It was my daughter’s birthday on Saturday 12 October and we decided as a family of six to celebrate with afternoon tea. I can honestly say I was very disappointed with what we were served. It appeared the majority of items were bought in and there were no actual proper cakes. The quiche was revolting and sandwiches lacking any finesse - I think whoever has designed the menu needs to visit the Roundthorn Hotel and see what a proper afternoon tea looks like. Very mediocre - won’t be returning.

i've been to the inn on the lake many times as i am a local in Glenridding however my recent visit resulted in me in tears of embarrassment as not only a staff member but a manager approached me and my friends to inform me that my outfit is inappropriate and my cleavage is too much for their bar standards i have not only worn this top before at the inn but to three other bars in Glenridding and it has never been an issue. A woman should never be shamed because of their body type and coming from another woman it was disgusting. i have never ever in my life experienced this attitude, and when asked the bar staff couldn't give me a paper copy of their so called bar standards as there wasn't one.. it really ruined my night however the young man i spoke to was so so kind and said there was no issue and that i shouldn't worry about what i was told. i cannot control how my body is proportioned and do not appreciate being shamed for it i hope you can fix the attitude in your bar :(

We didn't stay the night, so we can't comment on the rooms. The bar and gardens are amazing. The terrace views are absolutely beautiful over Ullswater and surroundings. We ordered the pizza and chips and milkshake, which was delicious. The staff were helpful and friendly. Place is wheelchair friendly. Some parts of the gardens have gravel paving, so they can be a bit of a push for manual wheelchair users. There is a accessible wc, too. Would definitely recommend a visit if you are nearby.

Absolutely AMAZING. Everything from start to finish was fantastic. Hotel rooms were stunning. Ours overlooked the side of the lake which was lovely. Super clean, couldn’t fault it. ALL of the staff were brilliant. So attentive and friendly, they really couldn’t do enough for you and nothing was too much trouble. I’m recently recovering from a broken leg and they brought me ice to the room when I needed it which was so helpful. We celebrated my grandmas 90th birthday and the A la Carte dining area was wonderful. Staff super knowledgable about the food and the wines- which makes a huge difference and just makes you slightly better than the rest. We can’t wait to stay here again. Fabulous trip, fabulous hotel with fabulous staff. Thank you!!

Visited The Inn on the Lake on 11/04/2024 whilst on a break with family and friends at the nearby Patterdale Estate. We went to the Orangery to eat. On arriving we had a warm welcome from the reception staff who pointed us in the right direction. We had 3 dogs with us who were made to feel welcome too with some lovely soft towels to sleep on. The food was top class which was very much appreciated after a long days walk. And finally must say David who was our main server was absolutely excellent so friendly, chatty just overall a brilliant waiter. Five stars from me, my family and of course the dogs.

Enjoyed a marvellous anniversary dinner in The Lake View restaurant here last week with my wife. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, from a decent menu, alongside a pretty extensive wine list. Service was good with the staff being both friendly and attentive. We should say that all the staff were generally excellent - my wife turned up wet and bedraggled the day before to enquire about a dinner booking and the staff on reception were very helpful in making our booking and allowing us to (hopefully) select a table; this actually transpired and made for a wonderful evening especially as the weather was good too. Overall we were delighted with our visit and welcome, despite not being hotel guests, and found ourselves returning later in the week to visit the Orangery Restaurant. A terrific experience and we hope to be back!

What a complete waste of money! Went for afternoon tea as a present for a family member and spent over £170 for what was the tiniest morsels of food imaginable. We all had to get food when we got home as still hungry and we are not big eaters. Also, when I explained that I could not drink tea or coffee for medical reasons, the waiter replied quite abruptly that I could not substitute any soft drink but had to pay the extra for it. Completely unacceptable in this day and age.

Afternoon tea booked for late afternoon. The place was virtually empty but we had a booking and seemingly they were expecting us. Service was fine but not friendly or warm, professional but cold. The good soon came and looked great but it did seem like the sandwiches were prepared earlier and had dried out somewhat. The scones were served cold and were as dry as could be. Not pleasant to eat and quite disgraceful for £32. It simply felt like we were the last to be served and everything had sat all day, the scones likely prepared a day or so before. When I paid I mentioned this as half the scones and sweets had not been eaten. The response was that she would feedback to the chef and did we want a take out box? Really? I just told you the food was dry and bordering on stale and the response was she thought we may want to take them home. In short, for £32 per head I think it reasonable to expect freshly made food and if you cannot deliver on that don't take the booking.

