidmouth

Clean and inviting but was disappointed in the portion size. When you pay over £12 for sish chips and peas, I expect more than 13 chips

For fish and chips, this is our go-to place. However, in our last outing, we noted the serving was smaller than usual and the price has gone up, too.

While we were in Sidmouth. This week. We called in the white horse chip shop. Ate in the seating area. Food was absolutely great. Fantastic menue. Staff were great. Very friendly and helpful. Very clean. Service was very good. If you are in Sidmouth. Highly recommend this fish and chip shop. Thanks guys

Great fish and chips! Good size portions and everything is freshly cooked. Worth the wait if there is a queue, but they work very hard to serve everyone very quickly. Highly recommended.

Sit in for fish & chips. Excellent quality, cold drink nice and cold. Portion size (cod & chips) was filling. Service was fast even though busy in Folk Week. And very friendly. Easy to find a table, but decor pretty bland. Recommended.

Honestly, I don't know where to start. Average tasting food, not seasoned. Tasted ok and priced ok. Won't go back! I've been coming here for over 20 years... much better places to go!!! Attitude to my comments weren't well received 😕

We visit the White Horse Cafe every summer with our children. Honestly the best fish and chips in town and compared well with other good places I’ve been too.

Avoid, worse chips I've ever had, they were dry and tasted like they had been cooked in old oil, thankfully I didn't pay for fish, the peas were OK, a rainy miserable day, made worse by horrible food, wonder if the chef had a day off, I only went because of good reviews.

Had cod & chips. Sadly extremely greasy chips. So much so that the box had a puddle in the bottom. Not good and inedible (shame as it was a decent portion). The fish was marginally better and seemed fresh but batter very soggy with grease.

I ordered a quarter pound burger the one I got was not a quarter pound but a thin patty burger un toasted bun no salad very bland did not eat it not a nice taste wasted my money

We thought we would treat ourselves to fish & chips whilst in Sidmouth. Never again, the worst we have ever had. The chips were old and refried, so hard to eat. Ended up throwing away and the portion wouldn't even feed a child. What a rip off at £10.85 for a small ( very small ) haddock & chips.

Very pleasant place for lunch in central Sidmouth. Basic, no frills but very clean - staff constantly clearing and cleaning tables. Busy little place with what appears to be a regular clientele - always a good sign. Good choice of food - menu more extensive than your normal fish & chip shop with daily "homemade" specials - although on both of our visits we have experienced limited availability / shortages on these specials. It was not a problem though as there is always plenty of other dishes available. Everything we have eaten here has been nice - freshly cooked, piping hot and filling. Slightly expensive for what is effectively a cafe/fish & chip shop but highly recommended for convenience, friendly staff and good food. We have eaten here twice now and will return on our next visit to Sidmouth.

Says it is open on the site but when got there all closed up at 530pm so didn't get chance to try the food! Not happy!!

Called in as the children were hungry. Wanted Chicken Nuggets and chips plus a Cheeseburger. Wouldn't serve the Cheeseburger without chips so ended up with more chips than needed. After paying asked for a sachet of tomato ketchup. Unbelievingly this was an extra 25p!! Ended up spending nearly £12 on two small children's meals. Will certainly be avoiding this place in future. The young man serving didn't seem to want to be there. Sidmouth has some lovely cafes - this is not one of them.

Decent food, freshly cooked, with friendly service. But quite pricey and no options except chips for gluten free. They'd also sold out of quite a few things by the time we ordered at 6pm. If you're eating in, be aware that they close the seating area soon after 6pm. Take-away stays open longer.

Excellent fish and chips. Cooked to order. Fish batter is perfection and not thick stogy undercooked like most chip shops. With a nice cuppa. Just need some music on.

Adequate seating or so we thought but it was reserved. The fish cakes are not freshly prepared they are brought in and low quality the textures too mushy the bathrooms look like they haven't had a good clean for a very long time. Low value product result in ordinary average meal closes at 7pm

Very conveniently located in the centre of Sidmouth and very busy at lunchtime for both takeaway and eat in. Seemed to be a reasonably fast turn around on tables, so luckily we didn't have to wait. We had the cod and chips, with mushy peas and tea. There is no table service - go up to the counter to place your order and pay, and then listen out for your ticket number to be called before collecting your food. The cod was excellent! A large piece of fish with large white flakes inside a very crispy batter. Delicious! The chips were a little disappointing as they were rather soft and limp, and at £12.25, I felt they could have put a few more on the plate. And the tea is a tea-bag in a mug of hot water for £1.30. Go here for the fish!

Brilliant chippy with quality fish and chip.

I enjoyed it two days in a row lol.. Thanks to a locals recommendation. Haddock and cod both was delicious not forgetting the fishcake and chips was amazing. Must try.. Will definitely visit in the future when in Sidmouth.

