Stopped off for dinner. Really nice food at a fair price.. Surprisingly very busy for a Wednesday night. Good atmosphere.

Just called in for lunch which was nicely cooked and well served. Nice oldy world feel, which it is of course, and comfortable seating. Staff were all helpful and obliged with all requests made.

Staff were lovely, and the atmosphere was very friendly and pleasant. Just had drinks and scones which were well made. Everything was good. we wished we had a meal as food looked lovely. Could recommend.

Booked in for a Sunday dinner. They were very welcoming and made such a fuss of our dog. The service was excellent and the food delicious. Definitely go back.

Recently had a nights stay with our dog. We had a lovely stay, staff very friendly and helpful,food was really good,breakfast was great too. We had a comfortable nights sleep. Could not ask for anything more.

I really enjoyed this venue. We went on Sunday for our lunch. Didn't book ahead and were told they had no spaces left, but they managed to squeeze us in! If recommend booking in advance. The food was lovely, best beef I've had in ages. The service was brilliant and there was a great range of food and drinks on offer.

Rang late to have an evening meal for two adults and our dog. Staff were extremely helpful even helping with directions and parking. Location is ideal next to the river, very warm and welcoming. The food was outstanding. The steaks were the best we've had in a long time, even the sides. That good I asked where they buy their steaks from, no surprise, an excellent local butcher, just love when businesses buy local. We bought some the next day the quality was fantastic. The Crown and cushion is an ideal place to stay and eat.

I didn't stay here but had a meal so can't comment on the rooms. The bar and food area is really nice. I highly recommend the hot beef with gravy sandwich...friendly staff and good value.

This is a good place to relax and get a bite to eat when in Appleby. Be warned though, portion sizes are not for the faint-hearted..!

What an amazing place. I only stayed one night in the loft, and it was incredible. It was tidy, clean, and warm. I am quite tall so the ceilings and lights were low at points. The pub below was also really good. The staff were friendly, also dog friendly, so there were lots of cute dogs around. The breakfast was included and had a nice selection. I would definitely recommend the crown and cushion inn.

We were there when the sirens went off for floods we had no electricity and the TV went on the blink. The next day the breakfast was cereal and orange juice. On the other side , the hotel bedroom was brillia itint, the evening dinner was delicious, the service and friendliness was second to none and when we finally got a breakfast it was scrumptious. We are going again.

All the staff were really friendly, especially when the river threatened to flood. Sandbags and information were offered and nothing was too much trouble. The apartments we were in were very well appointed and easy to use and relax in. The walk-in showers were lovely and the really big bath sheets hit the spot! Parking permits were provided and meals were available at the pub.

Superb little place with amazing food and great atmosphere. Staff were lovely pub was clean and tidy what more can you want.

Lovely food at a reasonable price

Stayed overnight on a drive back from Inverness to Essex. Perfect location, lovely little town just off the A66. The staff and manager were all really nice and friendly. We stayed in Room 1 above the bar/restaurant on New Year’s Eve, so thought we’d need the earplugs provided, but no…by 10:30 pm all was quiet. Room had a great superking size bed which was very comfortable. Unfortunately I’ve had to only give the room four stars as it was pretty tired, with a tiny shower in the en-suite…so small my husband couldn’t move inside it, so no shower for him! Oddly, the toilet and hand basin are very low down, which felt very weird. Food was very tasty, including the full English we had in the morning. For the price we paid it was excellent, and would definitely stay here again when breaking our journey north or south.

Brilliant place to stay. Our room was spacious and comfortable. Breakfast was great, I can recommend the eggs benedict. The hotel is in the middle of Appleby, convenient for the castle, the church, the almshouses, restaurants and shopping. Appleby is good point for accessing Penrith and the Lakes.

Stayed in cush bank, was an absolutely fantastic place, stunning, comfortable, peaceful. Highly recommend. Ate at the pub a couple of evenings, food and staff, were brilliant, no complaints from me and my lot. Thank you

We rented out the house a short walk away belonging to the Crown & Cushion Inn. We had a lovely comfortable stay in the wonderful house they were renting out. The staff were wonderful, friendly & very helpful at the Crown & Cushion Inn, food was good, most definitely worth a visit.. Further to this, we were made to feel most welcome, I also accidentally left a nice pack of playing cards behind, they called me to let me know and posted to me sraight away, I was so pleased and grateful. A similar thing happened to me at another pub/guesthouse recently, they weren't so helpful, I'd accidentally left my wallet and spare car key fob behind. The anxiety they caused me because they were making it so difficult in returning it to me.

