We were invited to try this pub, and we were not disappointed. Service was in good time and friendly, we didn't feel like we were left waiting but felt like we had enough time to choose what we wanted without feeling rushed. The food we had was very tasty, my wife having the Porchetta and I had the fish and chips, both were very tasty. I gave in to temptation and l had the Apple crumble, this was a lot larger than we had expected. No wonder the waiter brought two spoons! My only critique is that it could have done with more than one small scoop of ice cream. I'm sure if I would have asked I could have had another as it didn't last the crumble. But it didn't ruin a loverly meal and experience. The manager even recommended a trip across the road to the antique store, where my wife managed to find a much searched for Umbrella stand, so thank you for that too.

First of all, when we arrived the table that I reserved had been given to someone else. Secondly, half of my meal was almost cold and the egg that I asked to be well fried wasn't. Thirdly, two members of staff were having a shouted conversation from behind the bar with another diner at the table right beside us, such that we had to complain that we could not hear ourselves talking. (They were shouting partly to be heard over the inane muzack.) My experience the last time I was here wasn't much different, so this is the last time.

My sons wedding, a lovely venue and the staff were welcoming and friendly. I will say now having spoken to my son and found the cost per head I need to complain. 60 ,15 of those young children), guests and we were all hungry. A few bowls of pasta a dish of roast new potatoes, a dish roast veg , salad and chicken even the legs were cut in half.. Then in the evening pizza and chips.....the chips came out after the pizza's had been eaten. Come on White Hart, I could of catered for this at half the price, it is a rip off. 80% of us wedding guests had some sort of sickness bug, I am not saying it was the food but my son did e mail to say this just to give you heads up...no response.....very poor .

Been lots of times to the white hart having lived in Ampthill since we were born, the service was good however there was a severe fly issue in the pub and around our dinner. I would highly recommend this getting sorted out asap as spoken to a few people since who experienced the same problem. I would say it’s a pest control issue and now pleasant whatsoever

A fantastic restaurant. This was recommended by the owner of our accommodation and it lived up to expectations. We had pizza which were fantastic. It's great to get a wood fired pizza in a non-italian restaurant. The staff were excellent and showed an interest in where we were from and why we were in the area. The downside is that you have to pay to park in a nearby public car park

Thought we’d try here for lunch, and the food was actually pretty good, with a varied menu….which was what appealed to us. That is where the good news ends. Service was pretty much the worst we’ve ever received, and to top it off they sneak a 10% service charge ion to your bill, even for a table of 2. The young lady that served us in the restaurant appeared like it was her first day and had been plonked there off the street. No idea what ales they had on draught and made me walk to the bar to look for myself. There was one option! My wife ordered a glass of champagne, to which she was asked “small, medium or large” Are you kidding!!! What then turned up was flat and tasted like the bottle had been open for a month. When queried, the bar staff actually argued and said it was freshly opened…..eventually swapping it for an alternative drink. The shouting and screaming coming from the kitchen also detracted from the experience. Massive disappointment, and I having looked it up here it is clear that we aren’t the only ones. The lack of management response to reviews clearly shows they don’t give two hoots either. Save your money and go anywhere else. Shame as the food was good, but lacking everywhere else.

We held the wake at the White Hart after my mother's funeral. We paid £18 per head for a preselected buffet for around 35 people, some of whom had travelled many miles to pay their respects. The buffet consisted of 2 or 3 plates of mediocre sandwiches and one plate of hummus dip and a few peppers. The latter went very quickly as there just wasn't enough. The sandwiches were barely enough. The place itself has a nice feel to it and the private function room was ideal. Similarly the staff were efficient and helpful. This is review is purely about the extortionate charge made for a few sandwiches and a plate of hummus. Oh, there were also 2 big bowls of standard fayre fries. Great. Not being one to rush to give negative views, and baring in mind the occasion, I went in to the White Hart the next day and spoke privately to a very helpful assistant manager who took the time to listen to my issues and made plenty of notes, assuring me he would pass them up the line to more senior management. I have no doubt he did that. And yet after 2 weeks there has been no response and I doubt one is forthcoming. I won't be returning and certainly caution against booking an important event here.

While the food itself was good, service was not. We had one course and a coffee and it took 2 plus hours (it didn't even seem to be that busy). We had to ask what was happening with our order as the table next to us who had arrived and ordered after us were served well before us, while we just waited without any communication or explanation from the staff. When we did ask, the meal appeared quite quickly which just made us wonder if they had simply forgotten us and the meals had been waiting in a heated service area. Then we waited ages for the plates to be removed, eventually managed to order some coffees which arrived 15 minutes later and were at best luke warm. Staff were pleasant enough (just a little inattentive) but unless you have a lot of time on your hands I wouldn't recommend eating here.

