Large room. The restaurant is a little strange behind a wine shop, but good with slightly elaborate daily specials. You have to be a little on the hunt for the server though.

Friendly staff and locals. Nice pint of real ale in the fresh air on pavement picnic table was refreshing during our tough cycle ride around the area!

Called on for breakfast and the food and service was v good. My wife is coeliac so they popped out to get some gluten free bread - very tasty egg on sourdough and avocado . Looks like a family run business hotel . A little run down and tries to sell everything from wine to socks. Plastic table cloths a bit off putting and old school . Worth a visit for lunch and breakfast .

I travel a lot for work, this was the worst hotel I've ever seen. My studio room was dirty and smelled strongly of mold, couldn't wait to leave, avoid this place at all costs.

7pm What we believed was a wine bar (as the signs said on the windows) we entered the bar and was told somewhat brusquely that the bar was only open to residents and it was very apparent we were not welcome - and the bar was completely empty ! This has never happened to us before and we certainly will never return for a repeat . Unbelievable

Appleby is a bit of a hidden gem, a beautiful little town with some lovely shops and pubs, but benefits from being off the tourist trail of Lakes. The Tufton Arms is an excellent location overlooking the main square, historic and Acharacterful inside, with top quality breakfast and friendly professional service.

Had a wonderful lunch in this quirky old hotel in a room full of lovely giftware and exclusive wines for sale. I had a delicious kedgeree and my wife had an omelette.

We arrived a bit late for lunch and we were given a warm welcome. The bar/cafe is a little bizarre but the food was excellent. The sharing platter of salmon was generous and very tasty. Beautifully arranged and served with thought and care. Thank you for a very good lunch.

I've been here a couple of times now in the past 6 months or so, both times with my mother and grandma. The place is located on such a lovely cobbled street in the heart of the beautiful Appleby. The menu is really wide-ranging and quite posh - I tried my luck asking Mother to treat me to the £27 steak, but to no avail. Instead, I enjoyed a delightful Bakewell tart and coffee. Grandma loved her scone - which was served warm, a rarity in the Scone Industry. Oh how I'd love to return and try some of the main dishes! Staff very helpful and lovely too.

We’ve stayed here several times and always been delighted. This visit, we had a really nice suite. One evening we had grouse for dinner. It was sensational. If you want a sterile modern hotel, this isn’t it. If your taste runs more to a proper country hotel in a great location then it’s for you.

Preciosa primera noche comida y bebida.

Living nearby, Appleby is my nearest town. When I have visitors I regularly take them for a meal at the Tufton Arms, and we frequently use it for family occasions. So I have eaten there with young children, who can be demanding, older children and more formally sometimes with friends and visitors. Whatever the occasions, the hotel adapts to our needs with patience and tolerance! The hotel itself caters largely for walkers, fishermen and women and hunters, although there are also businessmen and women and ordinary tourists as well. I have not needed to stay there, but this review is about the restaurant. The food is traditional, much of it locally sourced and it is well cooked. The Sunday roast is carved at the table and is good value for money. What we appreciate apart from a good meal at a reasonable cost is the unhurried atmosphere and the informality.

We dined here when staying overnight after day five of six walking the Lady Anne’s Way having wandered around the town and found nothing else that took our fancy. The rather impressive dining room was quite empty for a Saturday evening (it was wet outside and late season), but the food proved to be very good and quite reasonably priced. I started with crispy whitebait followed by hake on a fishcake as my main, both of which were tasty with good service.

Decided to visit Appleby and saw the Tufton Arms as we had a walk around the village. Food was very good and the lady who was looking after serving the food was really nice. My Wife tried the Belly Pork with Apple Mash and I had the Steak and Ale Pie, both very good. Large portions so needed another walk around before we left the village. Highly recommended.

We used to visit this quaint pub years ago so decided to make a return. The pub has retained its cosy character and the staff were very welcoming. The food was excellent: vegetable soup and salmon roulade to start and then pan-fried hake on a fish cake bed and a very fine steak and ale pie. Lovely afternoon and a ‘must try’ if you happen to be in the area...

We arrived in Appleby a bit late for afternoon tea but in need of refreshment. Found the Tufton Arms Hotel offered coffee and cake, with dogs allowed. Hot day so had to take dog with us. Friendly greeting by receptionist, good coffee, choice of cakes, good value, and we could sit in or out. Just what we needed.

At the time of writing, the Tufton Arms was 18 / 26 of restaurants in Appleby (I guess, due to a lack of reviews so far). To be honest, it hadn't even factored in my potential choices due to this when I did a quick check on tripadvisor to see where we should eat that night. However, following two separate recommendations from staff at the castle, we decided to eat here - and glad we chose to ignore tripadvisor rankings on this occasion!

From the outside it looked like a pub that served food, how wrong my first impressions were. On entering the decor was lovely, there is a small bar area on the right with tables and seating, we were given a very friendly greeting by the bar man. We ordered drinks and took a seat in the bar whilst we perused the menu, we were told we could eat wherever we liked, we opted for the restaurant area, a lovely lady called Holly took our order and stayed she would show us through once our starters were ready. The restaurant was at the rear of the building, a lovely area, nice ambience, white table cloths etc. The food did not disappoint us either, one of the best meals I've had and good value for money. I had hummus to start, followed by pan fried chicken (fabulous), would've been rude not to try dessert, opted for the Bailey's creme brulee (divine). Can't wait to go back.

Stopped by for a nightcap in the bar which was very quiet. There was an overpowering smell of cooked fish which would was unpleasant after a meal elsewhere. It felt as though it was mainly for residents so we left after one quick drink. Loos upstairs.

We had the roast rib of beef Sunday lunch and couldn't fault either quality or quantity. The beef was both tender and tasty. The Yorkshire puddings both plentiful and some of the best we have tasted in a restaurant. Staff were friendly and helpful but not too intrusive. We would recommend this to anyone.

A group of us called in for lunch and it met with expectations, but just don't expect high end dining, this is a typical small market town hotel restaurant. Some of the food was disappointing, avoid the shepherd's pie, but other dishes were okay (if you like your lamb very well done) and others better than that.

We were looking for a place to eat in Appleby after a walk round the town. We only picked the Tufton as the signboard said 'dogs welcome in the lounge' as we thought we were going to have to find somewhere to eat outside... and it was raining....

We stayed in Appleby-in-Westmoreland a couple of days and had dinner in the Tufton Arms twice. The food was great, staff wonderful, and fellow diners warm and charming. (It's not clear to me whether the dining room is open to the public, or just the bar and lounge. We ate both times in the lounge area.) Our B&B; hostess recommended the Tufton Arms and we're very glad she did. It was our favorite dining establishment in Appleby!

We visit Dufton at least twice a year and eat at The Stag Inn. Rachael,Matt, and the team are always welcoming. The food is always excellent, and my allergies are catered for. During the winter months, the log burners are burning in the bar area, and the restaurant has beautiful views. It is a busy pub, and booking a table is recommended to avoid disappointment.

Very disappointing Lamb Hot Pot, about 3 very small pieces of lamb which were absolutely lost in the dish, the rest is lots of potato, a few pieces of carrot and lots of minty gravy.

Stayed here to break our journey from Central Scotland to the Peak District. Had a very pleasant chalet type room at the rear of the property with easy access. Enjoyed a drink and an evening meal in the bar with our wee dog. We both had the sirloin steak with was generous in proportion and quite tasty.Staff friendly as were the locals. Would definitely return.
