1st visit in a long time, loverly old pub. Had Sunday lunch menu. Had the beef roast which was presented well, some sides come at an extra cost. Good portions and very tasty. Tried the Tiramisu for pudding, was very nice but a little expensive for the portion size. Beer selection ok. Overall a very pleasant lunch.

In the late 1990s The Swan was the best pub restaurant for miles around. The food was excellent as was the service and the couple who ran it were very hands on. Sadly they sold and The Swan was bought by a brewery chain and moved from great to not so great to actually terrible. It was a real shame. We went once just before Christmas and there was one other couple dining. This in a pub that used to be packed. To add insult to what is a lovely old building in a beautiful village, the pub was badly redone inside and painted outside a sort of sludge green. Now thankfully The Swan has been sold again and bought by a young couple with good experience. Of course you can’t change everything overnight but the food on the Sunday we went was superb and the service getting back to where it should be. Long may it continue to improve.

My husband and I popped in for lunch on a wet, miserable Thursday on our way home from Winchester, the pub was extremely busy which we hoped was a good sign and although there were no tables available the two ladies in charge suggested if we have a seat at the bar a table might become available as some people were just ordering coffee, we were very happy we took their advice. The table did become available and we then enjoyed an extremely good lunch with both food and service being top notch.

This is a very comfortable, clean restaurant, with excellent food and pleasant staff. But, unlike most others, dogs are banished to outside, so no good for the colder months. Haskins is really missing a trick here. Many people travel with their well-behaved pets. Nearly all other places cater for them Haskins is a massive restaurant, and could easily have a doggy area. Highdown, just along the road is more amenable.

We went here for my birthday - an overnighter and from the pictures I was quite excited and certainly from the front it looks and is, beautiful. We stay in a lot in pubs of this type and all my remarks are in the context of other experiences. Let's start with the not so good and finish positively. Not so good:- We had dinner in the Swan Room which despite a radiator under the window was cold. Before we moved to the window it was cold enough for my wife to leave her outdoor coat on at the table. This room is in desperate need of 'warming up' and I'm not only talking about the heating. I know this stuff is subjective, but dark stone, white walls and bright 'naked' type light bulbs are not "cosy country inn". The room is cold and atmosphere-less. Some warm paint tones and colourful accessories to brighten the room up are desperately needed. Softer, warmer lighting should be tried - maybe colourful shades? The effect of the cold decor is that we weren't encouraged to stay longer with our meal and hence ordered less which translates in to lower income. The online menu differs slightly from the printed one. I really fancied the Sheperds Pie as advertised online with a pint of Hobgoblin Ruby, neither of which was available. They don't do Irish coffee!? Why? It's not rocket science and pretty much anyone can make it and it wasn't as though they were busy. The stairs from the lounge area to the bedrooms is STEEP and WINDING, beware! Another stair case from the carpark is available. Our room was overall nice but, some paintwork in our ensuite needed sprucing up and the divan base to the bed was yellowing discoloured - a bit yucky. See photos. The shaving mirror in the ensuite was missing and you needed training in Hogwarts magical skills to get the wc to flush. Finally, the good stuff. The meal was delicious, my steak being perfectly cooked and my crumble was yummy. Carpark is private and spacious and the staff were friendly. In context, the room was £155 for the night. Remember, this is a mid week low season rate without breakfast and quite frankly, not worth the money. Based on our experience, £110/night would have been a fair price. Lord knows what it is in the summer, but sadly there are so many others of this type to try, we wont be back.

My family and I had two excellent meals here over our weekend break. Our first meal was on the Friday night after a long drive from home. We enjoyed it so much we booked again for the Sunday Lunch which was amazing. As well as the food being fabulous, we received excellent service and hospitality from Matt, Lisa and Lily who could not have been more helpful. Thank you all you all so much.

Booked for the ‘free food and drink on your birthday’ offer as advertised on the website as a 2025 offer to be told it’s food only- if you click on the ‘free food and drink’ line it takes you to a page showing only food is included. Very misleading, please update your website.

Great food and service - very warming & homely pub/restaurant. Staff were lovely and the food was delicious. They were also good enough to send an item back to me that I left behind when I got back to Manchester. Will definitely go again on my next visit.
