Been to Hughsies again for a few meals while on holiday in Seaton. Lovely breakfasts freshly cooked and good service. Lunches were a more difficult choice as there was a good selection and I know from experience that whatever we chose would be delicious. I have seen a number of negative comments on here but my husband and I have never had a problem. Nice clean cafe and good fresh cooked meals. We will be back again next year.

After a long rainy journey from East Sussex .we stopped at Seaton . We went into Hughsies Cafe for breakfast . What a mistake . It said on menu if you have dietary needs ask. I asked if I could have scrambled egg and tomato please instead of on toast . The most unfriendly waitress said no . I could only have scrambled egg on toast ! I then ordered a cheese omelette and had to give the chips to my partner . My partner had a cooked breakfast which I have to say was made up of cheap sausages and bacon . But charged London rates I am diabetic and have to control my carb intake . I'm not rude or fussy , but was disappointed with the attitude of the waitress. £25 on rubbish . Lots of other lovely cafes and restaurants in area . We only went in because it was clean and we were soaked . Avoid at all costs .

What a disgusting cafe. The woman who served us needs to go into some therapy. Customer service training badly needed. Because of the attitude we looked at the menu which wasn't inviting. And we were shuffed onto a table which was crammed next to another table. In order to get as many people in as possible I suppose. We just left not out type of place too. Low class wasn't clean and the staff were disgusting. How they make any money goodness knows.

I stumbled into this cafe, and the atmosphere was as lively as a library on a Monday morning. The lady behind the counter seemed to have mistaken smiles for endangered species, as not a single one graced her face. The sausage bap had the charm of a cardboard sandwich, and the taste lingered in my mouth like a distant memory of regret. The fish and chips tasted like they had been rescued from the frozen aisle of Iceland – a flavor experience akin to licking a postage stamp. This standard of fish and chips for a cafe on a seaside town is unacceptable! If misery and mediocrity had a culinary lovechild, it would be this cafe.

visited this place today for a breakfast and i dont think i have ever been made to not be welcome from the minute we all walked in, the staff or even maybe the owner made it clear they really wished they didnt get cutomers in there establishment. every thing seemed to be an efford to serve us, when ordering the lady that served us was rude and came across that she wished not to be there, when asking for simple requests for breakfast we where responded by "if i have to attitude" felt as if they didnt want customers. 100% not a very welcoming place to go will not be returning or recommending for all of us again

We like to support independent small businesses but sadly not this one. The waitress is very unhappy in her job. We felt uncomfortable seeing how she spoke to people and she made it clear everything was too much trouble. Having now read the other reviews, we realise this was not an uncommon event. As there are plenty of other places in the area to visit, we shall not be returning.

The breakfast was lovely came out hot and was overall a great breakfast however the staff are the most miserable people I have ever had the displeasure to meet the woman serving is miserable never smiles never talks , and never starts a conversation and having the positivity and politeness to ask “how are you”. It feels like you don’t Belong and they want you gone. To be honest it’s as if they are forced to work in their and they absolutely hate it. Do not go here, it’s a real shame about the staff , will not be going here again. Usually it’s the food ruining it, now it’s the staff.

Don't waste your time, money, or energy going here. The food was barely passable at best, and outright rancid at worst. Other reviews have mentioned the chips specifically being absolutely appaling, which I can attest to; out of the corner of my eye, I saw my order being put into a deep fat frier straight out of a freezer. The waitress was perhaps the most miserable individual I have ever had the displeasure of meeting and the "chef" didn't appear to be much better. Rude behaviour, a lack of temper, and a generally repulsive atmosphere seem like they're the norm here and I am convinced that the poor residents of Seaton are forever plagued by the two zombies who reside here, who could do with either a career change, retirement, relationship councelling, or ideally all three. This could explain a lot about Henry Stenner; perhaps he's related to the two ghouls who staff the place. Completely ruined our short visit to this otherwise rather pleasant seaside town. Consider it an quarantined area; avoid if at all possible.

