What a wonderful pub! Easily missed, since off the main road, but so pleased we found it. Cosy, rustic pub serving excellent wholesome and tasty food. Lunch time only menu and with only a few choices, but every dish is an absolute joy. The service of the great food and drinks is also superb, with plenty of choice of local ciders and beers. Such a rarity to find such a real gem these days!

This undeniably unique pub has everything to offer, including glorious home cooked food. We selected their lasagna and cottage pie meals off the lunch menu. Best food gamble one will ever have as the odds are always stacked in your favour. Enjoy your visit!

If Carlsberg did rare roast beef sandwiches…. A proper pub with no piped music or fruit machine. If you want something out of Ideal Home go elsewhere. It has a rugged charm which few can match.

The Crown is local to us but we wanted our visiting friends to experience the quirky and unique atmosphere plus the fantastic food. Basic but never ever fails to impress. We ordered 2 Farmers and 2 mixed Cheese platters. Wow was the reaction 🤩 if you want a ploughman’s that delivers quality and quantity this is the place to go. Been visiting for many years and The Crown never fails to deliver.

What a great little water hole. Can’t praise this place highly enough. We got there at 11:45 and the queues were starting to form already. The staff are friendly and very patient. The queues they have to deal with are extraordinary but everyone gets the same level of attention and detail. The pub itself is a kick back in time. No creature comforts or tv screens just a great establishment. Can’t recommend this highly enough. Well done to all concerned!!

Fantastic little pub with keeping the traditional features. The food is fantastic with a good variety. The plate size are very good portions. Traditional beers, ciders and other drinks. Very friendly staff. Average food wait time was only 15-20 mins and that was when it was busy. Outside seating available. Car parking at the pub.

What a lovely little pub!! If you want a quintessentially British pub to stop for lunch or a pint this is the place. Rather than all the OTT gastropubs these days. They only serve food during lunch hours (I think) it’s all proper English pub grub simple stuff: jacket potatoes, sandwiches, meat platters, ploughman’s & hot selections like cottage pie/cauliflower cheese served with massive chunks of bread. All really reasonably priced. It’s so tucked away though and easy to miss!! So be careful. Was very busy when we went in, and it’s tiny too so make sure you plan your trip or you might be disappointed. It’s a lovely old pub with warm fires, outside loos 😂 and proper old style decor. Only wish we lived closer as we’d be regulars!

Tired of gastropubs decorated in Farrow & Ball Elephant's Breath paint that serve overpriced craft ale and Slow cooked hen's egg with pickled turnip flowers? So am I... so pop along to this wonderful real pub that will remind you of what country pubs used to be like. Great real ales straight out of the barrel and local ciders that aren't fizzy and made in God Knows Wheresville and as for the food... awesome Ploughman's and humongous sandwiches as well as all the old pub grub favourites and all at very reasonable prices. A true gem of a pub with friendly staff and locals with 'proper' dogs that will remind you of country pubs from yesteryear. Simply the best pub I've visited in a very long time.

The Crown Inn is a welcoming rustic country pub in beautiful countryside, free of unnecessary, pretentious and costly 'gastro' frills and pretensions. It is crowded and cosy, (as in they actually light the log burner when it's cold rather than advertising 'blazing log fires' that remain unlit or untended and smouldering), when the weather is, well, British and in fine weather it has every kind of outdoor space families, couples, solo travellers, dogs, horses, bikers and walkers could wish for. The menu is short and comprises the best home made classic pub food including puds. You will not go hungry! In these difficult times for the hospitality industry The Crown Inn continues to achieve the holy trinity of excellent quality, value for money and service.

We visited 3 times for lunch while staying in the area - and as said before - you have to seek it out. We were recommended it by a member of staff in another local pub and we're so glad we were. My husband and I were discussing what makes it so much of a draw - there was a struggle for tables every time we went - you can't reserve and it could get a bit cut and thrust as people leave and others jump into their seats real quick - but if you are prepared to wait you can usually get something- eventually! We decided it is a combination of really good tasty homemade food - smallish unchanging menu but everything you could want for a fair price - and all delicious that we tried - not a chip in sight - just delicious hunks of homemade bread and butter to accompany. Can highly recommend the cauliflower cheese and the beef casserole - both perfect - but everything we saw coming out of the kitchen looked lovely Secondly - we thought the atmosphere was perfect - log fires, just the right amount of neglect to the very old building and local people in the middle bar just in for a drink and a chat - even with in-comers Good food, log fires and good atmosphere - winning combination. Really loved it all Incidentally - when I read some of the reviews complaining about the staff - I wondered if they were reviewing the same pub we were in as we thought they were all - young and more mature - lovely and friendly You must go - oh and the puddings were homemade and lovely too

