Star in Central Bedfordshire

We visited on a Saturday evening with a reservation for six. Initially, we were seated in the bar area, which was quite noisy due to a live act — something we weren’t informed about beforehand. After about 45 minutes, we requested to be moved, as we had come primarily for dinner rather than a lively bar atmosphere. Fortunately, there was plenty of seating available in quieter sections, so it was unclear why we were placed in the bar area to begin with. Unfortunately, the food didn’t meet expectations. It took well over an hour to come out and all of our meats were ordered medium but arrived well done, with the chicken noticeably burnt. Interestingly, the only dishes we enjoyed were likely pre-prepared items like the pie and lasagne. Considering the prices, the overall value was disappointing. I can't knock the staff though they were polite and attentive. All in all, not the best experience and probably one to avoid if you’re after a relaxed dinner with quality food.

Extremely disappointed, we ordered on the app due to a person in our party being disabled, 30 minutes later and only 1 person gone to the bar we were still waiting for our 2 drinks, while the barmaid just walked up and down and spoke to a table that she was very friendly with. The food was lovely and came out within the 30 minutes.. We would of got our food before our drinks if someone from our party had not gone up, once addressed there was not even a sorry just oh I will find the ticket, even when drinks brought over still not sorry about the wait, it ruined what was actually a good meal out unfortunately.

Hadn’t been here for a while and pleasantly surprised at how good the food was and the quick service. Even better that it’s dog friendly.

Smallest chicken breast ever on Hunters Chicken dish. Many out of stock dishes too. Staff tried and were nice enough but evidently new. Disappointed. Won't return.

The Star has really hit the mark today. I’ve been coming here for fifty years! We had a great senior citizen’s 3 course lunch for just £8.49. I don’t know how they do it for the price 😳 Service was spot on and friendly. Chaney Stubbs the new assistant manager couldn’t do enough for us. And there’s a big beer garden around the back I didn’t even realise was there ! Would highly recommend 👍

The staff, the food and atmosphere was amazing on Easter Sunday. We loved it!!

I went with friends last week. We waited almost an hour for lunch. Well, who serves 3 day old potatoes, hard carrots and then no broccoli!!!! We asked for more gravy as dinner was almost cold, we were told a 5 minute wait..Really helps when your hungry and foods cold 😡😡😡.. Veg were inedible..we had to ask for the broccoli..it was delivered separately. Come to coffee!!!!! No milk, are you serious in a pub. We were given swirty cream. The staff, were above and behond, as 1 full time and 1 trainee on shift. They deserve an award. There was a family behind us, it was loud so we could hear, the conversation an like us were angry at the meal given. Definitely not the staff As we were leaving, they charged me twice. I understand it can happen, but to then call 21 times on the Monday, no one answered. Got through on Tuesday, and all staff were aware of the issue. But they wanted proof, they got it. I have been refunded..After a week. I will never go back, we wasn't offered anything complementary..are we supposed to be??. But one of the worst failures of a Sunday roast.. Again brilliant staff, so sad regarding management Again, after a week trying to contact the management, by email and a few unanswered phone calls. I've heard nothing....

My father and I have visited a few times now for lunch and have always had a very pleasant meal. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. Specifically Chaney the assistant manager and Kerry the chef. We took advantage on our last visit with my daughter to have the ‘Thursday Steak Offer’, really excellent value. I would also recommend the steak sandwich from the lunch menu as that was delicious as well. All in all a great country pub, great staff, lovely food and atmosphere. Thank you

