Great customer service would highly recommend staff already welcoming

We arrived towards the end of service on what had clearly been a busy Friday. Mine host, a disarmingly charming young man who introduced himself as 'Charlie', immediately made us feel at home. Charlie, asked us whether we wanted our haddock lightly battered, something I've never been asked in 5 decades of frequenting fish & chip shops. Neither of us needed any prompting & weren't at all disappointed. The fish was melt in your mouth fresh & the light batter to die for. We also couldn't help noticing that a gluten free option was widely advertised. The accompanying chips were not to oily & lovely n crispy. While mushy peas & a clearly home made curry sauce rounded off a very satisfying experience. We shall be returning.

We visited 2/5/25,after being a couple of times before, and had excellent food and service, this visit was well below the other times. Starters were excellent, it was the main courses that were poor, I ordered off the special board, chicken stuffed with Brie, and cranberry topping, which was very good, ordered with seasonal veg, but came with a large plate of salad, waitress came to check if everything was OK, informed her about it, went to check with chef, and returned, and apologised, that chef hadn't looked at the order, and just served it with salad, and asked if I wanted veg instead, but I had eaten all the chicken part, so refused. Partner ordered Thai green curry, and this came with way too many green and red peppers in, and that knocked the edge off their meal too. Whether it was due to new staff, or just went on a bad day, who knows, but has put us off returning again. Like I said earlier, it was excellent the lat two times we went, so can't understand why today was so poor .

We have been coming to the cafe since we moved to the area some years ago. Back then, it was a small, fairly intimate place, with a family feel. Over the years, it has expanded and been refurbished several times. Now, it has a more detached atmosphere: the range of homemade food on the menu has shrunk considerably, almost to nil, and the prices have risen. So, will we continue to patronise it? On the basis of this visit, I am not sure. We had a salad and quiche, with a couple of drinks, for which we were charged nearly £40. That is comparable to some local gastro-pub full lunch menus and therefore probably not the best value. The garden centre is as good as ever, but I would suggest you think carefully about the cafe.

As locals who have visited frequently, we have noticed a steady ‘shrinkflation’ of portions and creeping prices over time! We had a family meal, with us all having 3 courses, which brought a bill over £250. The food itself is good but is accompanied by hefty prices, which makes the shrinking of portions all the more galling. The burger came with about 13 chips - for the princely sum of nearly £18. The management should be careful not to assume this strategy is missed by regulars. The toilets in the men’s toilets are further indicative of the seeming complacency of management. We’ve supported The Rake since it’s reopening but the chat amongst the regulars is it may be time for a wake up call.

We drove here for Sunday lunch on a friend’s recommendation. Ate a tasty soup followed by a huge serve of roast with plenty of veggies. There were five different veg, all cooked well and full of flavour. Mixed roast is also available for an extra pound or two. The other meal was a tasty homemade meat pie with mushy peas. Both meals were well worth the drive, service was excellent and prices were good. Note they’re cash only some come prepared. Highly recommended.
