I love the old fashioned English pub in nice surroundings and this did to a degree meet all of that. The bar here is good with a great selection of craft beers, the abbey brewery one being particularly nice. The interior of this pub is a mixture of old and new but could i ask the owners to replace the worst wall paper I have ever seen in a pub. Supposed to look like stone with what appears to be a mock bookcase as part of the horrendous pattern this was a throwback from the seventies. It would not have been so bad had it not been put up by an amateur who left creases and miss matches all over. We came here for lunch which I have to say was very average. I had sausage and mash that wasn’t great. The sausage was the oddest I have ever come across and at first I thought it was one of those veggies things as the taste and texture resembled them. One of my friends had the duck burger and said it was delicious, the other two had the pub trades version of hunters kitchen which they said was very dry and both of them left most of it. Taking all into account including the outrageous price of pinot Grigio this vist was ok but it would need a lot of changes to compete locally and get me back again.

We always enjoy a sharing platter, and this was the best so far! A delicious selection of top quality cheeses and cured meats with homemade coleslaw, walnuts and artichoke hearts. So delicious and incredible value. Lovely friendly welcome and well kept hand pulled real ales. Nice atmosphere with a good mix of music in the background; a very cosy and comfortable pub. Well done team, credit to you! We will definitely be back! The only recommendation I would make is to try and sell the ale for a lower price if possible; there's plenty of competition in the area.

Went here for Sunday lunch after a long walk, so we were ready for some hearty, home cooked food. Unfortunately, the home it was cooked in must have been under siege as the mash hadn't been mashed, the roasts hadn't been roasted and the meat had clearly spent longer in the oven than it ever had in a field. Overall very disappointing and incredibly dry. 3 stars given as the pint of Old Peculiar was lovely and the service was good, plus they're dog friendly. Wouldn't eat here again but would pop in for a drink.

I visited with a group of about 20 people for lunch and we had pre-ordered the meals so as to be served at 1-15pm however the meals were served in dribs and drabs with the last people not getting their food until 2.10pm. This completely obviated the reason for pre-ordering and it would have been quicker for people to have ordered separately. There was no apology for the unacceptable delay. The food was mediocre.

Stopped here for food while walking. I have to be honest and say it was probably the worst burger I have ever had. Two meat patties were obviously frozen ones and dry as anything, chef must cooked the burger in fryer. Paid for some red onion too but there was literally 4 or 5 chopped red onion bits in it. Chips were not bad but best bit was beetroot buns. I would have scored lower but people were nice. I don't think this is what David invisaged when he set out to serve food.

Popped here for a drink, nice pub, dog friendly, and nice friendly staff. Based on this booked for Sunday dinner. Read some poor reviews, but thought we’d try it for ourselves. Roast dinner not good, only part of it that was really nice was the stuffing. Roast potatoes were hard and completely inedible. Told one of the bar staff who apologised and said they’d get us some more. They arrived, again hard and no sign of any rosemary or garlic as stated on the menu. Would you not check before serving again that you could at least get a knife through the potato?! In the end just paid and left. When paying, the bar lady said there had been several food complaints recently, so do something about it then. It’s not difficult to make a crispy fluffy roast potato. No offer of any discount made. I heard one of the bar staff say, ‘I just can’t cope with this anymore’ indicating this is not the only complaint. Would’ve loved to of met the chef and explained how to cook a roast potato! Poorly presented too, Yorkshire a bit soggy, everything seemed like it was probably cooked from frozen. Won’t visit here again.

Thought we’d give it a try with it just being taken over , unfortunately not the best . After getting the drinks ( run out of J2O’S and ginger beer/ale ) and ordering the it took half an hour for us to get 2 sandwiches which if the place was busy I’d probably expect but we were the only ones having food at that time , apparently an issue with the order going through to the kitchen but no one bothered to inform us that there had been an issue. The sandwiches were quite disappointing, not quite the bloomer bread we were expecting more like standard wholemeal sliced bread . Given there’s 2 other pubs with 2 mins I’d expect them to be on the ball . Don’t think we’ll be back .

Something seriously wrong here. Booked for family gathering 2 days before no food after an hour then the wrong meals for 2 of the only 3 to get served. Same food re-served with a pice of bacon and cheese on top (£13.99 meal). Chips were disgusting, suggestive of being fried in stale oil. We were then informed that there were no fish & chips as the fish ‘kept breaking up in the fryer’ After this revelation we demanded a full refund and left.

