What a lovely place. We were greeted at the door by the smartly dressed doorman who knew a lot about the theatre. Upstairs is the tearoom, where we were greeted by a friendly server. Lovely decor and authentically decorated. The afternoon tea was lovely. With a choice of teas or coffee. The sandwiches were fresh and the cakes delicious. The scones were some of the nicest I’ve had, with clotted cream and a little jar of jam. Service was great. Lovely experience in a lovely setting

Now I’ve been to the plaza cafe many times it has become a tradition with friends for all things birthday, it was my 40th so 6 of us came for afternoon tea, the venue is stunning and the staff are lovely. I am so sad to say after yesterday we won’t be back, the service was slow, sandwiches muddled up after we asked for some vegetarian and none fish ones and the cakes on the afternoon tea were shop bought with no variety, I can live with that for the venue and atmosphere but oh my god the ending - disastrous Our bill came to £155 fine, champagne afternoon tea is £25 pp All I can say next is TEAGATE, you don’t get refills we weren’t told about this, £10.50 extra was added onto the bill for tea, we were told the following after being made to go and queue up to pay “Someone’s going to have to pay for this tea I can see the teapots with my own eyes” Unnecessary and rude. You barely get a full cup from the shared teapots served with afternoon tea, the plaza need to rethink their strategy with this because it’s just lost 6 customers which is really sad, now if someone would of explained properly with some manners I would of been like oh right ok no problem but the way it was communicated was just rude and spoilt a really lovely afternoon, GIVE FREE REFILS OR HOT WATER WITH YOUR AFTERNOON TEA

We chose The Plaza Cafe's Champagne Afternoon Tea for a special birthday. The venue is sumptuous & very in keeping with the Art Deco period. It offered dietary options & was disabled friendly. The staff were wonderfully attentive & made the Birthday Lady feel very special, the handwritten card was a lovely touch. The Champagne was good quality (usually at these things, it tends not to be) & the food was plentiful and very tasty. The dessert section was particularly well received by all at the table, as were the ham sandwiches. It was busy, so definitely book, it was not noisy though. We had a lovely time & highly recommend it!

There aren’t many places where you can get a decent sandwich in Stockport without it being toasted or cold out of a fridge so my husband and I decided to go to the Plaza. We were met at the door by a very smartly dressed man and went up the stairs to the cafe .The café is Art Decco style which I love. We were met by a pleasant young man and showed to a table, he was also smartly dressed and the female waitresses were dressed in black and white as they would have been long ago. We had a lovely sandwich each which wasn’t expensive and a pot of tea while there was old fashioned music playing in the background. What a delightful cafe.

I would not return for afternoon tea as the 2nd drink that we ordered was stewed by the time we received it. We saw it sat on the counter for 10 minutes. I may return & try something else. Lunch here after the backstage tour. We sat down at 12.30 and our food arrived at 1.15. The waitress had taken the order and brought our drinks and then we waited! She had to check what 'quiche of the day' was which I find a bit annoying I always feel staff should know things like that. The first thing to arrive was someone elses order of afternoon tea. The lunch when it came was good; a cheese omelette and quiche of the day with side salad which had a nice dressing on it. A nice lunch was a little spoiled by the slow service. I admire all people who volunteer and a lot of our charitable organisations would be at a loss without them but if your on the service arm of volunteering you need to give good service. I 'think' the lift which only goes to the first floor where the cafe is does come in at the restaurant end where there are no steps. However, tables, whilst at a reasonable distance from each other all have Lloyd Loom chairs and so space can be tight.

Staff maybe voluntary but that’s no excuse for poor service. The afternoon tea is the best thing they offer, that is very good, but that’s it. Been meaning to visit here for some time. Its like stepping back 80 years in time. The surrounding are amazing. We pre booked on the internet earlier that day. The service was a little slow but very good ( we werent in a hurry) and the food (Connaught afternoon tea) was delicious very filling and not bad value for money.

We visited the lovely surroundings of the plaza cafe/ tea rooms and really enjoyed the elegance of the 1930's brought back to life. From delicious delicate sandwiches to cream scones with a flair. Well worth a visit

My partner had told me about this place and said next time we were in Stockport we must pay a visit. As we entered there is no doubt that the cafe looks stunning. That's where the good news ends. We were asked if we had a reservation and when we said no, you would had thought we had asked the guy for the takings. We were taken to a table which was not laid. All the others were set so nice. After 10 mins wait we orered tea and some food. The staff have no idea of customer service, no smiles, young lads more interested in talking about fashion than service. Such a shame, this place could really be somthing. Oh well I won't get that £20 back.

