Lovely pub with very friendly staff. Expensive drinks but the food was lovely. Just one thing which seems to be happening in more and more eating venues was the American style 10% gratuity payment added to the bill!? By adding this cost without the initial agreement of the customer, is designed to make it just too embarrassing to challenge when paying! I personally would rather leave a cash tip for the staff if they serve you well! So basically add on 10% when you look at the advertised prices in this pub!

Lovely place to stay before we travel to Lisbon tomorrow. We have early flights from Bristol airport. Our welcome when we first arrived was first class. Our bedroom is great. Our evening meal in the pub downstairs was first class and the Supper Club deal is really good. I can’t recommend The George highly enough for their outstanding food and drink and also the exemplary staff. The atmosphere was great too and I guess a change of management must have occurred as you can quite clearly see that attention to detail has improved greatly since I last had a meal there. I thought the pumpkins were a lovely touch along with a “what’s on” board highlighting forthcoming events! A great place to have a drink by the cosy open fire or a really decent meal in the restaurant!

In my last review a couple of months ago we only stayed at the George but did not eat, this time we booked the private dining room for a family event and they did not disappoint. Thank you gents for making what could be a difficult day into a seamless, professional, friendly affair which was very much appreciated by all. The food was delicious, well cooked and served beautifully. Our second overnight stay and the accommodation did not disappoint either, just wish I had time to enjoy the stand alone bath which looked fab.

I recently dined at The George at Backwell near Bristol and, I must admit, my experience was mixed. The place has a certain charm that seems to captivate the locals, but I left feeling somewhat underwhelmed. Firstly, The George has an air of sophistication that can come off as a bit pretentious. The decor is certainly stylish, but it feels like they might be trying a bit too hard to impress. It lacks the warm, welcoming atmosphere that I prefer in a classic, English establishment. The service, while polite, felt somewhat distant. The staff were professional, but I sensed a lack of genuine warmth and hospitality. It seemed more about maintaining a certain image rather than making guests feel truly comfortable. When it comes to the food, the menu is quite ambitious with a range of dishes that sound enticing. Some of the items I tried were enjoyable, but others missed the mark. The focus on presentation sometimes overshadowed the actual flavors, leading to a meal that didn't quite justify the high prices. Speaking of prices, dining at The George is not a budget-friendly experience. The cost is quite steep, and while some might argue it's worth it for the atmosphere and culinary ambition, I personally found it a bit too much for what was delivered. Despite my reservations, it's clear that The George has a loyal local following. There must be a certain appeal that resonates with the community, even if it didn't fully resonate with me. In summary, The George at Backwell is a place that certainly has its admirers, and I can see why it might appeal to some. However, for me, the combination of high costs and a somewhat pretentious vibe means I’m unlikely to return. It’s worth a visit if you’re curious, but keep in mind that it might not be to everyone’s taste.

Arrived after dinner on a Saturday evening yet the chef still put together a simple dinner of chicken Terrine, piccalilli pickles and fresh bread and a smoked salmon, capers and cress also with bread. Stayed last night . We had early flights out of Bristol airport . Stairs , are narrow steep and spirally . If you have mobility issue’s this place is not for you . While staff helped us up with our suitcases , getting them down at 3am for an early flight , was a nightmare . Food , a very average burger with a tiny portion of chips £16:50 . Then my wife had a Sundae which was supposed to be coconut nut ice cream , cherries and waffle . What actually turned up was vanilla ice cream , with ice crystals and some rather sorry cherries a strawberry cut in half on top . Harvester looks good compared to this . It went back . The room was small airless and had a very noisy mobile aircon unit in it . Not a great nights sleep . The toilet/ wet room . Don’t plan on going to the loo after you have showered , not well thought out . Will we return , no .

