We ate here on our first of two nigths staying at the next door Ullswater Inn in Glenridding. The Orangery is a beautiful room. It is spacious. with nice views out. They could have crammed more tables in, but they haven't which gives the dining experience a lovely ambience. The service was very good. So why only an average rating? It's because we didn't feel the food was better than average. We started by sharing foccacia with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. For £7.50 we got two small pieces of average foccacia with a very vinegary dip. It wasn't good and even it had been it wouldn't have been worth it. For main course, one of us had steak and ale pie with seasonal veg and mash with gravy. The steak and ale pie looked like it had been bought in with 1/3 of it served up to us. It looked twice baked. The meat was soft enough but verging on a mush in parts. It tasted reasonable but was not really flavoursome enough, The brocolli and cauliflower were both overcooked. Our other dish was vegan broad bean and pea burger with chips. The 'burger' was a little mushy with a mild flavour. Overall, we enjoyed our dining experience here much more than at the next door Ullswater Inn and the price was similar. However, we felt that it would and should have been so much better if the food had been better.

We ate here two nights out of the three we were staying at the hotel. The first night, two of the main courses had run out, even though we were there at 7.00pm on a Friday! No alternatives were offered and this was very limiting, as they were meat/fish dishes. The following evening, the menu was replenished, though the soup was the same as the previous night. I had the reinstated fish pie and my husband the reinstated lamb stew. The vegetables were well cooked (firm as we both like), but bland and fairly tasteless. No herbs or seasoning... just boiled and dumped on the plate. My fish pie was more potato than fish in sauce, and there was very little sauce for the fish, never mind the bland vegetables! All in all, it was very disappointing, though the surroundings are good.

Delicious food (beetroot falafel burger) and incredible staff, who made a rather damp and scruffy camper feel very welcome on a wet evening. The venue is intimidatingly beautiful when you are underdressed. But the staff were wonderful and my drink arrived before I had got my coat off. The table for this visit had been booked well in advance, for my sister and niece who had a planned stay in a nearby cottage. I, on the other hand, was unexpected until the previous week, but the booking had been amended with no problem and about 5 days notice. I had not been expecting to meet my sister in the lakes, so I literally had "nothing to wear", only bringing clothes for the hills. I arrived earlier than my sibling having walked from the campsite in some fairly enthusiastic rain, but was seated with no problem and nothing but kindness from the staff. The food was very good. For main, I chose the vegetarian burger and was amazed by the flavour sensation of a sublimely designed and presented platter. The staff were absolutely lovely throughout the evening. Next time (and there will be a next time) I'll try and bring at least presentable top to wear, but in truth my appearance bothered me much more than the staff.

We had called up in advance to try any make a booking with the ramblers bar, but we were told that we couldn't make a booking and just to turn up. When we turned up the ramblers bar was closed for a wedding, information that we should have been notified when we called up originally. We then tried to get a table in the Orangery restaurant. Multiple members of the restaurant staff acknowledged that we were waiting for a table and asked if we were staying in the hotel (which we weren't), but seemed happy enough to leave us waiting rather than confirming if there was or wasn't an available table. During this time there was no evidence that they seemed to be checking their reservation lists or trying to see if they had a free table. After waiting for 15 minutes finally somebody eventually said that there was no availability; even though it looked like half the restaurant was empty. The staff were not apologetic about this, and seemed quite rude about how they delivered this news. It might have just been our perception, but we got the distinct impression that because we were in walking clothes and not staying in the hotel that the staff were purposefully being unhelpful. If there genuinely was no availability the staff could have told us straight away rather than wasting our time.

