What a pub. The staff are incredible (owners I don't know how much you are paying them but you should give them a pay rise). Such friendly and helpful staff. A very impressive looking pub. The game crisps are great. The garden is good with cushions and blankets provided, a few chairs with arms would be appreciated by me as it helps those with difficulties. The seating just in the entrance was very good. Handy for the bus. We will be back. Don't suppose you can demolish the houses at the back? It would provide a great view.

We haven't been to The George for years, however, following such good reports we decided to go for a family meal. It didn't disappoint, pub, bar and garden are great and we all had a fantastic meal! The staff were great too! Went back to the George last night for a small family birthday celebration. Once again the staff were fantastic, the food was really good, can personally recommend the Wild mushroom and bourguignon pie! Also, their initiatives with working with local food businesses is brilliant!

I only stayed one night but I had a lovely room, very clean, nicely decorated and a very roomy bathroom! There was even a little welcome gift of homemade cookies hanging on the door which were incredibly delicious! Great location if you need to get to the airport. There's a sort of "do-it-yourself" breakfast which is available all through the night if you have an early flight.

Top pub with fantastic service and a lovely patio area at the back for drinks in the sun. The beef sunday roast was excellent - you can tell that high quality ingredients are used. Cauliflower cheese was standout and the “proper” sticky toffee pudding was one of the best I’ve ever had. Keep up the great food and hospitality - we will be back!

Be aware of additional charges. The food is excellent and the service is friendly. However, when I last had Sunday lunch, I was charged extra for a very small "jug" of gravy. The amount of gravy served on the plate is minimal. I like to have gravy in my yorkshire, so I ordered extra. I wasn't told of the additional charge and didn't notice until after I had settled the bill. The charges are on the high side for Sunday lunch. A charge of £1.50 really is mean, especially as the serving was so minimal.

Since writing my original post we've revisited the George a few times, most lately yesterday evening. On each of these occasions the food has always been super tasty and perfectly portioned. However, the service is really not good - the staff didn't seem happy or bothered and at times, quite surly. On balance, whilst the meal was excellent, we did leave feeling disappointed. Would be great if you could get some decent zero alcohol options too...Guinness Zero, Goram IPA, Clear Head, Thatchers Zero would all be good additions. Previously...Fabulous tasty meal on a Thursday evening. The belly pork in particular was divine with a good pint of Landlord! Not cheap but a lovely meal and excellent service.

We have had many meals and nights out at the George over the years Tonight was the poorest service and meal I’ve ever had My lamb plate was cold and we waited too long for it to arrive. My friends had finished their meal before my second attempt was delivered. We ordered sweets and we had to ask twice to chase them up. Coffee was delivered but finished before the mini puds arrived. In the end we gave up and asked for the bill The staff were lovely and apologised but as I told them - lovely to have an apology but not their fault. I wanted to talk to the manager to explain why we were unhappy but despite assurance you would appear - we could wait no longer and drove home I think - given the problems one of you should have appeared at table - not leave staff to do it for you Sadly - we will cross The George off our list as a local diner after this experience

Lovely pub with very friendly staff. Expensive drinks but the food was lovely. Just one thing which seems to be happening in more and more eating venues was the American style 10% gratuity payment added to the bill!? By adding this cost without the initial agreement of the customer, is designed to make it just too embarrassing to challenge when paying! I personally would rather leave a cash tip for the staff if they serve you well! So basically add on 10% when you look at the advertised prices in this pub!

I can’t recommend The George highly enough for their outstanding food and drink and also the exemplary staff. The atmosphere was great too and I guess a change of management must have occurred as you can quite clearly see that attention to detail has improved greatly since I last had a meal there. I thought the pumpkins were a lovely touch along with a “what’s on” board highlighting forthcoming events! A great place to have a drink by the cosy open fire or a really decent meal in the restaurant!

I recently dined at The George at Backwell near Bristol and, I must admit, my experience was mixed. The place has a certain charm that seems to captivate the locals, but I left feeling somewhat underwhelmed. Firstly, The George has an air of sophistication that can come off as a bit pretentious. The decor is certainly stylish, but it feels like they might be trying a bit too hard to impress. It lacks the warm, welcoming atmosphere that I prefer in a classic, English establishment. The service, while polite, felt somewhat distant. The staff were professional, but I sensed a lack of genuine warmth and hospitality. It seemed more about maintaining a certain image rather than making guests feel truly comfortable. When it comes to the food, the menu is quite ambitious with a range of dishes that sound enticing. Some of the items I tried were enjoyable, but others missed the mark. The focus on presentation sometimes overshadowed the actual flavors, leading to a meal that didn't quite justify the high prices. Speaking of prices, dining at The George is not a budget-friendly experience. The cost is quite steep, and while some might argue it's worth it for the atmosphere and culinary ambition, I personally found it a bit too much for what was delivered. Despite my reservations, it's clear that The George has a loyal local following. There must be a certain appeal that resonates with the community, even if it didn't fully resonate with me. In summary, The George at Backwell is a place that certainly has its admirers, and I can see why it might appeal to some. However, for me, the combination of high costs and a somewhat pretentious vibe means I’m unlikely to return. It’s worth a visit if you’re curious, but keep in mind that it might not be to everyone’s taste.

