The Document house is a Modern pub with nice leather furniture. Despite the negative reviews online, when I visited, the pub was quiet, quite clean and the atmosphere seemed ok. There were two real ales on tap – Punter (Upham Brewery) & Swing Low (Fuller’s) at about £3.80 per pint. I had a pint of Punter which tasted nice.

Visited on Saturday to watch the rugby and have a bite to eat. We were not disappointed the food was good quality and plentiful. Would highly recommend Document house for food and watching sport. A friendly atmosphere with fab staff.

Real shame that the current manager can’t take any criticism whatsoever whether it’s about the dj or the sadly ineffectual gluten free menu. I and my friends used to consider this our favourite bar but not any more. On a positive note the music is still quite good, just don’t criticise anything or you’ll find yourself barred.

Me and a friend had planned a fun night out in Newbury and Document House used to be our go to place when Sidney owned it. I was shocked to find we had been thrown out all because one of my friends, who is coeliac has left some feed back on their menu which the owner had obviously taken to heart. I’m fuming...she had ruined a good night because they could not take constructive feed back about their menu?! Will not be going back.

This place is getting better and better all the time. During the afternoon / early evening it has the chilled out lounge vibe - somewhere to chill listening to decent background music. Good place to watch the sport when something is on too. Weekend nights this turns into a proper decent place to drink and dance. Not sure if they still have an age limit but there's never any idiots in here. Makes a nice alternative to the other 'clubs' in town. They've just built a small stage and are getting live bands in which is decent. Great selection of beers and the price isn't too bad either. Massive Gin selection and a smaller Rum one. A nice place to go and chill after work and definitely one to hit on a weekend night

Been to the document house over the years when visiting a friend in Newbury, this is the first time on a Friday night it has been literally dead. We got their about midnight and we were the only ones in their others did arrive later but about 2-3 people! This is a real shame as it didn’t have the atmosphere or liveliness - the drinks are ok but it’s a let down when it is dead!!

Held a party here the staff, food, ambience was second to none .... i can highly recommend great place

Stopped for lunch thought we would try somewhere we hadn't tried before. On arrival was very surprised as it was empty. Grabbed a few drinks checked out the menus and ordered. Menu was good with full range of dishes. Portions are well priced and large. Food was good and tasty. Enjoyed ourselves will go back

Big enough not to get rammed, small enough to be intimate. Great DJ who mixed some great tracks from the DJing days of my youth (early nineties) plus some smoking up-to-date tracks. My bella and I are no longer springs chickens (and she's 13b years younger!) but had a great night. DJ played about 10 requests which didn't empty the floor. Made the night so personal and special. Good to go to these sort of places and not wonder if a fight is going to break out... but when.

Would never visit again, barman said I've had enough to drink even know ive not drunk before entering. Was my first drink, do not go. Place is jokes

Visitamos para nochevieja como en los años anteriores religiosamente. Pagamos la entrada como esperaba en 5, pero luego me dijeron que había un bar gratuito para los próximos 50 minutos. Conseguí mi primera copa y fuimos a conocer a mis amigos en la pista de baile. Celebramos el año nuevo en la medianoche luego después de terminar mi copa volvimos al bar. Antes de que pudiera ser servido fue abordada por el hombre de la puerta con un vendeter en mí que me pidió que venga de fuera, me dijeron que la administración le había dicho que sacaba para tomar el mick con bebidas. (Barra libre) cómo este estaba que no teníamos ni idea, incluso me dijo que yo estoy dispuesto a pagar, pero no sirvió para nada. El director y todo el personal del bar miran como las mujeres que sufren de menopausia, mal humor grosero y destartaladas, no una sonrisa. Las bebidas eran vasos sucios algunos incluso brumoso y tenía manchas de labial stick. Mi pinta era servido en un vaso caliente. Buceo completo sobre todo. Cuando yo estaba fuera era sólo entonces me pareció no sólo me sucedió pero al menos 14 otras personas había pagado para entrar y ha echaron por tomarse el mick con algunas bebidas no sólo tener una o incluso tenía una bebida todavía. De nuevo no dan un bar gratuito de los clientes y luego echarlos para beber. Esta era una estafa en su peor. No hay reembolsos por entrada estaban hechas algunas personas sólo fuimos por 5 minutos antes de que nos dijeron que dejar. Sitio ha sido llevado a la baja.

