The Mad Hatter in Sunderland

Used Mad Hatter for our business Christmas buffet and cant thank them enough. Booking communication was clear and they were very accommodating, arrived on time and set everything out, food was amazing quality, hot and plentiful, served, cleaned and tidied away. They even made a separate platter gluten free option. What more could you want? Amazing.

What an amazing afternoon we have just had here, gluten free festive afternoon tea. It was the best afternoon tea I’ve had, I didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything. Lovely place and atmosphere was lovely and relaxed nothing was too much bother. Already booked up for January.

First time visitor here today for the xmas afternoon tea. Absolutely brilliant. Loved the quirkiness, really friendly staff and food was amazing. Booked up for a return visit before we left. Can thoroughly recommend 👌

My fiance brought me here for breakfast cause I love alice in wonderland so much. Omg the place is absolutely fabulous, breakfast was lovely and the cheese cake is to die for. The whole experience was made even better by the wonderland lady who served us and went above and beyond. What a lovely lady she was very friendly and made us feel very welcome on out trip to the mad hatter. I recommend everyone visit this place and we will definitely be back for lunch

Went for Brunch today, wow!! The food was freshly made and exceptional. All 4 us enjoyed our meals, cant wait for next time. Worth reserving a table during lunch time as gets really busy.

This was our first visit and we will definitely be back. Breakfast was our meal today, excellent quality food served by friendly helpful staff. We are already looking at when we can return and try something else.

Saturday morning breakfast and coffee. In a row of terraced houses and shops on the way to seaburn beech, Sunderland. Comfortable and Quaint. Staff so friendly and helpful, very good breakfast and lunch inexpensive.

We called in Thursday evening for dinner as this restaurant always delivers on excellent quality and friendly service. Lovely meals as usual and quite filling. It’s a relaxing and cosy spot for a meal and a place where you are never rushed. We also ordered rolls to take away for our breakfast on the train up to Edinburgh the following day. The rolls were large and well filled with plenty of beef which kept us going all day. One plea for Sue - please never get rid of the Eton Mess from the dessert menu!!

Took my sister when I came up from London. What a great place to go not only was the food good the owner and all her staff couldn’t have made us feel more welcome lovely people felt like we had known them for years. So go there soon you will really enjoy the experience.

We’ve visited for breakfast a few times but decided to try the Sunday lunch and we’re glad we did. Generous portions with a good selection of vegetables. There was a choice of six meats which came with a yorkie, roast potatoes and a parsnip and then there were separate dishes of mash, carrots, broccoli, peas, cabbage and cauliflower cheese with a jug of gravy. The normal menu as well as specials were also available. Service was good and the staff were friendly. A few people came in to collect take away lunches whilst we were there. Going to try the evening menu next time we’re in the area.

The venue is quirky and comfortable, staff were friendly and helpful and the food was fabulous. Definitely recommend, small independents need our support.

We recently celebrated a number of birthdays and prearranged a seafood paella and jugs of homemade sangria. Everything was delicious, The atmosphere was welcoming and made more special by a surprise dessert. We all went home with food babies and a smile in our pocket. Thank you 😊

Food was good but this being my first time visiting, I thought it would be more themed with the menu. Brought our granddaughter and the menu was alright. No complaints, service was good. As for afternoon tea, you would have to book 24hrs in advance. So we were disappointed that that was not available.

I’ve been coming to this little restaurant for many years. I would recommend that I would give it 21 out of 10 the food and the presentation. The cleanliness of the building and access into the building is perfect. The staff are really really friendly .

Myself and Mrs tried The Mad Hatter for our breakfast this morning and we were not disappointed. We were welcomed by very polite friendly staff and presented with menus. We both had full breakfasts accompanied with choice of tea or coffee and a range of fruit juices. All of which came fairy quickly and was all very nice. We will certainly come back and maybe try lunch or an evening meal at the weekend.

Lovely cafe by day and fantastic restaurant by night. The welcome is warm, the food is fresh and homemade, the atmosphere is relaxed. The evening menu is Fri/Sat-check it out, you won’t be disappointed.