New Managers in the last 3 weeks. Yesterday was a great evening. Encouraged by the offer of a free drink, the pub was packed with everyone enjoying themselves. They also produced very tasty free bar snacks. This is all very encouraging, and I think we, at last, "have our George back" after the major problems of the last few years. Probably best to ignore reviews dated before early June, as they will refer to the era before these new managers. Good luck to James & Padraig. We hope all goes well from now. Robin Lambert.

The pub itself is lovely, really nicely decorated and welcoming. It was moderately busy and the atmosphere was good. We popped in for dinner at 19:45 on Friday night and were asked to order as quickly as possible as “the chefs didn’t want to work” so we ordered straight away at the bar. I have to say for £16, my chicken burger was absolutely terrible. I’ve attached a photo - a dry bun, 1 bit of deep fried chicken and a little bit of pickled red cabbage, clearly out of a jar, which had been described as ‘pickled cabbage slaw’ on the menu but was so vinegary. Not even a little bit of lettuce, and the smallest dollop of BBQ sauce which was also incredibly vinegary. Honestly terrible food for that price. A McDonalds chicken burger would have about 100x more love and care put into it, which is really saying something. Im more than happy to pay £16 for a burger - every business has to make money and the overheads in hospitality are massive - but I do expect it to be at least half decent.

We arrived on a Sunday before an early flight Monday. We were told when we went to the bar that they didn't serve food on a Sunday evening and had tried to contact us. We later saw that they had called the day before (while we were mid marriage ceremony) so we didn't pick it up, no email or any other calls. Although online it says they close 8/9 the owner locked up at 7, and I've never seen a pint of Guinness poured so badly in my life. What a complete shambIes. We decided to visit for dinner and a drink with our two young children, on our way to a friend's house. I went and ordered a gin and lemonade, the lady poured the gin then said "we don't have any ice" not a problem, she then informed me that the lemonade was off also. Great start, we asked if they were serving food. We were told 17.00 and the lady handed us some menus, so we decided to wait and play some games. After over an hour I went to order food and was informed they weren't serving until 18.00 now. This was too late for us, luckily we found somewhere else more organised to eat. The staff didn't sound like they had a clue what was going on.

I asked again about the stuffing and he went off only to return and say the same thing. We were still charged full price despite them offering something on the menu that just isn't included. Some bits of food had been left out plus an urn for hot drinks. This was in a side room/conservatory....the main doors to the pub were chained up and padlocked. The impression is that of a business that has been shut down/ building repossessed by the bank or something and existing b&b bookings had to be honoured.....all a bit strange. MORE AT TripAdvisor

We've been visiting The George for many years, through the glory days when Anthony and his team ran an impeccable establishment, then through the dismal collapse in standards when Punch Taverns took over, and more recently the significant improvement in quality which saw us returning as regulars. But if the latest visit is any indication, things are on the slide again. When we arrived for Sunday lunch, we were told that a large party had been booked in, so we were put in the noisy family room at a corner table near the toilets and told what was not available on the menu (pretty much everything apart from the roast). Drinks arrived slowly, followed very soon afterwards by our meals. We both had beef. One of us found the beef so tough that we couldn't cut it, while mine was so rare that it was almost raw. I normally like my beef rare, but this was leaking blood all over the rest of the food, so we complained. First they cooked my beef for a bit longer but when I too found it hard to cut, we asked for replacements. The serving staff, who were extremely young and not the same staff who had been working there recently, were very nice and did what they could. They offered us complimentary drinks, but we'd only just received our drinks anyway, so we declined. The replacement meals were ok, but that's the best you can say. The beef - a single slice, more like a minute steak - was still tough, the roast potatoes were tiny , the carrots an absolutely microscopic portion, the gravy thin and watery. The rest of the plate was filled with a horrible mix of cabbage and peas which neither of us ate. The cauliflower cheese was good, but we paid £4 extra for this, on top of the £19 for the roast. At this point, we were left on our own. Staff came and went, taking orders at the next table. We and our abandoned meals were ignored. No one asked us whether we wanted desserts or coffee, which was probably just as well under the circumstances. I paid at the bar and we left. This is really not good enough. Eating out is very expensive these days, so it is reasonable to expect good quality. Some recent reviews on this site suggest that some customers are still having good experiences at The George, but the picture is one of inconsistency. Ultimately, it begins and ends with the food - if that's not up to scratch, people will stop visiting. On top of this though, there is a sense that the management doesn't really care very much about their customers - or about their junior staff, who shouldn't have been left to deal with our problem. As I said, we've been visiting The George regularly for many years but, sadly, we are unlikely to be back any time soon.