I took my elderly parents here yesterday for lunch. The food was OK but the woman serving was unfriendly and unhelpful. There was no welcome or smile from her. I asked for a glass of tap water with my meal and was refused. When I asked why, I was told that 'it cost them'. When did a glass of water become so expensive that it cannot be given free?!? Didn't our bill of £23 cover the cost of the water and her trouble to wash one glass up. I was offered bottled water to buy but I didn't want to use single use plastic bottles. I'm not sure I've ever come across such meanness from a café owner . We're local to Seaton but we won't visit again. If you're in the hospitality business, be hospitable!

We popped in here for no other reason than to get a cuppa, a snack and use the toilet. The place was empty bar the man and woman owners. We were ignored on entry. I could sense the feeling of not being wanted and it became apparent from the way I was treated from the start. Both proprietors had faces like a bulldog chewing on a wasp. I asked the aggressive women if she had decaff coffee; my first mistake, "No! Look at the menu!" I decided from the atmosphere that when my friend got back from the toilet, we should leave. I was charged a pound, for my friend using the toilet, before she even returned. That went in the charity box and I wouldn't mind paying that, but it was the nasty way it was demanded that got me. If you are a member of the LGBT community, I would avoid this place. I can't be sure but I gave no reason to be treated like this and can only presume that they are not fond of my type. If you do go in here, be sure to wipe your feet before you leave.

Although I’m not local I’ve visited Hughsie’s on many occasions and always had great food; typical wholesome English cuisine. The casseroles that appear occasionally on the specials board are particularly warming on a cold day by the sea. I’ve read various other 1 star reviews complaining about the miserable & rude staff. During my many visits I can honestly say I’ve never been treated with anything other than kindness & politeness. Customers are asked to wear their masks before entering the cafe which we really appreciated, and covid rules are adhered to in this cafe! Whilst we were eating there was an elderly gentleman outside who had fallen, awaiting an ambulance, and the blonde lady serving behind the counter went out and gave the family chairs to sit on whilst they waited and asked them if they needed anything! There are about 50 stuck up signs all over the board / window about offers - apologies for missing the one regarding no drink orders food only at busy times…. It was just after 12 noon with empty tables inside. 4 of us sat down (we was visiting, not locals) 2 OAP and me pregnant with my partner. Was telling the blonde lady our drinks order and she snapped oooo you can’t just have drinks.. why? We questioned, she snapped getting louder “Because we’re busy and I want to make money!” We looked round as there was only one guy at one table and 2 ladies at another and us…. We questioned it jokingly and said you’re not very busy and you have no one waiting outside…. She stormed off, threw her mask on the side and threw her notepad and pen too, then hid behind the kitchen wall. So we got up and left. What a lovely way to treat your customers. If you was food only make it clear when we walk in and maybe offer to have the drinks as takeaway if your so busy?!…. At least from other reviews I can see it wasn’t just us you have been rude to!

We were looking forward to ‘Pie Night’ for a long time, since our friends had been previously. We were not disappointed! The pies were absolutely delicious - especially my fish pie. Out of this world good and hands down the BEST most scrumptious fish pie I’ve ever had. Extremely generous portions, hot veggies, yummy desserts and wonderful service. Really enjoyed ourselves and can’t wait to go back for more.

Atmosphere wasn't great as the weather was extremely wet and windy so not many customers. Food was good a the staff friendly and understanding.

Great place for Fish and Chips very good choice of other cafe type meals too. Prompt friendly service and roomy restaurant. Very good value (we ate in but takeaway available) and lovely tasty food. We'll worth a visit.

Not to be missed, this pub restaurant is fabulous. I’m of the understanding that it is under new ownership. The food is delicious and well cooked and presented. The chef here has a good eye for detail. Even the children’s food is freshly cooked and the sizes are proportionate. There is a great children’s play area outside with lots of activities for them to enjoy. I played naughts and crosses there with my son. It is located on the road between Sidmouth and Exmouth and well signposted. It’s about 10 minutes drive from the M5 junction at Exeter. It’s also good value for money and a great for families.
