We called booking a table for later that evening; the manager/owner was extremely friendly and accommodated our need for pushchair space next to our table. This is the first time we had had an evening meal out with our sleeping baby, and we are conscious and worried that establishments (and their customers) don’t want to dine next to a baby of an evening...well this was allayed when we commented we had a baby “no problem” was the instinctive reply which made us feel at ease. The food was really excellent...I had locally caught fish

We enjoyed a very nice meal in a peaceful setting at this restaurant high above Brixham harbour. The room was lit up by the evening sunshine and it was a cool, pleasant atmosphere in the main part of the room, sufficiently shaded away from the windows. The food was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. The prices were very good.

The restaurant reinforced my long held view that with few exceptions you should never eat in a hotel’s restaurant. I suppose it would appeal to an ageing, genteel clientele, but not to anyone expecting food or service other than might have been acceptable in the 1960’s. I chose the wrong restaurant based on the decent reviews here. We also chose the wrong items from the menu. I blame myself, but please do not come if your expectations are anything higher than pricey, unadventurous dullness.

We came here for our wedding anniversary as was just a few doors down from the guest house we were staying at. We were running a little late so gave them a quick call to let them know and they were totally fine with holding our table. We got a window table which looked out to the harbour which was lovely. They also gave us an anniversary card which was a nice touch. We ordered a starter and main. I had a duck pate with gluten free toast (which they were very accommodating to do). Was very tasty. Can't remember what starter my husband had but he really enjoyed it. For our main I had cannon lamb. The lamb was perfect. My husband had a fish curry which he really enjoyed. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. Definitely worth a visit.

I confess to having certain prejudices when it comes to restaurants. And I have a specific one about restaurants in hotels. It’s when they start to reset tables for breakfast, while they are in the middle of their dinner service. It just feels to be the opposite of hospitality – saying to that evening’s guests “Hurry up and go, so we can get an early finish”. That whinge aside, dinner was fine. Vegetable soup definitely seemed homemade and was really good. The other starter featured three scallops, perfectly cooked to the “still a bit translucent” stage. Each sat on a disc of “hog’s pudding”. I’d not come across this before so asked the served what it was. A bit like black pudding, he replied. Once I’d tasted it, I thought that it didn’t have the flavour of black pudding but was more like the Irish white pudding. Google later told me it is, indeed, a West Country version of white pudding (something I always think of a being a bit like haggis in flavour, albeit not as robust). Well, if the flavour of that was a bit muted, the beetroot and chilli salsa more than made up for it. Earthiness from the finely diced beetroot and a serious poke from chilli. A seafood platter was something of an assembly job but was certainly nice enough – fresh crab, smoked salmon, two versions of prawns (one shell-on, the other shell-off). It came with Marie Rose sauce, a mixed salad in a sweetish dressing and a bowl of chips. It was a light, summery plate (particularly so if you left most of your chips for your greedy companion in life to finish off. A duck breast dish was intended to be fusiony with Chinese inspired flavours. Yes, there was a hint of 5-spice in there and the plum and ginger sauce leaned towards East Asia. But it needed much more “oomph” with these flavourings. It came with a very European fondant potato and a mix of fennel, spring onion and courgette. This was all pleasant enough but, like many fusion dishes, it didn’t really come off as I’m sure the chef intended it should. But it came off well enough for me to leave a clean plate. It was another night when we didn’t fancy a restaurant’s dessert offerings, so just got the bill.

Couldn't get in beamers in Brixham but luckily got a booking at the quayside Hotel for a date with the wife. We weren't due to eat until 6 so popped in the bar for pre dinner drinks. Cracking little bar great range of beers and a lovely young lady serving. We vacated the bar walked up the stairs where the carpet was dirty and ancient. Straight away we had bad vibes. Obviously we were 1 of the first in that gave us time to look around the restaurant. The grey decor was on trend but was peeling off the walls in loads of places. The round tables were unreal for a so called upmarket restaurant. God knows how old they were but I've seen better quality in a skip. To the food. I had ham terrine with small round wafers (3) and green salad leaves. The terrine was well made and very tasty but needed more biscuits. The salad leaves were ok but needed refreshing. My wife chose the scallops. For some strange reason they came on a doilly. They were over cooked and 2 scallops for 8 pound we thought a tad expensive. Onto the mains. I chose whole sea bream with mixed veg and mini roast new potatoes. My wife had hake with similar accompaniments. Tbh the wife's was ok but not seasoned properly. Myself I had the whole sea bream. @26 quid not cheap. I thought whole sea bream came whole but obviously the head is not included. If that was straight off the harbour it wasn't September caught imo. The vegetables were freezing cold so straight back it went. On return I finally got to taste my not so whole sea bream. Fresh fish tastes of the sea. This tasted of absolutely nothing. I've tasted better fish from birds eye. It was only edible with have a cup of salt. I ate half and gave up. I called the waiter over and he told me he personally picked the fish up the day before. I enquired which boat it had come off but he couldn't remember. I use a firm called 'pesky fish' a conglomeration of six boats that sell all their fish direct to the public that cuts out the middle man on the harbour. It tells you exactly what fish each boat catches daily. Even delivered their fish is so fresh and smells of the sea. I have not as yet seen sea bream for sale on any of the boats. I asked the server had he ever used daves fish and chip shop up the road and he had. I said he needed to go up there and see what fresh fish smells and tastes like. As the bill came I wasn't charged for my nearly whole bream as expected. To finalise I'd avoid this restaurant like the plague but enjoy a drink in the bar. You'd be better off in wetherspoons.

