Best fish and chips we’ve had in a very long time. Very good value for money too. Staff were very polite and friendly. Will definitely be going back soon.

The quality of the food was good. A decent sized piece of fresh and well-cooked haddock in a light crispy batter accompanied by slightly crispy chips certainly hit the spot. A bonus was being able to eat inside on a cold and wet night. I felt it was a bit expensive at £12.75 for a large haddock and half portion of chips. Worse still, the half portion of chips was charged at threequarters the price of a normal portion. I heard the staff discuss this but they didn't say it to my face. Very disappointing. It lost them my business on the other 3 nights I had F&C in Swaffham.

We’ve just had the best fish & chips ever I can’t recommend this fish shop/cafe highly enough Fish was so fresh it was cooked to perfection chips were amazing service was brilliant portions were generous There is a varied menu I had cod whilst my husband had plaice both were fantastic The cafe part is small we were lucky enough to get a table but if it’s full it really is worth going back later It was our first visit but will definitely return next time we’re in Swaffham

We ordered a delivery and it was vile..cold congealed and missing items..fish was dry greasy and unedible we called up.and for told sorry we can't do anything maybe a discount next time....no thanks !

We were surprised that the "BBQ Rib" was deep-fried and seemed like undistinguishable meat. The chili, however, was good. Chips were average. Nice, friendly staff. Small, clean restaurant with a couple of tables... mostly take-out.

Poor. Only had a portion of chips but they had been out for some while and were not hot but were greasy and repeated afterwards. Reasonable quantity but that is only positive on the food. Staff were polite. Shop clean and tidy. Last time I went there it was the same and gave them a second chance. Never again. You can do so much better.

This review is based on one visit where 3 portions of cod and chips were purchased , the review refers to all the portions . A one word sum up AWFUL . The worst take away fish and chips I have ever had. For the price it should have been outstanding , it was not The fish was over cooked and bone dry with no succulence ( all portions ), The chips had been cooked in tired oil at a too low temperature so were boiled in the oil as opposed to fried , as a result the chips were running in oil which was dripping out of the paper . To the owners if you would like to see what well cooked ,fairly priced portions of fish and chips look and taste like , I suggest you visit the “Pilot Inn “ Dungeness Had I had not been staying some 9 miles away I would bought the food back for a refund

I had battered cod without the cod (basically a piece of batter) two small sausages and a hand full of chips for £19:50 and we were still hungry afterwards and had to go elsewhere. Supposed to be a must go to Fish and Chip shop but it was really a bad eating experience.

The chips were awful would not go there again, the price for chips is ok has long as the chips are good

Three times in the last two months we have ordered large portions of chips and only getting small amounts hate being ripped off. Whether it’s reduced portion sizes and charging more of just trying to rip people off giving them smaller portions deliberately I don’t know but you used to get decent sized portions in here. Not now though shame.

Disaster when we got the order home it was not only cold but we were missing a piece of fish and the jumbo sausage was a small sausage (we live in Swaffham and drove to collect it) phoned them and they delivered another piece of fish plus jumbo sausage still not that hot. This used to be a great fishsnd chip shop but since covid they have lost their way. Fish is not Skinned before being battered (yuk) and chips are inevitably greasy and cold quite frankly don't bother ! Try Mr Chips across the street

Arrived here en route home from football. Really great fish and chips, nice coffee options and all served with a smile. The fish was good size. Well cooked and the fresh chips were really delicious.

Delicious fish and chips. Fresh and tasty. Whenever we are in Swaffham we always go to Mother Hubbards. Friendly and efficient staff. Yes probably expensive but worth it.

This was my first time trying Mother Hubbards and all I can say is that the food was not worth the money at all and quite disappointing. The portion sizes were ok but way too overpriced for the quality - £15.00 for two regular chips with one fish and one battered sausage. The chips were quite tasteless in my opinion with some a little too hard and overcooked. Lots of them were also stuck to the paper with some being impossible to peel off which is not what I expect from a good chip shop. The only good thing to mention is that service was quick and the fish was quite nice with no bones at all and also a good size. The chips were certainly a let down and I definitely think there's better out there. I won't be using these again.

