As our local village pub we feel very lucky to have this on our doorstep and recommend it to others outside the village! We highly rate the food, the friendly service & events that the pub puts on. We've even held our own event in a section of the pub which was such a great evening & the buffet was incredible.

We have been coming to the star now for a few weeks, we have found the staff so friendly & welcoming, the food has been excellent (much better than when we came 4-5months ago) Benjamin has been amazing and goes above & beyond to make sure our food is perfect, I love how we walk in and no matter what staff member is on they say!!!! Is it the same drinks as last time. I think that’s a nice touch I to remember your customers orders when your such a busy pub, we definitely love this being your ur new local that we go to, Aaron is a great asset to the pub and the bar girls are amazing, especially the one with the blue hair. Had a table booked for 4pm so very quiet in the restaurant. We had starters and main meal , served promptly by Christie .Meal was good value and tasty and Christie was a great host, very attentive. I suggested that the guy that answered the phone when I rang to apologise that we were going to be a bit late learns some phone manners, really poor., apart from that we would go back again

We visited the week before and we weren't impressed with the food, but thought it might be a one off. So visited again yesterday with family for lunch. There were 6 of us so we ordered 2 sharing platters as advertised on the menu. Baked camembert, chicken strips, salami, ciabatta. They arrived on 2 dinner plates cheese melted and running on the plates around a few bits of chicken and 2 pieces of salami and 2 slices of brown bread cut in half no finesse at all. I asked the waitress who was lovely where the ciabatta was, she said they had run out it was 12.30. We asked her for toasted bread which she did bring. The meals arrived 4 had pies again no finesse a few pieces of over cooked broccoli and some mash and pie dumped on a plate, it was edible but could have done with a selection of veg. The schnitzel was ok tbe hunters chicken was a very small piece of overcooked chicken in a much too big dish covered in sauce again edible but not enough. We arrived at 12.20 the table was ready but we had to ask for it to be cleaned. Very over priced I expect that standard from a hungry horse. I have to say tbe waitress was lovely.

Very long waiting time in an empty pub, music way too loud, risotto was uncooked (rice was hard), I told the staff they just blasted it in the microwave (that is not going to cook the rice 😂, it was burning hot and still hard), returned it a second time and the waiter was rude to me, didn't apologise and just barked at me "that's risotto it's supposed to be like that".... No offense but I'm part Italian and worked in kitchens for years, that's not how risotto is supposed to be cooked 🤦‍♂️... It's okay if you put a bad dish out it happens to the best of us just do not gaslight me about it. Anyways, not an apology and just said "what do you want instead then?" Very disappointed, 3rd time coming and the first two weren't impressive either. Will not be back. They do not care. Also their vegan dish (the risotto) is actually not vegan because their ciabatta is cooked on the meat grill 🤦‍♂️ Food was not hot. Vegan burger I asked in replacement served with two onion rings because I asked no chips (could've put 5 idk? Make an effort?)

Kept being told how good the food and service is here. Really do not like leaving negative feedback but on this occassion feel I have no choice. We booked a table for six and when we arrived we were left standing for over 10 minutes waiting for someone to acknowledge us, even though members of staff quite clearly saw us and walked around us. Eventually, we went to the bar to he told "I will be with you in a few minutes" this did not happen we ordered drinks and asked again after another 10 minutes where was our table? We were told yet again, " we will get to you in a few minutes" eventually after a half hour wait we got our table...Waited for someone to take our order for 20 minutes, when food eventually arrived it was all cold, hardly any chips with the burgers that cost nearly £15 and were small and burnt. One of our parties food was so cold it had to go back. Three of our guests wanted the beef & ale pie but was told they didn't have any. I totally sympathise that the staff may of been under pressure but there was a distinct lack of any visible management and the customer service definitely needs working on!