I visited document house for a friends Christmas night out 11 of us we turned up and not a soul was in there and was told 7 items weren't on the menu one young Msn said they hadn't told the chef were going to be a big party when we asked for the manager a woman came over and was extremely rude st this point it was 8 PM and we knew we wouldn't be out to get a table for that amount of people anywhere else so we decided just to choose something that we could all eat the chef came to speak to us and was very embarrassed about the situation when the food came for meals with a complete disaster The egg on someone's plate was like a Frisby The popodome me with the curry tasted of dirty chip fat and the sausage and mash with stone cold we just could eat it we then asked to see the manager again she was nowhere in sight and left a young man to deal with this he was very fair and gave us all the meals with drinks and said no charge and was apologetic. I wouldn't recommend this place we used to go for food in a regular basis but it's completely gone down hill if you just want to dance And late drink it's okay but if you want to incorporate food do not bother

Went to document house on Sunday for a roast dinner. Was not disappointed. Staff were very friendly and attentive and there was a great atmosphere in general. Food was amazing. Meat so tender. Looking forward to going back again.

You really need to drunk to go in here, it is one of the most hideous places I have had the misfortune to be in.Everything seems scummy and dirty.

We called in for lunch. At the time there were 2 other tables occupied - 1 having their meals already and 1 ordered and waiting. My daughter ordered a cup of tea - no saucer, no sugar and no spoon despite asking 3 times. We all ordered a salad - after 40 minutes of waiting also bearing in mind no other tables were being waited on we gave up. Dreadful service - how long does it take to prepare 3 salads? I would hate to think what this place is like when busy - however we gave up and went elsewhere where we had our order to the table wtihin 10 minutes.

I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. Only six adults and two children. Booked a table. Broken filthy tables and chairs No Fosters Coke that tasted flat and horrible Dance class in same room, they all got half price food. Over an hour wait for food, only one other of party of three in, so not busy. No apologies or updates, just sat like lemons and waited. These where just some of the key points of this visit. So in summary, walk the extra few yards to another pub, or go to the kebab van in the warf. Never ever again.

Just enjoyed yet another Sunday Roast at Document House.This really is excellent food and two courses for £9.95, give it a go.

I visited here with my sister and cousins and had a truly lovely experience. We had prebooked afternoon tea, 2 teas at £10.95 each and 2 with prosecco at £14.95 each. Absolutely worth every penny. Considering it's a really modern venue, they table we had set up had a really traditional feel, down to the table cloth and cute teacups and saucers, all not matching, just as you'd want to see. The food was immense, so much of it, from varieties of scones, sandwiches, cakes and pastries. You'll be hard pushed to finish it! The staff were attentive and helpful but also left us to enjoy the food and each other's company. No pressure to finish up quickly and pay, which i've found is quite rare these days. Such a great find. Will definitely be back...but not for a while, as still really full!

Lunch ,excellent food was great value freshly cooked nice clean venue very attentive staff .Have used this place half a dozen times and been happy with everything on all occasions will definatly go again

Came here for the first time for an afternoon tea, such a lovely place with friendly bar staff! when we arrived we was taken upstairs to which the set up for the afternoon tea was beautiful, the presentation of the sandwiches and cakes and scones was brilliant, we had a lovely afternoon and will definitely be recommending and coming back ourselves...delicious :)

Always a great atmosphere, bar gets a little busy but that's to be expected at a popular establishment. Good DJ spinning great tunes.

Took my family - including 3 children, for a birthday meal on Tuesday night. about 6.30pm. It was empty, so we got great service from the only barman- he was a bit like a one-man band and worked his socks off looking after us. it's a very spacious bar and well positioned in central Newbury. Lots of choice for adults and children and the bar man was very flexible in tweaking orders. It's lots of pub grub, but the icing on the cake is a 50% discount on Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday. The kitchen were pretty slow at delivering the food, but the portions and quality were good - we ate the lot!!Thanks for a good meal- I'm sure we'll be back.

Document House never ceases to amaze with fabulous meals.This time we opted for the Sunday Roast, wow excellent value and for two courses.

We decided on a Meal out at short notice, Document House were advertising half price food Monday to Wednesday, we grabbed our things and off we went, the resteraunt was empty surprisingly but not deterred we ordered drinks and food. The staff were pleasant and helpfull in making our choice, when it came we were pleasently surprised by the quality and quantity, although the service was slow, we didn't mind as we were in no rush, all in all a enjoyable evening with nice food in a nice venue, couldn't believe the bill under £60 for four people including two courses each and two drinks each, would happily recommend this place and we will return.

The food in the Doc house is really nice. For the cost of it, it's one of our favourite places in Newbury. It's modern and chic. The starters are huge and so are the mains. The lasagne is superb, I'm very particular about lasagne and it's probably one if the best I have had. The cocktails are pretty good too and Bogof. The reason for 4 stars and not 5 was the deserts. The starter and mains are great but the deserts are a bit dry. Highly recommend going Mon-wed for half price food.

