I’m staying here for 3 nights with my son, He suggested coming here, but we discovered it was a French night and I live in France! I have never had Cote de Boeuf as good as tonight’s.. I think the chef needs to show some of our chefs how to cook it! The pub was also beautiful. Thankyou, I’m sure he will be back soon, and I will come on my next visit..

Having just had the most bizarre experience at our local pub, and discussing it with the party we were with, I feel compelled to share this publicly. We visited The Five Bells yesterday, and noticed they now have a fridge with incredible, dry aged large cuts of meat on display. We reached out to friends, and arranged to visit the following evening. After a few pre-dinner drinks in the garden, we headed to the bar to order. I requested my steak to be Medium - Well. A short while later the food began to come. We requested cutlery so two of the guests could start theirs before it got cold, this never came, and once the last bit of food came the cutlery arrived. My friends steak was cooked perfectly, but after cutting into mine I noticed it was well-done (if over...). We called a waiter over, explained the issue, and he began walking off. We called him back, and requested he took the steak with him to be replaced. He begrudgingly did this, with no acknowledgement of our dissatisfaction. 20+ mins later their was no replacement, so we headed into the bar to request our money back. All guests had finished eating, and post a final drink, they had to head home. I tried explaining the issue to the bar-man, and was greeted with 'I'm not the chef' as he walked off. My steak then came to me, stood at the bar. I said it was unfortunately too late as we needed to go, so a refund would be preferred. A very friendly waitress came over from the restaurant and asked if we'd like a manager, I said yes. The 'Owner' then came over, incredibly hostile and asked what the issue was. This was where things got uncomfortable... I explained we had been in, saw the great cuts of steak, and were disappointed to receive the steak over done. The 'Owner' then proceeded to call me a 'condescending kn*b', in front of a full bar/ restaurant with no regard for those around him and instructed me not to tell him how to run his business (which I never did), and that he knew he had a fridge with steaks in it. I was told ' your steak was pink under the light' and cooked exactly how you asked. I had shown this steak, cut in half to all 3 guests with me, and we all agreed it was cooked within an inch of it's life, and certainly not med-well. I was then asked how long I thought a replacement steak took to cook. I stated 3 mins a side + rest, he laughed, and asked if I thought I was the only customer in the restaurant? This uncomfortable exchange went on for some time, before lips shaking, he stated 'maybe I have taken this too personally'. The other guest was asked, 'was he condescending', to which he replied, 'not really'. The owner then said 'see, I told you he was condescending!' - incredibly uncomfortable encounter for all involved. I mentioned we were local, and visited frequently, explained the service and food were always great and asked for things to calm down. - to my surprise, he responded with ' I know you were in here last night'. He then asked how I'd like to proceed, I said I'd have the steak which had only just come to find me at the bar. At this point he handed me cash, and told me not to come back. As me and the other guest turned around, under his breath he mutters 'f*ck off', and other inaudible expletives. This was not only humiliating, in front of a full bar, but outright unacceptable. Just a real shame, every experience over the last 3 + yrs, has been exceptional. I have quite literally never experienced an unprovoked attack like this, just because 'I thought' my steak was overcooked.

Went for Easter Sunday lunch. We all had the Roast Sirloin of Beef. Yummy! I also had a pudding of Rhubarb Eton Mess and a cappuccino. I love rhubarb but it would have been better with more traditional berries. Not that I left anything. It was still scrumptious. 😀 It is also a dog friendly pub with a jar of dog biscuits by the entrance from the beer garden.

Great to see the Bells back to former glory! Haven't been in years as the food was dire! Went for Sunday lunch , everything was amazing! Its always been a great pub, the atmosphere was great, the staff were superb, and the food was top drawer. Possibly the best sunday roast I've had, and I've had a few. Every thing was so flavoursome and the beef was generous and perfectly cooked. The veg which lets be honest is usually a plate filler for a sunday roast was fantastic, wonderfully flavoured carrots and parsnips and a banging cauli cheese. Great wine list also with amazingly priced reds. Good baked cheesecake to polish me off! Well done to all involved, wonderful friendly service and top cooking!

Have been here several times and have never been disappointed. Service and food is excellent, both well above standard pub expectations. Good options for vegetarians and vegans which has been handy when I have come here in a group. Large garden area with shade. Additionally two free charge points for electric cars, so you can charge while you dine. UPDATE; like everywhere the charge points aren't free anymore.

