Rose & Crown in Central Bedfordshire

We stayed in our camper van on the field. Cost £25. We then found out that there were 60 Duke of Edinburgh pupils with teachers camping in the field too with only one female toilet and shower (same for men) between us all. As we have a solar panel we didn't need the hook up and didn't use the showers or loos which was very disappointing. The saving grace was that it was Steak Night and the steak dinners were fantastic, as was the bottle of shiraz wine. The landlady was very friendly too. It was just the lack of facilities for the campsite that spoilt it.

Stayed in the camping field and enjoyed some pints and meals in the pub. Chicken, ham and leek pie was an utter joy, crammed with meat and very tasty served with mash and nicely cooked veg, so good, I had it 2 nights running. My wife also liked the pie and the superb fish and chips. Obviously cooked by a proper chef. Great service at the bar too. The pub is a good base to tour from, and perfect for us to stay whilst visiting Duxford museums in Cambridgeshire.

Cheerful and helpful landlady and staff. Busy, as one would expect. Fish and chips are good and fish pie is excellent. I love vegetables but I don't like sugar in my cabbage.

What a cracking stop over for us on the way to Dover, very reasonable price for the camp site and the same goes for the pub food. A good selection of food and the service was spot on. Staff are very friendly as well, hope to stay there on the way back home.

Amazing food! Super service too, very accommodating, moved our tables to suit our party better without even being asked. We had the roasts, gammon and eggs, and a burger in the spotless restaurant. Everything was perfect. Deserts lovely too.

Dropped in for lunch and though we had left it close to their kitchen closing time staff were very welcoming and accomodating. Dining area pleasantly set out, with some thought given to the layout rather than just cramming in as many tables as possible. Good choice on the menu, our orders arrived well cooked and presented. We were pleased we had stopped here and would have no concerns over coming back, a welcoming environment, efficiently run with very pleasant staff.

Perfect pub lunch. The salt and pepper squid starter was lovely. We had fish and chips and a fish pie. The veg accompaniment to the fish pie was well cooked. The pie itself was delightful. We'll be back.

Review written on behalf of my parents (Visited 15 October 2022): My parents went for a dinner on a Saturday evening in October. They had a steak and fish and chips for mains. Unfortunately the food was cold and undercooked when presented to them. When this was brought to the landladies attention she became hostile and defensive resulting in my parents just paying the bill and leaving as they wanted to get out of the situation. I would avoid this place if you value customer service and good food. However if you are looking for Victorian eta service and quality of food then roll up.

We found this pub/restaurant on Google as was nearby. Never been to the area before, pub had 4.5 stars, I would make it 5 stars. Landlady was very welcoming food was lovely and service brilliant.

We found this pub by chance but what a find. We were made very welcome and enjoyed a very good light lunch. The menu is interesting and we all made good choices. My husband was impressed by the beer and said it is very well kept. We will return when we are in the area.

I have eaten at this restaurant numerous times over the years through various changes of ownership. I arrived in time with a friend for a table booked for 8.00. Our welcome was non existent. We waited at the bar for 10 minutes and were completly ignored. Other customers were served before us including one that walked into the pub and was served straight away. No eye contact, no acknowlegement that we would be served in a moment......nothing. Customer service so important I will not be returning.

We went to a Christmas works do at the Rose and Crown. The food wasn't great to be honest, the roast potatoes were not crispy and were still quite hard. The turkey was very dry and quite a bit of food was left on the plates. The Christmas pudding wasn't moist and was just a microwaved shop one I thought, other people that had the profiteroles were not impressed and only ate one.The staff are friendly enough and it's not a bad pub but the food was disappointing.

We visited this afternoon and received a warm welcome. Huge selection of homemade pies and sausages to choose from. We both went for pies and they certainly did not disappoint! Very reasonably priced, delicious homemade pub grub! We will definitely be back soon. Thank you very much.

Four of us decided to go out for an early Friday evening drink and possibly something to eat and the Rose & Crown at Ridgmont was decided upon as the venue. We had an acceptable welcome from the bar staff as soon as we arrived and there was some friendly conversation whilst the drinks were being ordered. After a couple of drinks we agreed that we would stay there for something to eat in the restaurant area. We were seated at a good table for four and after some questions to the waiting staff, food was ordered. All four of us enjoyed our chosen dishes and a couple of us had desserts as well.Who can ask for more than a Good Meal with Friends and Helpful Staff; oh, and well kept Beer too.

This is a nice pub but has no atmosphere and unfriendly staff. The pies were very average and are only served with peas, it would have been much nicer to have had a selection of different vegetables with the meal. I couldn't recommend the pies but we may return to try the sausages.

