Editing my previous review as a couple of years ago I can here and had an excellent dinner. Booked it again 2 weeks ago and despite confirmation via Open Table it was closed on arrival which was embarrassing for me as I had organised a birthday dinner.

My partner has apparently been barred from this pub. At no time has any explanation for this been provided. Personally I find this shocking and extremely unprofessional. How can you ban someone and not advise them of what it is they are ALLEGED to have done to result in a ban. In fact they only told of the ban on a subsequent visit. Greene King need to get their act into gear, employ management that do the right thing, engage with the locals, and thus keep a viable business in Caterham Valley where it is needed. This used to be a great pub where the locals could go and have a laugh and a drink with food. I know many many locals no longer go to the William Garland as it is simply no longer a pleasurable experience. It's turned into something weird and secretive, which is clearly not interested in serving it's formerly loyal local residents. Bring back the Old Surrey hounds ...

We were a large family group visiting on a Sunday. The food was good. We tried 2 different roast dinners which were well cooked, particularly the veg although the potatoes appeared to have been cooked or finished off in a pan. The children's burger seemed good quality and the portion sizes were good.

Very busy when we arrived. Service was so slow in the end asked if we could order. When food arrived mine and my Daughters was cold but it took so long to arrive we didn’t like to complain. Did not find it very welcoming staff were under pressure it seemed. We actually as a family named our table the forgotten table. Decided not to order desert as the service was so slow and some of our main meals cold which was really disappointing as we were celebrating my birthday. Again we had to ask for the Bill as staff just kept walking past us all the time. Such a shame as was looking forward to trying something different. The only food that was hot was the onion rings that turned up late.

It takes something really bad for me to write a negative review (as can be seen by my usual 4 or 5 star reviews)- but today is the second time we have received terrible service at The White Hart. Some months ago my wife and a friend had been out for a walk around Godstone and decided to visit The White Hart around 12.30 pm for a coffee and a light lunch. On arrival they were told, quite brusquely, that the coffee machine was out of order and they were not serving any hot food, just crisps etc. it was basically take it or leave it. What kind of good country pub can’t serve food to customers? In the end they gave up and left. They were upset at the awful service but decided not to complain or raise a negative review. Today however, was a second truly awful experience. Three of us decided we’d give The White Hart a second chance. We live in the village and always like to support our local businesses. So three of us arrived at the White Hart at 1.30pm. It was not at all busy and we waited by the ‘wait to be seated’ notice. And we waited, and we waited. There was a young lady who clearly saw us, but turned her back to us and was using the coffee machine. She definitely saw us but just ignored us completely. After 5 minutes I went to her and asked if we could please have some service to be seated. She wasn’t rude, but had no regard to any kind of customer service, simply said ‘oh that’s me to do that’ and turned her back on us and continued making coffee. This was really poor and upset us so I told her we did not appreciate the lack of service and would go to the Bell down the road. She simply said ‘sorry and ok then.’ She wasn’t in the slightest bothered. No attempt at all to help us or find us a table (we only saw one other table occupied). So we walked down the road to the Bell, which was really busy, where we received an immediate friendly reception, were immediately shown to a table , and had excellent service with excellent food. It was very easy to see why The Bell was full and The White Hart was virtually empty. The difference in welcomes and service was huge and it’s clear where we will be going in future. We feel it’s a shame because we live within a five minutes walk of The White Hart and go out for lunch or dinner regularly, but having had awful service and been let down on two separate occasions now, we will give our patronage to a local business who actually make customers feel welcome.

Great pub, great food! Really traditional inside and a lovely outdoor seating area for those warm and sunny days. The menu has something for everyone, my only thing to say would be that it would be nice to have a sandwich section for lunch. However, all the food we had was delicious and they have an excellent GF/DF menu with lots of choice!

Really enjoyed our dinner here, food was excellent and kitchen were really accommodating to tweaks of dishes. We were visiting the area for a family occasion but if we happened to be here again we’d no doubt come back. Would very much recommend.

I wasn’t really visiting the pub - I was just returning home with my car that had been in the garage - they hadn’t latched the bonnet properly so I pulled into the car park to close it - the pub was closed, and what I assume to be the landlady came out to have a go at me for being on private property - I turned the car around and wound the window down to tell her what I was doing and she started telling me I was rude - maybe she is on drugs or something - I hadn’t said a word!

Our OAP care group were dropped off by carers who can drive and once we were seated, we had the most marvellous time and near the lavatories to boot! So to the venue. Easy parking, clean and super friendly welcome. We went all in for the full 'monty', and every plate was cleared and scored top marks. OJ’s and great coffee rounded off a terrific visit. Just a warning that this is a cash only establishment, which is a dying breed these days, however fun to meet the cash rich section of society. Thank you again we loved our visit

The restaurant is lovely, set in the cloisters, the staff are attentive, very smartly dressed and the quality is good – possibly bordering on very good. However, the prices are now top end and higher than many London restaurants, for example, a fillet steak with a sauce and chips is priced at over £55 and this is before you include the 12.5% tip. That’s too much. A modest three course dinner, with a glass of wine, is starting to nudge £100 a head. I fear they are pricing themselves out of the market.