Well, returned for a second opinion and I shouldn’t have bothered. Saturday night, the diners had mainly finished. No one behind the bar so I had to wait 3 or 4 minutes to be served. Someone did walk through behind the bar, but ignored me. When I was served, the beer was ok and the barman was polite and welcoming. Again, every table in the place was covered with dirty glasses and air tables were wet and dirty. Apparently, they had been busy, but as the 3 or 4 staff only served about 10 people over the next 90 minutes yet still didn’t clear nor clean the tables, it seems that appearance of the pub doesn’t matter. Music at a more acceptable level but there is a lot to be done at this venue to make it acceptable. Bring on competition.

site_logo

Tony Mitchell . 2024-09-15

MORE AT Google

Music was far too loud in the bar area, so customers were shouting at each other to be heard. The music was a great selection but took centre stage, it should be background. On arrival, there were dirty glasses on a number of unoccupied tables and these stayed for upwards of another hour. The tables had not been wiped down from previous punters, so were sticky and wet. Shouldn't be left like that and so easy to fix . Beer was in good condition. Timothy Taylor Landlord. One of the other pumps was off. Fairly standard Greene King menu, I feel. Competitively priced, unfortunately my food was cold when it arrived, but the staff apologised and changed it without question. Pie good, mash and veg not so good and not much of it, hence the price I suppose. There is no competition in the area, so this large pub may have got complacent, however when The Fancott reopens, then there will be a need to get everything right. That said, I will return for a drink again.

We were sat in the back end of the seating area despite the place being near empty close to a couple. We both got fed up and went to the bar to place our respective orders. A couple of minutes later I was told the mixed grill I ordered wasn't available. Shortage of basic items is all too common here so I placed an alternative order for lamb shank. 50 minutes later nothing had arrived so I went to the bar to chase the order up and after checking with the kitchen, was told it would be two minutes. I queried this and was then told four and a half minutes. The food did arrive quickly but when it did it was clear the dish had been microwaved as the plate was hot and the meat was still cold. Four and a half minutes was clearly the time programmed on the microwave. I returned the dish and was asked if I wanted to re-order. I declined as my guest, who'd ordered another dish, was already eating. I went hungry and he felt awkward. Clearly the order had never been placed or the kitchen missed it. I have visited The Star regularly but never seen it so quiet so there was no excuse for their abysmal performance given the abundance of staff. Four beers were cancelled off the bill so only one meal was paid for but that doesn't make up for a ruined evening.

Terrible experience that completely ruined what should have been a nice family dinner. Table booked for 18.30. Drinks ordered first, and they did come quite quick. However one was missing. We asked and they said they were bringing it. We then ordered food at around 19.00. This was when we were told it was a 45 minute wait for food. Having got the drinks we had no choice but to accept this, although I wish we had been told right at the start. After 20 minutes we were still waiting for the last drink. We asked again and they said they were just getting it from the cellar. 10 minutes later it still hadn't arrived. We chased it up again, and then were told they didn't actually have the drink. For the food, we waited about 1hr 15mins before deciding to chase it up. We were told it would be 5 mins, it was just being plated up. This was an outright lie as about 15mins later it still hadn't come. We chased up again, and then were told that they didn't have some of the pies so would Wellington be okay. Everyone said this was fine as we all just wanted the food. After asking again how long it would be again we were told 5 mins, which didn't make sense unless the Wellingtons had already been made! Anyway 10mins later we finally gave up. It was 20.45. The staff apologised and said we can have the drinks on the house. This was nice, but definitely didn't make up for the fact that we still hadn't eaten anything, and just kept being lied to about the timings. I don't know whether it was poor management or staffing issues, but it was so disappointing, and we will not be going back. I really dislike writing bad reviews, but there was just so much wrong with this experience that I felt I had to do a review!

Just absolutely terrible! I arrived at the bar, where none of the staff acknowledged my presence and took 10 mins to even get me seated, i should have known from this that it wasn't going to be a good experience. My friend and I ordered our food and drinks, the drinks came but we waited for our meal. After getting a bit lost in conversation with my friend, we asked the staff after 40 mins and they said that it was going to be another 20 mins! The waitress said that we should have been told this when ordering, however we weren't informed. If we had known this we would have gone somewhere else. The waitress then came back 10 mins later and said they didn't have what i ordered, this was after 50 mins of placing the order - total shambles. We got our food after 1.5 hours and it poor. My chips weren't cooked and there wasn't much substance to my friend's pie, which they claim is award winning! However, we were so hungry at this point that we just needed something. After chatting to other diners it was clear that everyone was having the same experience. Lots of items on the menu were unavailable and considering they weren't taking walk-ups and booking was essential, its a mystery how they got it so wrong. I did feel for the waiting staff as they had to handle lots of justified customer complaints, but clearly new management is needed. We ended up only paying for our drinks, but its safe to say we won't be returning and i advise you to steer clear!