This is a fabulous little campsite with an excellent pub attached. Shower and toilet block are kept clean. Not only are the staff friendly and helpful but the locals are great too. Food is brilliant with a great selection of homemade pies and sausages. Nice dog walk on site and some lovely countryside. Thoroughly recommended.

This review is in two parts the first part relates to the Caravan Site behind the Rose & Crown. We stopped there from the 18th to the 22nd July 2019, there are 15 pitches all with electric hookups. A nice quiet site, there is a distant hum from the M1 motorway but nothing that detracts from enjoying your stay. There is also a small toilet block, very clean, one men’s shower and toilet plus sinks. Same for the ladies.

Our caravan cub held a rally here and so were so well looked after. the owner is so helpful and his staff could not do enough for us.The pubs meals were brill and all our members loved the pies and sausages, with some buying them to take home. A great place to visit.

We stopped here on our way home as the sign for homemade pies caught our attention. We were not disappointed. The pies were just what we wanted. Between us we tried the steak and guiness, steak and kidney and chicken and chorizo. All delightful. So much so we bought 8 to take home for other family members to try. Service was excellent. Would recommend and will definitely call back when we are next in the area.

It would be nice to be greeted with a smile rather than unfriendly glares. Food is ok but atmosphere needs a boost because there isn’t any!!!

4 of us stopped on the way home from driving a tank for father's day. Even though they were fully booked they squeezed us in and the food was great. I Recommend this pub/restaurant if you are in the area or to even travel too for a great inexpensive meal if you're not.

My wife and I parked our motorhome for 2 nights at this pub while doing days 2 & 3 of the Greensand Ridge Walk and it was very convenient. We got a taxi back to Woburn to start Day 2 and a taxi back from Ampthill at the end of Day 3. Shame these were Monday and Tuesday as the pub wasn't doing food on this nights! Also we had to knock up the owners on the Wednesday morning to get the £10 deposit back on the key we had, as the gate into the camp field has to be kept padlocked to prevent 'travellers' from taking up residence as they apparently once did!

Saw a man putting up signs near M1 Junction 13 a few months ago advertising the pub and its Pies & Sausages. Made mental note to visit. Well worthwhile. Made very welcome by the barmaid. 3 real ales on, tried 2 both very good. Both tried the sausages on special. I loved mine, my wife had Smoked Maple Chilli Pork. Both excellent, nice chips and good gravy, the peas were petit pois not the usual hard tasteless peas served in pubs, well done. Pies looked good too. I understand the sausages are local and can bought from the pub. Will definetley order some Marmite ones, which means I will have to visit again. 2 normal sausages were available as well and a great selection of pies, made by the landlord I believe. Hard decision to make choosing my lunch. Good honest pub food and good portions too.

Amazing food especially the scampi and chips and tartare sauce, staff was really friendly and there was a lovely beer garden. Would definitely go again.

Arranged a surprise 80th birthday here. Around 40 of us had the freedom of a two tiered bar. The buffet was fantastic with a great selection of sandwiches and pastries plus a few unusual and very tasty bites. Great selection of beers too.

How lovely to pop to a pub, have a tight menu, pick your food & enjoy the lot. You don't need pages of choices just good choices. Great pies, friendly service. All 4 of us cleared the plate. Good luck to the owners. A pleasant change. Keep it simple & the quality will do the rest. Will be recommending to my local friends.

The sausages & pies are made by themselves & are delicious, friendly staff at the pub, fantastic garden with lots of sturdy seating dogs welcome on leads, they do pub quizzes, kareoke & have a darts team. Great food & drinks

Following a recommendation, we called in on a Thursday lunchtime as we’d heard how good the pies are here.

We came here for lunch on a Saturday and tried their infamous homemade sausages and pies.

Amazingly friendly and efficient service was the first big change. I ate here two weeks ago with 11 of my work colleagues as we hadn't visited for quite a while and it's not too far from our office.

Went for lunch here. We all sampled the pies and they were excellent. I had the steak and stilton which was delicious. Portion size was perfect. Great chips too.

Called in here after a day at nearby Woburn centreparcs. We wanted a decent pub meal and this fitted the bill perfectly. We were made to feel very welcome by the lovely owners. The menu isn't extensive but what they do, they do well. I had the butcher's sausages & my friend had a chicken & chorizo pie. I think they've recently taken over the pub and they deserve to do well.