Entered the bar shortage of bar staff, wine served in timbers no wine glasses. Sat down for a meal. Then had to go to bar for someone to come and take our order. Came with no menus. Then it took 40 minutes for food to arrive. . Meal arrived roast beef came as a steak joint very small. Not a lot of veg carrots and peas. They had run out of cabbage so offered us califlower cheese but very small portion, not enough for 4, 3 very small roast potatoes, thin gravy. Had then had to ask for dessert menu. Then again ask again for someone to take our order. The two servers were lovely. Desert was the best part of the meal. Very expensive for the portion of food. I come here for lunch on quite a regular basis but after todays experience I probably won’t return. Firstly I would agree with another review on here - the guy behind the bar on Thursday lunchtime was miserable, unhelpful and gave the impression he didn’t want to be there - his behaviour was verging on rude and dismissive. I have experienced similar from him before but thought he was just having a bad day but he’s like it all of the time it seems. The food is inconsistent in terms of quality and what you receive on your plate. The sausage and mustard mash sometimes comes with a bit of veg and sometimes doesn’t, sometimes two sausages and sometimes three. Even when I ask what it comes with “today” no one seems to know. Two sausages yesterday and no veg. The mash was totally overpowered with grain mustard - I couldn’t eat it. When I mentioned it nothing was said - no apology, nothing. Someone else’s ham egg and chips was a dismal looking plate of food - two eggs but accompanied by a lonely small piece of ham and a minuscule number of chips. It was embarrassing. I’m not sure who is managing this pub currently but if standards and bar staff don’t improve it will be another pub closure on that road I fear!

Now the not so good: This above average higher priced venue had no Sauvignon Blanc because “ our delivery did not arrive “, in my day as an owner I go to Costco and buy 12 bottles and still make money. Next , roast potatoes were soggy, likely because they had been sitting for a while. The service overall was a bit hit and miss, and the team seemed a bit stretched even though they were not full. Finally, with only four options on the deserts menu, two were not available. Now, at £19 for a Sunday roast, this needs to be better, especially as there are venues in the area at similar prices that do much better.

Feel ripped off and disgusted at the appalling experience received, as a paying customer, at The George today for Sunday lunch. Arrived for lunch booking at 12:45, the place was not yet busy. Only 2x roast options on the menu, no starters or alternative mains available. We both went for beef, it took 25 mins to arrive at our table. It initally looked great, but we noticed there was just a drip of gravy on the meat only, so we asked for some extra. On first mouthful we realised the gravy already on the plate was lukewarm. Turned out everything on the plate except for the roast potatoes was literally tepid. The teenage waitress asked how the meal was within 2 mins, I felt awkward about complaining, but said quietly that actually it was all cold other than the potatoes. She apologised and asked what we would like her to do. We'd only had a mouthful or two, so asked for her to swap our meals for new hot ones. She went off to get another inexperienced girl from behind the bar, we were then awkwardly put in a position where we had to then repeat the same complaint with both of them eyeballing us; after a pause, she looked at us blank, then said that everything is served up from stove straight to the plate. My partner calmly invited her to try something off of the plate to prove that other than the potatoes it was all tepid, and there was no way this could be true in our case. Shockingly, she then offered to microwave our meals! - we couldnt believe it! £19 on a 'fresh' roast and she wanted to microwave it like a meal for one from Iceland. Anyone with hospitality experience would know that obviously this would continue to cook the beef to make it tough and is really not something to be offering a paying customer either!...For reasons still unknown, they were unwilling to get us fresh meals so we had to eat the now totally cold ones. When the bill arrived we were charged full price, no complimentary drink or discount offered. They had even charged us for extra gravy despite there only being a drip on the plate on the plate in the first place (heard other tables complaining at this too). They didnt care one bit that we'd had cold meals. Inexperienced staff with no proper manager in sight. It's a real shame, the meal would have been nice, and we'd have been back again in future if the food was warm/hot, or if they'd at least dealt with our complaint like we mattered and appreciated that we were paying good money. Very badly run, don't waste your money, a cold meal wasnt worth what we paid.