I ordered beef my husband ordered beef and pork. The portions were quite small and consisted of meat, small amount of mash, roast potatoes that were done in deep fat fryer, mange tout carrots and a Yorkshire pudding (which was nice). Lucas and Harley made our visit. We came from Lincolnshire for a walk and thought we would grab a drink before we headed home. Lucas gave us a warm welcome and was so friendly we decided to stay for food, he gave us recommendations on the menu and we had the duck dumplings that were amazing but the strawberry and balsamic salad was the best surprise, we both had the BLT for our main and it didn't disappoint, it came in soft bread with a perfect crust and with old fashioned proper cooked chips. Lucas pointed us towards the QR code that meant we could choose our music, which we did. Harley the chef came out front and made conversation, we even got to try some menu experiments that were delicious! What a beautiful pub but it was definitely the hospitality that has made our afternoon. Thank you and we will see you again!

I had a Sunday roast, with pork. The meat and Yorkshire pud was perfect. Veg was a little soggy. One of my party was vegetarian, and with very limited options, she opted for a Sunday roast with no meat. She was still charged the full rate, so the meat was served separately for the rest of us to eat. Maybe they should consider a veggie price?? Beautiful pub, currently having some refurbishment. I’m really sorry but this was probably the worst Sunday roast I’ve had in my life. Firstly the portion size was ridiculously big (clearly quantity over quality), beef and turkey sliced 1” thick was hard to get through, especially as the meat was so dry (I’ve heard of “well done” meat but this was “congratulations”) it took us two jugs of gravy to try and moisten it, which was tasteless and watered down, more like stock - or maybe got mixed up with dishwater. Never have I been served vegetables so bland and unseasoned, thrown on the plate. Roast potatoes should be a staple of a Sunday roast, but didn’t seem like they’d been in the oven? Mash potato also completely unseasoned with lumps of uncooked potato. Neither myself nor partner could finish the food. Looks nothing like the pictures on the internet, but they did mention they had a new chef last week - which in fairness you asked us to review. I now see similar reviews of Sunday roasts online so it doesn’t look like us having a bad experience. Hope you get this sorted. Going out to pay £20 a head for food, we’d at least expect something slightly better than we could do ourselves at home. Only positive was good gluten free options, just shame food isn’t up to scratch. Waiting staff were also great and we really appreciate the bill being taken off…but this isn’t how to run Sunday service or restaurant. We love supporting the pub trade and hate to not be charged (thought of pubs losing money is terrible, especially from working in industry), but this was really bad and verging on inedible.

Utter disappointment. We have to give 1 star for food as we aren’t given the option to rate 0. All of the Instagram posts of the Sunday roasts are not the black swans food pictures. The Sunday roast we got served (after an hour waiting when it was half empty) was nothing like they advertise. In fact it was all disgusting. As soon as they put it down it was cold and looked dry, the Yorkshire was laughable greasy and totally flat. No roast potatoes, they were half pieces of new potatoes. All bland. I told them we were not eating it and to remove it. The table next to us had to tell the waitress that they had left the string from the meat in her daughters meal and a fly in the mash potato 🤢 Cat fished by a pub! Don’t bother! Total waste of time. We attended for Sunday lunch , and the food was dreadful on the whole. It had changed hands since our last visit , and they seriously had gone downhill , they really do need a decent chef. I had soup that was both bland and unseasoned, and stuck to the spoon like mushy peas , (not liquid , as soups should be). Even a nice homemade thick soup isnt like baby food...the bread roll couldnt have been dipped into it...(more like spread on it )...🙄 The staff seemed very young , and one was totally out of her depth ! Asking if we wanted anything else as she was collecting my soup bowl...no , we just came in to share a bowl soup between 3 of us ??? My mother paid over £16 for a pie that was so hard , she couldn't get through the hard , burnt crust. I was served a cold side salad , with a very overcooked sweet potato and chick pea curry , I couldn't taste the curry it was so over sweet . It had no chunks in it , it was just another mushy mess... I'd expect maybe a naan bread , or poppadom , whose idea that salad was I don't know !! The butter with the "soup " roll , was obviously margarine, definitely not butter. All in all it was a disaster , no discount of any sort was offered , wouldn't go there again , needed to eat on the way home. Don't waste your money , my poor mums treat to us was ruined.

