Great village pub, new owners recently but have kept the welcoming atmosphere

We are locals and frankly we’re delighted with the recent changes made to the pub. We went out with a group of friends for an evening meal, it was absolutely delicious. The staff are friendly, the drink is far superior to what used to be on offer. Highly recommend.

Following my mother’s funeral service, we chose The Ship to hold the Wake with 45 friends and family. The reception was outstanding. The venue is perfect and coped with the numbers without hesitation. The buffet was plentiful and delicious whilst the individual selections prepared for those with dietary requirements (including two severe coeliacs) was unprecedented and good. With a bar tab and copious tea and coffee as part of the buffet deal, the final bill also came as a pleasant surprise. A big thank you to all.

Both the food and service were excellent! We had the tasting menu of 7 courses all of which were delicious, beautifully presented and a good size. We were in a room on our own but not forgotten, and it was nice to see the chef bring out some of the courses. There have been a couple of previous visits when the service was slow, but not tonight; full marks. It’s so lovely to have a local couple making such a success of this restaurant - in this area of the UK it’s a rarity.

We have visited this restaurant a few times - for dinner and lunch over the past few months. The food is lovely and the service is excellent! We can not fault the food - had the pork, the fish dishes and a Sunday roast too - which there is lots of! Daisy and Fran have both served us on different occasions and they are both happy and helpful and so polite! We will be back soon. Keep it up.

Really enjoyable pub lunch. I had the chefs pie of the day, Pheasant and Partridge served with mash, red cabbage, mashed carrot and swede and brussels sprouts. It was home made to a very high standard, absolutely delicious and far more filling than it looked. It wasn't cheap at about £16 but it was good value and I'll definately be going back sometime.

We often pop in for a quick drink or lunch but this week we booked Sunday lunch for 10 of us. As there were quite a few of us, we had to pre order food choices and pay £5 per head. This worked well as the food came quickly after we were seated. The roast dinner was a proper old fashioned pub roast, the lamb and beef were plentiful and delicious. The potatoes were excellent and the veg was well cooked and there was lots of it. We were able to order chicken pies for the people who didn’t eat red meat and also off the normal menu as one of our party didn’t like roast. The puddings were excellent too. The staff were really friendly and attentive. All in all, a lovely Sunday afternoon.

Sunday Lunch for 5 as a last minute idea, we decided to go local. Despite living less than 10 miles from Great Hockham, I had never been to the village and a charming place it turned out to be. The food was traditional pub grub and the portions huge. Service was great and friendly and the meals fantastic. Unfortunately due to a upcoming holiday to Portugal we were all not drinking bar one of our number but we will make up for that at our next visit as there was a good choice of ale, which the locals seemed happy with! Well worth a look!