What a disappointing experience that was. We’re visiting Glenridding for the week and on our first night headed over to the Inn on the Lake. As we love our food in the Lakes - the Stamp House and Lake Road Kitchen in Ambleside are 2 or our favourites - we had planned a slap up meal in the hotel’s Lake View Restaurant later in the week. However as we’d made the long drive from Bath that day we decided on something more casual on our first evening and ended up in The Orangery, as the Ramblers Bar was closed for a private function. We weren’t given the warmest welcome by the maitre d’ - only offering us an outdoor table despite there seemingly being ample seating indoors - however given the views of Ullswater we decided to make do and keep our coats on. It wasn’t off to a great start as couple of menus were plonked on the table with no offer of drinks. We settled on a pair of fish pies with a portion of chips to share but sadly what came out was one of the blandest meals we’ve ever had. Despite clearly containing bits of salmon and prawn it tasted of neither. There was no evidence of parsley in the sauce either despite being advertised. The mash was quite stodgy and a little cold and the sauce seemed to have split. The whole thing should have been considerably hotter and a lot more seasoned. The accompaniments were equally disappointing. It was advertised as coming with carrots and fennel, but instead we got some sad looking boiled (or maybe microwaved) carrots, cauliflower and broccoli florets which had been shown no love whatsoever. The chips were also fairly cold and some were slightly undercooked. As we’d had such a long drive and we’re so hungry (and as everywhere else appeared to be shut or busy) we grimly refuelled. No waiting staff came and checked back in with us, so as we’d already been made to pay upfront, we just upped and left once we were done. Sadly that experience means we’re very unlikely to go back to try their fine dining option later in the week.

My wife & I had a lovely afternoon snack here & then booked in for dinner later the same day. The snacks were extremely good: I had toasted teacake with butter & jam & my wife treated herself to the gluten-free sticky toffee pudding. Both were really tasty. For dinner my wife enjoyed another gluten free option, soup of the day followed by feta cheese with sun dried tomatoes. She thoroughly enjoyed it. I chose the Parmesan crusted chicken with warm potato salad - tasty but I thought the chicken was slightly over cooked. I chose the Apple tart with toffee sauce for dessert & that was tasty but falling apart with rather soggy pastry. And it’s those small but important details that result in four stars as opposed to five. I presume the apple tart must have been warmed up in the microwave & you can’t do that with pastry. But service was extremely good and the duty maître d’hôtel was wonderful. If we’re in Glenridding again we would go back & give it another try.

Went to the restaurant for lunch in this beautifully set location. We decided to dine here instead of the nearby cafe to treat ourselves whilst on holiday, when we came across this picturesque town. We greeted warmly at the hotel reception. Unfortunately it was a very poor dining experience, service was slow and we had to chase at every stage of service and it was as if they had forgotten our mains. Had to order my toddlers meal at the bar to ensure he would be fed. And when our food finally arrived, it wasn’t reflective of what we ordered - for example, Moroccan dish, which was described to include ingredients such as cranberries but when the dish arrived, it was a British Indian style curry with a rich unpleasant tomato base, served with pickle and supermarket style naan bread, definitely not a Moroccan dish and not what we ordered. Terrible food and service. Don’t leave bad reviews but emailed restaurant, only to receive a dissatisfactory response.

We arrived a little early and took the opportunity to take some pictures of the Lake and enjoy the stunning views. From the moment we walked in, the Afternoon Tea was just wonderful - the sweet and savoury items were immaculately prepared and tasted delicious. The staff were attentive but never intrusive and it was a wonderful couple of hours. It would give the top London Hotels a run for their money in terms of quality and ambience and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

We booked a table at The Orangery restaurant. We were non residents. We were informed by the first waiter that they were offering food from there 'fine dining' restaurant as well as the Orangery menu. My partner chose the chicken tikka masala and I chose the salmon. What arrived at our table can only be described as slop! Both dishes looked and tasted like they had been prepared at least a day earlier. They were congealed in a layer grease. The chicken was chewy dry and inedible. When we complained to the indifferent waiter he offered to reduce the bill by 10%. It is such a shame because the setting of the hotel is outstanding. The food and service was far from that!

Beautiful building interior and gardens. Popped In for morning coffee and found a beautiful place to sit looking onto the fells. Ordered tea cake and cappuccino. My wife ordered cappuccino and clotted cream scones. The coffee was luke warm at best, almost cold, and watery with little foam. A sorry excuse for a cappuccino! Sent coffee back and waited at least 10mins for coffee to return and my tea cake now cold The gentlemen bringing coffees back presented us with much better looking coffees saying if these were not up to standard then he should not be doing his job. Well unfortunately the coffees were boiling hot and as any good barista knows you don’t make coffee that hot. The coffee was burnt. Lovely surroundings but poor coffee. (Sorry but I really do like a good coffee) and I would expect that from an establishment of this grade. Perhaps some barista training needed. Wonderful gardens and what appears to be a fabulous hotel though I can’t confirm that as we weren’t staying.

