The best restaurants serving British food in South East

We stopped at The Plough Inn for lunch on a Saturday. As it was a lovely day we sat in their garden. Lots of tables in the garden and also a covered area under a marquee. The had a nice children's play area as well. You order at the bar, just need you table number. We ordered a Ciabatta Prawn Marié-Rose, a Ciabatta with Southern Fried Chicken and a Nachos with Three Bean Chilli. All the food was tasty.

Lovely boozer. Great atmosphere and excellent prices, everything you want for a night out. Cheapest round in a week and actually cheaper (and better) than back in the north east.

Love visiting the Standard when I can, you will always get a dam good pint of the black stuff, nice chilled Guinness and to top that the chicken wings are the best.

After a long 3 hour drive on Easter Sunday we were struggling to find a pub or cafe that had small bites/snack before our tank driving experience. Had been to 4 pubs that were closed, not serving food or only doing full sit down service The manager/owner of the pub overheard our request and asked the kitchen to prep us something. Absolutely amazing service. The beef baguettes were delicious. Thank you for being so accommodating. Wish we could have stayed longer a great place.

Wonderful service. Really enjoyable, good value breakfast with the added bonus of listening to the Cathedral bells. Recommended.

Siempre iba a ser arriesgado entrar aquí un domingo por la mañana ocupado, pero me había perdido el desayuno, así que pensé en probarlo. Me senté, me ordenaron y luego esperé. Después de unos minutos de mirar a mi alrededor me di cuenta de que había cometido un error. La comida estaba sentada muriendo bajo las luces, un barman ahogado en órdenes y vasos sucios (que estaba visiblemente abrumado, moviendo la cabeza y murmurando para sí mismo). Les di tiempo de sobra para verme levantarme, ponerme el abrigo y marcharme. El personal era todo niños, eran los ciegos guiando a los ciegos, desesperados.

Great pub, staff are very friendly, nice atmosphere. Will go back to try the food.

The service was attentive but appropriate from arrival, the staff knowledge of the building history was excellent and made the experience a visit, not just a tea and I was made to feel very relaxed with no rush to anything. Everyone took the time to explain the food and drink options and my tea cup did not run dry! I’ve done many an afternoon tea, but Clivedon staff have mastered the art of an experience that was worth every penny and every minute. Thank you all!

We stopped off by chance on our way home and were pleasantly surprised with the menu. The food was absolutely delicious. All the staff were very polite. We loved the idea having a mixed menu choice of western and Indian cuisine. We will definitely be returning.

The guys here need a serious lesson in custom relations and need to learn some manners, amazingly rude. Claim not to have had access to their website for 7 or 8 years, although it was updated last year or to be able to get Google to update their times etc…. find somewhere else

Lovely family meal, perfect for children. We love this place for a family meal because the food is good quality for what you pay for and represents excellent value . The food is really well cooked and our rather fussy children really enjoy it and eat everything served to them which is rare these days. £4.99 for a children’s meal, including a main with two sides and a generous dessert is incredible value. We don’t always like to take a risk going somewhere new as often the food can be wasted. With the red lion and we know what to expect we know the kids will eat what they’re given and everyone is happy. The only downside for me is that every time some food is ready for the service to collect from the kitchen you hear a very loud bell which can become a bit irritating. This is a very minor downside otherwise this place is excellent for a family dinner.

Outstanding meal- everything was utterly delicious. We had the crab and raviolo to start and the pork and salmon dishes for main- I would order all again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them all! Service was also unobtrusive but attentive - a perfect balance. My only slight let down was the ‘elevator’ background music, which dimmed the atmosphere somewhat. I am to return however as the food was sublime and would like to try the other dishes.

Had a couple of parties here, which in the past have been ok, but recently at a family party, I had fish and chips that was cold, I had tasted the end and the fish was broken in half, I mentioned and they said the would heat it up..... For context I have a medical condition..... Waiter left, returned a minute later with the broken fish having been dipped back in the fryer and sodden with oil and inedible, not good, even though I hadn't eaten, annoying as everyone around me was eating and I felt self conscious, but not a problem with said medical condition..... When I went to pay, I said I have paid the £5 deposit each for myself and my partner, so please just take that off my partners meal..... To then be told I had to pay for my meal in full as "it had been cooked"..... After much discussion we came to an agreement, but definitely not the best food or customer service for me..... And stocks of certain very popular drinks were depleted and they were out of stock by 18:30pm

Great spot, perfect long walk to the beer garden where we enjoyed perfect aperol spirits in the sun! Staff were lovely and it was a lovely trip out in the country