I had afternoon tea, it was lovely. The Mad Hatter is lovely, the food looks and smells great, I'll opt for a cooked meal next time I go as everything that was brought to other customers looked and smelled delicious. The staff are very nice and friendly

I was so disappointed in the cafe I used to go their a lot as the meals were delicious and good value for money On our return today for our usual breakfast we were welcomed upon arrival shown to our table we were shown to a table with the waitress asking us if we have been here before I mentioned not in a while we used to be here all of the time. We quickly realised that the price of the meals had raised quite considerably the breakfast’s shrunk in size paying 12 pounds for a smaller glass of juice Coffee included 1 slice of toast instead of the 2 slices you used to get with jam and butter if we used the toast for our breakfast we wouldn’t Have anything for the jam and butter having the jam going to waste My breakfast came with 1 sausage 1 egg potato and cabbage mix 2 plumb tomato small pot of beans spread over an oversized plate We asked for extra toast that we got at I believe no extra charge I say with regret that I won’t be going back although I wished I mentioned how I felt So so disappointed at this stage in the community and we all have limited money and trying to support our local community it would be more to keep the costing low that would bring in the regular stream of customers the cafe is still popular food is good but a shame for the costing and meal size

Went for afternoon tea, there were 4 of us, The staff in this place are 1st class, so friendly and polite, nothing is a bother, the food was lovely with unlimited tea and coffee, we got what we couldn't eat boxed up to take home, highly recommended 👌

There are not enough superlatives to say haw great this resturant, their food and their staff are. Mad Hatter catered for our Wedding last week and the food and service were absolutely excellent. Luiz, Sue and Delores were there to serve, oversee and make sure everyone was having great time....and then clear away aftewards.. All of our guests loved the food and had nothing but praise for the MH team. Thank you Mad Hatter. Definitely ten out of ten. Keefe and Emily.

Absolutely amazing outside catering and waiting service. They went absolutely above and beyond all expectations. Louis’ food was utterly delicious, each course served seamlessly! We couldn’t be any more grateful for all that Sue and the team did on the day. Their wealth of experience in the industry really shone through! They even left the kitchen cleaner than they found it! Thank you so much to everyone at the Mad Hatter, I will never cater an event with anyone else but these wonderful people!

Came here for breakfast and the food was good quality and the service was also good. I’d spoken to the cafe a few days before when I had an issue with apartment next door and they were more than happy to help. There were options for gluten free too which was good. Prices were reasonable and I enjoyed the meal.

Fantastic food supplied and served by Mad Hatter at an outside venue. I’ve also been into the coffee shop where they serve freshly made food in a warm friendly atmosphere.

Came for lunch with my husband and father-in-law. I ordered the afternoon tea, it was amazing! Four sandwiches and a piece of quiche (coronation chicken, four cheese, ham and tuna/mayo). 5 desserts (scone/jam and cream, butterscotch cheesecake, coffee & walnut cake and cherry & almond flan and a shortbread biscuit Oh and a big pot of tea! Fantastic value!

This place is fantastic! I stopped here with my family and the food was deliciously amazing as was the service! Our server (Lisa) was so super friendly and helpful. It's a fun and quirky/whimsical place that fits the restaurant name - a wonderful breakfast experience all around! Thank you to the owner who came out to welcome us. We were in on Saturday whilst down for pink, we didn't have a table booked but staff were so helpful and sorted us out they then also moved tables around so we wouldn't be rushed. Food was fantastic some of the best I've had both my gentleman's afternoon tea and my partners afternoon tea were just brilliant, service was also brilliant all the ladies were warm and welcoming. I'm already trying to think of an excuse to make the four hour drive from dundee back down to visit again!

Love the sunday dinners, we collect it cold, on the way to visit various places. Then warm it up when we can home. Brilliant no pots, no oven, no messing about. Great staff, friendly and clean 👍

Went in December paid for two sandwiches was kept waiting for half an hour waitress walking past me then got fed up so left husband went back in shop and sandwiches had been left on the side stone cold never return Don’t think they should charge you before you get your food poor service For Basic food

My wife and I tried The Mad Hatter for the first time today. We both enjoyed the experience very much. The food was absolutely delicious. The lady that served us arranged drinks that were not on the menu ( iced latte). The lovely little cafe was extremely clean and inviting. It had a really nice atmosphere. Service was very friendly. We will absolutely be back. The staff there are clearly proud of the place and rightly so. We are looking forward to going back regularly 🙂

This is local to where I live so I pop in now and again. It's always a lovely atmosphere and quality home-made food. Me & my mam love it in there and we went there for lunch for my mam's 75th birthday. I told the staff and at the end of our meal, they came out with a cupcake with a candle in it & sang "Happy Birthday" to her. It was a really thoughtful gesture. Can't fault the place.

Just been to mad hatter ordered takeout bacon sandwich and ham sandwich took over half an hour walked out and my husband went in as I developed anxiety waiting when he went in to be told they were on the side and were then cold...

Lovely friendly staff and amazing fresh tasty food all reasonably priced and fantastic flavour I had the broth and dumplings and it was better than my mam makes which says a lot highly recommend a visit to this place we will be back.