We pre-booked a table for 1.00pm to take both our 93 year old mothers out for a birthday lunch. On arrival we were shown to a table but given no advice how to order so were expecting some level of table service. Nothing happened so we found our own menus and assumed we had to order at the bar which we did just before 1.30 at which point we were told there was a 40 minute wait. Not what you expect when you have pre-booked but we were not in a hurry so decided to wait. After waiting for almost an hour no food had arrived so went back to the bar and the manager gave us excuses about being short staffed and we would be served shortly. Waited another half hour then back to the bar to be told by the manager we were the next table to be served. Twenty minutes later we received our starters which were served barely warm. After further visits to the bar we continued to wait until 4.15pm and having still not received our mains decided to call it a day and leave the restaurant as our parents were in serious discomfort having sat there for 3 1/2 hours. This has completely ruined a special birthday celebration. An absolutely disgraceful way to treat customers, I have never in my life experienced anything like it.

On arrival at 6.30pm we were told there were a fair few items unavailable for food on the menu, we then ordered drinks and some turned up with the exception of one which we had to chase twice. A while after the second time of chasing we were told they didn't actually have that drink in stock! We were then told that there was a 45 minute wait for the food only after we were half way through our drinks. We ordered our starter and mains altogether and requested they all be brought out together. We chased 2-3 times and were continuously told 5 minutes'we are just plating it up' 20 minutes later were told 2 of the items were not available and did we want an alternative!? We agreed hoping that at least some of us would start getting our food. ...Meanwhile the poor couple next to us, one of them ended up wearing his whole pint and chose to leave due to being soaking wet... The starter we ordered finally came out with no show of any mains. Again we were told 5 minutes its on its way. 20 minutes later my husband spoke to a waiting staff and said we had to leave as it had been 2.5 hours and no show of food. They then quickly told the kitchen to stop cooking our tables order!!! Clearly our food had not even been started on yet! We ended up getting an apology that they had an influx of orders and the kitchen had backed up (the place was less than half empty indoors and outdoors). They waived the charges for the drinks and a starter. We had a diabetic family member and a baby who should have been in bed ages before we left. The table behind us had had a similar experience that evening and on our way out they wished us a good evening and hoped that we would find somewhere to get some food in the end! Given that we had come out for a lovely family evening we would have appreciated honesty if they were unable to accommodate us or even that they were not close to getting our food to us after the 45 minute wait time had passed, we could have then moved on and found somewhere else to have our meal. Instead we ended up having lost the whole evening and still had no food to show for it. On the way to our cars one of the waiting staff was laughing and smiling in our direction talking to someone (hmmm...). Safe to say we will not be returning as we ended up picking up a very quick takeaway en route home)! Terrible service, food a no-show. Overall would recommend finding an alternative place to eat altogether...

Beautiful pub...but in arrival could feel tense atmosphere with staff...ordered drinks then went to order food, told 40 minute wait, to which we didn't mind waiting. Hour and a quarter later, I asked how long food may be...poor barmaid said...I think it's going to be alot longer, she apologiesed and refunded us. It was not her fault, however, we didn't see any food going out and the pub was not that busy. I would hazard a guess at poor management and staff should have been told not to take food orders...to save them all the fallout, and to save customers waisting time. Its a shame because the menu looked really good...I would advise if you want to visit for food to call ahead and ensure there are no issues.