We booked this restaurant having stayed in Brixham previously and wanting to try somewhere different. However I’m not sure we would go back but I can’t put my finger on why. The service was excellent, we had 2 young lads serving us who were super polite, efficient and friendly. The food also was superb, my partner having the seafood platter which he said was really tasty, and although the bread we were given while waiting was a bit ‘meh’ there was nothing actually wrong with it. I think it was just the atmosphere really. The room was quite hushed with soft background music and for me, the whole experience was just a bit formal and dated. But can’t fault anything from our visit at all.

We were a little disappointed by the Quayside having been recommended to go there. The restaurant itself is lovely and cosy and does not feel like you are dining in a hotel restaurant. I think with a few tweaks it could be lovely. Homemade bread was delicious but it came with packets of butter. We ordered the prawn cocktail to start which was very uninspiring- classic 1970s style in a metal dish- we were expecting a more modern take. It arrived literally a couple of minutes after ordering even before the drinks arrived. Similarly our mains arrived minutes after the starter had been taken away so the whole meal was over in half an hour- not ideal. The mussels main course was delicious but portions were tiny especially for the cost and we went away hungry. Staff were very friendly and dealt really well with a fire alarm going off during the meal. I just think a lovely restaurant could be a lot better with just a few minor adjustments, most importantly slowing the service down!

We were exited to try this highly recommended restaurant during our stay. I stress that new lockdown restrictions were applied during the week which influenced their schedule which goes a long way in making up for the rushed nature of our meal. The food was OK, but underseasoned - the crab tian was flavourless as was the hake. Scallops were buttery but again underseasoned. The service from the majority of the staff was really excellent. My main ire comes from the obvious rush to get us to leave, in order for the next diners to be served. As mentioned, Covid complications account for much of this, however we weren't made aware of this fact beforehand, and an hour and 15 minutes to finish three courses and a bottle of wine was not relaxing at all (first-world problems, I know). The bill was brought out un-asked as dessert spoons left mouths and a card machine thrust in my face. The portly waiter also had little concept of personal space, often breathing heavily (through a mask I hasten to add) right next to my ear. With clear dregs of wine left in the glass, only then was the offer made to retire to the lounge, by which point we were obviously on our way out. As feedback I would reassess food seasoning, and make sure to let your diners know well ahead of time your expectations.

We ate in the restaurant on our first night of a two night stay in the hotel. The restaurant is very nicely decorated and the tables well spaced. There are tables in the bay windows but the view of the harbour is obscured by the wall. We were dealt with swiftly and drinks and lovely fresh bread delivered to us plus an additional starter of Welsh Rarebit. We chose the Hake for our main courses. The fish was as fresh as it could be and perfectly cooked. My mother's fish was fine but mine had lots of bones; it hadn't been filleted properly. On reporting this to the waiting staff I was told that the chef leaves the filleting side of thing to the fishmonger. I am not sure why a professional kitchen would send out fish without checking it had been filleted properly. For dessert we had Creme Brule and Trifle respectively, both of which were tasty, though I think I fared better with the Creme Brule which was a nice sized portion. We were looked after well by the staff who dealt with my complaint well, and despite the issue with the fish, we enjoyed our meals. Deserving of its one rosette but no more than that.

