The best restaurants serving British food in North East Derbyshire East Midlands

We haven’t eaten here for a while and to be honest never tried the Sunday lunch! All I can say is…. EXCEPTIONAL! When we arrived we were served and seated in the cosy rustic bar area with our drinks and presented with the menu. The belly pork and beef caught our eye. We were taken to our table by a friendly waitress, who kindly carried our drinks on her tray to where we were seated, which I thought was a nice touch. We were seated in the conservatory, which was a nice welcoming environment. My husband and myself both decided to have the Roast Rib of Derbyshire Beef, which came with a selection of vegetables (carrots, peas and cabbage) roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and a lovely dish of cauliflower cheese (which was amazing). The waitresses were friendly and attentive and nothing was too much trouble. After our main course we were asked if we’d like a dessert and offered the menu. I was feeling quite full until I saw they had a lemon curd cheesecake, accompanied by blackcurrant sorbet and compote, which took my fancy. We both decided to try. Oh my, it was one of the best cheesecakes I’ve ever tasted, the tartness was perfect, lovely base and textured cheesecake, sat on a swirl of lemon curd, which was also the cheesecake topping and a side of blackcurrant sorbet and compote. I can vouch that every part was homemade and was absolutely divine. Both of us savoured with delight. When the waitress came to clear our plates, I reiterated our pleasure, with the highest of compliments. We will definitely be returning and soon…! Thank you to all. ❤️

A good roast and attentive but not overbearing staff. Didn't stay in the hotel.

We regularly visit here and are never disappointed - the food is lovely but what makes the experience is the attitude of the staff. They are hardworking, pleasant, helpful, and efficient. So thank you from us x

We visited The Angel on Saturday for a meal, and it was SO DISAPPOINTING! There was nobody else in the restaurant and it was really chilly so not a great atmosphere. However our food was the worst part. I wish I had taken pictures of our meals, as they were so bad. I had the trio of sausages which was literally just 3 mediocre sausages and some chips. My partner had the chicken breast, which arrived with 6 chips, a cold cooked tomato, and a different sauce from what he ordered. The other members of our family said their meals were not great either. We’ve dined at The Angel many times over the past few years, and never had a bad experience like this one. We certainly won’t return.

Nice cafe cheap and welcome visit had five breakfasts most ok but the catering sausages are the worst in the universe tasteless mush revolting surely a modest price increase and we could have butchers sausages needs to improve.

1st time with mega bites, i had a breakfast delivered amongst other food for my colleagues.....awful! My breakfast had no toast, no black pudding, no mushrooms, egg cooked hard and hash brown extremely soggy with grease. Other colleagues had food missing too and said full of grease and chips disgusting. 1st impressions stick, will never go back!

The food here is generally good quality, fish and chips. Steak pie, breakfasts however, last year. We discovered they do Xmas dinner each week in December and after visiting several places for Xmas dinners, this was by far the best Xmas dinner we had so I emailed in November and was informed they're doing Xmas dinner every Thursday. Today 5th December 2024 we went and were not disappointed and was told from the 16th December they do Xmas dinner everyday. Real Turkey, stuffing, pigs in blanket, carrots, peas. Cabbage, sprouts, mash and roasties, parsnips, Yorkshire and some amazing gravy. Very well priced. Can't wait to go again this year and every year as long as I can Thank you

Greyhound Higham excellent host for Higham Hill Race. Very friendly, helpful and supportive.

Always excellent food in a lovely relaxed atmosphere. The place does get very busy so would recommend booking in advance.

Went in for Sunday dinner. Service was quick and efficient and food was very good. Also had some chocolate cake for pudding which was also delicious. Highly recommended to anyone in the area. Muddy boots and paws friendly too which is always a bonus. Will be frequenting the pub

Decent beer, great location and lovely building. Has been good in the past, but a couple of times - especially today - the staff have been very poor. A surly “pal”, “mate” and “chum”, and zero engagement doesn’t do it for me. Or anyone else for that matter. No wonder the pub was virtually empty while The Black Swan in spitting distance looked likely it was doing a lively trade. So sad.