I don't normally like posting negative reviews, but feel our experience last Sunday was below standard service. We have been to The Star on many occasions and have had a good experience. We had a table for 4 people booked for 3pm. We arrived early, as it was lovely weather we sat outside with our drinks. We noticed a lot of outside tables had not been cleared of glasses. There were only 3 tables with people sitting at them. We went inside for our table at 3pm. There was a queue at the bar so had to wait to speak to someone to inform them we were there for our table. When we advised the member of staff he looked around at the tables, which were majority of were empty of guests, but not dirty plates and glasses. He told was to wait whilst he had to clear a table. We sat down at 3.25pm. Then proceeded to wait to be served. We could see they were probably short staffed as no one had approached us after 20mins of waiting, so we approached the bar to ask if we could order, we were informed it was table service and they would be with us soon. We ordered our food. When the roast arrived we had to chase up the roast potatoes, side of onion rings, a jug of water and gravy, which came as we nearly finished our dinner. There was a sever lack of customer service, no apologies. If they were understaffed, maybe mention it, we would appreciate that much more than sitting around chasing people. I really hope you get things sorted soon.

Visited for lunch (31/7) and was disappointed with the service. Queued at the bar and when the waiter told me my partner's starter was out of stock, I said one sec whilst I went to the table (16) which is about 3 metres away and clearly in sight, I must have been about 10 seconds by which time the waitress had left the bar and I had to join the back of the queue to order with another member of the team . Annoyingly there was a 45 minute wait on food which meant several additional tables ordered before us. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a waiter to wait such a short time for a replacement item when there's an item out of stock.

How this was allowed to leave the kitchen is unbelievable.Sent one meal back for the replacement to come back with a charred bun and dried burger Surely cooking a burger without burning it is a standard skill a chef/cook requires to work in a restaurant? The staff gave no apology and didn’t seem to care less All I can say is McDonalds never burn their buns and burgers, wished we had gone there now.

Phoned to say we would be 10 minutes late for our booking, and got a lovely friendly staff. Got there and then had to wait till the two bar persons finished their wee chat - so we waited longer. Then was seated next to a loud party (rest of restaurant empty). We asked to be moved, and they did this pleasantly, but i think this confused them. Our starter took ages, several wine options not available, and several main courses not available. After finishing our starter, we then waited, and waited, and waited after an hour of waiting, we went to remind the bar staff we were waiting. When our main courses turned up, we were told that we had to wait until the party of 14 had finished! Food okay, but the wait really put me off. It was a rainy Friday night, but if you were to come her on a sunny summer night, the place (I assume) would be full and client would get upset at the wait. I would be hard pushed to return, no apologies for the wait, etc. Need a manager there to manage.

Our first visit to The Star and was pleasantly surprised. There was a great atmosphere with live music and the place was buzzing. The new manager Scott served us, was very friendly and we would return again.

Visited as there was live music on. The pub was warm , busy and comfortable. Staff were really friendly especially the landlord Scott. Didn’t eat as had already eaten, but the food looked really good and will return to try it. Well worth a visit.

I kept driving past The Star pub on my way to and from work. I saw advertised that they do “Steak Thursdays” for £10-50. I decided one Thursday afternoon to give it a try with my wife. We both thought that the food was excellent. Better than we had expected for the price and a good sized portion of fries, onion rings, peas and grilled tomato with the rump steak. A very nice pub with a friendly welcoming barman. Kerry cooked our meal and chatted to us after we had eaten and we will definitely return. Kerry asked us if we would leave a review as the place is under new management and I said that I would be more than happy to. It’s a very nice pub with plenty of parking and a very reasonably priced menu which will see us visit again on another evening.

Sadly had to go around numerous tables collecting cutlery, serviettes and full condiments as our selected table didn't have much of anything. Assume they had been busy, but would of thought it would have been an automatic restock as part of the table clean down after guests have left. Tasty hot swift food, in a lovely traditional styled establishment.

Disappointing food. Sunday lunch not very warm, veg all dried up. As suggested by others, food seems to have gone downhill. Wine was ok, though.

Never waited so long for service in a pub restaurant like this awful. We ordered a starter but after 45 mins we told staff to forget our starters and just have our mains that took another 40 minutes when we got are mains I had gammon asked for pineapple but I got an egg on top Could not waited any longer just put the egg to the side would not recommend this place to any one what was needed here is more trained staff I feel sorry any booked for mothers day. Was not an enjoyable experience here they could do a lot better.