We booked a table for five for Mother’s Day and were surprised to be seated in the bar area despite booking in advance and expecting to be in the restaurant. On arrival, the first thing the waitress said was, “We’re having a shift change, so if you want drinks, you’ll need to order at the bar. Someone will come take your order shortly.” After getting our drinks and reviewing the menu, we waited about 20 minutes with no sign of a server—even though others were being served in the restaurant area. Eventually, a waitress on break sat at the next table. We told her we were ready, and though she kindly offered to take our order, we didn’t want her to work during her break. We asked if we could order at the bar and were told, “Yeah, if that’s what you want to do.” At the bar, we learned they were out of pork belly bites and feta—something that could’ve been told to us earlier to avoid wasted time. While waiting, two bar staff were juggling drinks, food, and bar service while waitresses seemed more focused on chatting with restaurant guests. Starters took 25 minutes and were served without introduction or an offer for more drinks, though the waitress was polite. After finishing, our empty plates sat for 30 minutes before mains came out—brought by the same bar staffer, who also had to clear our starters. Two mains were cold, likely from sitting out too long, and were returned. They came back quickly, clearly microwaved. At this point, we just ate and went to the bar to pay, as no one came to check on us. The bartender apologized after we gave honest feedback, and that was the end of it. We left without any acknowledgment from the servers. I emailed the restaurant 6242@greeneking.co.uk on March 31st and followed up twice, but have yet to receive a response.

The food was ok, but the service was diabolical, we arrived at 6pm we sat at our table, no one came to take our drinks order we had to go to the bar. We then had to waite until just after 7pm for our dinner order to be taken, no one came to make sure we were OK, but other people who came in after us had better service than us, we asked for the dessert menu but we got so fed up with waiting we went to the bar to pay the bill and left, this was a birthday treat, and we were so disappointed with the service we received it has put us off going again

Booked a table for five of us best to do this before going sometimes it is busy. Food was good but had a bit of a wait till it arrived. Good selection of beers and wine as it's Greene King . But we will be back again.

What i love about the star is it's so close to countryside. I went there with my family for mother's day we booked at table for 12 all the staff were lovely and the one who looked after us was kimberley she was very lovely and attentive to my family food was brought out quickly and tasted lovely the only negative is the cheesy ciabatta bread was a bit over cooked but overall it was a lovely visit thank you to the Star team

Food was VERY good. And Georgia who looked after us couldn't do enough. We will definitely be coming back soon.

The food at the Star is lovely, I had a steak which was cooked to perfection, that coupled with the brilliant service from Geogia, made for a fantastic evening.

Mediocre food and too few staff

Visited the star for dinner. Food was hot and fresh and very tasty! Good value for money too - some great deals on the main menu. Staff were exceptionally accommodating and attentive. Excellent customer service skills and refreshingly very smiley, thank you Georgia and Chaney! Will definitely be returning soon, highly recommend!

7 of us booked our Sunday lunch here. On arrival we were welcomed by really lovely front of house staff. We all ordered Sunday roast which took rather a long time to arrive. The dinner was cold and we asked where was the broccoli and could we have more gravy. Staff brought some broccoli to table but said the gravy would be over 5 minutes as they didn't have any. Told the staff to forget it. Such a shame as it would have warmed the dinner up. After dinner a few of us decided to have coffee and dessert. On ordering it, we were told they had NO MILK. we were so shocked as this is just basic. This bad experience is down to the kitchin. No excuse really for running out of milk. Front of house staff were rushed of there feet, but they kept smiling. They definitely deserve credit. As for greene king. Get more staff . My friend got charged twice for her meal and had phoned and they keep hanging up. Absolutely disgusting. I personally wouldn't return Mary coogan

Very welcoming atmosphere, staff over and above on their attendance to your needs. Food was good, I’m fussy! However I got what I asked for. TIFF was more than helpful, in a good way. Over all a great experience will definitely go back again.

I have visited the Star a few times to work from in the afternoon and it never fails. The atmosphere is good and the staff are super friendly - got to chat with the GM, Aaron and the KM, Stuart. Both friendly and outstanding gentlemen. For lunch I went for the fish finger ciabatta which is now my go-to and I highly recommend it always a good quality lunch at a great price with the meal deal option to add a side and a drink. Thanks to the team for the consistently providing a warm and welcoming environment, delicious food and great service - I’ll be back very soon!