We stayed for a superb dinner of local lamb shank eaten in the orangery which was a delight. All the food, drinks and service were stunning. Could of happily stayed here all day. A joy.

Came for tea by the fire after a trip in the rain. Staff was so welcoming and immediately sent us to sit by the fire. Cream tea was excelent with good cake and scone but the best thing was the beautiful views of ullswater lake. Would highly recommend this place

Looking out over the beautiful gardens over the lake to the fells. Not another building in sight. Food was very good and service excellent. We had a room at the the front of the hotel with a balcony. Well worth a little extra. No matter where we were there was always a member of staff nearby to cater for whatever we wanted.

Booked a table for 12 many months in advance as turning 90 is a big occasion. Turned up to the very beautiful surrounds which is the only positive I can really say. Some of us had starters which resulted in 30 minutes of waiting till they cleaned the plates followed by another 30 minute and complaint till the main course arrived. When we decided to tuck in, 11 of us having Beef, the meat was warm not hot and this trend followed throughout all the food including the platter of vegetables. We raised the complaint (our second one following the waiting time) with a member of staff, all of whom were very polite, and the manager came to apologise and offer to re-do the food free of charge. This wasn’t suitable though having already made a 90 year old woman wait over a hour so we had to leave and find somewhere that could fit a table of 12 in on no notice. Would not recommend to anybody.

We arrived at the Inn on The Lake yesterday for afternoon tea and were immediately blown away by the view and surroundings. We were given perfect seats in the orangery, looking out over the lake. The staff were very efficient and helpful, and the food was delicious. Anyone with a sweet tooth would love it. We loved the grounds so much that we left with the weddings brochure.

We had a great evening at the Inn on the Lake Orangerie restaurant, and our dog was also made very welcome! The food was extremely flavoursome, the staff courteous and friendly and the whole ambience of the restaurant warm and inviting. The main reason for our visit was receiving a gift voucher for the hotel, but we will definitely visit again in the future. One of the best features of the hotel is the fact that it welcomes walkers aswell as those who prefer a more relaxed sort of weekend - all customers catered for!!

Popped across the Pennines to spend the day in the Ullswater area, culminating in a delicious prosecco afternoon tea at The Inn on the Lake. We were served in the Orangery where the early autumn views of the lake were incredible. Our waiter was so attentive explaining the format of the afternoon tea as well a giving us a detailed explanation of the delicacies which we were served. Top ups were freely offered. I have to admit the whole experience surpassed our expectations. The customer service as well as the food was excellent. We had a good look around the hotel and grounds and have decided we need to return for a weekend break.

Very lovely setting but not worth the money - probably better value for lunch. There seemed to be a lot of staff but they did not visit the table much. There were six of us in total and they brought a lovely selection of cakes and scones in three tier cake stands. Only problem was we couldn't see each other across the table. This was before the sandwiches.

This is a stunning setting for Sunday Lunch (or any meal). We went with three generations on a very rainy August day, but the setting was just as magnificent as on a sunny afternoon. The design of the Orangery restaurant certainly helped, with its lake and fewll views.

We booked the Orangery for a family birthday. It was three adults and two kids (10 and 13). We arrived at 6pm and were the first there. We were shown to a great table overlooking the lake. The room was very nice with windows all round and comfortable tables.

Stayed here to break our journey from Central Scotland to the Peak District. Had a very pleasant chalet type room at the rear of the property with easy access. Enjoyed a drink and an evening meal in the bar with our wee dog. We both had the sirloin steak with was generous in proportion and quite tasty.Staff friendly as were the locals. Would definitely return.

We dined in Bustro 1871 as part of a short break holiday at the Appleby Manor Hotel. What a lovely break this was. Our first after the Spring and Summer lockdown. The food was really good and the waiters attentive. Appleby Manor itself is a delightful hotel full of old world charm. We are returning there again for my wife's birthday in October. I shall again dine in Bistro 1871 as well as sampling the gourmet restaurant at the hotel on our second night.