It's gorgeous, but we won't be back. Booked their family room for our young family and I genuinely don't understand how you can promote a family friendly stay when the room is almost completely inaccessible with a pram. The room wasn't cleaned well, when I hopped out the shower, you could see the former guests had written "I see dead people" in the mirror, visible only with the steam. Hilarious, but definitely hadn't been cleaned properly! When we came down at 5.30pm, we were told to be careful on the stairs because a drunk woman had thrown up on the stairs. At 5.30pm! We went here for our Christmas lunch as a family, the restaurant was very comfortable, not crowded out with extra tables. The service was very slow with the waiter and waitresses not actually serving but asking for food to be passed along like a school canteen. The lobster and prawn starter was very small with one small piece of lobster, no bread and butter. Drinks took ages to arrive, the first drink given was Prosecco or elderflower but nothing for younger children. We ordered well in advance but still several meals had to go back. I had the vegetarian meal which should have been stuffed cauliflower but was a small cauliflower head with a bit of something on the top. The cauliflower was inedible it was totally hard. What a waste of money. We were then served cheese and biscuits all the biscuits were broken into pieces, these we did send back . There was no de-caff tea, so went without that as well at £95 a head it was quite disgraceful. I don’t know what was going on in the kitchen but all the vegetables were really hard. We enjoyed being with our family but will never go back there again. Just one extra warning a service tip is automatically added , we asked to take it off so we could tip accordingly but they said no.

Disappointing to see the manager sat enjoying a pint after finishing working when staff were clearly rushed off their feet. Please sort your pub sign out. I have read previous reviews and the consensus is generally the same on the service being poor. Food is generally okay although my pork was overdone on this occasion, however, I would have expected better for Amphill prices ! Overall, we won't be going back as there are plenty of other gastro pubs locally, certainly with better service and food and furthermore better access to parking . Me and my family went out to an early Christmas brunch here. The restaurant looked nice. We ordered our food and I ordered the pancakes but I asked specifically to just have yoghurt and syrup (no honey) . Meanwhile the food of the other members at the table said that the food was cold. And my food arrived with honey and granola which i said specifically to the waitress I didn’t want. She got quite ‘sassy’ with me when I told her what I wanted to order. She said she would have to charge me extra if I wanted to change my food. I told her no and that she had to change it. She came back several times and accused me of not ordering the maple syrup pancakes to the other waitress. She said they’re may have been a mix up with the words. So she went to the kitchen brought me back a plate with granola pancakes (which I also didn’t order) and a tiny bit of maple syrup ‘dumped’ on top of the honey which was previously on my plate. So i thought to myself ‘no tip for you’ . I trust she didn’t use her common sense when it comes to simple listening skills and good customer service. I will not be coming back here again. But of course I do understand they were busy and that is the reason this isn’t a 0 out of 5 review.

This used to be a great pub/restaurant a few years ago under different management and was the place to meet up with friends for a drink in a smart, clean well run pub . Sadly since then the place has gone downhill ! I tried a visit again recently to see if things had improved, they hadn't ! The place is looking tired and grubby. I also had to return our drinks as the ale was completely off. The drinks were exchanged without fuss and bar staff very friendly but it was disappointing nonetheless. Will not be rushing back anytime soon !

Judging by the amount of negative reviews I’m surprised we gave this place another chance. But with ampthill lights switch on we booked a table for drinks inside. When we arrived our table wasn’t ready, and we were given one in the restaurant instead which wasn’t too much of a problem. Until… We ordered my daughter some food. Beans came out freezing cold, we sent them back and the chef had clearly just thrown them in a microwave until they were almost inedible. Mash came out of a packet. Our food came out wrong, missing things. Other people were sending food back to the kitchen. The staff had no idea what they were going, I actually feel sorry for the girls that work there. They have no support from management and clearly haven’t been given any direct training. This place is an absolute shambles. How long are they doing to continue like this until they take notice of customer feedback and start to change things? The food is terrible!!! Get new chefs and train your staff. It’s such a shame this in the centre of Ampthill when other places could be benefiting instead.

The rooms were okay, but certainly not worth the money charged. Got burnt by the towel rail which was insanely hot, lawsuit waiting to happen there. There were two real issues were the price and the service. Getting served in the main bar was an exercise in patience. Twenty minutes with no one else at the bar. Breakfast in the morning was even worse. Sat at our table for thirty five minutes before we could order, and that was only because i eventually pointed out that we'd been waiting and checkout was in a half hour. Twenty five minutes for a coffee because "we're really backed up on hot drinks". Didn't like it when i pointed out that no one had been near the coffee machine for ten minutes as i was sitting opposite. Went for a wedding and the bride and groom were happy. Fortunately i never have to go back to this place. Avoid.