Stayed here for the weekend, the rooms are lovely & spacious, decorated well, it was the small touches that helped cotton buds, cotton wool, tissues in the room. The bed was huge & very comfy. Breakfast was great good choice. We ate here one night food was delicious good portions. The whole time we were here the staff couldn’t do enough for us. We will be back.

Just had two day's away in the cottage lovely clean well proportioned comfortable beds and ate both nights in the pub and had a lovely breakfast and a special thanks from masie the cocker spaniel who was well looked after nothing not to like was brilliant thanks again matt andrea and Maisie dog looking forward to returning

Had the opportunity to stay here recently and it was a pleasure. I stayed with my adult daughter and her small Shih Ztu dog. We had a twin room that was very modern and clean. The staff were excellent throughout with nothing being too much trouble. They were able to direct us to free overnight parking too. We ate in the restaurant and whilst the food was typical pub fayre it was good and very reasonably priced. We met some lovely local people and have made a promise to return.

The only disappointment was the weather! Booked for lunch, plenty of space, good attention to Covid measures. Good pub grub, the pie was exceptionally good full of meat & very tasty.

we were a family of 8 in the cottage and the apartment plus dogs, made to feel very welcome and Julie went above and beyond to help us in anything we needed. Was lovely with the dogs, nice bowl of water brought for them in the garden which was a nice touch.beautiful breakfasts and lovely evening meal, will recommend to anyone. The man behind the bar was so welcoming and made us feel very wanted, which created a nice atmosphere

We came up to view a property in the area and wanted to take a good look at Appleby as the nearest village/town to the house. What a delightful find. We walked in, 3 hours before our due time as the journey up from the south was far better than expected. Jan greeted us, was charming and showed us to the lovely Cushion Cottage, next door to the pub. The staff could not have been nicer. We had a walk around Appleby first followed by a delicious meal. The cottage was superb with 2 bedrooms, a lovely living area and kitchen and was spotlessly clean as well as being decorated in contemporary fashion. The bed was really comfy and loads of hot water in the morning. Breakfast was delicious, served by a charming lady called April. The upshot is we are buying the house in the area. Fantastic place.

Lovely meal well cooked steak and prompt service for a busy Saturday night. All the staff were lovely and had nice chat with some locals who also had a dog

We ate as a family of 5. Menu had a good selection of some classic british dishes and more exotic dishes too. Food was fresh and tasty and service excellent. We will return.

I was visiting family for 2 days and I was extremely impressed by this pub with rooms. The staff are incredible, they're so friendly and so careful in all of their Covid measures. After a 300 mile drive I was made to feel extremely welcome and felt very safe and well looked after. Great food - we had a meal outside in the heated and covered beer garden with the wind and rain lashing down, but that didn't dampen our spirits and I had an excellent burger. Super cumberland sausage for breakfast which set me up for the day. Cosy room and was nice to escape everything for a few days. Once again, all credit to the team for all they are doing - these places are the lifeblood of our country, and I wish them every success.

To celebrate the new phase, came for our tea tonight.This is the best pub in Appleby without question. And I can say hand on heart, the best COVID policies and adherence.Had a fantastic Xmas meal tonight , enormous portions.Always fabulous staff and ambience.My Labrador had missed their dog menu massively.

We stayed for 2 nights in October, myself, husband and our dog. A lovely hotel room, really well equipped and very comfortable. Really lovely place to stay, great decor, fab location and lovely vicinity outside with shops, cafes and pubs nearby. We loved the area - lots of super walks. Extremely dog friendly, offered water and lots of fuss in the bar. Staff were very good. Breakfast was tremendous, our doggy enjoyed his sausage too! The only thing we weren't absolutely struck on was the evening meal, it was perfectly edible but not brilliant we felt. All in all, a great place to stay at, would definitely recommend.

