The Lord Nelson is our local so an easy choice for a family get-together to celebrate our ruby wedding anniversary. We had a table for 20 and took over the skittle alley which doubles as a function room. Everyone attending had a great time and the pub and staff received lots of compliments. They are all extremely friendly and professional, and Mark’s food is excellent. Not sure we’ll make the skittles team though!

We had one of the best Sunday lunches that I’ve had in a long time. The lamb was perfectly cooked, the vegetables great and the desserts delicious. The kids had a great choice on their menu. The staff were all super helpful and the sun shone! Would highly recommend. Thank you.

We are so lucky to have the Nellie as our local. Sunday lunch we normally enjoy at home but decided yesterday to allow Mark to cook! I am awarding 3 Pirelli stars (a cut above Michelin....) It is easy to see why Mark & Helen are so busy - Jenny & I have not enjoyed a better meal. Suggest you book early!

Unfortunately I didn’t have a great experience here today and have left feeling disappointed. Upon ordering the steak, I admit, I didn’t read the menu properly and thought it came with the sauce. So when it arrived at my table without sauce I politely asked if the sauce was coming. I received an unkind glare and the statement that “obviously” the sauce is extra so you have to ask for it when ordering. A simple mistake made by myself that didn’t need quite such a hostile reaction. I asked if I could have the sauce added please and she said “obviously you’ll have to wait now while we make that up” as if it was the biggest burden set upon her. It came out mere minutes later, so didn’t seem that it was as much of a hardship as she had initially made out. Whilst I had been waiting for the sauce I had cut open my steak to discover it was medium, rather than the rare I had asked for. Usually I would hold my tongue and accept it in good British silence, however, considering I had received such a hostile reception surrounding the sauce incident I decided to be truthful when she asked how it was and said that the steak was not as rare as I had asked for. She looked at it and said “I can see pink, so it’s rare, maybe you meant to ask for blue”. I’m afraid you can see some pink even in a medium cooked steak, that in itself is not an indicator. A lot more pink was needed in order for it to be rare. I love steak. I know my steak. I do not wish for it to be suggested that I am the one in the wrong when a simple apology would have sufficed. This is just poor customer service. The over cooked steak was not the problem so much as the bizarrely confrontational attitude from the staff member. I don’t know if she was having a bad day or had decided she didn’t like me just from the look of me but it was odd to be spoken to in such a way when you’re a paying customer. She must have overheard me joke to my friends “someone’s getting a bad review!” as she came out shortly after and asked again if the steak was ok, sounding somewhat more pleasant all of a sudden. I was already eating it at this point so said “we disagree on how it’s cooked, but it’s fine.” Honestly I just wanted her to leave me alone at this point as her previous attitude had already made me feel tense and uncomfortable. When my partner went in to pay she said “I’d rather have replaced the steak than get a bad review” which just shows she had missed the point entirely. It was never about the food. It was quite offensive customer service, especially from somewhere with high prices. I wanted a treat, it was not that. I would recommended this place if you enjoy feeling tense and awkward whilst trying to enjoy a rare evening out, or if you’re happy to pretend the food is perfect so as not to hurt anybody’s fragile ego. Reading other reviews I can see this is a reoccurring problem.

Fijne eetgelegenheid als het op de weg ligt. Voor ons niet iets voor om om te rijden. Sfeer was minder en eten was gewoon goed We vonden de prijzen te hoog voor de ervaring die je ervoor kreeg. We stood at the bar waiting to get served. We couldn’t get eye contact with the lad who was behind the bar. As soon as a local walked in he went over and asked him what he wanted. Whilst pulling the chap’s pint he glanced up at me and looked guilty. We carried in waiting until the landlady was free to be spoken to.

As a group of well travelled and experienced eaters out 5 of us booked a meal local to us, we all live in Stoke sub Hamdon. 4 of us out of the five had a great meal but the reaction to mentioning the poor quality of the 5th was one of the three things that let the experience down. We booked 12:30 for 1pm and arrived on time, the pub began to fill 10 minutes or so after our arrival. Our order was taken some 20 minutes after our arrival by which time we where getting quite cold despite having a Luke warm radiator near us, luckily our coats made good knee blankets and we all had a pair of gloves. Our meals eventually arrived at 1.30pm and 4 meals where fine, the Thai curry however had none of the expected lemon grass and chilli flavour, the chicken was bland and over cooked, perhaps the curry paste had been forgotten. The kind girl who waited on us said she would get it taken off the bill. We then had coffee and dessert which again took some time to arrive so again had to get our gloves on while waiting. On paying the bill the owner refused to take the Thai curry off the bill and suggested that we where unfamiliar with a Thai curry and it was supposed to be like that…. it certainly wasn’t like any Thai curry any of us had eaten in the past, including in Thailand! Still at least we could all get out to the car and warm up.