Under utilised gem in Newbury. The Document House has two distinct characters, during the week it is more of a restaurant with some days having half priced food and at the weekends it turns into more of a dance club. The food is mostly home made and having eaten there several times I can honestly say I've not had a bad meal yet, the portion sizes are very good and the staff are friendly. On a Wednesday evening you can also attend Salsa lessons, consisting of 3 separate classed dependant upon your level of knowledge from complete beginners to improvers which I found to be a good way to meet new friends in the area.

Went there for lunch today...the bartender was very attentive and polite. The food was really good value at 50% off...well presented and plenty on the dish. The atmosphere was relaxed and casual...pleasant lunch... Will be returning. Thank you to the bartender :-)

7 of us dined at Document House last night. We all had a main meal and a cocktail at £8.50 each. Incredible prices for incredible food. The portion sizes are very good and the restaurant itself is modern and tasteful. Will defiantly eat there again. It's our new favourite place.

Went here after taking the grandchildren to the Panto. Felt cold when we walked in and the waitress had a leather jacket on. Seemed strange that on a Sunday lunch time there were only 2 other couples in there. Ordered then she came and said they had no baked beans so the kiddies said they would have peas then they didn't have any mashed potato so they went for the chips then she said they didn't have any jacket potatoes for us so we put all the coats back on. She said what about the drinks you ordered which we had no reply. Went to The Hatchet and had a lovely roast. What a shambles - won't be going here again.

I visited document house on the 22nd dec with a friend to have a lunch time Christmas get together. The food was disgusting , even the waiter looked at the food and said he wouldn't charge for it. Which was very nice but it ruined the lunch. I have since emailed there customer service but as of yet, I have not received a reply.

Food was good went in august 2012, food was delicious but now its gone hill, in the last few years... all the chefs( new ones can not cook properley its a case of ping and sling) but things have gone down hill the value is spot on. I came up last week to visit few friends....and brought few friends up from bristol.cause we all live in bristol. But the staff have got terrible manners and it used to be a very social place... i came with my fiance and few our other friends we had steak but it wasnt cooked right but their isnt any point in complaining because most of the bar staff .... are highly rude and very patronising but its a job for them i think all the staff should be trained .... because the atmosphere has gone down hill drastically.since 2013. But me and my fiance and our friends decided not to eat in their again. That place will go down fast very soon....ppl are only happy when they are drunk. But the food has gone down hill.but we all think their was a excellent chef their and the food was out this world,the food is ok their now but nothing spectacular like it used to be.

Visited Document House for afternoon tea group on voucher bought for a friends birthday an enjoyable afternoon started with a glass of Prosecco then sandwiches & cakes plenty for two then tea & coffee nice surroundings . Have been there to eat at lunch time a couple of times too very nice reasonable prices . Well worth a visit .

Had an impromptu Sunday lunch, had the beef which was quite acceptable, vegetables were a little over cooked and the Yorkshire puddings were sadly rather 'clinical' and disappointing. Would for sure go back if I were in the area. Service was good.

I was served a drink in a dirty glass. i had this changed and the second glass was dirty too! I was supposed to stay for lunch but after two dirty glasses I decided to leave for somewhere cleaner

Passed here many a time without knowing what it was like inside. Finally came here with large group of friends for a planned buffet and drinks session. The decor, atmosphere and staff were all nice. The buffet itself was so so with most of the dishes deep fried. There was a salsa night on at the same time but only one couple turned up. I hope they fared better the following night, which was 'lady's night.'

We went on a Monday lunch time it was half price. Ordered the vegetarian lasagne as wasn't a lot on the menu for vegetarians. Was quite nice but would of been better if they used quorn or soya and not just lumps of vegetables. Side dishes were huge. Would go back

I have visited Document House several times this month, and I have always been delighted with the food. Priced appropriately for lunchtimes, I cannot see why this place isn't busier. The food is good in terms of quality and value for money, and the venue is always clean and well presented. Unfortunately this venue is surrounded by chain-restaurants and I think it suffers for that. Shame. Very good lunchtime venue. Would recommend.

DH is always filled with energy on the regular disc nights even though the people more from late 30s visit it. Nice place to shake your legs.

I've been a regular customer at Document House for many years since it first opened, but I've only recently registered on Trip Advisor, so this is a long overdue review. I popped in for supper on a whim on the way home from work. As always, the food was delicious - a veggie lasagne with garlic bread this time - homemade, piping hot and plenty of it. Prices are good value, but it was a half-price food day so even better value for money. And the staff are fab, always very friendly. I'd recommend it to anybody in Newbury, locals or visitors alike.