Staying local to the area and called in for fish and chips today. Cooked fresh, and so, so tasty. Even had gluten free vinegar!

Went on Friday night, I had skate and chips and my wife has scampi, absolutely excellent. Always been a fan of fish and chips and I don’t know of anywhere better.

Visited today on Thursday 7th' 1.10pm. Now frying new potatoes ' said sign outside the business. They may have been new once upon a time. Disgraceful tasting, appearance wise and a jumbled up mess greeted the unwrapping of the chips. Utter waste of money. How any self respecting owner and staff feel the need to serve this utter rubbish is unbelievable. Wake up and judge yourselves. Avoid.

The best fish and chips in Swaffham. You can phone over your order to collect which is a blessing on a Friday night as good means busy. Also has an upstairs restaurant, All the usual fish plus some extras

We try a fair few chippys and they are all usually dissapointing. Today we had the best fish and chips in 11 years. Why did we not know about this place????? The chips were fried just right and tasted creamy. The fish was pure white and tasty. Again just cooked to perfection and crispy batter as well. Some reviews have mentioned price but with 3 options for fish. 7.50 for large I didnt think that was bad. Paid that for medium fish in some places round here and been served with something the size of a sardine. We will be back again. As a Yorkshire couple living in Suffolk we have finally found a good chippy. Even if it is Norfolk lol

Haddock very nice as was the lovely batter but for a Medium was Small making it Expensive. One thing I couldnt understand was the girl took my Order but didnt pass it on for a few minutes so though I was in no hurry just wasted time. This fish bar is very popular. The service is quick and the food very good if eaten straight away although their chips could be cooked to a higher standard. They really need part cooking and finished off when required to give them that crispy skin.

Best fish and Chips in Swaffham. Slightly expensive but worth it. Staff very friendly and helpful, can queue sometimes. They also do homemade doughnuts which are lovely.

Squeezed into bottom seated area as restaurant closed, the portions were small and the fish not fresh but had been frozen for some time an expensive meal overall two fish 2 chips 2 portion of peas and curry sauce £21.50 wouldn’t mind if good quality, gone down over time .

I used to come in this chip shop regularly because a few of my friends worked there. I Enjoyed the food and the welcome from the staff. It seems though in the last 6 months so much has changed... no passion and quality in both staff and food. Small portions for a ridiculous price, rude and consistently hearing the staff members moaning about other work colleges that work there which is a very low thing to do and say. You’re all meant to be a team and yet you go and do that every time I’m in? I think the manager should perhaps retrain staff and possibly teach them just how to actually behave in front of customers. I know we’re all human but it annoys me so much that they’re constantly nattering about each other.

Poor service, poor food and high prices.

We live in Derbyshire and call to visit relatives (in Swaffham) around every other month. Our relatives enjoy F & Cs and until our last two visits we had always been satisfied with our takeaway purchasers. The shop looks spotlessly clean and the staff appear very efficient. The product is relatively expensive with Haddock and Chips around £7.30 inc chips at £2. All well and good providing the product is consistently good.

Picture this, 5.30pm Sunday 21st Oct. Please may I order 2 large Vegi spring rolls, 1 well done and 1 normal cooked and 1 jumbo sausage in batter, no chips , thank you. Wait for the spring rolls to be cooked, no problem there. Called when order ready was passed a package. Off home, unrap to find ALL THREE ITEMS TOGETHER, by now oil had seeped into spring rolls, sausge batter touching vegi options. No idea which well done or normal one was.UGH.

Just a fish and chip shop. But the staff are rude and they don't do a small chips. The price is high. Go to Pedlars or Mr Chips.

The food is to die for, the staff are very helpful and friendly. You can never go wrong with just having fish and chips and I would highly recommend this small business!

