Cracking staff. Customer service is the best I've ever seen. I love the bear so much. It is a true tribute to the Greene King institution. A ray of sunshine in this dark world. Life is infinitely better, as my eyes have now seen a true glimpse of perfection. Wow.

I was there because I wanted to eat something. The food in terms of taste, appearance, quality is simply awful!

Had late lunch on Sunday, really disappointed with the standard, Roast dinner looked like it was just chucked on the plate, vegetables were sparse, missing items. Would not return

A lovely 2 night stay at the Bear. From the moment we arrived on 20th to when we left today, the staff were superb. The gentleman on reception (and in the restaurant!) was so helpful as was the lady who ran the excellent breakfast service on Saturday and Sunday and was so friendly and professional. The rooms were great and close to the lovely town centre and not far from the M4 either. We will be back.

This is such a cosy pub with a spacious outside area. Great food options, Keiran and Tito went above and beyond for us, and were so generous with their service. Good vegan options and the lamb shank was incredible. If we weren't just visiting we would be here all the time.

The rooms,staff and food are all fabulous. It is a great hotel. Sadly I can only give 1 star as a week after arriving home I received 2 parking fines despite registering my car on the iPad in reception. This really sours a lovely stay at a lovely place. I followed the rules but the parking company just want to scam people. Feel sorry for The Bear it will put people off going.

Really disappointed with the Sunday lunch, do not expect frozen roasties on a pub Sunday lunch, the vegetables were severely lacking, 1 floret of broccoli, 1 slice of carrot and 1 slice of parsnip does not constitute vegetables for a Sunday lunch, unfortunately the staff were not welcoming or friendly either, will not be returning

Stopped off to this pub whilst staying in the area. Large pub area and very friendly staff with a good choice of drinks. Would revisit again

Went in for a meal and service was very poor. Two tables ordered their food after us and were both served before us, starters and main meals. We had to ask a couple of times how much longer our meals were going to be only to be told we would be next, which we weren't. When the meals were delivered we were told that they'd run out of certain items, with nothing extra offered. We weren't even offered so much as a complimentary drink for our inconvenience. Would definitely not return to this pub.

We popped in for a bite to eat at 8.40pm on 22nd March 2024. The very rude staff member gruffly barked at me that last orders were 9pm. So, in my book, there was another 20 minutes to order. His attitude worsened when I pointed this out and he said that if we didn't order there and then, the kitchen would shut. We didn't have much choice in the town so against our better judgment, ordered. The food was at best, below average. Two weeks later, I received a fixed penalty parking charge from Britannia Parking for parking in THEIR OWN car park! I didn't see any signs and for goodness sake, charging! So, £60 to park in their car park, lousy food, and lousy customer service. My recommendation? Dont go!

It was very cold inside the bar/restaurant area. Quick service with nice food. Was a little more expensive than my local Greenking pubs with the same food and drinks.

We had a super time here, we came for an impromptu evening meal with our 6 year old daughter. The food was delicious and the service fantastic with really lovely friendly staff.

Loved this hotel. On arrival our room was lovely and warm (it was minus 3 outside) and cosy and well decorated Staff really friendly and we loved the old feel of the building. Hungerford is great and we enjoyed a pretty canal walk.

I often eat here with family and friends. It was very busy for a Monday evening because there were a lot of Christmas parties, but we still received excellent service from the young man who we believe is italian. The food as always was very good. My only negative comment would be that not all of our initial choices were available. This does seems to be a frequent issue. But I have to say this is not a big problem because there are quite a few options on the menu, and we were happy with our second choices.

Had high expectations for the bear unfortunately the experience fell well below par, bacon was burnt in the hunters chicken leaving a burnt taste, notified staff of the issue with the bacon and they got replacement bacon but this still remained overdone. fried egg white was burnt, surprisingly the yolk remained runny. Service was slow and staff appeared nervous during visit. The building itself is very glamorous and would probably be nice as a hotel but the restaurant and noisy busy road made it feel like they were just polishing a turd.

Very poor service. food was over cooked, we had salad on a hot plate, so we had cooked salad, it over an 3/4hour for starters and hour to get the main course which rubbish. Staff we friendly. If we had been told there was a wedding going we would have gone somewhere else.

We had two lovely meals and the service was friendly and efficient. We have been here before and will return.

The new chef has made an impact on the food quality. I think management should put large square umbrellas in courtyard.