Haven't been to Document House for some time, mainly because food used to take so long to arrive. Very pleasant surroundings - lacked background music during the Saturday lunch I went along. Food menu with average pricing. I chose the Homemade Indonesian Curry. I am always sceptical when I read 'homemade' but this genuinely was. Very very nice. Document House is a nice spot for lunch and they've improved the timings greatly. Try it as a change away from the usual chain restaurants (ie. Strada, Ask, Prezzo).

Excellent food from an extensive restaurant. There is lots of it and its difficult to eat two courses.This is our 4th visit in 6 weeks and it just gets better

Called in for some lunch part way through a shopping trip to Newbury.The Document House has a light and airy feel about it with a friendly waiter who welcomed us and took our order.Drinks came promptly enough but food seemed to take a long time, and whilst there were a few people dining I would have expected speedier service. The waiter did apologise for the wait.Food was nice, with standard fare of baggettues and ciabatas as well as jacket potatoes and pasta dishes. When our food arrived it was nice and we enjoyed what we had.Overall average review, which could have been bumped up to very good if delivery of food was better.

This place had been recommended to us, but our experience was not good!The venue itself is pleasant enough, in a slightly minimalist way, with plenty of space between tables. Our 2 servers were very pleasant.However, we had to wait an unacceptably long time for our lunches. The chicken supreme was OK, but rather dry, and the chips with the scampi were very poor. In fairness, the large home-made chips with the chicken were very good.Other members of our party were generally unimpressed.

Sunday the 4th of August we stopped off in Newbury to find Sunday lunch, we came across Document House, what. Fantastic find, we had two courses for less than eight pounds, the roast dinner was perfect, home cooked and piping hot the chocolate pudding was divine. The service was first class and the staff very friendly, the atmosphere was relaxed and everywhere spotlessly clean. Certainly will be going again when we are in that area.

Visit 29.06.2013, 2pmVisited Document House in Newbury for a Sparkling Afternoon Tea via Groupon. When we entered we had the unnerving feeling when you are the only customer in the place. We sat down and were greeted very cordially by the host/waitress. We were poured a very generous glass of sparkling wine each, and about 10 minutes later the tea came out. The crust-less sandwiches were smoked salmon, ham and cucumber and grated cheese and what seemed like tomato relish. These seemed to be the only bits made for the meal. The x5 scones were mini scones you would and could buy in the shops, as were the mini pastries (sure I've seen them in Tescos before) along with 3 mini muffins. No tea was served, which I found a little odd. Didn't seem like they really had much heart at all go into the tea, felt like a tacked on offer they thought up for Groupon.

12 of us from work went for dinner. I hadn't been before and wasn't organising so didn't know what expect.It was a Thursday evening and was quiet in the bar area. Our table was upstairs in a private dinning area perfect for our party size.The staff were friendly and efficient. The food was very nice except that I was served margarine with my bread instead of butter, I was very surprised by this, shocked even. I didnt complain as the rest of my meal was lovely, especially the bang bang chicken.Pleasant evening. Nice food.

If you are in newbury it is a good place to eat on a monday an tuesdayand meals are half price and they are not expensive in the first place. The food is pritty standard wth some better than others. You may have to wait a bite when the are busy

My wife and I visit Newbury often to see our son and his wife and two grand-daughters. Yet every Sunday we have our roast Sunday lunch here - it's just like being at home but without doing the washing-up. There is sufficient choices of starters, main and puddings that will please everyone. We didn't have drinks other than lemonades etc.. As we had to drive home afterwards. But try the beef! The gravy helps to make your meal very tasty and the cost is easy to digest too.

Had lunch here again today, quality food and a reasonable price, far better quality than other corporate pubs in the town. 10/10 .

We have been visiting Document House for quite some time now, it gets better and better. Monday and Tuesday lunch HALF PRICE, Sunday Lunch very, very, good. Our Grandchildren love to visit as well with no complaints 'RESULT'. We are all very, very happy customers. The staff are just the best. Well done all. Sue.

Visited Document House as it was a present from my sister for my wife's birthday. I must admit after reading the reviews here (as I always do for every hotel and restaurant I visit) I wasn't overly impressed with the reviews. But I must admit our experience here was very good. Ok the menu won't win any awards but the food was very nice (I had the onion rings to start and roast beef for main and banoffee pie for dessert), the staff were friendly and the venue itself was modern and spacious, although it was set up as more of a bar/nightclub. I would visit again if in Newbury.