We found this pub on a recent holiday as it was a short walk from where we were staying. We loved the look of it and decided to pop back with some local friends for lunch a couple of days later. What a mistake... We all ordered lunch and a couple of rounds of drinks - no complaints there, but were astonished as we were about to leave to be shouted at in front of other customers by a couple of very rude female staff for 'letting our [friends] toddler ruin their lawn'. He had in fact been picking up and playing with a few handfuls of dry mud from one of the many holes in the already extremely parched and patchy grass. I asked the lady who created the fuss whether she had children, to which she replied 'no, I have dogs and I keep them under control' (we saw them in cages at the back of the pub on our way out...) It seems it is not just the decor and ambience of the pub that is old-fashioned/completely out of date. I feel I should make special mention here of the young staff members who served us, who were nothing but polite and courteous. It strikes me that the older staff / management could learn a few lessons from their younger colleagues! Appearance: 5 Food: 4 Attitude: -10

This is potentially one of the best country pubs we’ve visited. It is full of character, jovial locals, lovely garden and utterly fantastic food at a reasonable price. Kitchen staff and young servers were lovely and attentive. However, during a second visit for lunch we were verbally attacked by a rude member of the management staff. While we were getting ready to leave our friends 3 year old boy had picked some dirt out of a hole that was already there by a bench and was putting it into his little toy train. She could have politely pointed out that she wasn’t happy with this, but chose to scold and shame us. Then a second lady came out and also verbally attacked us, saying that we should control our kids like she controls her dogs. We get the impression that dogs are most welcome, but children and families are not, so we won’t be returning. If you do go with children, make sure you chain them to a bench, or keep them locked away in a dingy corner of the pub (like they do with their dogs). This should be a 5 star review, but came away feeling sickened and upset. Such a shame this beautiful place is being run by people who are clearly in the wrong trade.

Where to start ? First of all you’ll never happen across this village pub. It’s in the middle of nowhere, but not too far from the A38 at Churchill. As you drive by it doesn’t look like a pub. Think country cottage. So that’s the hard part. Finding the place. There is some parking outside, but they have a huge car park just down the road in a field. Once you get to the pub you find a few tables outside on the patio at the front. Wander through the pub to the garden and they have dozens of tables. Now for the menu. It’s all on a blackboard on a wall inside. Fairly limited, but it’s all you’d want from a country pub. Now for the best bit. You have got to try their rare beef ploughman’s. It is simply sublime. Go find the pub and get the rare beef ploughmans. Highly recommended

Visited after walking on three late afternoons; including a Saturday; as the pub was on our way back to our holiday cottage. We knew that food was only served lunchtimes and when we did pass one lunchtime the gardens were packed with people. The only comment I could make about food issues would be hygiene related. When we visited the second time and third time, plates were still on the tables outside, long after service had finished. On the second visit, the door to the kitchen area (enters out into the garden area) was left open for hours and dirty plates were piled up by the sink and anything and everything could crawl or fly into the kitchen! Can't say we received a welcome on any occasion we went to the bar, hence the "average" rating.Toilets are accessed via outside.

Having been introduced to (and fallen in love with) The Crown a couple of years ago, I immediately thought of it when arranging a half-wayish meet up of 6 family members, 4 of whom lived in Glocestershire and 2 in Exeter. I rang to reserve a table which they don't generally do, but as we were travelling fair distances, they agreed to do it if we promised to arrive around midday. When we got there the reserved table was in the less characterful end looking at the back of the log burner which was a slight disappointment, but I have to say they were very accommodating and patient while we looked for one that was more what we wanted and also large enough for us all. Once this was resolved, the whole lunch experience was as lovely as we remembered with excellent, friendly service, good choice of drinks and delicious food. It was the first visit for three of our party and all loved the place and would visit again! A big thank you to all at The Crown for your part in a happy family gathering!

No card payment facilities and no music or chips either which is fine by us. The staff are always friendly and efficient even when the place is heaving on sunny weekend lunchtimes for example.