Really cannot understand the 4 and 5 star reviews unless we just happen to have turned up on a night when the real chef and waiting staff had the night off! I booked this as a Birthday treat for my wife, having seen good things written about the chef and his amazing talent for turning out beautiful fresh fish dishes. Turned up 19:30 on a Saturday night (pre booked table) to find two groups of four already dining, but absolutely no sign of anyone to greet us or show us to our table. Managed to find a lady who was serving in the bar who invited us to choose a table, which we did. From here it all started to slightly resemble a night at Fawlty Towers. Starters were straight out of a 1970s Butlins Hotel, wine glass was dirty, waitress was a bit food stained and a bit greasy spoon cafe in manner. Ordered bottle of Chablis from their 'fine wine' page, waitress opened it, poured out a glass, slopping some on the table and slammed the bottle into its cooler. Upon realising that my wife wanted a fresh glass from the one she had used previously the waitress kindly retrieved the dirty glass that we had early swapped over from the next table and then preceded to examine two others before finding us a clean one. The 'fine wine' was anything but fine and would even go as far as to say it resembled, in taste, a cheap supermarket wine that you swear that you will never buy again. For our mains we had the seafood risotto, or rice pudding as my wife later described it to me and the Monkfish. The Monkfish, which was incredibly tough (presumably from over cooking) came with what the waitress described as a choice of sauces. Mine actually arrived with a large dish of garlic butter - yum, fine dining at its best! The waitress had now been joined by a very friendly, chatty waiter and they both made a point of coming over to check that we were happy with our meals, but when the food is just poor not off or wrong, what can you actually say that will make any difference. Not very surprisingly, we were not joined by any other diners that night and needless to say we didn't bother with desert and even left some of our £33/bottle fine wine. Altogether a real disappointment for an evening that was supposed to be a special treat. However, if a comedic dining experience is what you are looking for, perhaps you should give it a go!

Ben welcomed us perfectly and chatted to us about our trip and his story of how he moved to Brixham. He made sure we were comfortable and always had a glass of wine in hand! I cannot fault a thing. The food, wine and service was spot on! Well done Ben and the rest of the team (especially Earl)!

We enjoyed our evening in this delightful establishment, it was our second visit to this hotel and everything was as good as on our first visit. The service was very friendly and helpful. There were excellent choices on the menu and and the local seafood could not be faulted. It was well worth the distance travelled from where we lived - over a hundred miles away. We have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant to anyone who enjoys good seafood in a lovely atmosphere. You do need to book well in advance if you fancy a table near the window with views of the delightful harbour.

On our recent visit to Brixham we ate here on 2 of our three nights in this very interesting town, best visited in mid-winter when the summer crush is avoided. My wife and I shared the challenging dish 'Fruits de mere', and it occupied us well for over an hour, with its range of seafood, including lobster, king prawns, langostines, oysters and crab claws, all served on a bed of ice. A lovely dry white was a good choice from the wine list. Next night we shared a seafood medley and a flavourful seafood risotto, so we have little hesitation in saying this is a great place to eat.

I was a little dubious about the £30 per person dinner as part of a travelzoo offer but I was not disappointed. Starters were good and main meals of risotto/ steak excellent . My wife was impressed with the amount of different fish in the risotto. One small criticism was the cheese/biscuits . If I had paid over £7 for this , rather than part of offer , I would have been not happy with quality . 5 poor quality biscuits delivered a a large basket seemed a little odd , the Stilton/cheddar was nice but the Brie not ripe.

From the moment you walk through the door, the staff are there to greet you, take your coat etc., direct you to the lounge from where you are offered champagne and nibbles, to being seated in the dining room for the main event, a good start to a super night. There was horse racing between each course - such fun. At midnite the piper escorted everyone to the street to watch fireworks and sing old lang syne, on return to the dining room we were offered tatties and neeps with a shot of whisky, a delightful end to a very nice start to the New Year, there was dancing until 2pm if required. Will def return again this year a great way to celebrate - thank you.

Visited this restaurant last night with my family. Firstly the service was excellent, we were greeted by a lovely lady who made us feel extremely welcome and settled us into the lounge with menus. The restaurant wasn't busy which allowed the waitress to be attentive making the service good. The food was a bit of a mixed bag, steak and chips was excellent and my sister loved her seafood risotto however I was a little disappointed with my pork main as I found the stuffing overpowering and the textures strange, there were too any soft elements. We ordered a side of vegetables which were horrendous just sliced carrot and lumps of courgette which really didn't go with the pork! I thought it was cheeky potatoes / veg didn't come with your main already at £16/£18 a go and u had to pay £3.50 for a side of frozen peas ! The desert was the best course of the entire meal! Overall I found the dining experience enjoyable but it's slightly overpriced for the quality of food you get.

We dined in the restaurant for breakfast and had an evening meal there too. Again, the restaurant like the hotel was very clean and tidy. There was a good selection on offer for breakfast. We opted for the full English, which was fine. I do feel that cheap ingredients were possible used!!We booked to eat in the restaurant on the Weds evening. We pre-booked the lobster as per the hotels request. Spent a day really looking forward to it for it to be served and being very disappointed. Disappointing to the point that the lobster was totally inedible. I’ve eaten lobster on numerous occasions at other establishments and really enjoyed it, but on this occasion the meat was far too chewy, and the peas were like bullets. We both actually gave up on the entire dish. I’m by no means a chef, so can’t explain why it was so chewy, still it was a wasted £65. I wouldn’t rule out the hotel again as its location is perfect if you’re not wanting to drive anywhere. I would probably just stick to a tradition steak next time as you can’t really mess that up too much. As I say the restaurant surrounding were very calming and peaceful…

The food in this establishment is excellent! But the service we received was abysmal. My wife ordered a seafood risotto with mussels and prawns in their shells, no finger bowl was brought with the meal. My wife asked for one and voiced her displeasure but it still took a further 5 minutes to arrive but wit only one napkin. This was pointed out to the waitress along with the fact a side order of vegetables for my meal had not arrived. It was a birthday celebration spoilt! The manager did give us our wine FOC.