Visited Saturday 1/03/25, two couples. Table booked for 7pm, didn’t get seated until 7:15pm. The service was unbelievably slow.. didn’t get starters till after 8pm. The food was totally average, the lasagne was no better than a supermarket microwave meal… we gave up waiting for the server for dessert order, went to bar to pay and left. This used to be a good pub (last visited several years ago) but will not go back. The staff seemed inexperienced & over stretched! The decor was tired & holes in the ceiling. Don’t waist your time or money, go elsewhere…

Not good unfortunately. Such a shame. Location great. Venue tired. Food was awful. Cold and poor quality. Sent back 2 of the meals. Very disappointed.

Not impressed with the food. My lamb shank was nice but my kids had 11 chips on their plates alongside the main. Not great for vegetarians as there were no Beyond Burgers available so he had veggie sausage burger. Quite lacklustre. My mum's dish was cold but to be fair they took that meal off the bill. The waitress did try her best to be friendly.

Really disappointing me and my husband go to the star on a regular basis but we went the other day there was at least 6 -7 empty tables we went to order food and was told there only serving food to booked tables not walk ins, then moments later 5 people walked in didn't book a table but then ordered food.so why was money not good enough for 2 people but ok for 5 . Really re thinking the star

Very disappointed, food was very poor and service wasn’t great, we had a bad experience in dec 2023 because of service and disappointing food. We decided to give them another chance, but unfortunately the star is still the same, we haven’t been there for over a year. Oh well we defiantly wont be back.

The rugby was on the TV, which was very loud, I'm not everyone wanted to hear it! I did ask to turn it down a bit, this did not happen. Very disappointed with the meal , my partner had Hunters chicken, they said there was no bacon, when it came out , the cheese had welded itself to the dish, they replaced it straight away. The whole experience was a complete let down. £55 too.

The Star is a fantastic place to come and unwind after a long day or to catch up with friends and family. Brilliant value food, fine wine and a large choice of lagers. The staff, are all welcoming, caring, and will always do their best to ensure each and everyone is well looked after! A massive shoutout to Dawn and Tiffany who are always so happy to greet and welcome everybody! The Star is beautiful public house through and through and most definitely worth a visit!

Popped in for some supper Thursday early evening. Not busy, ordered drinks at the bar, found a table, menus on table, returned to bar to place order. Gammon, egg, chips & peas, pie, mash and veg. Pleased gammon came with egg & pineapple, however egg was undercooked. My partners pie was hard, the pastry, although the filling was tasty. Two alcoholic drinks, two man courses was £35. There is a two main courses deal for a good price that runs throughout the week.

Fast and friendly service. Food is delicious and affordable, staff are welcoming and make a big effort with our little girl

Superb ! I've been several times now and the food/service/prices are excellent and the pub has the added bonus of always being nice and warm on a chilli winters day.

We had Christmas dinner which was fantastic. Can honestly say, the meal, service and atmosphere was fantastic. Plenty of food, all delicious and piping hot. Staff were friendly and happy and so helpful. Just a really lovely all round experience for our Christmas lunch. Well done and thank you to everyone..... .....been a few times recently and have to say it's so lovely to see the return of a great pub clearly happy under great management..... well done and thank you to all for making our Christmas day feel special 💚

Massive let down - won’t be returning. Firstly, there was no evidence of our booking even though my FIL booked weeks before so we were lucky to be given a table! Was told to phone back when the party had decided if we wanted the festive or normal menu. Phoned and phoned multiple times at different times of the day and no answer. I ordered the nacho sharer which was very strange - not traditional nachos at all. The BBQ beef burger was burnt and the amount of pulled pork on top was pathetic (probably a tsp). Chips were good! One member ordered a meal which was advertised to come with broccoli but instead came with pale peas which didn’t look fresh at all. I didn’t feel full or satisfied so ordered the sticky toffee pudding which was pretty good. The service was good but due to the poor quality of the majority of the food, I won’t be returning.

Arrived at the star pub for a meal and few festive drinks with family. On our arrival we was welcomed by the amazing staff members taken to our table witch was perfect for our family party. The food was great well presented and was fantastic really felt welcome and appreciated wonderfull members of staff we will be visiting again.

