I wasn’t really visiting the pub - I was just returning home with my car that had been in the garage - they hadn’t latched the bonnet properly so I pulled into the car park to close it - the pub was closed, and what I assume to be the landlady came out to have a go at me for being on private property - I turned the car around and wound the window down to tell her what I was doing and she started telling me I was rude - maybe she is on drugs or something - I hadn’t said a word!

Whilst the overall impression is slightly run down, the service is welcoming, the range of drinks is perfectly adequate and the food is pub-typical. In fact it is a normal country pub. These places need your visit as they are disappearing all too quickly.

Catherine and her team hosted a fantastic Christmas Party for our firm of 45 people. They produced a delicious 3 course meal, including vegan and gluten free options. The pub was beautifully decorated and the staff lovely. We were made to feel very welcome and the feedback from everyone was that it was the best venue we had every held an event at.

We were looking for somewhere near Gatwick to meet up with the Family. There were 6 of us and I chose The Blacksmiths Head with some reservations - but - we had a great evening. I don't normally eat burgers but these were really tasty and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Desserts were also very nice. The service was a bit slow but we didn't mind that given the food was well prepared and tasty. Nice casual place.

Here for a light lunch on a Sunday; I had a tuna sandwich which at £6.50 was a joke when it was served with a very cooked salad. I ordered a side order of chips £3.00 in a small mug which were a bit dear. My wife ordered fish and chips which came with overdone peas and a tasteless batter. It was OK. I came away very disappointed.

Came here for lunch en route to Standen on Good Friday. It was a spur of the moment thing. We sat in the small but pleasant garden. Limited menu today so we opted for the chicken Cajun baguettes each with a portion of onion rings/fries to share. Food was very good. Hot, freshly prepared and cooked to order. Stayed for tea and coffee. Very nice helpful and friendly young man behind the bar. Whilst sitting in the garden we watched a pair of buzzards flying low overhead and also had robin Join us and a variety of butterflies. Joyful.

Me and my financé stopped here for some lunch before attending an event at lingfield racecourse. We ordered a Diet Coke, took a few sips and realised it was completely flat. Took it back to the bar, where the awful woman behind the counter decided I was lying. She then proceeded to pour some into a glass to try for herself, and disagreed with me saying that was how it’s supposed to taste. Let me tell you, that drink was disgusting.

Stone cold i told the barstaff to feel it she replied "oh ok i will put it in microwave"!!!?? 10 mins later still no sign i went in bar and asked for refund.

We were a party of six at a family celebration on a Saturday evening. The area is divided into two with the bar in one section and a separate but adjoining dining area. The service was very slow, mainly because it seemed that there was only one person serving both the restaurant and a fairly busy bar. There were only 10 diners all evening. Some of the party had starters of baked Camenbert. These were good and definitely designed to be shared! The mains however were all disappointing. The lamb shanks were well cooked but the vegetables were poor. A half parsnip, unpeeled and with the hard centre core was inedible because it was so undercooked and the mashed potato was lumpy with 1p sized lumps of unmashed potato. The beouf stroganoff was tasty but a cheap cut of beef had been used and it was undercooked and chewy. The pie of the day, beef and Guiness, had a lot of pastry that was burnt and blackened in places. The Blacksmiths Head seems to have reasonably good reviews on Tripadvisor but our experience was anything but.

More of a thank you than a review. The burgers were great and the chutney was delicious. In these times of gastro pubs we expect a lot as customers. This is not a gastro pub. It is a pub that serves food 6-9pm. We fell foul of that. Having sat down at 8pm by the time we finished our mains the kitchen had closed. It would have been nice to have been told that even though it is written in big letters on the blackboard. Really nice pint of Doom Bar (so we're the following four).

We went for dinner at 6.30, having found the Blacksmith's Head on our Tastecard app. It does indeed take the Tastecard (except Friday and Saturday) which saved us £14.When we went in, the noise from the bar (including some pretty colourful language) was quite distracting as we took our seats, but that dissipated soon enough. I suspect booking later would have avoided that. Hence, we were a little disappointed until the food arrived, but when it did... WOW!!I had the stuffed Chicken, and my Fiancee had the Steak. both were exceptionally good. Amazing quality. We then had summer fruits and ice cream for pudding.Thoroughly recommended - especially for Tastecard holders. Book later in the evening to avoid the rowdy bar crowd!