Stayed last night . We had early flights out of Bristol airport . Stairs , are narrow steep and spirally . If you have mobility issue’s this place is not for you . While staff helped us up with our suitcases , getting them down at 3am for an early flight , was a nightmare . Food , a very average burger with a tiny portion of chips £16:50 . Then my wife had a Sundae which was supposed to be coconut nut ice cream , cherries and waffle . What actually turned up was vanilla ice cream , with ice crystals and some rather sorry cherries a strawberry cut in half on top . Harvester looks good compared to this . It went back . The room was small airless and had a very noisy mobile aircon unit in it . Not a great nights sleep . The toilet/ wet room . Don’t plan on going to the loo after you have showered , not well thought out . Will we return , no .

New Managers in the last 3 weeks. Yesterday was a great evening. Encouraged by the offer of a free drink, the pub was packed with everyone enjoying themselves. They also produced very tasty free bar snacks. This is all very encouraging, and I think we, at last, "have our George back" after the major problems of the last few years. Probably best to ignore reviews dated before early June, as they will refer to the era before these new managers. Good luck to James & Padraig. We hope all goes well from now. Robin Lambert.

The pub itself is lovely, really nicely decorated and welcoming. It was moderately busy and the atmosphere was good. We popped in for dinner at 19:45 on Friday night and were asked to order as quickly as possible as “the chefs didn’t want to work” so we ordered straight away at the bar. I have to say for £16, my chicken burger was absolutely terrible. I’ve attached a photo - a dry bun, 1 bit of deep fried chicken and a little bit of pickled red cabbage, clearly out of a jar, which had been described as ‘pickled cabbage slaw’ on the menu but was so vinegary. Not even a little bit of lettuce, and the smallest dollop of BBQ sauce which was also incredibly vinegary. Honestly terrible food for that price. A McDonalds chicken burger would have about 100x more love and care put into it, which is really saying something. Im more than happy to pay £16 for a burger - every business has to make money and the overheads in hospitality are massive - but I do expect it to be at least half decent.

We arrived on a Sunday before an early flight Monday. We were told when we went to the bar that they didn't serve food on a Sunday evening and had tried to contact us. We later saw that they had called the day before (while we were mid marriage ceremony) so we didn't pick it up, no email or any other calls. Although online it says they close 8/9 the owner locked up at 7, and I've never seen a pint of Guinness poured so badly in my life. The guy behind the bar was also rude and seemed like he wanted to be anywhere but there. The room was clean and tidy, relatively comfy bed. But that's about it.

What a complete shambIes. We decided to visit for dinner and a drink with our two young children, on our way to a friend's house. I went and ordered a gin and lemonade, the lady poured the gin then said "we don't have any ice" not a problem, she then informed me that the lemonade was off also. Great start, we asked if they were serving food. We were told 17.00 and the lady handed us some menus, so we decided to wait and play some games. After over an hour I went to order food and was informed they weren't serving until 18.00 now. This was too late for us, luckily we found somewhere else more organised to eat. The staff didn't sound like they had a clue what was going on.

False advertising and a rip off Ordered the Roast chicken but, when it arrived, I asked where the stuffing and bread sauce was. The waiter said "I'll check with the chef" then returned and said "I know it says it on the menu but we don't do it." I asked again about the stuffing and he went off only to return and say the same thing. We were still charged full price despite them offering something on the menu that just isn't included. If they'd mentioned that they didn't have it when ordering, it would have been OK but they just didn't. Also they had no idea how to pour a Guinness.

Some bits of food had been left out plus an urn for hot drinks. This was in a side room/conservatory....the main doors to the pub were chained up and padlocked. The impression is that of a business that has been shut down/ building repossessed by the bank or something and existing b&b bookings had to be honoured.....all a bit strange. Upon arrival meet by David, showed us to our lovely room and explained the emergency procedures if required. The double bed very comfortable, tea, coffee and biscuits supplied in room. David recommended a pub that was serving food that evening a few minutes drive up the road and we were not disappointed. Quiet comfortable night sleep, hot showers and lovely fluffy towels. Breakfast is as stated, fine for us and this was reflected in the price. Would definitely stay again in this hotel.