A disappointing experience for several reasons. Our water glasses were cloudy and grubby looking. Our main courses weren’t all brought at the same time and the food was adequate but not worthy of the price. Some of us ordered a mini pudding and coffee. We didn’t expect to get the coffees first, we assumed they came with the puddings. The coffee was lukewarm and would have been cold if I had waited until the puddings arrived. I thought the whole point of mini pudding and coffee was that they would be served together. And if not, then the coffee should be served last. I’ve never been in a restaurant where coffee came before pudding! My bakewell tart was indeed a mini pudding but didn’t really seem like a bakewell tart as it was more coulis than pudding and cloyingly sweet. It needed cream or ice-cream to make it palatable but it seems that isn’t served with the mini-version. The bakewell tart was broken and poorly presented, which was the case with most of our courses. Three of the puddings arrived and by the time the last two were served. The whole point of a family dinner is that you eat together! There was no apology or explanation for these delays. In fact, there wasn’t any point at which staff checked that we were happy or asked ‘is/was everything ok with your meal’? which is unusual for a restaurant of this kind. Our drinks were brought to the table and plonked in the middle, rather than served appropriately. The service in general was lacklustre and it was hard to get attention or service when necessary. It all seemed very unprofessional.

Me and my partner took a trip to Hungerford and got stuck there late due to bus times (we are 18 and don’t drive) it was raining heavily and we asked the hotel receptionist if we could sit inside to wait for our bus, she was lovely and kindly said yes to us. Genuinely lovely atmosphere, everyone was welcoming and smiled at us even though we weren’t there for any specific services. We ended up ordering some food and it was delicious and served quickly. We want to go there again to stay!

Went for a meal the other weekend. Food and service were fine. Two weeks later price of the meal just went up by £60..... Apparently you need to register your car at the bar or reception. There is signage up in the carpark saying there is a maximum stay etc but nothing obvious about booking in your car when stopping for just a meal....no signs etc in the entrance that we saw.

Myself and my family booked at the Bear in Hungerford for Christmas Day lunch. The food came as expected however the service was appalling. Sat across from my table was a gentleman with a service dog. It was evident that this dog had not been taken outside for quite some time as it decided to do its business in the middle of the restaurant on the hard floor. The dogs owner then proceeded to pick up his dogs feces in a doggy poo bag and place it in his pocket for the duration of the meal. I made the situation aware to atleast two members of staff and not one of them brought it upon themselves to speak to this man or to mop the floor resulting in other members of staff treading though it. Once the meal was over and the gentleman and his family had vacated the premises the staff (who were aware of what had happened) started to clear the tables again however not once had the area been sanitised. This as you can imagine caused myself and my family to be put off of our food ruining our Christmas meal. We did not expect Greene King to have such poor hygiene and therefor Will not be visiting again for some time.

Went for a beer with friends we approached a table only to be told it was taken by a member if staff who sat alone taking up a full table .Not good this particular member of staff is the most rudest person you will ever come across

This is our favourite spot for a drink and play a fruity. There is one staff member in particular who goes above and beyond. He wears glasses and has longer dark hair. 11/10!!

Was visiting during lunch time whilst getting my car serviced next door, was greeted at the door by the wonderful receptionist who was ever so jolly. She walked me into the bar area where I was then further greeted by smiley faces. I enjoyed a lovely sandwich of the main menu, and a G AND T. My server was ever so polite Jazmín and I will definitely be returning when in the area. Big thank you to the bear hotel ! You do wonderful

Had a warm welcome from Gemma on reception and then sat down to a delicious breakfast. The service from Jasmine was efficient and friendly. It was clean and cozy, the perfect way to warm up on a cold morning! Will definitely return with friends.

Me and a friend of mine had lunch on Thursday afternoon. Not only was we looked after impeccably by Jasmine and Anna our food cooked by Vee and Jerry was the best we’ve had in a long time! All freshly cooked with tons of flavour! Thank you so much Team Bear for another lovely meal!

We didn’t book a table as it was a spur of the moment decision to have supper out whilst we were in Hungerford. We received the most warmest welcome from Vee Nothing was too much trouble - we didn’t have a starter but we all had steaks and they were cooked exactly as we askedThey were beautiful We had desserts and they were equally delightful A beautiful place to eat with fantastic staff that truly make you feel special

Dropped in on our way to London with my wife, brief visit but the service was fantastic and food was delicious. My wife enjoyed her Caesar salad, the team were lovely, friendly and attentive. We will definitely visit again

We were visiting the Victorian Extravaganza and popped into the Bear on the off chance we could get a table. It was very busy, but the staff managed to find us a table. The food was lovely and the inside was decorated beautifully for Christmas!