We arrived at about 12.30. Place was busy, both with friends of our large group and other members of the public. X1 new barman whose first day. He could take order. Another man guessing was manager very abrupt with new boy also heard to be saying to guests " there's too many of you and I'm getting very angry" ! Not something to say to paying guests. Asked to order drinks and food. New boy did drinks (eventually ) after doing another x2 orders in between!! Food order was taken by "regular " as new boy wasn't allowed to and manager was shouting around the place. I made sure I saw order piece of paper go into kitchen before going into garden expecting a wait as I could see they were busy. Another regular from the pub helped me with carrying my drinks. Wasn't irate at this point. Quite happy to wait for the food. One hour later however still no food. Others that had ordered after me, had there's? Went to bar, told they are backed up but should be soon. One and half hours gone from original order time and I went back and was told order was lost, but they would crack on with it immediately. Eventually got meal after one and three quarter hours, and to be fair it was tasty. The tuna salad I had was delicious. Decided couldn't cope with wait for pudd ( as some friends still waiting for main course food) so paid up. Asked bar man about why wait so long and could they knock off one main meal due to extended wait and the lady from kitchen very nicely said the food would be complimentary. We paid for drinks and said thanks very much. So....food tasty when you eventually get it. Service awful. Manager abrupt. (I pity the new barman he was horrid to him on his first day, no wonder there's no staff there!!)They knew we as a party of 30 were coming and 1 person in the kitchen was not sufficient. But well done kitchen lady for trying your best on your own!! I will advise our organiser to try another pub next time as this is the second time we've been here and the staffing has been poor both times. Shame

Went for a family meal (4 people) on Bank Holiday Monday, had booked a table for 12 o'clock. When we arrived the pub/restaurant was closed and we couldn't get in, this was at 12 o'clock, we waited for about 10 minutes before the place was opened. As we were the only people there, there was no atmosphere and no music and only one member of staff. Another group arrived just after us and both parties ordered food. The restaurant originally said they were serving roast dinners, then said they couldn't do them, there was also only one available of many items on the menu. Our food took almost an hour to arrive, with no explanation or apology, the other diners had their food within 20 minutes! The toilets were very dirty, didn’t look like they had been cleaned for days and the soap had dirt all over it. The table surface was grubby and all the chairs had food particles such as rice on them. Several pieces of cutlery were also dirty and I also had to send back a glass with a dirty red smear down the side. When the food eventually arrived it was good quality, although when we asked for mayonnaise we received one tiny pot between three people!Couldn’t be bothered to wait for dessert, so paid and left. The staff seemed uninterested in our opinions, so won’t be back. A great shame as we had a fantastic meal and service there not so long ago.

When it came, the salad was good, chips not 'hand cut' and very average. I requested free coffee to compensate. This turned out to be instant and pretty vile.A load of noisy young men made a racket in the bar, the place was not big enough to get away from their noise.Must say that the bar boy was very apologetic, which made it less bad an experience although didn't improve the coffee.

We've been to this pub a few times to eat now and it has been consistently good. The pub is family run - we've seen the owners there every time and they've done a really good job of balancing pub and restaurant without detracting from either. The food here is great - our starters were pretty large, which was a good thing as they were excellent but it did mean we just couldn't squeeze in any puddings afterwards! The main courses were also excellent I had duck my wife had liver - both perfectly cooked and delicious. The menu offers good choices with daily specials and a good choice of reasonably priced wine. The pub had a nice atmosphere with log fires and comfortably spaced dining area set away from the main bar and 'drinking areas'. Service here is not great. It took forever to get served throughout the night. Our server seemed to pride herself in her ability to avoid us. Once we eventually received our food and drinks, the quality of both was very good. The homemade hot sauce was simply divine. One thing that bothered me tremendously was the smell of cigarette smoke throughout and the fact that the three visible smoke detectors were intentionally wrapping in plastic wrap, presumably so the smoke would not set off the alarms. I have to believe that is a violation, even in Britain.

There were quite a few people in the restaurant but only one table was eating - the others were sitting there looking expectant. All in all it sèemed pretty chaotic so we decided to leave and eat somewhere else.Based on these two visits I can recommend lunch when things seem to be more manageable but not an evening meal ( at least on busy evenings) as they dont seem to cope so well.