This is not the first time I have visited, but is probably the last. Significantly, this was a weekday and there were no ladies serving. Previously we have been served at the weekends by very efficient and charming ladies. On this occasion, I arrived 10 minutes before my friends. After being shown to my table, the waiter disappeared before I had a chance to order a drink and I had to wait over 10 minutes, until the time I had booked the table for, to order a drink. The place was only about a third full by the time I left, so they were certainly not rushed off their feet. There were 4 men working out front, and they seemed to spend a lot of time at the bar, with their backs to their customers. The service was ridiculously slow - in terms of asking if we wanted a drink (all 3 of us arrived at different times) and in terms of taking our food order. I had to ask for details of soup of the day, quiche of the day. The information was not volunteered, as it should have been. Do not go here if you want a quick bit to eat. We had to wait ages for our sandwiches!. The food was fine, but could we get anyone to clear away dirty crockery? The waiters didn't seem to think this was their job. They would bring another drink / food and not bother to remove any finished items. The maitre d' wandered round the room, but didn't make eye contact as he walked past. The only way we got crockery removed from the table was to call someone over to take it away. And even then, everything didn't get removed at once. We did complain to one of the waiters, and finally at the end to the maitre d'. Interestingly, someone from another table came up to us to say that she agreed with every single thing we had said. They had more or less the same experience as us. Quite frankly, the whole experience was embarrassing. We had wanted to showcase the place to a friend who hadn't been there before. No chance.

I would not recommend afternoon tea at the plaza cafe! After waiting 25 mins we asked to order drinks, 45 minutes later we finally got a drink. It was an hour and 10 minutes before we got the afternoon tea and they got that wrong by not serving enough for the number people eating. The vegetarian received only cumcumber sanwiches, not exactly inventive. Oh and not once were we offered a drink of tea, we had to ask for that aswell, and the food was gone by the time we got it!

As I love Art Deco it was a real treat to go to the Plaza tea room. It was like stepping back in time. It was packed - such a huge success! I had the most delicious, light, huge, freshly-baked scone with clotted cream and jam, plus sandwiches and tea. The lunch menu was very varied. My son really enjoyed his scrambled eggs and my husband loved his bacon sarnie. The traditionally dressed waitresses and the very smart doorman are all volunteers and have big smiles, are really friendly and welcoming, and very helpful. We had a look at the beautifully restored theatre afterwards. We took my son in a large wheelchair and there was a large lift to accommodate all four of us and the chair. There are two accessible toilets, too, so even though this restaurant is at the top of the theatre, don't let that put anyone off who has poor mobility or uses a wheelchair. Go and see for yourself .... and book a table to avoid disappointment!

The Plaza Cafe is a beautifully restored 30's style cafe complete with wicker chairs, art deco decorations and black and white old fashioned style uniforms for all the staff. The food is great the prices are Ok and the ambiance is brilliant. Just don't go for a fast lunch or afternoon tea as the service is smooth and relaxed and therefore quite slow, but is still worth the visit . We have been many times now and its still good.

As well as being open daily the Plaza cafe caters for special events. Mothers Day meals, for example are very popular and need to be booked well in advance. Run by volunteers. Dietary requirements - just ask. For example, gluten free options are available.

As you walk through the main entrance of the Plaza, a gentleman opens the second set of doors - where there are twenty steps to walk up till you get to the Plaza Cafe...... as you look through the double doors before you enter; it gives the impression of a tea room at a seaside resort in the 1930'sThe area where the preparations are dealt with is at the back of the room and the layout of the table is in diamond formation - single row of tables the a space then a double row with another space and finally a single row on the right hand. All the tables have white table cloths with a sheet of glass laid on top and two clips screwed in on two sides - all that has to be wiped is the glass, there are two different types of pale green wicker chairs - strait back with no arms and an all round wicker chairs, some tables have four chairs others have three. The style is pure art decor of the 30's and to give the air of authenticity - all the waiters and waitresses wore dark waistcoats, white shirt or blouse, black trousers and the half white apron around their waist - the Maitre D wore a black tailed jacket with matching trousers, white shirt, black tie and black shoes. There was a nice selection to choose from on the menu - I had two glasses of fresh orange juice - a tuna mayonnaise sandwich on brown bread with side salad; lettuce - sliced cucumber - sliced tomato - red onion rings and slivers of carrot. As a dessert, I had raspberry roulard - that went down very well, it was mouth wateringThis somewhere that I wiil definitely come back again and again

Yesterday, 16 August 2016, I enjoyed a tea with a friend. Delicious fresh food and friendly, down to earth service from the waitresses. However, the gent in the black tail coat who showed us to our table, needs to pay attention to his personal hygiene and the freshness of his clothes. He smelt. Please, will some of the sensible looking ladies who were the waitresses take him to one side and tell him.

This was my second visit and both were great. The menu is mainly hot and cold sandwiches with a couple of other things. All our food was well presented and tasty. A jug of hot water was provided with the pot of tea which was appreciated. The cakes were delicious and the service was good. All food in realistically priced. It was lovely to be able to talk over lunch without lots of background noise. The renovations are great. How could anyone have complaints sitting in the beautiful Art Deco surroundings. A lovely experience. Well worth a visit and great value.
