Visited for Sunderland Restaurant Week (3 courses for £20). Our first time visiting but won’t be the last! Lovely cosy atmosphere, themed around Alice in Wonderland. Decorated really quirkily, with some really interesting pieces of Alice art. Staff were so friendly and welcoming, taking the time to come to chat at the table. The food was so, so nice. Beautifully cooked and well presented. Not a bad thing to say about this place. Already looking forward to next time.

We went to the Saltburn truffled hog for Valentines night. Our first experience with truffled hog (Stokesley) had been a poor one food wise but as this was some years ago and a different venue we thought we’d give it a try. The food standard overall was very high, the only gripe we had was the ‘Black vanilla’ ice cream as part of the pudding sharing platter. Intrigued as to how they’d manage to get it black we soon found out it was just food colouring as our mouths, lips and teeth turned black. Looking around the restaurant you could pick out who plumped for that pudding too. Not what I’d expect of a ‘good’ restaurant. Now to the main reason for a low score…the service. Three staff were on the floor that night. The male server was excellent but unfortunately we saw little of him. The 2 females were pretty shocking though. We waited around 20 minutes to be served after getting our menus, then another 10 for our drinks to arrive (this restaurant has about 10 tables). After our main course arrived, the waitress realised we’d used our cutlery on our starter and said she’d come back with fresh. Off she went, only for us to see her come back out and go to other tables to take payments and orders. After about 5 minutes (you try looking at your rapidly cooling for that long) we had to grab her attention from the other side of the restaurant. Her excuse ‘Sorry, we’re so busy tonight’. Overall attitude was crap, actually looking us up and down and frowning when we said we were ok for drinks. Hopefully they were temporary staff or ones that have climbed the steep learning curve quickly since then. Unfortunately, however good the food is, the service taints the whole experience 🫤

Food tasted ok. Very expensive fornwhat it was. I had a full English qnd my wife had a vegetarian breakfast. Came with no meat substitute. Both breakfasts unbelievably came with no bread or toast. Had to pay extra. Worst of all was the price of the toast, 2 slices of sliced bread for about £3.50. Came with jams, but having a breakfast these wasn't needed. After asking, it was still the same price.

Excellent breakfast which comes with toast and preserves. The coffee is good which costs £3.20 and £10.00 for the breakfast.Maybe a little on the expensive side as it's not the biggest breakfast but everything on the plate was so good and so nice to get plum tomatoes instead of fried ones.i would definitely recommend this cafe for breakfast and with the tables outside it's a pleasant place to eat it aswell especially when the weather is like it was today

A fabulous historic Inn/B & B on Roman Stanegate, close to the market town of Hexham and the Tyne Valley (10 minutes walk to the river), well placed for Hadrians Wall at its most dramatic point at Steel Rigg, and with lovely varied walks around the village itself. The rooms are luxurious, the food superb, and everything is wonderfully well-organised by Sue and Andy, who make sure every detail is perfect. The winter offer of £199 per couple/room is brilliant value, and lasts until the end of March. I could not recommend the Red Lion more highly.

Called in on a Tuesday because the nearby microphone doesn't open. Cask ale was undrinkable

I love an independent coffee shop and the Garden Coffee House is a real gem. Grant and his team are friendly and welcoming, the cappuccinos are excellent, and the avocado and feta on sourdough is fantastic. They also host fun, unique events—we’ve done early morning yoga with breakfast and can't wait for tarot card readings over lunch. So much caffeinated fun!