WE were staying at the hotel, so it wasnt a deffinate that we would eat there, but after a hearty walk all round Brixham, for the major regional fishing port it is, there are few fish shops in the vicinity and even fewer restaurants which are based around fish being the mnajor on the menu's. Whilst the menu caters for all tastes with a varied selection, having consumed main courses of Cod and Crab based meals, we can honestly say the service was spot on, the restaurant immaculately presented and clean, the food presented hot at your table and it tasted as expected of its AA 3* rosette status. Very enjoyable, very expensive but very worthy.

My wife and I ate at the restaurant and the food is quite poor. Not poor enough to ask for a refund as it was edible but that is the best you can say.I am vegetarian and there is a lack of options, just 1 starter and 1 main but this isn't unusually in restaurants. The main vegetarian option states parmesan in the list of ingredients. Parmesan isn't vegetarian!! I asked a member of staff whether the parmesan was vegetarian as it usual isn't and was told it was made of cow's milk but she would check with the chef. He indeed confirmed it wasn't. The chef who clearly produced the menu needs to learn what a vegetarian is, it isn't just the lack of meat and fish!!The starter was spinach and peppers with a duck egg on top (although it didn't taste or look like a duck egg I have had before). The main was a risotto but the chef needs to learn how to make a decent risotto. It was edible but I think it had more peas than rice!! I am hoping the risotto was made with all vegetarian ingredients! My wife's food was bland with a badly made watery salsa verde with her fish but she risked the pudding. A panna cotta which looked and tasted (according to my wife) as frozen yoghurt.Staff were friendly and the food served quickly. Probably too quickly as no gap between starter and main really.I know it is a hotel but staff setting up for breakfast whilst we were eating was unprofessional. Not really a romantic meal with cups clunking and a fold away table being erected in the background! It wasn't like we ate late, we were finished around 9pm!!The wine was absolutely superb though and made up for the rest of the meal.

I can't work out why I can't quite give this restaurant an Excellent rating. The menu is quite wide ranging (while an emphasis is on local fish), the presentation is excellent and there is no doubting the elegance of the surroundings or the professionalism of the staff. Maybe my taste buds were jaded as nothing quite seemed quite to live up to its promise. My crab starter was fairly tasty, if small. Great bread, made in house. My main course of monkfish made up for this by being enormous, with good gratin potatoes. The fish was not quite cooked through so was not quite as luscious and flakey as I had hoped.I really did not need a pudding but my longing for clotted cream led to the only option of a dish of (flavourless) strawberries - I should have had the clotted cream ice. cream. Devon clotted cream seems to be more solidly clotted than the much more "creamy" clotted cream I am used to from Cornwall, so the whole dish let down my expectations.I drank a modestly priced but disappointing pinot grigio and sparkling water. There are fixed price menus (which I believe change with the seasons) as well as the a la carte.Breakfasts were very good with real whole kippers as one option.

Excellent ambiance, excellent food, excellent service. We had a throughly enjoyable meal at the restaurant of this hotel. A varied menu, not too over priced, with a wide selection of wines from which to choose. My partner choose scallops to start with fish of the day to follow while I choose French onion soup followed by the confit of duck cassoulet. We were both very satisfied with our choices. For wine we chose a reasonably priced Australian Shiraz. The service and quiet attention were superb. My only criticism was the paucity of their beautiful bread during the meal.

We decided that after some very disappointing visits to the berry head hotel we would celebrate my mothers birthday at the quayside. I can honestly say that the decision was the correct one. There were a few anomalies but these could easily be overcome. The first anomaly was the barman, who later became a waiter, he had no idea at all, he did not know what wines could be served as a glass and had no large wine glasses to hand. Later when he became a waiter in the restaurant he dropped some plates. The service generally though was outstanding. The other anomaly was that when ordering your meal the price did not include veg. This seams awfully strange as your paying nearly £20 pound for just meat.Okay that's the quirky anomalies out of the way. Wine prices where pretty typical for restaurants. The food was excellent, I had a starter of ham hock and chicken terrine with piccalilli, this was very nice, followed by the Goan monkfish curry, also very good. My wife and mother Chad the chicken supreme and had a plate of mixed vegetables. They both reported that this was very good. All three of us had the chocolate cheese cake and this tasted very good. All in all it was a great meal with great service.