Scrummy lunch, got far too tipsy for a January but it was so hard to leave! Thank god the fire wasn’t on (they explained they are waiting for a door replacement when I tried to get them to light it 😂) otherwise I would have tried to move in!

Is the pub struggling? Last couple times called in there for a drink, first time had no gas apparently for the beer pumps, so could only serve bottles, next times, 2 out of three beers from hand pumps not on, and no selection of crisp behind the bar. Just makes you wonder.

Visited the George this afternoon and was pretty disappointed! Nice pub, nice setting and food appeared nice. We were handed the Sunday menu, only after ordering were we told today was roast dinner only, we weren’t advised this when being seated. Roast beef was £19 and it was nice, but very small. We had 2 roast potato’s and 2 small slices of beef with a handful of vegetables. Way overpriced for what we got. Staff were particularly rude, we overheard them explaining the lack of menu choice today a number of times with other customers being frustrated. Might have just been a bad day overall but pretty disappointed with our visit.

Comically bad lunch. Ordered and waited almost an hour for the staff to realise the order hadn’t gone to the kitchen as the printer had broken. Food came eventually but was not as described - fish finger sandwiches were actually battered fish between bread. I had intentionally not ordered the battered fish in the pub as this is always dense and heavy batter - and this is what I ended up with but in sandwich form. Really greasy, heavy batter and hardly any fish in a basic white bread sandwich. The pub did comp us a pint for the delay but for £36 this was a very bad VfM lunch.

Disappointed! First visit was greeted with staff who could not be bothered and no background music. It felt like a funeral wake. Second visit several months later....still no background music (wake feel) I asked a member of staff why and they said the speakers are broken. It's been months since my last visit, so why have they not been fixed. The pub log burning glass is broken so the whole pub smells of smoke. I will not be spending any more money here. Its a shame because the garden is beautiful. It needs a shake up or a manager.

Very poor selection of meals available. What came was awful. Very disappointing meals. We were a group of three but all the meals were of very poor quality. Poor service. I asked for a sweet sherry but what came can only be described as a syrup, must have been kirsch. It was definitely not a sherry. Apparently that's all they had, they asked if I wanted ice in it! In sherry?? I would suggest The George be avoided.

We visited this place for Xmas lunch today with our family and daughter. We are absolutely devastated with how our Christmas has been ruined by the diabolical meal they served us. I’m mortified I trusted the reviews. It was absolutely disgraceful and to think they had the audacity to try and charge £90 per head is beyond me this place should have an inspection to see if this food is actually fit for consumption. I’ve had better meals out of a tin. Avoid like the plague.

Food was really tasty however the service and communication was really bad. There were three other tables in, and I had to keep going to the bar to request drinks, and when the drinks came to the table the waitress didn’t take the old glasses away! Feel the floor staff need some further training, 101 of hospitality- like, ‘I’m sorry we don’t have that dish’, rather than-‘we don’t have it, so do you want something else?’ When you spend £100 on a lunch, you expect decent service - sort it out @thegeorge! We would have spent more if we’d have been asked if we wanted wine with our meal, however we were not so drank the water (that we went to fetch). No tip left other than these comments, disappointed! Also, presentation of food Was a little lacking!
