Lovely landlady & landlord. So friendly and welcoming. We had halloumi kebab and steak which were both cooked to perfection. Has glass jars on the bar filled with phone chargers and plugs incase you’ve forgotten yours and also a jar full of reading glasses just incase you need to borrow a pair! How thoughtful! And the best part is they are very dog friendly. Dog treat station at the end of the bar. See you again soon!

A lovely traditional country pub. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. The food was reasonably priced and came out within half hour, which is pretty good for a Saturday night seeing we hadn’t booked. The chips on our meals were so good! Big fat and home made. My only criticism is my burger didn’t come with any sauce as advertised, the chef got one of my kids meals wrong and my husbands burger didn’t have spicy cheese, but had chilli sauce all over it making it quite unbearably hot to eat. However, that being said it was all beautifully fresh and we can’t complain and we would definitely dine there again if in the area.

What a super little pub. We stayed in Ashover for a week and had a wonderful time. Honestly we don't really go to pubs as a rule, but the Crispin is brilliant, it has a lovely atmosphere, very welcoming, and family friendly. We didn't have any food, but did observe other people with meals and it looked great. They have a great selection of beers. But the overriding feeling we both had was just pure relaxation. The bar staff were just excellent, helpful and friendly. We have just been back 27th September for a week for another holiday and had several visits to the Crispin. The experience was just as good as last time with the exception that we had an evening meal. OMG! This food is outstanding, my wife had the home made steak and blue cheese pie, mash and peas and I had the Crispin Chilli Burger, onion rings, triple cooked chips. We both had a taste of each other's meal, absolutely fantastic. The portions are huge. Ali is a great host and has a very capable team of helpful friendly people who are customer focused. Thank you Ali and Staff

Really enjoyed our visit to this lovely olde world pub in Ashover. We had a choice of 3 in the village and glad we ended up in this one. The decor and atmosphere were excellent, but the food was even better. The three of us all had the burgers and were hoping to have room for dessert - but were so full we couldn't manage one!! A very enjoyable meal and good drinks too. Thank you. 🍔🍔🍔🍔

Brilliant village pub with a fascinating connection to the past. Good selection of beers and friendly staff. Plenty of seating inside and to the frontage outside. A recent visit to The Crispin in Ashover turned out to be a "Total Disaster." from the outset. I will skip our waitress having no knowledge as to what beers and wine were available. When she came to take our food order she announced there were no Yorkshire puddings and no peas. If we were ordering fish and chips we could have that with beans and gravy !!! Gravy on fish and chips ???Unbelievable ! Fortunately we had not planned on fish and chips. Back to the extremely limited menu we both decided we would have rib-eye steak. Off she went with our order to the the kitchen. Within minutes she was back at our table to explain they were not doing steaks that day. Ok so we would go with the lamb/beef duo roast dinner, obviously knowing we wouldn't be served Yorkshire pudding. The last thing we really wanted was a roast dinner. Within minutes a different waitress appeared and announced sorry no lamb but you can have extra beef. Why we didn't get up and leave at this stage I will never know. We genuinely felt sorry for both staff members as not their fault. Finally our meals arrived. The beef was dry and tough piled on top of mashed potatoes with 3 small roast potatoes and 1 tiny roast parsnip accompanied by a small dish of cauliflower cheese plus a dish of fresh mixed veg which were acceptable. I then asked could we please have spoons for the veg dishes only to be asked how many spoons would we like ? In our opinion this is an establishment that leaves young, untrained, inexperienced staff to face any issues that should happen to arise and in our experience the issues were numerous. We made it quite clear to the staff we didn't blame them for our disastrous experience and tipped as we would normally do having paid full price for incomplete meals. It is some considerable time since we ate at The Crispin and I'm afraid we will not be returning. Neither will we be recommending to anyone. The excuses of orders having not been delivered by suppliers as to why so many things on the menu were not available a little odd We also found the place itself had a dingy feel to it. It could be so much better. This review is a genuine account of our recent visit to The Crispin, Ashover.

First interaction with the pub was a grumpy bartender. From booking a table right through to paying. We were looking forward to tonight based off recent reviews. The bartender chose to point to the soft drinks in the fridge with her shoe and couldn’t really be bothered to say which flavours were available. Menus dumped on the table. Told by bartender holding her vape that it was a restricted menu being served that evening. Food arrived quickly- average at best. Steak and Ale pie was dried up and the peas looked like they had been in the microwave. Went back to where we were staying for toast! Expensive and un enjoyable experience.