Finally popped in here for a beer after often seeing the brown signs near J13 on the M1. Not worth the detour. The place was empty on a Wednesday lunchtime and the grim greeter behind the bar hadn't learned how to crack a smile. We sat in a sun-blessed garden, but when the (landlady?) popped out with a pie to soak up one of our pints she still looked like she wished we weren't there. Perhaps life is just too much of a fag.

Great food an service, we had the roast.. lamb while my partner had the sea bass the food was excellent the location was pretty too, i would definitely recommend.

I have visited this place many times in the past and always had a good meal, not this time! My wife and I were passing and decided to pop in for lunch. There was no one in there, we stood at the bar for what felt like forever, while the bar person was outside smoking, no apology when she did finally return. This was not the usual lady we see behind the bar, she did not greet us and frankly was quite unfriendly. I was served flat lager and when I compained I was told that this happens all the time!! We then ordered our food, a baguette, it was a limited menu from the last time we were there, no specials and a very small choice! The place looked really dirty, my wife made a comment about how unclean the ladies toilets are and the seating area outside was just full of bird droppings, with obviously no attempt made to try and clean this. What a shame this is, I can't believe how run down this pub has become from being there at the beginning of the year. The last time we were there, the food was great, the locals really friendly and the bar staff really helpful, this time, food not so great, dirty pub, not good bar staff and maybe so bad that the locals have even left!

Me and my partner visited the rose and crown for a Sunday lunch, food was served quickly and hot out of the oven. Service was friendly and understanding. Would recommend to anyone will be going there again.

We visited the pub yesterday for a Sunday roast. The food was very well cooked and there was plenty of it. The staff were very friendly and made you feel welcome. The locals were also friendly. What a great atmosphere. Definitely worth another visit.

Never have I left such a negative review as support small businesses & local village pubs but after looking forward to catching up with good friends & meeting for home cooked Sunday roast dinner I wanted to warn anyone else not to bother!

We visited the pub for an evening meal as new managers have moved in. The food was perfectly cooked and tasty, lovely friendly pub. We will return soon.

Sunday 21st January 2018 attended my Granddaughters Christening at Ridgmont Church followed by a Buffet and drinks at these premises. The buffet was excellent quality, the place was nice and clean with accommodating staff. It is a lovely old Country Pub and I recommend a visit.

We found this pub close to Centre Parcs at Woburn. Very reasonably priced meals, well presented and good quality. We really enjoyed it.

Me detuve para un almuerzo rápido y no me arrepiento. Este antiguo pub tiene el buen ambiente de la village inn, con cervezas (bombeada a la manera tradicional) y adecuada comida de pub, recién hechos y de buena calidad. Tuve salchichas y puré de patatas con salsa de cebolla y una pinta de cerveza local, quisiera mencionar que las salchichas eran más probablemente viene de la carnicería local, no era el tipo de supermercado. La factura era muy razonable.

Íbamos en coche desde Bedford a MK en camino cuando nos encontramos con este pub y decidimos parar y comimos allí. El pub parece bastante especialmente en un día soleado. Fuimos recibidos por la camarera y/camarero inmediatamente- tenía que mirar dos veces para comprobar como ileva un color piel increíblemente - Super mini con un montón de piel mostrando desde la parte de atrás, frente y a los lados de sus piernas. Nos sentamos en la zona de restaurante y pedimos carne asados del domingo y cerdo. Unos 20 minutos o así, entonces estamos notificados por ella que vendieron en asado de cerdo asado y ofreció otros o su especial que fue estofado de pierna de cerdo que elegimos. Sólo se preguntaba por qué esperar tanto tiempo para informarnos? ?

También celebramos el cumpleaños en el pub, Rosie y Andy no nos enorgullece y son buenos administradores. extrañaremos mucho cuando se trasladan a su próximo pub. Ellos han dado al pueblo nuevo enfoque social, Esperemos todo su trabajo no es bueno se encargaron al salir. Lunch here today was THE nicest steak & ale pie, accompanied with THE bes mashed potato, gravy and peas. It really is a little gem if a place and I can't wait to go back

I decided to try out the lovely quaint little pub / restaurant for Sunday lunch after a glowing recommendation from a friend. I am so glad I took their advice. The service was very polite and professional. The food arrived piping hot and the portions were very large. I had the roast beef and it was cooked to perfection.After my meal whilst having a breather I was chatting to another couple who always had their Sunday lunch there and have never had a bad meal.I noticed from other reviewers they thought the restaurant was expensive - I totally disagree. In my opinion there was a wide choice of food available at I thought very reasonable prices. In the end I had the two courses which was just under £11, and as I mentioned there was a lot of food!This is one restaurant I will definitely be visiting again

Myself, Husband and 2 children ate at this establishment on a Sunday afternoon. Children were welcomed with open arms and we were very well looked after through the entire experience. We opted for the traditional roast, where so often many pubs seem to struggle. We were served with a very generous plate of food; crispy roast potatoes, huge Yorkshire puds, tender and succulent meat (2 choices; pork or beef) then a tasty variety of seasonal veg. Our pudding of sticky toffee pudding was not a disappointment to follow! You can't go wrong with this choice of pub with a cosy, warm, homely atmosphere.