We live a few miles away in Watton and go there quite often, usually on a Friday evening and use the upstairs restaurant. The staff are friendly chatty very helpful and nothing is too much trouble for them. The fish 'n' chips are well presented and taste great and are good value for money. We will continue to go there.

Whenever I have been the chips are always half cold and too chewy with too many bad ones! Definately a place to avoid and much better to be had elsewhere.

Been here plenty of times for fish and chips. At times there will be people waiting outside due to it being so busy and it’s then cracking fish and chips, all cooked fresh etc. Other times the place is dead and the fish and chips is old, cold and hard, the prices always remain the same regardless of the quality of food they’re serving though!

Excellent value fish and chips to be had at Mother Hubbard’s – as well as a takeaway, they have a seating area upstairs for those who wish to eat in. You can get large cod, chips and mushy peas, with a large roll and butter, and large mug of tea and a biscuit all for the bargain price of £9.95. The girls serving upstairs are friendly and chirpy.

Been going to Mother Hubbard’s for a while and never had a bad meal. Fish is always lovely and chips very good. Their homemade tartare sauce is really nice. Staff are always friendly

I live 5 miles away and Mother Hubbards support a BSB race team, which immediately puts me in bias mode!......but.....this really is probably the best F&C; for miles around. The food is great, freshly cooked, staff are great and traditionally prepared, which unfortunately means not very 'veggie friendly'.

This shop had a queue out the door for a good reason as the locLarge quantities of food and good value for money.

Went here for fish and chips 1 evening, queued like any normal human being, man comes in and server wants to serve him first, he rightly says these people were first to which the server rudely disagreed, when both sets of customers confirmed she was again rude saying she disagreed with both sets of customers so insisted on serving the man first, after all that we get home and the chips were poorly cooked and I have seen more batter on an Aldi nugget than I did the battered sausages. Not to be repeated.

We have lived in Swaffham for 14 years and used Mother Hubbard's regularly from day one. Always excellent food, very friendly staff and good service. There are always queues out the door which indicates their popularity. No-one minds waiting as results are great.

Went to a pub 30 miles away, saw the stupid dinner prices and then I remembered where we often stop on late night cricket match journeys. So called in at Mother Hubbard, fantastic fish and brilliant chips, with a pint from the next door pub. Bog is spotless as is the whole environment. Highly recommend.

Only came here because my local was shut over the weekend, and wow, exceptional quality chippy, great portions too. I was really impressed by the gourmet donuts the store sells also, I will be trying them at some point.

In swaffham visiting relative ? Hankering after fish n chips , mother Hubbards was suggested , cod and chips twice , and asked for bits too ( remember this from childhood ) at home they would look at you like you were mad if you asked for the bits off the batter that go to the bin. Fish was lovely , batter light and crispy , chips good too , the bits were amazing - so thankyou and well done mother Hubbard s as good if not better than Mortons in ballycastle , Northern Ireland - yum

Lovely fish and chips. My dad really enjoyed it. He said it was really nice. He had a half portion of chips more than enough. I had just haddock as I don't like chips. I tried the homemade tarta sauce very nice. Not to expensive. Nice and clean in there. Would go again

Well that was a huge disappointment . Portion size was terrible considering the cost Chips were under cooked and the batter on the fish did not have that crunch.

We have visited several times and the food is excellent quality; very good chips and moreover the staff are lovely. We discovered a hidden gem recently when we popped in for coffee and a doughnut on market day. Great coffee and the doughnuts are absolutely fantastic. Better than Dunkin Doughnuts in my opinion!

Arrived at about 2030, free parking outside. Waited a short while in the queue to order, which allowed time to choose from the menu. Pleased to see rock salmon on the menu as has disappeared from most chippies menu. Order was fresh cooked and took about ten minutes. Jumbo sausage and chips, rock and garlic bread all superb. Steady queue of customers whilst there. Very friendly staff. Have visited before and not had such a pleasant experience hence the four stars.