We were looking for a family meal to celebrate an anniversary we decided on the Lord Nelson in Norton-sub Hamdon, not far from our home in Yeovil when we went for a weekday lunch visit. ‘Never had a bad pint, never had a bad meal’ follows its mention. Our group of eleven, stretching from six months old to eighty-one making a four-generational selection for our celebration. High noon on a Sunday lunchtime in early November was a arranged a few weeks prior, which was just as well as the bar and dining room soon filled not too long after we had arrived which was expected as previous experience has shown, the Lord Nelson enjoys good local support making for a genial ambience. With two grandsons with milk protein allergies, the chef came to discuss their options which assured their parents accordingly. Within a short time, we were soon being served from the comprehensive menu which was offered and ordered from the friendly waitress. Ten meals delivered hot and efficiently ranging from three roast options. I took the tasty tagine roast with apricots and almonds adorned with a generous Yorkshire pudding accompanied with a Wadworth’s ale. Extra veg was available for hungrier members of our party. The children had fish and chips as well as sausage and chips and chicken nuggets to accommodate our grandson’s allergy, none of which would have gone amiss as an adult serving. Between main course and dessert being served, our grandchildren were beginning to get a little bored, so we asked if there was any paper for them to draw on which was answered with a large tin of coloured pencils and a handful of A4 paper much to the children’s delight. Desert selections were made from the blackboard, most of which were home-made, and all the better for it all of which made a good rounding-off of our family celebration.

First impression, it’s a lovely village pub with atmosphere. We easily booked a table for lunch for six people on a Saturday lunchtime; the pub was busy but our order was taken quickly and the food arrived within a very reasonable time. Five of the meals were very good, the “boneless rib” was not rib, it was two thin slices of belly pork with a dollop of bbq sauce which I couldn’t eat, very disappointing. I tried to speak to a member of staff but she wasn’t prepared to discuss it, she insisted it was rib, for this reason we wouldn’t go back which is a shame.

The pub itself is a pleasant building and the staff were all lovely. The menu seemed to be trying too hard and was not well executed. The fish was very greasy as was the burger. The cheese on the burger was too strong and overwhelmed it and the accompanying onion relish was not nice. The yorkshires with the roasts tasted like they’d been sitting around. Our deserts were good but the persistent barking of the dog with another party ruined our experience and we were all relieved to leave

This is my usual once monthly meal trip out and when we walked through the door the landlady apologised there was no lamb shank. That she recognises me from one month to the next is how a landlord should be. I had the Sunday carvery instead which was as good as always. A month ago I visited for lunch together with a couple of grumpy old git friends for one of our bi-monthly setting the world to rights meals. The last time we visited we eulogised about the place, everything was outstanding, this time there was a distinct lack of all the attention to detail that had been there in the meal last time. The meal was summed up by the vegetables, gone were the crisp vibrant accompaniments of last time, what was presented was a splat of something, possibly 'au gratin' but who knew. Maybe it was the slight chill or the lack of the log fire, I hate to say it but I am not sure. The staff were as attentive and efficient as could be wanted, this really was about uninspiring food. I love sausage and mash but I couldn't finish the meal. I hope it was an aberration, we cannot afford to see our great pubs going backwards to the very ordinary. I like my heroes and hope the Lord Nelson remembers it's proud name and cooks accordingly.

Advice.....don't order the Sunday roast specials on Sunday evening. Husband and I ordered the roast lamb and the meat was so overcooked that the outer CRUST was inedible. The vegetables served with it were cooked to an unidentifiable mush. Another in our party ordered a steak - rare which was served overcooked. She advised the server who by her facial expression thought she was being unreasonable, but the chef came to her, took her overcooked steak and returned with one which was properly cooked. Four adults and three children is often not a recipe for an enjoyable Sunday lunch out, but The Lord Nelson seems to cope admirably. We arrived in good time, and the adults shared two roast lamb dishes, which come with roast potatoes, vegetables, and a carving knife and fork to deal with the lamb. It was excellent, and thoroughly enjoyed by all. The children's menu is good, with generous portions, and although the quantity defeated the smaller one, the meal was thoroughly enjoyed. Visited our local establishment for the first time since returning from our holidays in France. Tuesday and Wednesday are both steak nights, so we decided to walk down the road, rather than having to cook and wash up. As alway, the welcome at this inn is extremely warm and friendly. A further attraction is a bottle of wine, on this occasion, Merlot to accompany our meal was an extra incentive. The quality of the steak, its cooking and presentation was, as ever, first class. We have never had a poor meal whenever we have visited the Nelson during the 20 years years we have been living in the area. The Nelson offers exceptional value for money and we feel privileged to be able to enjoy such an amenity within walking distance.