We stumbled across this pub while on an evening drive and decided to pop in for some dinner. It's a proper traditional little place and the service was very welcoming throughout. The menu was varied and would cater for all. It wasn't cheap but we are always willing to pay for quality. Unfortunately it was quality. The ingredients in the food were too cheap for a restaurant. It's a shame as a little more effort with the food would make this place excellent. Ok but good be great.

We booked a buffet and function at The Rose and Crown before the management changed. The new team were very helpful in accepting our booking and provided a great service.The buffet was a great price per head and the food was both tasty and plentiful! I first stumbled across the pub in October '14 where I had a mixed grill that has yet to be beaten. Marek is a fantastic chef and the pub is one with a cosy friendly atmosphere. We then arranged to come back with friends and rally on the campsite that is on site. Fantastic food, prepared by a very talented chef. Will always eat here when passing.

We visited this pub at lunchtime. We sat in the restaurat area which we very quiet at the time and we had our coice of tables. The range on the menu was very good, our order was taken promptly and everything we ordered was available. The food arrived in very good time and was fantastic. Everything was well presented, hot and tasted really good. We ordeed different things but all were of a similar quality. The sauces arrived in small pots, rather than just in packets which was really nice. The only issue we had was whne paying-they do not accept credit cards. This seems very strange in a pub these days and could be problematic. As it was, we managed to scrape the cash together but it could have been embarassing if everyone had intended to pay on a credit card. There were no signs to warn of tthis and nothing was written on the website. That was the only monor issue and should not discourage anyone from visiting as the food is really good!

An unpretentious family pub serving good food. The menu is simple but has all the usual favourites, well cooked and tasty. It is a relief to find a pub which has not yet been discovered by the hoards from the nearby Center Parc.

Had lunch here with 3 friends - my first visit for about 10 years! Although not overly exciting the food was wholesome, plentiful and well presented. My shepherds pie would have fed an army! The banana split was somewhat unimaginative - one banana and a couple of dollops of ice cream. However the service was pleasant and it is certainly very good value for money. We are returning soon with a larger party which is a good sign.

Staff in the bar were very friendly and service was efficient and effective. There were very noisy children present which meant we struggled to hear each other speak and it rather spoilt the atmosphere. There was a good log fire so it was cosy and the décor is traditional. The toilets were clean and well appointed.Our Sunday roasts were of a generous size and I particularly liked the roast potatoes and the extra gravy. My pork wasn't completely to my liking but this is a taste and style issue as someone else might have been delighted - I like all my fat crispy rather than white and appearing under-done. The extra sauces could have come in ceramic pots rather than plastic and the apple sauce was like a child's puree. The dessert menu was good but we didn't partake - the coffees were good.

We were there with the family today for sunday lunch. My mother had been previously and said how lovely it was. The menu is quite extensive and we were looking forward to it. We reserved a table, no problem there. Then we ordered. They had run out of chicken, so i changed my order to pork, wish i had not bothered! The piece of pork that I had and also the piece my brother had was as hard as nails and so fatty, it was disgraceful, my father had the last chicken dish and there was another piece of chicken on there that was also extremely hard to cut and very chewy. The veg was good, Potatoes and Yorkshire pudding were nice and the gravy was hot. Our waitress was a little over efficient when it came to taking the order and just about snatched the menu from my hands when we had ordered. drinks were thrown on the table very loudly and service was abominably slow. She proffered excuses that staff had either left or gone on vacation or there were too many patrons, did not wash with my family, sorry. Desert came eventually and was okay, I had chocolate fudge cake that was hard round the edge from being heated, I was told the sticky toffee pudding was good, but the cheescakes were dry. They do not take credit cards, this is not on the website where I looked............................ I do not wish to repeat the experience, thank you!

There was one couple in the dining area the place was quiet, absolutely unheard of to stop serving food at 8.45? Was told it was nice but we won't be returning, shame we ate in woburn sands after being refused here.

Ridgmont is a lovely village. We ate dinner here. Staff helpful and the food was nice with decent wine. Good value.There is a nice beer garden at the rear