We called in one Monday evening 3 weeks ago on the way home from Norwich Airport, looking forward to fish and chips to take away.

The chips from here are some of the best I have had. We ordered haddock and chips and waited a few minutes for the fish to be cooked fresh, boy was it worth the wait! the fish was large, so fresh and the batter crisp, the best bit was that the fish skin was left on! yum...

I noticed earlier in the day the sign for donuts and as Mother Hubbard was not open we decided we would pop back for tea and sample the donuts. There was a few people waiting for their orders inside and and a number of tables taken outside so quite busy which gave us a chance to look at the variety on offer. We decided on a fish cake, 3 saveloys, battered sausage, large chips, cod and chips, large mushy peas, 2 cans of drink and a bottle of water, £18 in total. Dinner for a family of 4, not bad and it was delicious! The staff were polite and apologised for our wait though it had been no longer than 7/8 minutes for our food to be cooked. We sat out side in the evening sun and enjoyed every bite of our meal. I am not connoisseur of fish and chips but I know what I like and the food was fresh and not greasy and a decent portion size.As for the donuts we were too full so will definitely be returning as they looked yummy too!

Service very friendly and attentive. Food was reasonably priced. My husband is not a chip lover but he enjoyed his rock & chips very much. They decor is a bit tired and dull but the place was clean.

Doesn't seem as good as it used to be. Last few times the fish has been overcooked and dry. Still quite pricey especially compared to the new chippy across the road which we've preferred lately.

Fish and chips are always good from here but jacket potatoes not so good. Great they offer a healthier option but perhaps they should concentrate on what they are best at. Visited last on Friday evening but servers were very efficient and facilities bright and clean

When moving to Swaffham my husband and and I hunted out Mother Hubbards after reading great reviews in TA. We both were extremely pleased to find it lived up to its high reviews and was the best fish and chips we have ever eaten! Only part that is missing is the seaside itself! The lady with blonde hair who we imagine is the owner or manager is extremely kind and even recognised us and our order the following week that we visited. Since have taken many family and friends and also eaten in the restaurant upstairs! Brilliant fish and chip shop, thrilled to have it on my door stop!

This is an old fashioned chippy. There are tables for eating in upstairs. The fish and chips are very good. We have eaten there on numerous occasions and it is consistent. There is nothing fancy about this restaurant just good fresh food.My only grouse is the sachets of tomato and mayonnaise that you are given. This is a pet hate of mine, but worth putting up with.

Ordered a large chips for £2.90. Portion was very small compared to large chips you get elsewhere. Would've thought they would changed prices and portion sizes to compete with Mr Chips which has reopened. Also had to wait for chips to be fried despite nobody else being in the shop. Shame because the chips arent bad. Just expensive and tight on portions.

Last night 17th Feb at 8.30 I called into the fish shop to get a meal to take away. It seems that the place is now run by teenagers.This used to be the best fish and chip shop in the town but not any more. On entering the shop I had to push past a group of teenagers chatting to the staff not a good impression.Apart from them the shop was empty of customers NOT a good sign on a Friday night. When I got to the counter I ordered a piece of plaice, a fish cake a pineapple fritter and chips. The plaice had to be cooked freshly !!!! I took a seat and waited for at least 15mins. In that time I was even more surprised that the was not one other customer enter the shop. In the past this place would have been buzzing with people. Finally my meal was ready I asked them to wrap it well as I had quite a long way to go. Got home and unwrapped our meal. WHAT A TASTLESS PIECE OF RUBBISH THAT WAS.the place well there wasn't any it was all hard batter and no fish, the fish cake was a soggy mess and the pineapple ring running in grease. As for the chips . COLD HARD and all they were were ends of the potato. Needless to say I won't be back. If I had lived nearer I would have taken the lot back and thrown it at them. To Whoever owns this place now I would suggest that you 1Train your staff how to behave. 2. Teach them how to cook and finally look at what state the fish is in before you charge a customer for trash. In my opinion as they now have Mr Chips opposite they need to up their game... We often visit here for our fish and chip special treat. The fish and chips are beautiful and good value for a sit-in meal inside the takeaway. The staff are always friendly. The place is nicely decorated and very clean and popular.If tomato ketchup was freely available, it would be perfect!