After seeing Breakfast with Santa advertised on the Star’s Facebook page I took my two young children along. The Santa was excellent, along with the side kick elf called “Sparkle” great festive sing along and silly jokes straight out of a Christmas Cracker - had the kids in awe. I’ve never had breakfast there before, I don’t think it’s something they usually serve but it was delicious. Good job by the chef! The service also was good, relaxed enough to enjoy ourselves but still efficient and friendly. I hope you do this next year too as we will definitely come again.

It's a really nice pub inside. What we ordered they didn't have any of. Didn't have any chips. Food was expensive and it was very clearly powder mash potatoe Service was very slow even though there were only 2 other tables in when we were there

Luckily, it wasn't too busy when we went, so we could talk without shouting 😉 The food was superb and the service was excellent. We always have a lovely time there, which is why, when we talk about going out for a meal, The Star is the first name that comes up, even though it's a fair drive from where we live! Try it, you won't be disappointed 😀

We went out here to eat about two weeks ago on the Saturday the place was packed out but what can I say we ordered the cheese and bacon burger we got them their was no cheese or bacon when we asked them about it they brought it back out with it but then there was no lettuce tomato etc. also it tasted like it just got cremated cheap for what it is but won’t go back

First place I've been in ages where there was a good selection of gluten free on the menu so I didn't have to have steak or gammon . Was a lovely experience all round

Quiet on a Sunday afternoon, this was pre-booked for 4 of us. Service was ok, but food was decidedly mediocre. We even joked with our (helpful) server that one of our party's lasagne looked like half of it was missing. Food tasted OK, just presentation was lacking.

Sorry to say that the service was not good! Not the lads fault who was working the tables, probably the lack of staff. Our table was not cleared from the previous person and then when the food was brought to the table we had to wait for clean cutlery. The food was OK for the money but was cold. Sad to say I would not bother to visit again.

Worst Christmas lunch I've ever had. Looked like it had been cooked the day before, plated up and reheated in microwave. Potatoes and parsnips rock hard, yorkshire and stuffing not much better. Carrots, peas and brussels soft and mushy. We said something and were brought another bowl of hard potatoes, not sure they were freshly cooked, tasted more like frozen ones you get from supermarket. Asked for coffee after and they only had decaf! Not great! Won't be visiting again.

As our local village pub we feel very lucky to have this on our doorstep and recommend it to others outside the village! We highly rate the food, the friendly service & events that the pub puts on. We've even held our own event in a section of the pub which was such a great evening & the buffet was incredible.

Great spot in the village. Very welcoming, hot food and a good range of beers. A relaxed atmosphere and filled with happy people which made our visit that much more enjoyable. Will be back.

We have been coming to the star now for a few weeks, we have found the staff so friendly & welcoming, the food has been excellent (much better than when we came 4-5months ago) Benjamin has been amazing and goes above & beyond to make sure our food is perfect, I love how we walk in and no matter what staff member is on they say!!!! Is it the same drinks as last time. I think that’s a nice touch I to remember your customers orders when your such a busy pub, we definitely love this being your ur new local that we go to, Aaron is a great asset to the pub and the bar girls are amazing, especially the one with the blue hair. We love coming here and look forward to seeing you guys soon, Nik & Ant x

Had a table booked for 4pm so very quiet in the restaurant. We had starters and main meal , served promptly by Christie .Meal was good value and tasty and Christie was a great host, very attentive. I suggested that the guy that answered the phone when I rang to apologise that we were going to be a bit late learns some phone manners, really poor., apart from that we would go back again

Brilliant service. Food was made by Kerry and was delicious and hot. Well looked after. Staff were friendly. Was in and out in 45 mins.

Food was dreadful. Lasagne looked like it was microwaved to within an inch of its life. Don't go by pictures on menu. Presentation of food was not good. Have had better at a hospital canteen. Staff asked us how food was and we told them Lasagna was awful. They still charged for it. Won't be returning here anytime soon.