I visited recently with friends on a weekday evening. There was a very poor selection of meals for vegetarians. I asked the waitress what the "Vegan Burger" was made of and she assured me it was made solely of vegetables. I confirmed with her that it was therefore a vegetable patty type of burger and she confirmed it did not contain soya, TVP, seitan or anything similar . When it came it comprised a rather dry white bread roll with a couple of lettuce leaves, one slice of tomato and two miserable looking burned (but cold) brown circles of indistinguishable origin. I have no idea what they were and was hesitant to eat them. To be honest, a couple of slices of cardboard would have been tastier, and at least I would have known what I was eating. I would normally have complained about such a dismal offering and asked for a replacement but I was on an evening out with friends and did not want to embarass them by returning my food to the kitchen. Also staff had made it clear that they would not take food orders after 7.45! The menu showing on their website is not what they are offering in the pub either, had I known we would not have gone in the first place. Total rip-off, we will not be returning. Please employ someone in your kitchen who can read a list of ingredients, understands the meaning of vegetarian and can actually cook. The only positive part of our visit was that the barmaid was friendly and polite, so much so that I didn't want to complain to her.

Four of us ate ate at the Crispin one Saturday night in February. We had pre-booked a table, which was probably the best idea as there were quite few people eating. The staff were friendly and welcoming, providing a good service. Dogs on leads are permitted in most areas, except the dining room. There's a car park in front of the pub plus free on street parking. The bathrooms are clean and tidy. We each had 2 courses, a bottle of wine and beers - £56 per couple. The food was served on hot plates, very tasty and sizeable portions. Two of us had smaller sizes of fish and chips, together with a cod loin. The liver and bacon apparently was "excellent"! I'm not quite sure how we made room for the crumble, but we managed, and it was splendid. Make sure you are hungry before visiting! The atmosphere is comfortable and relaxed with a good number of local people visiting - always a good sign. A good place to visit.

We came here for a little bit food after a walk in the beautiful village of Ashover, when we arrived we just wanted something to eat before we drove home however we did not realize what a treat we were in for. I ordered a burger and my partner ordered a lamb and beef dinner, what arrived was a monster burger and a Sunday dinner with the most tender meat I have ever tried. The patty on my burger was very good quality, the cheese seemed to be made specifically to compliment it and the home made chips was to die for, even though I was so overly full half way through I managed to muster the power to keep eating because my tongue wouldn't allow me to stop. My partner was the same and she made me eat some of the beef and lamb, wiping the sweat away from my brow I managed a mouthful of both meats to which my taste buds acted like they had just scored the winning goal against Germany in the 90th minute in the world cup final. After we had finished I paid the bill which seemed cheap for the food we had just consumed and we have recommended this to every person we have seen since.

Nothing special. We were a large family group, we were seated in a back room I assume due to the size of the group (12 people). Felt like we were an inconvenience. We asked if they could turn the speaker on so we could hear the music that was playing in the main pub to be met with a blank look and “I don’t know”, a few minutes later asked the other bar staff girl to be met with similar blank look and “I don’t know” response (no offer to actually try or find out!) . Staff weren’t unfriendly, but they weren’t friendly either. I think the word to describe them would be indifferent. Food expensive for what it is. Me and my sister in law had fish and chips. Huge fish that tasted of absolutely nothing. Light out in the ladies loo so sat in pitch black to use the loo. Generally gave a bit of a “Royston Vasey” vibe. If you know you know!

Went today for lunch and was sadly very disappointed. We’ve not been back here for 10yrs and had great memories of excellent food which we went back for again. Sadly this was not the case, my wife’s chicken burger was dry and heated pre cooked strips. My Sunday lunch had what tasted like smash type potatoes, with awful dry vegetables and extremely chewy at best meat. Not at all worth the £50 we paid, our best meal was my daughter’s chicken nuggets and fries. Such a shame.

We visited yesterday for a Sunday Lunch, the food was amazing! The pub & atmosphere was beautiful! However, the service wasn’t great at all. We didn’t have one specific waitress, we had about 4 (& they obviously weren’t communicating with one another). We had one seat us, another to take the drinks orders, we weren’t offered any menus until another waitress came to take our order & realised we hadn’t been given any menus, which was about half an hour into being there. We then waited another 20 minutes to order. Took about half an hour until our food came, then we were missing a meal. By the time we had all eaten, the missing meal then came out. We were waiting for our plates to be cleared and hopefully get a dessert menu but we’re left sat with empty plates on our table for another 15/20minutes so we decided to get up & go to the bar for our bill instead. Within our order, we had a meat free roast dinner but was still charged the full amount of a roast. Overall, we paid £140. But you could’ve got more if your waitresses were more on their game, communicated with one another & we’re more organised. The food was beautiful but the service really let your pub down.