Had lunch there today (Weds). Wide choice, excellent pub food. We took the £12 for three courses. Reasonable sized portions meant we could tackle a pudding without feeling too full or too guilty! Very friendly atmosphere with courteous service. Well done.

I am surprised by all the positive responses here as my experience was totally different, don't get me wrong this is a nice little dog friendly pub for a drink, but I have just returned home from there after stopping off for a bite after walking the dog with my husband. I am so disappointed that I had to write my experience straight away. My husband ordered the steak, at £17 he expected something fairly decent, what he got was dry and only 3/4 was edible ( good job we had the dog), to be honest I have purchased better quality meat at Aldi, the chips we of the oven variety and also dry, and the blue cheese sauce he ordered just never arrived. I on the other hand ordered the Paella (traditional) well for £15 I got 3 prawns, 4 tiny clams, 3 mussels, a small portion of very wet rice with several pieces of chicken and a few slices of not very good chorizo, thrown in with that was a glass of 'Sangria' which it wasn't, it was in fact overly sweet fruit juice and lemonade. With a couple of drinks the whole disaster cost £40 what a waste of money. We are fairly local people so could have returned often, but needless to say we won't be doing so, not to eat anyway.

I was born and brought up in London and have eaten in pubs across the UK. I have never reacted to pub grub the way I did today. From the engaged and keen staff to the simple furniture and uncluttered bar the Lord Nelson Inn welcomes your in. The gentle background music and attentive but not intrusive people moving around with food and drinks speak of understated efficiency.Everything before is of no use when the food is a let down, The food at the Lord Nelson Inn is everything but a let down, The food is simple unpretentious and done the way pub grub should be done everywhere, Think of the best food your granny every cooked. it does not need to be over garnished or garnished at all. You would sing to yourself or make involuntary yummy sounds when you ate - that is what you get from the lunch time meals from the set 2 or 3 course menu. The menu changes frequently but the intent and delivery are always the same. Keep it simple to get excellence, seems to be the motto. Courgette, apple and Camembert soup with a slice of fresh bread and butter. Rare beef with hot jersey royals with melted butter and a simple rocket and cherry tomato salad with vinaigrette dressing. Orange and chocolate cheesecake with cream - I don't eat desserts but tried this on the back of the first 2 courses - heaven on a plate. You can do all of it at home but you need to eat at the Lord Nelson inn to enjoy each and every dish done as you wished you could make the dishes. .

If ever we treat ourselves to a Sunday roast out we always visit The Lord Nelson, we've never had anything other than a wonderful experience, the food is unbelievably good, unlike anywhere else, I don't know how they do it but everything is perfect, staff are really friendly, polite and professional particulary Helen who always remembers us and takes care of making sure that we are looked after, as a coeliac I always get very anxious when eating out but you can be sure that you'll be well cared for here. There is an extensive menu, a choice of gorgeous roasts on a Sunday, Specials board, beautiful surrounding countryside, cozy, inviting and comfortable interior. ....what else would you need, pop in , you'll never be disappointed.

My husband and I visited The Lord Nelson last night and after having the most fabulous meal I felt I really needed to write a review. Firstly, this is such a warm and friendly village pub. You are made to feel extremely welcome. The food we had last night was simply outstanding. My husband had the starter special Korean pork bun. It was simply exceptional. My starter of belly pork was also superb. I then had the duck breast for my main and he had the lamb...again both dishes were 1st class. I cannot recommend this beautiful Somerset pub enough...well worth a visit. Brilliant.