The ratings above are irrelevant as we didn’t get to go. My daughter had booked afternoon tea on 19th March. During the night she became ill as unable to go. She was really sick in so much we had to book another night away as we were staying in Keswick. I rang to see if we could move it to another day it had been prepaid and I wasn’t even asking for a refund. This was refused . I also asked if I could go and collect it this was refused too, they don’t have a take away license. If I sat at the table I could put it in a box. That doesn’t look good when people are enjoying their meal. I know there are terms and conditions but as my daughter was poorly I thought a bit of discretion could be taken especially as I spoke to the Deputy Msnager.

This was a big deal for us as it was a birthday treat for my wife who loves an afternoon tea. On balance the quantities of food was good but the quality particularly the savoury wasn’t great. Sandwiches such as cheese and chutney, had no chutney. Turkey sandwich had a bit of gristle and bone in the sandwich. Brown sauce had turned from a sauce to a liquid. But sweet section was really tasty and there was loads of choices and all were good. Probably on the whole one between two would have done. Biggest downer was the service which for such a nice hotel wasn’t the best if I’m being honest. Sorry about this as we really thought the ambience of the room was great. Sorry but thank you.

We visited the hotel to celebrate my baby shower with an afternoon tea on 23/9/19. The sandwiches were very basic and tiny with only enough for around 2 sandwiches each. The cakes and scones were very plain tasting and some actually not tasting very nice at all.. also, like the sandwiches, there was only enough for around 3 mouthful sized cakes each. We were then hit with the bill of well over £400! (£22.50 each plus one drink per person) I was shocked, it wasn’t even worth anywhere near £100... We definitely didn’t receive quality or quantity. Over all we were very disappointed and will not be returning.

We visited the Inn on the Lake recently for afternoon tea, which in essence is such a simple meal service, in fact does it get much easier? We booked a table for 4 people 3 weeks prior to arrival for 2.30pm. Yes we got caught in traffic and so arrived about 10 minutes late (albeit that we did call on route to advise them), but we were seated by 2.50pm in a lovely window view table. Our tea order was taken and served within 10 minutes, but for some reason we waited a further 30 minutes before any food was served (don't think at this stage that they were under pressure, as there were plenty of staff visible within this area). The weather outside was beautiful, the conservatory style area we were sitting in was very nice, the view was glorious and the food was really good; all the elements for a perfect afternoon tea ... well except for the service! Why oh why is it so difficult, to get something so simply as customer service so wrong! The food and beverage industry has long since held with the belief that a customer check back should be performed to clarify that everything is ok with your meal; it also serves as an opportune moment for the venue to try to achieve an upsell opportunity with the customer, for example to check if they wanted any additional drinks. Unfortunately we didn't get a check back (sorry that's not true, we got a check back after 1 hour and 30 minutes, just as we were waiting to pay the bill ... which really amounts to a polite way of the venue saying we want the table back now) and yes two of us wanted a glass of wine to go with our meal. We had to go to the bar and ask for a wine list and subsequently order our wine at the bar (which I am more than capable of doing, but that's really not expected from an AA 2 rosette venue), even though the staff were floating around. Why you may ask didn't we ask a member of the floating staff team, well that's because they seem to have perfected the art of the 'long stare' (that's the art of looking into the distance and ignoring what's going on around them ... including the polite "excuse me" which we tried on a number of occasions). Our bill for £120 was presented and I duly went to pay it. When asked if everything was ok I said that the venue and food was very nice, but sadly the service was very disappointing. The cashier (who didn't seem to be having a great day, as see berated a member of her own team for getting an order wrong whilst I was waiting at the bar) spoke with another man (the supervisor) who asked what was wrong. I explained to him the pitiful service that we had received, citing that it was such a shame and a real negative in what otherwise would have been a perfect afternoon. After disappearing for a few minutes to speak to reception he returned explaining how sorry he was, that this wasn't an example of their normal service, that he really wanted to welcome us back in the future and so he reduced our bill to £111. Customer service is so easy to deliver, but it sours your experience when it goes wrong. Much as I was told that this wasn't the normal service level offered by this 4 star lakeside venue, unfortunately our experience was very much different to what the Inn on the Lake stated and I have to say that even their £9 discount won't take me back to this venue ... such a shame!

We went as a group of 8 just before the school holidays for afternoon tea. I had been the month before and had a lovely time. We booked for 2PM. and recieved our food at 2.50PM. We checked twice. First we were told they were busy and we had to wait our turn. Second time I was told everything was made fresh and I would be complaining if it arrived stale. We were celebrating two big birthdays and had hoped for a perfect afternoon. It was busy. There was a wedding and a helicopter on the lawn. However walk-in guests were being served before us. You would hope if you make a booking with a pre-set menu the kitchen could anticipate that order beforehand. We had asked for prosecco afternoon tea and had to ask again for the alcohol when it hadn't arrived after 30 minutes. We were not charged for this however we were not notified of this until we settled the bill. Had we been informed it would be complimentary as an apology for the wait perhaps that would have appeased us somewhat. The fact is they did not charge for the prosecco nor did the staff ever offer a genuine apology. We had a booking for August but have cancelled it now. Such a shame.