Outside, you are hard pressed to see the pub sign, because the Crown is mainly known by word of mouth. Entering, there is a little window in the wall of the Crown showing that it is (partly) made of straw, as cob walls always were. There are two wood fires on the go, and the lighting is low - just candles in one section, enough light to see happy smiling faces, but not much else. The decor is not artfully distressed, it is just looks as if it has been left to its own devices over the passing centuries. There was a piano, but it died the death, and the keys have been stuck to the wall in memorial. What does not need a memorial is the all-round friendliness of the staff and inhabitants. Genuine warmth and proper smiles. The food is good warm home made belly filling fare, choose the casserole if you are cold tired and hungry, or the cauliflower cheese if you don't like eating anything that has a face. Above all, the drink is proper drink as ever was; great local ales and beer, but it is the cider that brings them down from London in a coach, to spend a few hours sampling the spiritual essence of the Somerset apple crop (often enough it has been rightly wassailed in January) and then counted back into the coach at the end of the evening. One word of warning though - if you are not familiar with real rough cider, do not assume that it is equal to beer, pint for pint. Your head may tell you so as it slips down, but your legs will tell a different story when you at last, with great reluctance, have to leave the Crown, one of the greatest and best living havens of Somersetness in the world.

Having read all the reviews of this fantastic pub we had planned to come here for drinks and dinner while staying nearby. We headed up and had a few drinks, but had been prewarned that they do not serve food in the evening. It was a real shame as we were looking forward to it and the menu sounded fantastic. It was a very friendly atmosphere, and the selection of drinks and the prices were brilliant.

(Fairly) deep in the Somerset countryside, with not even a sign outside, but easily found by the number of cars outside. Very special inside with a dark, old-fashioned interior - don't go looking for a Wetherspoons-style pub! Excellent choice of beers, ciders and wine. Good choice of home-made foods at lunchtime. On a blistering hot day in June a pint of Bounders was cold and refreshing, and the Cheddar and Ham ploughman's lunch was delicious. Sat in the garden, which was quiet and cool. Definitely recommended.

Dirt parking lot filled, but plenty of tables open in the back. Looked like the whole village was there. Good choices of food and plenty of drinks. The chilli, lasagna and ploughman's lunch were great tasting with large portions. Kids were playing everywhere, safe from the cars. Lovely afternoon lunch!

I’ve been aware of the Crown for some years and so when I was down on Mendip with a friend decided we should walk the 6 miles from our accommodation. It was well worth the effort. This must be one of the best pubs in Somerset. I can’t see how anyone could fault it. There was a fabulous selection of beers. After trying 4 different pints we came to our senses and started our walk back.

We have been coming to this pub for years! It doesn't change much. It's best qualities are it's range of Real Ales, although we are dissapointed that the choices have dwindled in recent years, because of the change in management. You used to be able to go there at weekends and there would always be different guest ales every week. The food is basic baked potatoes with fillings, bowl of chilli concarne, or lasagne etc choice of well made sandwiches.Stone floors and wooden settles are the furnishings. The walls, ceilings are grubby, from the open fire, but this is originality preserved. All seem welcome, dogs and hikers etc. Toilets are in the garden.Downside, it gets very busy to the point that drinkers spill out onto the front garden, and sometimes it gets difficult to park and you have to park in a field opposite.

This pub has not changed in years. It serves quality ales with quality pub food. Ploughmans are excellent and they usually have some hot dishes like chilli con carne. The inside has some small tables around the bar with a log fire - a little cramped but that adds to the charm. Outside there is a patio and large garden. The choice of cider was disappointing, especially considering the number of cider farms in the area, mainly filtered keg variety with no real ones on offer.

This is one of Somerset's most unspoilt and unpretentious pubs . Cosy in winter and idyllic and tranquil in summer. It's a little hard to find as it is not sign posted but a google of the postcode and sat nav will get you there. A must for the real ale and cider drinker as there is a vast variety to choose from.

If you are looking for a top quality local pint of either beer or cider in a traditional English pub with a great atmosphere then you won't find a better example than this. Friendly staff, good simple lunchtime food, flag stone floor, candle lit tables, roaring log fires, spacious garden and "rustic" outdoor toilets, .If you are looking for bright lights, plastic wipe down tables, tasteless food and no atmosphere then I believe there is a MacDonalds in Weston!Note: This is a traditional English pub and NOT a restaurant. Cash only bar, no cards taken.