Just back from an overnight stay here and it was absolutely fantastic. Its a very dog friendly hotel, our greyhound was welcomed the second we walked through the door, he even got his own doggy food menu. Hotel room is lovely and has everything you need. Bed is extra spacious and comfortable. Food was lovely and the staff were excellent, very attentive and friendly. They followed covid procedures incredibly well, could not have felt safer! It's located just beside the river so had a lovely walk down there. My Husband and I, and our pooch, will be back here again real soonFabulous stay!

We visited here after a walk round Appleby attracted by the dogs welcome sign. Soon met by staff at the covid sanitation point. NHS scan qr code easily located. Given a choice of tables and chose the aptly named snug. Staff explained their simple but good procedure and we were left to choose.Mega Breakfast bap and posh fish fingers in tarter sauce were soon ordered and delivered. Excellent food in good portions, tempted us onto scones with cream and jam DELICIOUS Coffee and tea were adequate but didn’t tempt us to a refill The overriding impression was of how covid aware and secure their process and procedures are tied to good honest value for money they are, and the fact that the dog got a bowl of water

Spent an excellent weekend at the Crown and cushion, comfortable rooms and clean.Staff are exceptional covid aware and pleasant .The breakfast was excellent hot and great choice. Will return soon.A JEM

Pasamos la noche nos recibieron por la tarde y nos guiaron a nuestra habitación en el segundo piso, que era enorme comparado con algunos en los que nos habíamos alojado. Teníamos todo el piso para nosotros solos, bajamos las escaleras para tomar una bebida con los códigos de covid completos en su lugar y pedimos una bebida que llegó de inmediato, la cena muy amable y servicial estaba incluida en el precio y comimos pastel de carne con verduras y puré, que era genial, no podía culpa! . Nos alojamos para tomar algo en un ambiente cálido y acogedor, el personal siempre está dispuesto a ayudar. después de una gran noche de sueño, nos recibieron con un desayuno completo que estaba caliente y sabroso, ¡una gran estancia en un pub se quedará de nuevo! ! ! !

Visit here a number of times during our stay in Appleby, for lunch and dinner and never disappointed. Food is really good and great service. Would certainly recommend it.

On each occasion we were very impressed by the social distancing measures in place. First visit we had steak, second visit steak and ale pie. Both meals excellent quality and value for money.

4 of us called in on a wednesday afternoon. The staff were friendly and helpful. We had various nibbles inc the best nachos we have ever had. We would all definitely recommend this pub.

Returning from Glasgow we nipped into Apleby and had some lovely food and drinks. Excellent Covid19 precautions in place. Staff were great 👍🏻

We moved to the Appleby area a couple of years back and were really happy when this place reopened after refurbishment. The food is both tasty and good value - I often have the sirloin steak, medium, and it's always cooked perfectly. My wife, who's picky, enjoys the nachos and the cajun chicken. The beers are great - Cumbria Way and Trooper are recommended. There are several big screens for sport, mostly football, but the sound is not necessarily on in all the rooms so it's not bedlam. It has a good system for serving people in this post-lockdown world - they clean the tables properly and discourage people from hanging round the bar area. A lovely pub.

Nipped in today, lovely little dog friendly pub! Definitely recommend popping in, think we got served by the owner/manager and he was lovely. Went and got our dog a bowl of water and kept checking back. Definitely would come back when we come to Appleby again :)

I went in for a meal and ordered the Steak And Ale pie. It came with vegetables and french fries. The carrots were lovely. However, the fries and garden peas were both dry. The worst part though was the Steak and ale pie. The meat was extremely salty and inedible. Needless to say I left the majority of the meat even though I was starving. I waited for the waitress to come over to collect the plate and registered my complaint. However, all she said was “oh I’m sorry about that but I will tell the chef”. I had expected some gesture to show some sort of recompense but nothing was forthcoming. I left with the distinct feeling that they don’t care if you had a bad dining experience so I will not be visiting this establishment again and if you have any sense anyone reading this should visit one of the many other eateries in Appleby. By the way I felt extremely thirsty and ill for the rest of the day.