Great food nice atmosphere, a bit expensive for my liking ,but in Devon it's about the average price £36 for 2 adult fish n chips and children nuggets and chips and 3 cans

Nice fish and chips from this place. We go every year for a treat with our children. Best one in Sidmouth IMO. This year the chips weee a little cold and hard but still good. We will be back.

Finally found a decent place to get fish and chips after 2 years of living in Sidmouth!... Avoid The Prospect!

Chips were rock hard been heated up many times staff were rude got refund but only on chips never again.

Chips were covered in black bits, overcooked and tasteless, mushy peas bitter. Avoid like the plague. Absolutely rubbish.

The food is good but it closes WEY to early

On a day out in Sidmouth, we asked Trip Adviser where the best fish and chips were and The White Horse Cafe came out top. So to give the cafe the benefit of doubt, perhaps it was just a bad day. It was a simple order - battered haddock with chips and scampi with chips and mushy peas. The haddock was cooked well with good crispy batter. Scampi was overcooked. Mushy peas had a nasty yellow hue to them. Chips had obviously been hanging around for a while as they were hard and dried out. But the worse thing was that the cooking fat obviously needed to be changed so the whole meal tasted awful (even without the other issues!) And the service was incredibly offhand and disinterested. We would have been happy to pay £25 for the meal, including 2 soft drinks if it had been good. But it wasn’t. Hopefully there is somewhere in Sidmouth that serves better fish and chips than here!

Good Clean and staff respectful friendly and professional

The fish and chips is such a small portion I thought it was an OAP version. For the price you pay it is a real shame the portions are so small. Paying the price they charge you would expect to feel satisfied with your order. I don't understand why they don't give you a normal portion size and try to be so tight. What a shame, will not buy from here again.

We have been going here for years. I would often take my Nan here. Always enjoyed it and food was always great tasting and a good size. We went yesterday (21/01/23) was very disappointing. The food tasted great as always, no complaints about that. However the amount of food we got for the price we paid was awful. I believe it was £11.50 for an adults fish and chips and not £7.95 for a child’s. There really wasn’t much difference in the amount of food. Fish was the smallest iv ever had there and there was a small handful of chips. I understand prices have gone up but for the money we paid there should of been more on our plates

Today we visited Sidmouth for a few hours and we're looking for a place to eat. My mum suggested we tried the White horse as the signage outside seemed promising. Big mistake! We ordered 2x fish and chips with mushy peas and a 1/2lb cheeseburger and chips. And 3 hot drinks. Which to my astonishment came to almost £40. Oh and when you order it's not table service, they shout out your receipt number and you have to walk up to the counter and pick it up your self... My burger was dripping with fat and didn't have any extra bits like tomato or lettuce. It was just 2 greasy deep fried bits of cheap burger in a cheap bap and some horrible plastic cheese. My chips were ok but the state of the burger soon turned my stomach so those chips didn't get much of a chance. My folks did say they had nice fish and did better with the chips but their mushy peas looked like a dried out heap of dog pooh. Sidmouth has many food outlets please try somewhere else you'll probably experience better service and get more bang for your buck.

Anything but the fish is very plain bland low quality food, don't expect to see salad on anything.

The fish and chips tasted brilliantly I would definitely have It again. The service was quick and the portions were quite good. It’s a must-try.

I ordered a Burger with chips. Patty was okay, the Burger was dry. No sauce at all on the burger. Also, they didn’t put any vegetables on the burger. No lettuce, no tomatoes, no onions, no cucumbers. Nothing. Just bread and meat. Chips were good.

Arrived at 11.45 door was open but we were told they didn't open till 12am.Our Grandson has Autism and he didn't understand we couldn't go in.We seen a member of staff who said we could go and sit inside,it's nice to see people do understand Autism and go out of their way to help.We ordered 2 Pensioners specials and the rest of our Family ordered Fish and Chips.We all enjoyed the food and the place was really clean,the only thing that let it down was the owner could of been more friendly,he seemed quite miserable.

Always came here when in Sidmouth and looked forward to it this time too. But, it seems the new owners should maybe stick to serving kebabs from a van. Expensive, badly 'cooked' (if at all) and you need to check your receipt as the alleged language barrier conveniently works to their advantage when charging you. Even the gulls didn't want it.

Quick and easy, good food and portions for all the family. Great variety to choose from and becoming a must on our weekend walks along the seafront!

Food is nice but I do find the staff are a bit rude.

The language barrier and pressure to keep the que mooving the service here come across as a bit abrupt/rude. But forewarned is forearmed and I went knowing what to expect. Good fish and chips, not the greatest, but leagues away from the worst.

Met up with my cousins after many years.Chose this place at Random and it Didn't disappoint. Great value ,prompt service,pensioner's specials,good well cooked food. Only disappointment was the tea was somewhat weak.However will return and bring our own tea bags!!!!!!!!

Lovely place to eat staff opened the cafe part as they had just closed it. Fish was so nice light crispy batter would highly recommend trying 😊