Great little traditional English country pub. Tucked out of the way, but less than half a mile from a busy road. Good food at reasonable prices.

Love this place so much. Found it about a month ago when I googled pubs in Churchill as I was driving through there to go back to Brent Knoll and now I go there every weekend. It's a small, very old, thick stone walled pub set off the main road up a small lane. Lovely log fires and old quirky furniture, but best of all is the food. Everything is homemade, even the bread which comes out in thick doorsteps with slabs of butter. Perfect for sandwiches and with soups. The chilli has a nice kick to it, not like most run of the mill pubs and my partner has it every week. I've had jacket potatoes, sandwiches and the cauliflower cheese with blue cheese and it has all been outstanding. The staff are very friendly too and make you feel welcome. Can't recommend this place enough, although I'd rather keep it to myself so it doesn't become too popular :)

Locale molto tipico frequentato solo da inglesi. Il mio piatto preferito è la home pie veramente buona e saporita e anche le jack potate sono abbondanti e buone. Senza dimenticare i dolci fatti in casa freschi e tradizionali. Quindi se cercato del buon cibo da accompagnare con ottimo sidro in un classico e pittoresco Pub inglese sicuramente dovrete fare una sosta al The Crown Inn! Veramente consigliato e con un ottimo rapporto qualità prezzo!

Out for a walk we chanced upon the Crown Inn at Churchill. From then outside you wouldn't know this was one of the best eateries on our doorstep. The bar offers various ales and ciders but the highlight on a cold and damp Sunday was the beautiful log fire with a couple of local dogs steaming quite happily while they snooped. The menu is not extensive but what is on offer is delicious. I had a beef and Stilton sandwich which was like a doorstep, the combination worked perfectly. The cauliflower cheese with ham looked superb and I am assured it tasted as good as it looked and the cheese ploughman's was the best looking plated ploughmans I have seen in a very long time. I am somewhat loathed to write any more because it's a find I don't really want to share!

We have been going to the Crown for about 20 years and it usually is a great experience. The food is great and the lack of music and TVs etc is very welcome. The staff are lovely. However, on the last few occasions, the evening has been ruined by children with their noisy screen games and the sound is really annoying. I had hoped the Crown was one of the last few places where adults could enjoy a relaxing evening out.

We patronized several nice pubs on a recent stay in Somerset and Wales. The Crown is the king. This is a tiny place with friendly staff and clientele. We found it by invitation while eating in the nearby Nelson's Arms carvery. The Crown was a fun pub in a great old building. They had about 16 "Guest" beer kegs in addition to the regular assortment of beers and ales. The proprietress was happy to talk to us about the bitters, lagers and ciders and offered us samples to get our selections right. I highly recommend the Crown as a place to come spend the rest of your GBP before flying out of Bristol.

We've been going to the Crown for years and it hasn't changed a jot. Neither should it as it is exactly what a country village pub should be. Nestled in the beautiful lower hills of the Mendips it is ideally situated for a post-walk or mountain bike pint, or you could just enjoy the garden if the weather is fine. Great local ales and cider, open fires in the winter months, stone flags throughout, and a cosy atmosphere that reminds me of Bilbo's Hobbit Hole. Superb no-nonsense food. Crusty freshly baked bread accompanying either a hearty chilli or cauliflower cheese, or doorstep sandwiches or ploughman's to die for. Perfectly named, the Crown is king of the pubs. Enjoy!

We stopped off here last week for lunch on the way to drop relatives off at Bristol Airport (its only two minutes off the main road). We wanted to take them to a traditional pub before they went home. What can I say? This place ticks all the boxes - great homely food - Chilli, Beef Casserole etc etc, great knowledgeable staff, great selection of beer / cider, friendly customers (who are more than happy to assist you choose your tipple!), log fire and rustic surroundings. This is THE country pub to visit - too bad its 70 miles away from where we live!!

Lovely place to stay before we travel to Lisbon tomorrow. We have early flights from Bristol airport. Our welcome when we first arrived was first class. Our bedroom is great. Our evening meal in the pub downstairs was first class and the Supper Club deal is really good. The food and presentation was superb and the service we received from everyone was absolutely fantastic.