I have had a good Sunday lunch here recently and returned for a Groupon experience. The food was good again. It is in the old 'Brake Brothers' mould but well presented and satisfying pub grub. The staff were obliging and humourous and across the room you could watch (or join in a weekly Salsa event). Great fun! Wine was decent and well priced. All in all as long as you don't have gourmet expectations it is a pub/restaurant that is well worth a midweek visit.

I went on a Monday night to use my groupon voucher, the food was absolutely lovely, but there were no other customers so the ambiance was a little lacking. It's a great shame too because the decor and menu are very appealing, and there's a special offer on a Monday that makes the food even better value for money. Highly recommended, good value and worth a visit.

We booked this restaurant using Groupon vouchers and then read the reviews - normally not the ideal sequence. We are pleased we did otherwise we would have missed the most enjoyable evening meals.I should add that the restaurant functions as a restaurant only Sunday through Thursday and on Friday and Saturday nights they have a disco that begins at 10pm. So if you wish to dine on those evenings either dine early ( say 7pm) or be prepared to share the space with " past the first flush of youth " dancers.The decor is very relaxing, staff could not be faulted, most cooperative and I would give the food 4+ out of 5. I had the chicken wings, a winner - deep fried with a light crisp batter yet tender and moist. My wife had a prawn cocktail, nothing exciting. For main I had the chicken supreme, beautiful, a large breast stuffed with bacon and it must have been poached in milk, soft and juicey.My wife was more adventurous and had the " bang bang chicken" with a creamy satay sauce -very wise selection, large meal. Wine a very enjoyable Chilean merlot.In summary a great find and yes I would recommend it to both family and friends - I have already reserved a table for 7 to share a meal with my family before Xmas. Before that we will go for lunch and try some of their other dishes.

Was appalled when my self and 9 other ladies went to enter the establishment only to be greeted at 9.56 by a pitbull shouting at 4 of my party for only pointing out that they weren't prepared to pay as it was not yet 10pm, they showed them all there phones to confirm the time, and he basically bawled at them and told them they had the choice, at which point two of our party left horrified at how he had shouted at us, as if we had just caused some kind of disturbance! No problem with the management, apart from the need to offer some kind of customer service training! Sort it out, we would be classed as regulars to Newbury but this place is definitely not on our list of places to go any more!

Sunday Roast Luncheon was excellent, considered the best n Newbury. Decor and table lay-out most impressive with linen tablecloths, vases of gladioli and even bowsl of lollys and sweets for the children - most thoughtful. Also the service was friendly and efficient.

Been to Document House a few times for drinks over the years and found it fairly pleasant if a bit pretentious, however a recent visit has put myself and others off ever returning. a small group of us had been in the bar for maybe an hour or two and had spent a significant amount on cocktails and shots - so we were being good customers. Then without our noticing, my fiancee had her full mojito cleared up by the bar staff. Not being a cheap drink she inquired as to who had made the error of clearing up a full drink. It transpired that the manager had taken it! When asked directly he pointed to a drink amidst lots of empty glasses on the counter, which she obviously declined as she had no idea what had happened to it since it left the table. Without even asking, he immediately refused to give us another drink for his error. I then inquired as to why my girlfriend had returned without her drink and asked to speak to the manager. This was when we found out he was the manager. Expecting that I would have a civil conversation with a sensible manager who would quickly resolve an issue, I was quite shocked when I had an erratic man shout at me and then walk away before I had a chance to even say anything. I followed him to pursue my, now, complaint to been ignored and shouted at intermittently until he got so wound up he had the bouncer ask me to leave! I would like to clarify that I barely said a thing to the manager and u never raised my voice, although I had to ask the manager to stop shouting at me several times. I went to see the bouncer on my own accord and I spoke politely with him and explained that all I was trying to do was make a complaint! He was very nice but could only offer the explanation that the manager 'was a bit hot headed'. Not being funny, but that's no excuse for very poor customer services and horrendous communication skills from the manager. I feel sorry for Lakeside Leisure as I'm sure that this guy is a damaging influence to this company.Don't waste your money in this establishment, the management does not deserve your business and will not appreciate it.

Apart from three people drinking, we were the only others there. There was no atmosphere at all and the service was pathetically slow. What especially irked us was the fact that the Document House failed, in spite of our remonstrations, to honour the terms and conditions of Tastecard and refused to discount the starters. A follow-up email received no response and likewise a visit to see the Manager (who was absent) proved fruitless, although I had left my 'phone number. Just don't bother - they don't at the Document House!