This was our first visit with friends. We received a friendly and relaxed welcome. Loved the ambiance - what a proper pub should feel like. As it was Tuesday it was steak night so we two men indulged our carnivorous nature whilst the ladies chose the alternative chicken dish. £30 for two including a bottle of wine, this would be interesting. Well, wow! Good portions all round. The steaks were nicely cooked and well presented with scrummy chips, a good portion of mushy peas, grilled vine tomatoes and a large mushroom. Excellent. The ladies were equally pleased, pronouncing their chicken delicious. We asked for a bottle of rose and one of white - no problem. House wines can be a disappointment, but not in this case. Both were very palatable and enjoyed by us all. We were really too full to tackle the desserts on offer so indulged our gluttony with ice cream. Again, a pleasant surprise as it came with two wafer biscuits and good sized portions. Really good value. They even gave us a shot glass full of smarties with the bill. Quirky and nice. So, all in all - a very good evening. Thanks. We will definitely be back.

Visited in the evening mid week with 8 work colleagues, good range of beers although ltd truly locally produced presumably down to brewery rules, wad worthy 6x and IPA both on tap and very well kept. The food was excellent, portion size spot on. Good range of Lovington ice cream perfect for desert, sold by the scoop so you could be as greedy as you wished. The staff were very helpful and accommodating. If you want a traditional pub with good food and drink this has to be near the top of the list.

Twice we've eaten here, but each time the first course was so delicious we ordered a second. This meant we didn't leave till too late to go much further. We would go well out of our way to bring friends or family here. Wood stove in the middle adds to the welcome of the staff.

The visit exceeded our expectations. Popped in for lunch. A good selection on the menu and specials, finally settled for the "2 courses for £8.00". The food soon appeared and was delicious. Throughout our visit the service was excellent, and we were made to feel very welcome. Will definitely revisit.

Lovely quaint village pub with rustic decor is deceptive at first glance. Lovely beer garden at rear, frontage seating for people watching and olde worlde village pub interior. Used by locals and visitors alike, no airs and graces here- just friendly people doing their best to enhance your drinking/dining experience. The food is varied, theme nights and takeaway available. Most dishes on offer could be made gluten free which pleased the wife, roast breast of duck being her meal of choice. I opted for saddle of lamb and neither were disappointing. The main courses were cooked to order, presented exquisitely and tasted wonderful. It almost seemed wrong to follow with a dessert but we succumbed to temptation and tried the rhubarb eton mess and the whisky, date and pecan brioche pudding, both tasted divine. Excellent service from both bar and waiting staff. We will definitely be returning to this lovely hostelry in due course. Ps promise not to knock over the smarties next time.Steve & Karen

This village pub is a little cracker. Lovely atmosphere, great food and nice real ales. What's not to like. We had a sandwich and ciabatta, both with plenty of lovely fillings, fantastic chips and a nice side salad. Superb and great value. It's well worth peeling off the A303 and driving the 5 minutes to Norton Sub Hamden and seeking out The Lord Nelson. Highly recommended.

We're a bit bored or pretentious gastro pubs locally which charge an extra £5 for triple cooking and reducing things that don't taste any different! We'd already walked in and out of two pubs when we happened upon this little gem! A proper pub with a great atmosphere, lovely staff and really really good food which was great value. I love this pub and am so pleased to have found it! Superb

Best gammon that me and the missus has ever had. Nice buttery roasties and plenty of vegetable options. Plenty of seating and car parking spaces. Nice large outside area for summer time food and drink. Staff were friendly and reasonably priced food. Downside was that the carpets needed a really good clean, but I'm sure that this will be seen too in the not too distant future.

It's a pub that serves perfectly decent food. But it's not a "gastro-pub" (whatever that is). You can go in and be sure to get a moderately good meal for a moderate price. Nothing fancy. No pretentions of being anything it isn't. Just a country pub catering for a decent honest local clientele. And that's a worthwhile and valuable service I appreciate.

I genuinely have to applaud the staff. This chain has a particular modus operandi, which is a challenge in itself. Being both affordable and hospitable to the masses in tandem is no easy task. The Cerdic management can be commended on those it employs, namely those that stand up rigorously to the extreme varied volumetric patron numbers and the pressures that this produces, especially given the size of the establishment. It is not for me when the 'masses frequent on their evening of well deserved leisure' but outside these times, it serves my purpose.

Fab lunch at the Prince of Wales today. Confit duck leg with dauphinoise potatoes, and venison faggots with mash were our main courses. Both dishes were tasty, filling and cooked perfectly. Puddings were good too; ginger treacle tart and apple pie with custard, not overly sweet and decent size. Thank you