Stopped here for afternoon tea with friends. Sat outside. Beautiful manicured lawns. Ordered tea and scones. The tea arrived. We waited five minutes before pouring it. After another 10 minutes, I went to find out where the scones were and saw the waiter with them on a tray so followed him outside. He was looking around for the table number on a wooden spoon. I asked if it was for table 10 and he said yes so I said, “oh, we are over here”. He said, “oh I can’t see your spoon!” I replied there was nowhere to stand it up. He put the scones down and tried putting the spoon in the table - finding out that it didn’t stand up. I mentioned that we had been waiting so long that the tea had gone cold. He just ignored me. My friends then had to ask for knives. He brought them back but I thought his attitude was rude. Another waiter came later to clear the table who was very nice. A few minutes later, we had to pick our bags up from the floor when a waitress emptied the dogs water bowl on the ground and water was running under our table! Not what we expected for a hotel of this calibre. The scones, however, were beautiful.

We visited the Inn on the Lake with my extended family including my elderly grandparents for afternoon tea. Whilst the afternoon tea was average at best, when our order was incorrect (received 6 afternoon teas rather than 7), the behaviour of the waiter (who's job title said supervisor) was awful. Despite being a paying customer I was made to feel that I was to blame for the situation. He offered no apology, consequently I felt uncomfortable for the rest of the afternoon.A very disappointing experience, the only positive I'm able to share is the beautiful surroundings. If you looking for a traditional Lake District afternoon team I'd advise that you look for another venue.

We booked well before to be sure to get an afternoon tea here on the Bank Holiday weekend. On arrival it was packed and there were no marked disabled parking bays anywhere. I asked at reception and was told that floor marked bays were not possible at the entrance because of the gravelled surface - why not put up signs then, on small poles at the edge of the grass alongside the reception area asked I? Well, if you let us know in advance that you need blue badge parking, we can put a cone out to save you a space, was the answer. Not sure that cuts the mustard - surely there should always be Blue Badge spaces marked up? Not only for 'drop in' customers as well as those booked, but because we want to be treated as everyone else and not have to always call ahead and make special arrangements. Other hotels manage to do this.

We went for afternoon today and unfortunately it was not as good as we expected it to be. I had to ask for our order to be chased up after waiting for 35 minutes. When it arrived, we were not given knives for the scones or spoons for the desserts. No-one came to check on us so I had to ask for the missing cutlery. The bread on the sandwiches did not taste fresh-seemed stale. For nearly £22 a head I expected better. One gentleman was very busy trying to serve everybody, whilst another two members of staff did not seem to be doing much at all. Probably the reason for the poor service!

Took my daughter and granddaughter who were visiting from Australia here hoping for a special afternoon..... Obviously the scenery was amazing but that’s not under this restaurants control. We were served our tea half an hour before the food arrived so it was cold I had to ask for fresh tea when they finally served the food. The food itself was more like something you’d find in Morrisons with sachets of butter and jars of jam. There was some sort of lemon posset in tiny shot glasses which the spoons on the table were too big to use again had to try and attract a waiters attention to ask if there was something of a more appropriate size to allow us to taste it. I have to say the scone was delicious and I’m sure the lemon drizzle cake would have tasted good if it hadn’t fallen apart when lifted off the plate. Really for the price the service was slow and inattentive and the food was mediocre, boring and bland.

Staff very welcoming into the pub. We sat in the lounge bar and had food and drink. Had the Sweet Potato Curry which was on the specials menu. Quick service and the food was really good and great portion size!

Stayed here to break our journey from Central Scotland to the Peak District. Had a very pleasant chalet type room at the rear of the property with easy access. Enjoyed a drink and an evening meal in the bar with our wee dog. We both had the sirloin steak with was generous in proportion and quite tasty.Staff friendly as were the locals. Would definitely return.

We met family for lunch a half way meet up to celebrate my son’s 18th birthday. We were very well looked after and all the food was lovely. Thank you so much for chilling the champagne for arrival, we will be back.

We dined in Bustro 1871 as part of a short break holiday at the Appleby Manor Hotel. What a lovely break this was. Our first after the Spring and Summer lockdown. The food was really good and the waiters attentive. Appleby Manor itself is a delightful hotel full of old world charm. We are returning there again for my wife's birthday in October. I shall again dine in Bistro 1871 as well as sampling the gourmet restaurant at the hotel on our second night.