After a previous poor experience a while back we returned to The Bear with trepidation. However, the service from Paula and Louis was top class and the food beautifully cooked. Moreover, the portions were huge but the price very reasonable. The mussels were enough for two, my wife's battered fish was larger than the plate and all-in-all it was a great meal. Hopefully, this quality and service will continue.

Recently came to The Bear with work colleagues for our Christmas party. The whole atmosphere was brilliant, the food was delicious! Special mention to a very friendly member of staff named Anna, I asked her if I could swap my festive burger for a chicken burger which she did for me without any hesitation. Anna was incredibly attentive to us throughout the night making sure we were all happy, offering top ups of extra gravy. She also went to the kitchen especially to get vegan gravy for my colleague. Very quick service and a beautiful atmosphere -it felt like we were in Santa's grotto! Thankyou Anna for helping to make it such a perfect evening for us!

Went for dinner with friends recently. The food was excellent, and service was great. All the staff were pleasant but a special mention to Anna, who was incredibly friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. All round a great experience, thankyou

Before Green King took over this was a great pub. I had to attend a training course here and it was appalling. We had to sit at tatty old tables covered in sticky residue from previous events. There was no water offered and no place to get any. We had lukewarm coffee and tepid water to make tea. Lunch was stale bread with two rashers of undercooked bacon. I wouldn't have fed this to my dog. They had been warned the previous week when the first training course was held that the food was not acceptable and they have done NOTHING to imrpove it. The staff were doing their best but it is clear the upper management couldn't give a fig about repeat business. Our company will NEVER use this place again. The decor is old and tired and it is a shame because it has such potential to be a great place like it used to be. Avoid this sad place at all costs.

This is the 5th time we’ve stayed at the Bear and it just gets better and better. We were given an upgraded room in the hotel by the lovely Caroline and it was huge. Lovely decor, big bathroom and touches you’d expect in an Alex polizzi makeover. If you book on line you get 20% off food so no need to trek outside in the cold. Menu extensive and extremely good value for money. Fast speedy service even on a really busy Saturday night. Everyone super friendly in bar and restaurant especially Arthur and Anna who did my breakfast like a smiley face.

We went for dinner and we were in a bit of a rush but the staff were all really helpful. Tito in particular was brilliant. The food was good, reasonably priced and I was particularly impressed with the range of options for the kids menu. Good range of alcohol free drinks too.

I'm celiac and really struggle to eat out and find something I can enjoy. The food here was amazing and it's always a good test when I can't tell it's gluten free. Staff were amazing too. The pubs decor is amazing especially at this time of year. Thank you

We dropped in to The Bear today, without a reservation. It was very busy and we were welcomed into the bar area, as the restaurant was full.The staff were genuinely friendly and helpful, our Sunday roasts were delivered promptly and the portions were generous. Warm service, decent quality and value for money - top marks to the team for delivering good old fashioned hospitality.

I should have known better (Greens King owned)!! We stopped here for lunch because it was on the main road out of Hungerford looked okay and we thought being in a smart place it would be decent (posh people do not tolerate awful food) My partner had chicken Tika, which wasn't very good and I had cod & chips. The fish was grey and barely edible and the chips were mainly end pieces of potato. A waste of money. This brewery distributes food to their establishments and the staff have to do their best. I didn't complain at the table because it isn't the fault of the staff.

Thank you to all the staff especially Tito who gave us the most warm and friendly welcome when we stopped by Thursday lunchtime. So polite and helpful it made a simple meal a real pleasure. It's a lovely old building, tastefully decorated and all very clean. Couldn't fault the food and drinks at all, everything was spot on which is a compliment to the chef. What was an off the cuff stop will be a purposeful detour in the future, a real gem of a place.

Lovely meal out in a relaxing environment, we booked to be on the safe side as the restaurant started to fill up while we were there. The meals were served quickly and were very nice. The whole evening we were looked after by Tito. Would recommend

Booked for Sunday lunch. We have been meaning to do so for some time. Seated promptly, attentive friendly staff, Connie our server was very smiley and helpful. We have had weekday lunch here many times so we know the food is good. .Traditional roasts and other options all offering great value in terms of portion sizes and price. Added to which, there was a great atmosphere with a mix of couples and family groups. Based on our experience we are happy to recommend The Bear Hotel.