Very long waiting time in an empty pub, music way too loud, risotto was uncooked (rice was hard), I told the staff they just blasted it in the microwave (that is not going to cook the rice 😂, it was burning hot and still hard), returned it a second time and the waiter was rude to me, didn't apologise and just barked at me "that's risotto it's supposed to be like that".... No offense but I'm part Italian and worked in kitchens for years, that's not how risotto is supposed to be cooked 🤦‍♂️... It's okay if you put a bad dish out it happens to the best of us just do not gaslight me about it. Anyways, not an apology and just said "what do you want instead then?" Very disappointed, 3rd time coming and the first two weren't impressive either. Will not be back. They do not care. Also their vegan dish (the risotto) is actually not vegan because their ciabatta is cooked on the meat grill 🤦‍♂️ Food was not hot. Vegan burger I asked in replacement served with two onion rings because I asked no chips (could've put 5 idk? Make an effort?)

We visited the week before and we weren't impressed with the food, but thought it might be a one off. So visited again yesterday with family for lunch. There were 6 of us so we ordered 2 sharing platters as advertised on the menu. Baked camembert, chicken strips, salami, ciabatta. They arrived on 2 dinner plates cheese melted and running on the plates around a few bits of chicken and 2 pieces of salami and 2 slices of brown bread cut in half no finesse at all. I asked the waitress who was lovely where the ciabatta was, she said they had run out it was 12.30. We asked her for toasted bread which she did bring. The meals arrived 4 had pies again no finesse a few pieces of over cooked broccoli and some mash and pie dumped on a plate, it was edible but could have done with a selection of veg. The schnitzel was ok tbe hunters chicken was a very small piece of overcooked chicken in a much too big dish covered in sauce again edible but not enough. We arrived at 12.20 the table was ready but we had to ask for it to be cleaned. Very over priced I expect that standard from a hungry horse. I have to say tbe waitress was lovely.

Kept being told how good the food and service is here. Really do not like leaving negative feedback but on this occassion feel I have no choice. We booked a table for six and when we arrived we were left standing for over 10 minutes waiting for someone to acknowledge us, even though members of staff quite clearly saw us and walked around us. Eventually, we went to the bar to he told "I will be with you in a few minutes" this did not happen we ordered drinks and asked again after another 10 minutes where was our table? We were told yet again, " we will get to you in a few minutes" eventually after a half hour wait we got our table...Waited for someone to take our order for 20 minutes, when food eventually arrived it was all cold, hardly any chips with the burgers that cost nearly £15 and were small and burnt. One of our parties food was so cold it had to go back. Three of our guests wanted the beef & ale pie but was told they didn't have any. I totally sympathise that the staff may of been under pressure but there was a distinct lack of any visible management and the customer service definitely needs working on!

Well, returned for a second opinion and I shouldn’t have bothered. Saturday night, the diners had mainly finished. No one behind the bar so I had to wait 3 or 4 minutes to be served. Someone did walk through behind the bar, but ignored me. When I was served, the beer was ok and the barman was polite and welcoming. Again, every table in the place was covered with dirty glasses and air tables were wet and dirty. Apparently, they had been busy, but as the 3 or 4 staff only served about 10 people over the next 90 minutes yet still didn’t clear nor clean the tables, it seems that appearance of the pub doesn’t matter. Music at a more acceptable level but there is a lot to be done at this venue to make it acceptable. Bring on competition.

Music was far too loud in the bar area, so customers were shouting at each other to be heard. The music was a great selection but took centre stage, it should be background. On arrival, there were dirty glasses on a number of unoccupied tables and these stayed for upwards of another hour. The tables had not been wiped down from previous punters, so were sticky and wet. Shouldn't be left like that and so easy to fix . Beer was in good condition. Timothy Taylor Landlord. One of the other pumps was off. Fairly standard Greene King menu, I feel. Competitively priced, unfortunately my food was cold when it arrived, but the staff apologised and changed it without question. Pie good, mash and veg not so good and not much of it, hence the price I suppose. There is no competition in the area, so this large pub may have got complacent, however when The Fancott reopens, then there will be a need to get everything right. That said, I will return for a drink again.