There is a wood burner which adds to the cosy atmosphere. The menu is beautifully written on a very large blackboard and the food offered is varied and extensive. As we only wanted a quick meal we settled for the Homemade burgers. The choice is not just beef and they come with hand cut chips or French fries, a dip/relish and a small salad. The burgers were homemade and very tasty, with plenty of burger and not too much bun! The staff were very pleasant and attentive even though the bar was busy. We were pleased that we had stopped here and hope to return again on our next visit to the area.

On balance dissapointed... The reviews were all good. The Web site good. Menu OK. However, on the Thursday night we visited the projection TV with Eastenders at full volume spoilt the atmosphere...even having an extension speaker in the restaurant itself. Clearly trying hard to decorate the restaurant and offer a quality pub Fayre but fell short on this visit for both food and atmosphere. Shame.

What can I say! well we visited the Blacksmiths Head last night for a drink and was so tempted by the menu we ended up staying for a meal, and we are glad we did, I had the tomatoes and mozzarella stack to start and the ribeye steak for mains (no room left for desert), the portions were perfect, the food was even better, the steak was gorgeously juicy, tender and full of flavour, great service and great atmosphere, good ales and well kept, worth every penny and we will be back for more for sure, highly recommendedI never bothered with writing reviews in the past as I felt they were prone to manipulation and generally false, but I felt compelled to start writing reviews after I had a disappointing visit to a local pub that my wife now refers to as the "Nightmare & Hounds" that had seemingly great reviews!!!! and now I shall share my personal experiences on all the places I visit, in fact my wife and I are in danger of this becoming a hobby, who knows maybe a pub guide could be on the cards followed by a trip to weight watchers

Went for an early evening dinner the other Saturday night with a rather greedy friend. We both went for the turkey burgers off the Christmas menu. Delicious breaded turkey, bacon, brie, cranberry and stuffing with a yummy brioche bun. Best chips I've had in a pub too. The meal even beat my friend. Couldn't quite finish all his salad! Well worth a visit.

Very friendly welcome and great food! Very attractive old building. Will definitely go back again. THe restaurant area was full so we sat in the bar but it was still very pleasant. It seems well liked by regular locals but was very welcoming to newcomers!

Had a wonderful meal and drink in this great, old English pub.The atmosphere, the barkeep, the waitstaff, the food, the beer - all top notch and well worth a stop!We ordered the Blacksmiths pie and the Pork Medallions. Both were cooked to perfection, fresh and mouth watering. Topped it off with a local brew and the experience was perfect for our final night of our 3 1/2 week trip through Europe!

We found ourselves in The Blacksmiths Head last weekend. My partner was completing a course at London Scuba and based on the reviews I read online I thought we should have dinner at the pub rather than trek all the way back to London. We ended up in the pub for a long time due to the course overrunning. The lady behind the bar was very friendly and looked after us while we waited even bringing us some bread and olives while we waited. This was a lovely touch which we really appreciated. We then ordered starters and main courses. All the food was delicious and clearly homemade which is hard to find in pubs!! The chips were great. I would highly recommend this place to anyone doing London Scuba across the road or if you're in the area. The pub also has a lovely garden.

This was our second visit to this Pub which is only a couple of miles from home and both times we have been impressed. The pub is basically split in two (although open plan) with a traditional bar area and a more formal dining area, but its the same menu in both. The menu is simple there is a a range of burgers, steaks, and other pretty standard pub fare. However with complimentary olives and bread at the start the dining experience at the Blacksmiths feels immediately superior to your average pub with grub. This was a family outing, Three of us had various burgers while Dad in Law went for the liver, the burgers are home made and very generous. The liver, bacon and mash also looked good! In fact the helping were so generous that we umm'd and ahh'd over pudding. But my sweet tooth was not to be denied and I plumped for the Eton Mess which was superb. All in all good value and a good eating experience.