I recently visited the Bear with some family and the staff we extremely accommodating, we also we able to bring our dog which made the visit even better. The bar/restaurant area was very warm and welcoming and the staff were very helpful and friendly, we had great service from Anna! The portions were fantastic, the biggest steak sandwich I have ever had and the pies looked incredible, great value too! There is also a fabulous outdoor area and a stunning stream which runs past the gardens, a hidden gem!

Our family held a reunion here last weekend and we had a super time. The hotel staff were all so helpful and particularly the head receptionist who was so good at letting me know when an additional room was available .

Decided to stop at The Bear on our journey for some lunch. First impressions were excellent, well presented exterior sitting next to a beautifully quaint river. We were instantly greeted as we arrived by the manager who’s smile was beaming from ear to ear, what a welcome. She showed us to a table and had a lovely conversation with us asking us about our travels and made us feel at home. We proceeded to order drinks and some lunch and both arrived promptly. The food was excellent. The fish and chips was so hot and fresh and my partners steak sandwich was cooked to perfection. We stayed on for another drink and enjoyed our surroundings watching the staff all speaking with guests and making everyone feel at home. What a great stop at The Bear; we will be sure to visit when we next pass.

Me and my son have just arrived home after spending two nights at the bear due to a burst water pipe in our house! Being local we are lucky enough to know some of the workers and can we just say how amazing Laura’s room in courtyard are!! We stayed in 26 &27 and they were beautifully clean with everything we needed for our stay! She knocked the door both mornings and was friendly as ever asking if we needed anything extra to make our stay even better. We also ate in the restaurant on our first night and our food was amazing! Hats off to Jamo and his staff in kitchen that cooked everything to perfection, unfortunately we didn’t get the waitresses name but she was brilliant too! Massive thank you to all of Team Bear for such an amazing experience even if it wasn’t the best circumstances for our visit!

We’d walked along the canal and through the water meadows to muster a good appetite. The menu at The Bear Hotel is extensive. Took us ages to choose. I think we all had dishes from the ‘lunch club’ menu which is very reasonably priced indeed. Expecting the lunch to be a smaller portion how wrong can you be. Delicious food, good size portions and excellent service. We loved our puds. I didn’t have a coffee but I’d had a soft drink, main course and pud all for £12.48. !!!!!! In my area where I live that would have been nearly double that cost. A first time for us at the hotel but we shall return asap!!!!!!! Loved everything about the hotel and lunch.

Despite being a frequent traveler, I have never felt the need to post a review before. Our experience at this pub has finally spurred me into action.A group of 10 of us had a meal here and, due to our party size, had been asked to pre-order. The mixed platter starters were all deep fried and very disappointing. For the main courses, the Sea Bass was completely overcooked and barely edible, and its accompanying risotto had very few prawns. For dessert, none of the sundaes contained anything recognisable as ice cream and the Bakewell tart seemed to have been microwaved from frozen.We raised this with the serving staff, who were very concerned and passed it on to the duty manager, who wasn't concerned and took no action. The only thing he did do was argue with us that, if there weren't many prawns in the risotto, they must have been very big ones (they weren't).When the bill came, we had been charged full price for steaks that had been specifically ordered under the special offer currently on the Greene King website (edit: apparently I'm not allowed to post URLs, but at the time of writing the offer is still live on the website and has no stated expiry date). When the error was raised with the duty manager, his only concern was how we had found the special offer and he refused to correct the billing error.All in all, we could have saved a lot of money by buying similar food from Iceland and microwaving it ourselves.

Great food, lovely building, friendly staff. Loved being here. They are taking Covid precautions though I'm so inclined to mask every minute I'm not eating or drinking!

Just arrived home after a 2 night stay at the Bear and all I can say is WOW! From the second we arrived we felt at ease and welcomed by the charming Caroline, she was chatty and friendly and her customer service is 11/10, what a lovely lady. Our room was stunning! We stayed in room 41 and we truly felt spoilt, clean and tidy the room overlooked the quaint garden. We ate in the pub itself both nights and the food was amazing, arrived quickly even when it was busy and tasted lovely. The bar and front of house staff were clearly working extremely hard but they were always checking up on us and making sure we had everything we needed. These two nights were exactly what my partner and I needed and safe to say we will definitely be returning when we get some time off! COVID has hit hospitality hard but it’s great to see this lovely business doing so well. Thank you for all your hard work it’s truly appreciated and thanks for making our stay so special.