If you are ever passing through Swaffham and fancy a fish supper then try Mother Hubbards, you won't regret it! Their fish and chips is some of the best that I have ever eaten, really fresh good quality ingredients are used. I am often passing through this Little Market town and I just can't resist a 'Mother Hubbards'. Just a word of warning - the portions are generous, so if you are watching your waistline order the small option because believe me you won't want to leave any! Service is good though, as you would expect in an excellent fish bar, at certain times you will have to queue. Definitely worth the wait though.

We ordered takeaway fish and chips and mushy peas while staying in Swaffham and it was some of the best I've had. We had a bit of a wait as everything was cooked to orde, but it was worth waiting for. The cod and plaice were cooked perfectly with a thin crispy batter and the order of chips was enormous. One order was more than enough for two people. Mush peas actually tasted like peas. Great for takeaway, but you can also eat in. Recommended.

Just what I wanted on a Monday evening most of the other places were shut or didn't serve on a Monday. Good service and good food

We called in on the way back from a mid January run to the seaside. I ordered Gluten free cod and chips and my wife had a standard cod and chips. The gluten free cod was great, the batter was very good, the fish was cooked perfectly and the chips were just right. My wife had a pineapple fritter to follow and she gave her meal 10 out of 10. After the meal we spoke to the owner Andrew, who said they use a separate fryer (no 4) for the GF and chips so there is no chance of cross contamination. The ladies who served us were very pleasant and knowledgeable about gluten intolerance. We enjoyed our meal and will visit again. Many thanks

I have been using this Restaurant for a number of years now i can honestly say i have never had a bad meal. The staff are always friendly and the shop itself is spotlessly clean with a bright and cheery atmosphere. I would highly recommend this take away to anyone.

Staying in Swaffham so collected dinner from Mother Hubbard's as it was rated as one of the best fish and chip shops in the country. We went with a cod and a plaice and a single portion of chips, as the chip portions are large. Excellent fresh fish with light crispy batter, with the chips made from locally grown potatoes so have some flavour! Great mushy peas made the proper way from dried peas. There is an upstairs restaurant, but it was closed the evening we were there. Recommended.

Stopped in for sausage and chips, chips came fresh from fryer so should have been good.... dry as anything and bland too, bread roll was even dryer! Can only imagine this shop thrives on being one of very few in a small town and rests on it's laurels, wouldn't last 5 minutes with any decent competition around.

Myself and the wife were coming back from Hunstanton, to come back to our holiday place. We spotted the chippy and stopped for some food. It was so tasty, the fish was beautiful, the batter was crispy and not dripping with grease. The chips were amazing as well. When ever we are up in this part of the world again, we shall return!! Also, the staff are very friendly.

We've quite recently moved to Swaffham and whilst visiting last year we had a fish and chips meal at Mother Hubbard's, which went down a treat. Now we live nearby, we are glad that Mother Hubbard's is our local chippy for our weekly treat. The fish is usually superb and the chips the best I have had from a chippy. People we know who have travelled through Swaffham usually know Mother Hubbard's and it is obviously very well thought of.

On our way back from taking our granddaughters to Extreeme in Thetford Forest, we found this excellent place to "re-fuel." The staff were very friendly, the place attractive (lovely coloured chairs) and it was spotless. The food was freshly cooked and delicious. Couldn't have asked for anything better. Will definitely re-visit when on our way to the North Norfolk coast for our holidays..

It's the only fish and chip shop I know of that has comfortable seating in main part downstairs for eating just chips. A restaurant upstairs and picnic style seating outside the front when weather is fine. Ultra modern clean loo. Oh, and the food is excellent with friendly staff.