My friend and I popped in here one lunch time because we fancied proper pub grub not the commercial tat they were serving up the road in the chain pub. Lots of choice on the menu. I opted for the chicken in breadcrumbs with lettuce and mayo in a baguette. My friend just wanted a salad but there wasn't any on the menu. We asked the delightful and welcoming barmaid and she said no problem. What would you like. My friend was most satisfied. He had a ham salad. None of the sliced packet ham you'd expect but proper thick sliced ham off the bone. Mine also came with chips. These were to die for. Triple cooked so very crunchy on the outside but so fluffy inside. We both agreed they were the best chips we've ever eaten. We both took doggy bags home as there was so much on the plates we couldn't eat it all.Inside the decor was old fashioned and tired looking but perfect for a British village pub.All in all a very nice experience. Can't wait to go back for an evening meal as there was a lot of very nice dishes on the menu.Mussels, swordfish, sea bass to name a few.

I really can't speak highly enough of the Blacksmiths Head in Lingfield. Cathy, the landlady, accommodated our party of 29 people for a Friday night dinner at 24hrs notice, after we were let down by a local hotel. It was the eve of our wedding, and their friendly "can do" attitude put us at ease and created the exact kind of relaxed atmosphere we were after for our family and close friends to chill out before our big day. The chef cooked, and Cathy served, all 29 of us a full 3 course meal, and not a scrap was left - the food was delicious. I had a lovely homemade soup, and a perfectly cooked steak and chips. Others had pate, calamari, fresh fish, burgers, pork belly and pies. Food and drinks were very reasonably priced, and Cathy even arranged our cabs at the end of the night. Thank you for everything - we will be back!

After driving around the Sussex countryside and visiting a few National trust premises we decided to look somewhere for lunch and came across 'The Blacksmiths Head' just outside Lingfield. We found the food and drink really good and reasonably priced.Really nice staff but they took time finding a left handed cup for my coffee.I think this place is worth a visit.

This is a friendly little pub with a really pretty dog friendly garden. I went with three friends a few weeks ago and used my Taste card. The girl I booked with omitted to tell me that it was only valid for menu items and not the specials. Unfortunately my three friends had all ordered the surf and turf special - however the lady immediately said they would honour it. Incidentally it was absolutely delicious. The Camembert starter was huge and would easily make a sharing plate. We were all too full to contemplate desert unfortunately but there was a good selection. This pub/restaurant is close to home for me and I will be visiting again soon. Highly recommended.

This surely must rank as the worst pub for miles, the staff are surly, put their fingers all over the cutlery. They keep the pub more chilled than the white wine and sell burgers as a special which are about as tasty as block of sawdust. The pub is desolate and needs to be closed and converted into a house so a to provide a use to the area.Do not waste your time or money in visiting this disaster area. We gave them a chance although I was all for leaving without paying for the food.I regret there is not one saving grace about the whole place.

We stopped off for a Sunday lunch, we should not have botherd. From the outside the pub looked fine, although the hanging baskets with dead plants should have been a warning. There is a large car park, but the interior could certainly do with a good tidy-up.The roast beef was thinly cut and tough, the roast potatoes were almost unroasted and the whole meal was warm rather than hot, followed by a tiny portion of sticky pudding and at £4.95 a rip off! The owners were cheerful enough and service was fine. but the whole event was a huge disappointment. First and last visit to the Blacksmiths Head.

Lovely salad box and mug of tea. Freshly prepared and very tasty. Just one tiny fault was that they had their radio on in the kitchen area which was a bit loud and they couldn’t always hear what the customers ordered. Perhaps turn the volume down just a tad! Apart from that it was perfect!

Service was poor/ lacking and bordering rude. Despite being told to ‘sit there whilst we get you menus’ it turned out that was indeed our place next to the bar prep area with all its banging and crashing. So many staff but no captain (the lady I assume was in charge was not interested). It was organised chaos. Took orders for drinks but they never arrived. Requested jug of water, didn’t arrive. I don’t think the same member of staff came back once. Dinner was great quality etc - except I was rudely told I couldn’t get more potatoes only the cabbage, pretty odd considering they charge over £20 for a carvery. I honestly thought our table was invisible to them. Kept having to try and catch their attention and they’d do anything to look away. Really unfriendly. Desert was bizarre. I fancied a chocolate sundae, I got 2 ice cream scoops with a fat chocolate cookie forced in between. Ridiculous. And to top it all I asked for the bill and that person said yes then 10 minutes later was doing something else so I ask again. They charged me £18 service charge too! Such a shame as the building is lovely, food (carvery anyway) was nice but the service was astonishing - a masterclass in how not to run a restaurant.