If a noisy beer garden & pub grub is what you’re after, then go here. We were asked for our details on arrival & we expected masks to be worn (as in Scotland) but felt quite uneasy that no-one wore them here. The tables have a good green/red dot system if you need attention from staff. We had originally chosen to sit outside in the sunshine, but there was a large party next to us making conversation difficult sowe moved inside (as did another couple). I had fish, chips & mushy peas - very disappointed. Fish was watery & tasteless, fries hard & not very warm. I should have mentioned it at the time, but we had driven for 6hours to get here & I really couldn’t be bothered. Although staff were friendly, they didn’t seem to appreciate our custom, we left without any communication with staff. Much better experience at Ashiana up the road next night!

Whilst visiting the area we booked into here to eat. The staff were friendly and stuck to strict covid rules by taking contact numbers from every party who attended. The service was quick and efficient. The food was good quality for the price. We were disappointed that they had ran out of one of the pudding after ordering and due to a limited menu there were not many alternatives. We would visit again if in the area.

Hubby booked a night here for my birthday. The staff were brilliant. The food absolutely gorgeous and the bed is probably the widest bed I have ever seen. The chocolate brownie dessert is to die for. Covid 19 is taken very seriously here and every precaution is taken to keep customers and staff safe. We are already planning a return visit later in the year.

We really enjoyed our evening meal here. Loved the fact that we had such warm welcome and that our drinks order was taken straight away. The lady who was running the front of house really did a great job. Food was very good and their green/red ordering system worked well. Our waiter was really friendly and we would definitely recommend.

We stayed at the crown and cushion as part of our 5 days away. It was a nice end to our trip celebrating my wife's 74th birthday. All the staff were great very welcoming and chatty. Our room was comfortable and clean and had everything we wanted. We had a meal from the covid limited menu and it was good, but for me the breakfast was superb,all cooked to order and all delicious. Our of our five nights away we both rated it No1 on our road trip, also what made the trip was the friendliness of the locals, we a!so visited the hare and hounds for a few pints of John Smiths,our visit to the Ashiana Restaurant was the creme de la creme,fantastic food. Loved the location and our 2 days of relaxation.

Myself and a friend dropped in for some food and a couple of drinks whilst staying in a nearby hotel. We weren't expecting much other than some basic pub grub but what we got was a very impressive meal.Staff were all so friendly and chatty and we even got one very nice lady to save us from a very scary wasp that was trying to join us!!!The system in place for covid-19 restrictions with the red and green card is genius and I definitely think more places should adopt this practice.Loved the heated beer garden also.Would definitely recommend to anyone who is visiting Appleby.

Despite the current Covid situation, we felt safe eating at the Crown and Cushion. The menu is reduced from the usual one, but that's understandable. Between us we had the fish and chips and the cajun chicken - all really well prepared and presented.All the staff that we saw wore masks and regularly used hand sanitiser before touching anything. As our first pub visit since lockdown eased, we felt perfectly safe.Should we ever pass through Appleby again, we'd definitely go again!

To put it simply, this is a lovely pub-inn in the heart of Appleby. It has basic accommodation at very good prices, fantastic food and amazing staff. The people who work here are lovely and friendly, obviously care about where they work and the people they look after, and will literally go out of their way to ensure you are happy. Plus they all love dogs! What more could you ask for? I can't recommend this place enough. All I hope is that hundreds don't decide to book now, as I want to make this place a regular stay-cation destination :)

I can't rave about this place enough, from booking in to arriving, the extra safety measures taken for covid19, the hospitality and friendliness of the staff to the food. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a 5 star establishment, the rooms are basic but great and have everything you need. What makes this place is truly the staff. No-one could do enough for us from start to finish. It is the best place I have ever been if you're travelling with a dog/pup (aka furry child). Oh also, the food is so good. I had beef and ale pie my other half had gammon steak, food was great, waitress service, very covid-19 contious plenty sanitiser and following track and trace guidelines would deff recommend

We had a visit to this pub the night we stayed over in Appleby, We called here for food, the food was lovely we both had cumberland sausage chips and peas, it was cooked lovely. There is a wide variety of things available on the menu, so we had plenty to chose from. There is also a sweet menu, however we were both to full after our meal. The staff were friendly, which made the whole experience of us being there a pleasant one and we will definitely call there again.