We dropped in without booking .unfortunately there was a large wedding reception Going on but the staff were accomodating and gave us s table and managed to get our meal order in before the wedding guests came in for their meals .nice place well sanitised .nice food and friendly staff another one to visit .

Excellent restaurant, we didn't stay at the bear but we ate there three days in a row!! The food was delicious, and we would definitely go back there again. I want to give a shout out to Connie and Vee, and all the other waiting staff who were fantastic!! They were very helpful and made us feel at home.

Huge menu and choice. Service ok, food average - you get what you pay for. Pub itself a bit dated, would benefit from a good refurbishment. It’s an ok place to go mid-week if you cannot be bothered to cook, probably not the place to go for a special occasion.

The worst pub lunch since lockdown. Met with friends as this was a halfway point for us and the food was simply terrible. We felt awfully sorry for the waitresses who were repeatedly taking complaints from numerous tables, they clearly had no support from seniors and yet were still smiling. We did in the end have 3 out of 4 main meals removed from bill as we simply hadn’t eaten them. The food was NOTHING like as described on the menu and was missing things listed as sides which we had to highlight . All in all we were incredibly disappointed, headed home for a takeaway instead!

Enjoy a good selection of food, served hot. The hotel inside is quite dark, but there are lots of nooks to choose from if you want a quiet and private meeting or meal. Alternatively there are many window seats that are adequately lit by daylight. There is also a choice of dining outside on tables of 4 or 6. I was disappointed that guests were allowed to smoke near people eating food. There didn't seem to be a separation of smokers and non-smokers and is uncomfortable to ask a smoker not to smoke near those smoking. The Bear Hotel as described has bedrooms and is also a good venue for weddings.

Came in for breakfast with my girlfriend and the hurbie the puppy! We were greated by the always smiling Caroline! Who kindly pointed us in the direction of the bar area. The very lovely jasmine, took our order and prepared our drinks! We ordered the Big breakfast and was not dissapointed! It came out in good time, hot and tasted amazing, the chefs name was Ryan, who is doing an incredible job! Well done Team Bear, we will be returning back to you V. Soon!

Went to the bear with my family last week. I was very impressed with the service especially towards my small kids. The staff was wonderful with them. We also enjoyed the food.

I had an amazing time here! And no doubt my time here was made extra special by our waitress Mia! The staff here really did make me feel like it was their mission to make sure I enjoyed myself. 10/10 recommending to peers. Top notch.

A return visit to our local after lock down! We had a fabulous evening meal including starters and mains along with a few drinks while we watched the Euros in style.The staff were all very friendly with some old and new faces making us feel very welcome.The hotel and bar was very well presented and the food was served hot, promptly and excellent value.The restaurant and bar appeared to have a few residents dining and a lovely crowd.Dog friendly a bonus !

I came in last month for some lunch with friends while passing through hungerford. We had a great meal cooked by Dionne, the food was delicious and we look forward to coming back again soon!

Just want to say a massive shout out to the housekeeping team! This was our first little get away since COVID and it was amazing start to finish. The room was beautifully clean with everything we needed for our stay. Nothing was too much trouble for the 3 girls we saw Chloe, Laura and Mandy do an amazing job and from what we could see always had a smile on their faces! We had a meal in the bar in the evening and was served by a young lady unfortunately didn’t catch her name but again always attentive and answered all our questions! Well done Bear Team!

The Bear Hotel is always our first choice for a good meal. The staff are great and the food is outstanding. Vee always make us feel welcome. The restaurant is very clean and the lighting is soft and romantic. My fiancee and I look forward to our next visit. Thanks guys

We had lunch at the bear today, it was absolutely fantastic. Everyone was so accommodating. Very clean environment, and wonderful meal cooked by Dionne and the kitchen team.

Myself and my partner came into the bear for some food on the way to our holiday home. A lovely warm welcoming atmosphere. We recieved wonderful service from Rachel, very attentive. We really enjoyed our sea bass risottos cooked by Dionne. Thank you to everyone at the bear hotel.

I visited as this place was recommended by friends and so glad they did !I had the Newyork deli with fries. please can you thank Dionne i think her name was, she was really nice along with all the staff.I would recommend this place and will definitely make another visit soon

Came in to get brunch with friends. Vee, Yvette and Iwona were so lovely and accommodating to us and gave us great table service. The brunch was lovely (we had full english breakfasts) made by James and Ryan in the kitchen. Had such a lovely morning, thank you to the Bear Hungerford! See you again soon!