Had a totally enjoyable overnight stay here...The rooms are beautifully appointed . Dinner was enjoyable although we did have to ask 3 times for some tap water. Breakfast was faultless and the staff a pleasure

Mixed experience regarding the food we ordered from the main menu. My friend's spaghetti bolognaise was very good and cost £14. However, I went for a large portion of fish and chips at £18.00 and was very disappointed. The fish portion looked impressive until I sawed my way through the batter-it was really hard-and found that it consisted of an extremely dried out and thin amount of fish encased in a very large amount of batter. The mushy peas that came with it were also very dry. The chips were excellent. but, really not worth£18.

Nice place in nice village. Even nicer (and efficient) staff, who are truly helpful in any way they can. Room was good, bathroom too. Why one star missing? Too many stairs for my currently messed up right leg ... though it is hard to take it out on the White Hart!

Absolutely disgusting place and so unclean. Tables cluttered with dirty dishes and absolutely no effort made by staff to clean up. We watched 5 different groups enter the resteruant then turn around and leave due to the dirty tables. Staff didn’t bother to offer us a menu even though they knew we were there for food. The menu on the wall outside is completely different to the menu inside and staff were absolutely clueless. Bar top was filthy with spilt drinks and again no effort by staff made to clean it, even though the place was quiet. Went to order food at the bar as we were sick of waiting for waitress to return (even though she promised to clean our table when we arrived, then immediately disappeared, never to return!). When ordering food, they tried to add a £4 service charge to one dish…..even though we were the ones doing all the effort and going to the bar to order ourselves. We immediately cancelled and walked out. Awful, clueless staff who obviously didn’t care, and dirty, unclean place. Won’t be returning!

We came as a family last night, pre booked as it was fireworks and we’re a family of 4. To begin with my husband had to repeat the order 3 times, to come back to the table and tell me how much, working out we’d been over charged. Then had to repeat it for a 4th time. We then got the mains brought to us before the starter. When the mains did arrive they were then cold. After eating our food and sitting with our dirty plates in front of us for about half an hour we had a waiter come and ask if we had any empty glasses, we did he then asked for our 6 year old son to pass them him. I asked if the plates could get cleared and the children’s puddings brought out which we’d ordered at the beginning of the meal. Another 20 minutes passed and nothing had been done. I went to complain and ask again for the pudding and explained everything that had happened since arriving, the waiter even said “that’s abit embarrassing “ I said yes and we wouldn’t be back. It wasn’t even busy as it was only us and another couple there so not sure why everything went so bad but it’s not the experience we were expecting.

Given it about 100 chances, everytime stinks like vomit..staff blame it on the drains behind the bar! Its vile. Good food, 50/50 friendly staff…young attitude on the lads that work there. Only reason anyone ever goes now is because it’s the only place in ampthil. Need to up their game as everyone’s saying the same thing.

The food, as always is great at The White Hart. We didn't have to wait long for it either. The service has been a bit hit and miss recently, but they've definitely turned a corner now as last night the service was exceptional! Our waitress was very attentive, kept checking on us, asked if the food was OK, if we needed more drinks etc.. You could see she clearly loves her job as she was the same with other tables. Thank you for a really enjoyable evening 😊

Visited on Saturday, 30th September, with my partner and our 2 year old nephew. After 15-20minutes, the food came out, but we were still waiting on the drinks 10 minutes later. I had to ask for the drinks to be served. The food tasted fine, and we ate most of it. However, on the ride back home (about 1.5 hours after eating the food), our nephew projectile vomited in the car. This happened twice more later that evening. My partner and I didn't feel great either - lethargic and upset stomach. In addition, I went to the loo before leaving the pub and just before the stairs, the area smelt of vomit. My partner noticed the same thing. As of Monday morning, the baby is having a medical check-up as he still has an upset stomach, diarrhea and hasn't eaten since Saturday evening. For us all not to have felt well and eaten different dishes shows something severely wrong.

I was booked in here with the rest of my family for the 2 nights either side of my son's wedding. The accommodation is situated in the car park with the beer garden opposite. This made it too noisy for me to get an early night on the Friday as there were cars driving right past my room and a very noisy party in the beer garden. The person in the room above made a telephone call and I heard most of his side of that too. It finally quietened down around midnight. Saturday we were too busy partying elsewhere and when we got back at half midnight everything was quiet. The bed however was one of the comfiest I've ever slept on! I did struggle with the room being very hot as there was only 1 small opening window and I couldn't really sleep with the door open! As the website says it provides Bed and Breakfast, I was looking forward to a cooked breakfast. Sadly the reason there is a fridge in your room, is because you get presented with a small carton of milk and there is a small pack of cornflakes in your room, plus a cereal bar. Not what any of my family were expecting!

Thank you to Jane for her excellent and friendly 5* service and to the Globe Inn for some decent vegan options. It is very helpful to have the drinks flagged as vegan