Being anaphylactic I had to check as usual my food had a great meal me rustic hot beef roll. Husband a steak best cooked steak in a pub for ages. Referb spot on great staff atmosphere and food

We have just returned from an overnight stay. We wanted something cosy and friendly and that's exactly what we got. The staff couldn't do enough and made us feel welcome. We had our daughter's dog with us last minute. Soon as we arrived he greeted us and Brian. We had a lovely sandwich dinner recomend the beef and cajun sandwich. We went out on some lovely walks alongside the river. At night we had the two for 17.00 meals couldn't fault it. Very quick and efficient service. We even left our dogs bed while we went for a walk and returned back to our place. Rooms were clean, tidy and modern with a big screen tv. BREAKFAST was the best we have had for along time. We shall most definitely be returning again in summer. Thankyou for your hospitality to all the staff from Sue, Ian and dog Brian.

We stayed here for a couple of nights last week, when Appleby had just been flooded. April was absolutely lovely, nothing was too much trouble for her. Our room was very clean and comfortable. The breakfast was delicious with lots of choices. We had dinner here one night and that too was lovely. I'm so glad we booked to stay here.

Came in for evening food, but not too hungry so opted for 3 starters to share which were very nice especially the fish strips. Very friendly place.

We were unsure of this Hotel when we first walked in. It looked like it had not been updated for some time. There were several customers present when we arrived. We found a comfortable seat for some lunch with a view of the snooker table. We enjoyed eating lunch as we watched people play.

this is mostly catered for diners even the bar area is laid out for diners so dont go if you are wanting a lively night.

My partner and I stayed at the Crown and Cushion for 2 nights in room 2. The staff were friendly and attentive. The room lovely, cosy and decorated very tastefully. We had dinner on the first night, my partner had the scampi and chips and I had the Cushion casserole, absolutely delicious. The bar area is lovely, very well designed, a mixture of quaint and modern. Breakfasts were also delicious, the breakfast bacon roll was heaven, coffee perfect. We would definitely recommend.

Used a Groupon voucher for a cheap night away. Nothing in small print for a Saturday supplement but we were charged £20 by the pub extra. However, good selection of drinks in a good bar. Room clean and practical and a very good breakfast provided.

We visited Crown and Cushion for a charity event at Appleby Castle. The rooms at Crown and Cushion were so spacious and comfortable. I was very pleased how tidy everywhere was and the pub itself was just so relaxing and snug. There are only 3 rooms on the premises. However, if you are staying out late, you can retreive a front door key from the staff.

Amazing food, me and my partner visited this place whilst staying at a site near by. The food its self was amazing and cooked perfectly and the woman that served us was incredibly friendly and helpful, I would definitely recommend this place!

Este es un pub adecuado. Gente amable, sirve buena cerveza y buena comida por personal amable. Pasamos un domingo por la noche y la zona del bar tenía el fútbol. Mi equipo muy felices días. Las bromas fueron geniales y amables. La cerveza estaba muy bien cuidada y recomiendo mucho las cosas locales. Tienen noches temáticas de comida y el domingo fue pescado con patatas fritas. No fuimos tentados, pero los que parecían amarlo. Durante el día, parte del pub se entrega a una cafetería.

Attended with other couples and despite being busy, they accommodated 6x for supper at late notice. Nice food and drink. Very reasonable cost, definitely would go back. Worth a visit.

Nos alojamos en la habitación uno, así que no puedo comentar sobre otras habitaciones. La habitación era espaciosa con todo lo que necesitabas y estaba decorada con buen gusto. El personal era encantador y el desayuno era bueno (sin tostadas realmente extraño, el único lugar en el que me he alojado sin tostadas, no es que lo necesitaras). Un montón de enchufes. Mi única queja sería que la ventana del baño solo tenía una persiana falsa que no se podía cerrar y, como nuestro baño daba al jardín de cerveza, tuvimos que ducharnos en la oscuridad. . tapones para los oídos siempre que los necesite para las campanas de la iglesia. Recomendaría este lugar y sin duda volveremos.