We had the best experience, we booked for 30 people for my Dad's 60th, they had never had a party for that many people but they went above and beyond for us. We had the best time, the food was great and well timed would definitely reccomend

Entered the bar shortage of bar staff, wine served in timbers no wine glasses. Sat down for a meal. Then had to go to bar for someone to come and take our order. Came with no menus. Then it took 40 minutes for food to arrive. . Meal arrived roast beef came as a steak joint very small. Not a lot of veg carrots and peas. They had run out of cabbage so offered us califlower cheese but very small portion, not enough for 4, 3 very small roast potatoes, thin gravy. Had then had to ask for dessert menu. Then again ask again for someone to take our order. The two servers were lovely. Desert was the best part of the meal. Very expensive for the portion of food. Went to the Congresbury arms the week before and had an amazing meal. Recommended

We've been visiting The George for many years, through the glory days when Anthony and his team ran an impeccable establishment, then through the dismal collapse in standards when Punch Taverns took over, and more recently the significant improvement in quality which saw us returning as regulars. But if the latest visit is any indication, things are on the slide again. When we arrived for Sunday lunch, we were told that a large party had been booked in, so we were put in the noisy family room at a corner table near the toilets and told what was not available on the menu (pretty much everything apart from the roast). Drinks arrived slowly, followed very soon afterwards by our meals. We both had beef. One of us found the beef so tough that we couldn't cut it, while mine was so rare that it was almost raw. I normally like my beef rare, but this was leaking blood all over the rest of the food, so we complained. First they cooked my beef for a bit longer but when I too found it hard to cut, we asked for replacements. The serving staff, who were extremely young and not the same staff who had been working there recently, were very nice and did what they could. They offered us complimentary drinks, but we'd only just received our drinks anyway, so we declined. The replacement meals were ok, but that's the best you can say. The beef - a single slice, more like a minute steak - was still tough, the roast potatoes were tiny , the carrots an absolutely microscopic portion, the gravy thin and watery. The rest of the plate was filled with a horrible mix of cabbage and peas which neither of us ate. The cauliflower cheese was good, but we paid £4 extra for this, on top of the £19 for the roast. At this point, we were left on our own. Staff came and went, taking orders at the next table. We and our abandoned meals were ignored. No one asked us whether we wanted desserts or coffee, which was probably just as well under the circumstances. I paid at the bar and we left. This is really not good enough. Eating out is very expensive these days, so it is reasonable to expect good quality. Some recent reviews on this site suggest that some customers are still having good experiences at The George, but the picture is one of inconsistency. Ultimately, it begins and ends with the food - if that's not up to scratch, people will stop visiting. On top of this though, there is a sense that the management doesn't really care very much about their customers - or about their junior staff, who shouldn't have been left to deal with our problem. As I said, we've been visiting The George regularly for many years but, sadly, we are unlikely to be back any time soon.

A gem of a spot! Friendly staff. Food was delicious. I have also stayed in one of the rooms and it was very cosy and comfortable. Don't let the negative reviews fool you, sounds like they're trying to bring down a good thing here for whatever reason.

Came here for Sunday lunch. Pre booked a table but ended up in the bar next to the toilets. No starters available or main courses only beef or chicken roast. Portion of beef for £19 consisted of one very fatty tough slice. When commented on the waiter just walked away saying it wasn't his problem. I asked that my comment was passed on to management but nobody came to apologise or discuss the matter further. Avoid.

I come here for lunch on quite a regular basis but after todays experience I probably won’t return. Firstly I would agree with another review on here - the guy behind the bar on Thursday lunchtime was miserable, unhelpful and gave the impression he didn’t want to be there - his behaviour was verging on rude and dismissive. I have experienced similar from him before but thought he was just having a bad day but he’s like it all of the time it seems. The food is inconsistent in terms of quality and what you receive on your plate. The sausage and mustard mash sometimes comes with a bit of veg and sometimes doesn’t, sometimes two sausages and sometimes three. Even when I ask what it comes with “today” no one seems to know. Two sausages yesterday and no veg. The mash was totally overpowered with grain mustard - I couldn’t eat it. When I mentioned it nothing was said - no apology, nothing. Someone else’s ham egg and chips was a dismal looking plate of food - two eggs but accompanied by a lonely small piece of ham and a minuscule number of chips. It was embarrassing. I’m not sure who is managing this pub currently but if standards and bar staff don’t improve it will be another pub closure on that road I fear!

My partner and I visited the pub for the first time for lunch. The lady was really friendly and welcoming behind the bar. We had the lunch menu which was really good value, £11 for a main and a drink. We also had starters to go with it as we're piggies which were all really good, only tiny negative being the tinned peas! All the food was lovely and the staff were really friendly. The decor was lovely inside and the outside space looked really good, we'll be back with the children when the weather is warmer to enjoy the play area outside.

Waited over 1.5 hours with a child for cold food, they have a cheek to call themselves a restaurant. Get fish and chips from a takeaway instead