Beautiful pub , decorated for Christmas with a roaring log fire. We had an amazing Sunday roast sharing platter for 4 , between two of us and there was some left for tea 😀 We had mixed beef and pork, with all the trimmings . Couldn't fault it. Thank you

Nice friendly atmosphere but food terrible! Ordered fish pie (£18) which seemed to take forever to come and when it did I was shocked! Overcooked, dry as a bone fish ( no sauce !) with potato topping that tasted like cardboard. Absolute disgrace. Wasn't charged for it but really not the point as had taken my wife out to lunch for part of birthday present.

My friend and I decided to call in and have a bar meal, I opted for the fish pie, I asked what the seasoning vegetables were they informed me they were courgette, leeks and Carrots, I asked to leave out the leeks, which she said she would, my friend decided on the beef stroganoff with rice, we didn’t have to wait long and was really looking forward to it, I couldn’t have been more disappointed, the supposed salmon and cod in a dill sauce! What sauce?? It was a mush, the salmon seemed to have come out of a tin, and it was dry to eat, the vegetables were okish. this dish was definitely not worth £17. My friends stroganoff was bland, and the rice was like it came out of a 2 min microwave bag!! Let’s hope it was chefs night off! Good luck to anyone who takes the chance on eating here.

Popped in for a quick lunch and we were met with a friendly and cosy atmosphere. The member of staff behind the bar was incredibly friendly and made sure that we were well looked after. The food was very tasty and I would certainly recommend it to friends and family.

We had tried to get in for the pub quiz, and despite asking if we could reserve a table, our request was ignored. We were turned away on the evening by a rather rude bar person. We however did decide to give it another visit the next day for lunch. We were all very hungry, and the food was okay at best. Homemade chips a nice touch, and the kids cutlery was also a nice touch. I felt the lady serving us was rushed off her feet, but she was super cheery and polite. All in all average I’m afraid.

Nipped in on the off chance of being fed on a Sunday afternoon. It did not disappoint !! Lovely beef dinner with all the trimmings and gorgeous seasonal Veg. It’s very fairly priced in the area and I highly recommend you give it a try. Food is served until 4pm on a Sunday and I will definitely be back to try the normal menu during the week which has plenty to offer with a good selection of specials. The staff are very friendly and accommodating, Guinness is great and there’s a variety of beers available.

1 - lovely folk, poor food, sirloin steak with chips. Chips cold, steak terrible. Wine choice almost zero. This is hard to write because our hopes were high as staff and patrons raved before we went. Hope it was a bad night in the kitchen.

Lunch terrible . Lot on menu not available. Ordered Fish and Chips as a last resort. 2 of us sent back lots of chips, fish not good. No wonder pubs are closing down. Poor selection of wine.

It was a late afternoon quickie, so can't comment on the food. As a result there also wasn't much atmosphere. The service though was prompt, friendly and the beer I was served (Blue Moon) was good. Only real negative was the lack of decent beers (too much Carling and John Smiths type stuff).

Definitely a great British country pub feel. My son and I had the steak and ale pie and it was absolutely huge!! The staff were friendly and we liked the atmosphere. Got some funny first looks of the "locals" mind :-)

First visit to this pub, looked lovely from the outside had a few tables inside eating. The food looked great. Unfriendly welcome and only had carling on draught. We left as we didn’t feel welcome.

Visited for my wife’s birthday as this restaurant is quite expensive but very nice. Theres a big car park, there’s loads of places to sit in the bar and the restaurant is tidy and clean. Staff were friendly and helpful and they had put a birthday card on the table. Good low alcohol beer selection The food was delicious and attractively presented. My wife had the pigeon and I had the octopus which was a bit over cooked and tasters more like a bratwurst but surprisingly, with the other parts of the dish, tasted really good . We both had venison which was well cooked and good portion of new potatoes and courgette. My wife had the strawberry cheesecake and I had the peach Melba which was an interesting twist on the old favourite with warm peach slices, both dishes were tasty. My wife was given a plate with happy birthday on it with some brownie pieces and fruit and cream which was almost a sweet in itself. Not unique to Red Lion but why do restaurants take so long to bring the card machine? Will go again for another special occasion.

Booked for a 60th birthday meal with 17 family members. Service, quality of food and drink and staff were all outstanding! I don’t normally leave reviews however we felt we must recommend. Prior to booking we emailed our meal choices to the venue due to the number of us. Communication from The Peacock was excellent, emailing back to clarify on how certain dishes were to be prepared such as the steaks etc. Everything was very smooth, all meals came out together, everything tasted delicious and portions good! Staff members were very attentive, no one ever waited for extra drinks, cutlery, sauces etc. Overall an enjoyable night and we said we will return in future. Thank you ‘The Peacock’ for a making my dads 60th fab!