Lovely pub serving very good food, my friend and I visited on a weekday evening, I had the pea, mint and courgette risotto, really lovely except for the overload of rocket that I failed to identify when browsing the menu- I would have requested NO rocket. My friend had the mushroom pie with mash and veg which was very nice but a little dry. The pub was very quiet although I know it livens up, however, it was great to be able to hear each other speak! Service was good, staff were very pleasant. Hope to return soon!

One star for the Star. We took visiting family members here for lunch as it is nomally ok. We walked in, were not welcomed or even acknowledged. We found a table, chose our food, and approached the bar. The young lad with long hair either didn't see us or chose to ignore us, so we went to him. The lad then acknowledged us without a welcome or a smile and then said that they were not taking walk ins as they had so many bookings (there were three tables with people on them!). We then said that another member of staff had told us that food was available, so he agreed to take our order as it was the manager who we had previously spoken to. Halfway through ordering, he told us that it was a 45 min wait. The pub was empty apart from the three tables! There were no signs up that they were only taking pre booked customers also. We promptly left and drove to another place which was far busier and had far friendlier and efficient staff!

When we first booked we were told only 6pm available. When we arrived it was nearly empty. We ordered drinks they had no Brandy or Pernod which wasn't a good start. We ordered food the starter's which where fine. The mains arrived 2 were fine but the Hunter's Chicken bbq sauce had congealed and had a skin. They did another one which was fine but the others had finished their food. We have been here a few times when we vist family but may not visit again.

Normally a lovely place. Very disappointed this evening. Party booked and pre ordered food. Table booked for 1930 and main courses not served until 2045. Food was ok but vegetables not enjoyed by most. Service was slow but staff friendly. Place was so cold we ate in out coats. Even though pre ordered some food not available. We are hoping for desserts before 10pm . Not enough glasses or correct cutlery. Come on green king pull your finger out!

I wish I could give a higher rating, but I'm afraid there was nothing very special about this place at all. The food was okay - mediocre, no better, no worse. The smallest portion of cheesecake for dessert that I think I've ever been served, and although the waitress was pleasant - and she was - it would have been nice if we'd not had to hunt her down when we wanted coffee, if you know what I mean. Maybe we just visited on a night when things weren't quite as good as usual. I'd like to think so, because it looks like a cute place to eat, but it was sadly lacking on the evening I was there. Sorry guys .... just a little more effort, and you'd have got a different rating.

We were invited to try this pub, and we were not disappointed. Service was in good time and friendly, we didn't feel like we were left waiting but felt like we had enough time to choose what we wanted without feeling rushed. The food we had was very tasty, my wife having the Porchetta and I had the fish and chips, both were very tasty. I gave in to temptation and l had the Apple crumble, this was a lot larger than we had expected. No wonder the waiter brought two spoons! My only critique is that it could have done with more than one small scoop of ice cream. I'm sure if I would have asked I could have had another as it didn't last the crumble. But it didn't ruin a loverly meal and experience. The manager even recommended a trip across the road to the antique store, where my wife managed to find a much searched for Umbrella stand, so thank you for that too.

I was booked in here with the rest of my family for the 2 nights either side of my son's wedding. The accommodation is situated in the car park with the beer garden opposite. This made it too noisy for me to get an early night on the Friday as there were cars driving right past my room and a very noisy party in the beer garden. The person in the room above made a telephone call and I heard most of his side of that too. It finally quietened down around midnight. Saturday we were too busy partying elsewhere and when we got back at half midnight everything was quiet. The bed however was one of the comfiest I've ever slept on! I did struggle with the room being very hot as there was only 1 small opening window and I couldn't really sleep with the door open! As the website says it provides Bed and Breakfast, I was looking forward to a cooked breakfast. Sadly the reason there is a fridge in your room, is because you get presented with a small carton of milk and there is a small pack of cornflakes in your room, plus a cereal bar. Not what any of my family were expecting!