Warm welcome, seated for lunch, wasn’t told any specials, wasn’t asked if we had any allergies. Choice of food was ok. Ordered our food , when it arrived 1 portion of chips was missing but waitress said I didn’t order it. We ordered two steaks, given no steak knives, they only asked if we wanted steak knives when we had nearly finished. Wasn’t asked if we wanted any desserts. Food was nice but over priced.

Today we had lunch at the 5 Bells of Stanbridge, to quietly celebrate my 71st bidet tomorrow. Wow! In all my years this honestly was the best I've ever had. Warm welcome, great table, attentive staff; all were top notch. The food was out of this world! The haggis scotch egg was wonderful, the bubble & squeak was a homely delight. The (huge) sirloin steak roast was rich, tender and utterly delicious. We shared an apple & plum crumble with custard and barely made it to the end alive. The Bells is family owned and it's family & dog friendly, with an excellent atmosphere. I really can't recommend it highly enough. Thank you to all involved - we'll be back :-)

We had the beef Wellington which was nice but two issues with the sides. Firstly we were almost overcharged as the wellington comes with two sides but they were on our bill. Secondly the sides were really just a bit lacking. The chips were cold/flaccid and the mushrooms were dry/ overcooked. Such a shame as everything else was great. Friendly staff and lovely historic venue. Such a shame, perhaps just an off night for the kitchen?

The staff were all great too and even helped us with a discussion our children were having about the reality of Father Christmas. Appalling service. When spending £600 plus on a meal would expect a pleasant friendly service. Instead we left feeling unwelcome and guilty for being there. Was my daughter’s baptism meal and was ruined by staff with serious attitude towards everything we said or politely asked for. This pub has always been a firm favourite place to eat whether it be as a couple, family or with friends but our last few experiences have been disappointing - service is slow, orders incorrect. Visited today for Father’s Day - service was painfully slow (despite the restaurant not being full and it not being peak time for food) and portion sizes for what was being charged was a joke. A cheese board costing £10 with 4 crackers and 3 thin slices of cheese is not reasonable… Will not be rushing back as we have tried and tried again - wishing it was the pub it once was.

The 5 Bells Stanbridge is for me the go to pub! Under new management [Father and Son/ Ruben and Joe] demonstrate their preexisting experience by bringing to the 5 Bells a much needed restoring of what existed years ago and what I've long wished would return to the 5 Bells. The menu/food is delicious (Sunday roasts recommended) seasonal and well presented, but the real reason I return frequently to the 5 Bells is the service! Because for me unless you feel welcomed and looked after with that personal touch it won't matter how good the food is! So add to that the history the presentation the aesthetics of this wonderful pub I'm hopeful it will only go from strength to strength and grow in its popularity and attraction to the surrounding populous as their 'go to' pub. Well done Joe/ Ruben and team.

Revisited after a very long break. Went with my sister who had the fish and chips. Fish very fresh batter light and crispy not greasy and lovely chunky chips. I had the lamb was told it would be pink and I wasn’t disappointed. The lamb was tasty tender and delicious. The veggies with it were just the right amount. Two very nice meals. The staff were friendly and attentive and listened to us reminiscing as we were born and bred in Stanbridge. So for us a lovely trip down memory lane.

Visited with my partner mid week for dinner and I was very impressed with the atmosphere of the pub. Lots of space, beautifully decorated with lots of candles. Staff were very welcoming, polite and accommodating. I ordered the special of the day which was pasta with beef cheek meatballs but unfortunately it was a bit disappointing. The meat itself was very good but my pasta was over cooked and was a bit mushy. The sauce was definitely from a jar and sadly a cheap brand as it was overly sweet and masked every other flavour. I did expect more from such a nice pub and since it’s the second disappointing dish I had there I won’t be visiting again for food.

Six of us had a lovely 3 course meal at the Five Bells yesterday. The food was delicious, perfectly cooked and plentiful. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Beer is excellent. One of our go to places. Looking forward to seeing the log fire burning now it’s turned colder.

We visited this pub for a wake. It was my first visit. The Red Lion is a lovely country pub with a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Two quality ales were available and appreciated. The buffet food was excellent. The experienced landlord made a point of checking that everything had been satisfactory. I am not local, but have family within reach and will try to visit again.

Sunday roast was terrible, potatoes dice size hard and inedible vegetables went cold very quickly and meat tough (what little there was of it) won't be going back

We go here for Sunday lunch on a regular basis now as the food is excellent. You get good sized portions, though extra roast potatoes are a must. Selection and menu are very good and the seating comfortable. They also have decent wine.