The food was very good. The girl who served was good, but the person who appeared to be the owner attempted to rip us off by overcharging for the mixed grill. It was a shame that this happened because otherwise it was an enjoyable meal. Re the owner comment. This just makes it worse. Acknowledging that you have made a mistake on the menu and then still trying to charge for an item that is not on the menu without telling us, trying to sneak it through on the bill (ie an extra £10 in total) is not appropriate. The menu stated the large Mixed Grill was £29.95. This is what we ordered. There was no indication anywhere that there were three sizes plus the mixed grill challenge. If you make a mistake, you acknowledge it and take the loss. That is good business practice and encourages people to return.

Came for a meal last night and booked a table for 6:30pm. Was 1 of 2 groups in for food when we we were seated and was told that there was no chicken or gammon. The vegetables served with one of the meals weren't cooked, one meal was missing onion rings (although didn't know if we were mistaken because I didn't have a menu to hand until after). Also a small bone found in the Lamb Shank. We waited a long time for someone to come and clear the table and ask for desserts, it didn't happen. A customer on the other table asked to order desserts and was told the "kitchen closed at about 7:15pm". Neither us or the other table could have any desserts and we have never been to anywhere where they take a booking and then don't give you time or warning to order desserts. Went down to the Old Poets after for desserts and they couldn't be more attentive and polite. Wish we'd have gone there for the full meal.

I used this pub in the 60/70s I called in last night, a bit apprehensively as the last time I called I walked away. Probably about 20 years ago. It had gone a bit to far up market, that's why I've not been anywhere near it for another 20 years. Driving past last night I pulled up, seen the dog bowls and walked in with my springer spaniel. Well! it's back on my list. Lovely friendly pub with good beer and good food again. Hope it doesn't get someone else in with bright ideas before I turn up my toes. Geoff Rawson

I had the lasagne which was amazing but I was not given a dessert menu which I was looking forward to but the staff never came to our table to ask us if we had finished or wanted anything else

Possibly the worst lunch I have ever had - garlic 'bread' burnt, chilli prawns just small prawns in awful sauce, chicken burger consisted if chicken gujons in a bun (nice fresh lettuce/tomato in it) with stale chips. Wasn't expecting fine dining but this was truly awful. Lady serving was very nice but overworked.

Nice pub. Food was OK but nothing special. Young chap behind the bar was pretty uninspiring as if we were an inconvenience to him. Other than that OK.

Just had Sunday lunch here and it was excellent. Great value for money, generous portions and served pipping hot. Recommended.

This is the 2nd time in a matter of days that my husband and I have been to the Crispin for lunch and both times it has been a fabulous experience. Home cooked food and plenty of it!!!!! We had the roast sunday chicken and beef dinner on Sunday which was fabulous, just how it should be 🙌🙌❤️❤️. Large portions and cooked perfectly, everybody who enjoys a roast should come here it’s fantastic. Martin is an amazing chef and even though I was stuffed to the hilt I had to indulge in their homemade sticky toffee pudding for dessert ❤️. We will definately be back, sooo wonderful tomhave home cooked food when not at home. Thank you it was deeeelish

Too many problems and successfully spoiled an evening. The young girl who served the pint, leaving 30mm of head, sullenly tried to get it right and after two more attempts including spilling it over the bar never apologised. The food actually was okay BUT up selling in the hospitality world is a must. After the meal no one cleared the table, no one asked if we needed more drinks, no one offers desert menu and no one offered coffee. Three more chances to make money missed. As I paid the bill (no tip of course) the phone rang and the response from the staff was “oh no!” Customer service nil. We went to the Poets for our drink.

arrived 1:45pm on thursday after a walk. the prices of starters and steaks are higher than other pubs. we ordered steak pie, lamb shank, sandwich and pate were tasty but the chips were not triple cooked as stated in menu. the desserts mixed berries crumbles and bread and butter pudding were delicious.

Average to poor food with little care. Overcooked fish, unseasoned veg, incorrect orders, warm soft drinks with no ice, etc.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here. The chef is fantastic. We had steak and ale pie and the beef melted in our mouths. The chips were chunky and gravy just as its meant to be.... Hot and rich and plenty of it. Highly recommended x

Good pub with onsite brewery and a plentiful selection of local beers/ales as well as wines/spirits etc. Friendly staff and atmosphere.

We visited on November 1st, 2024, and sadly, it was quite a disappointment. While the bar staff did their best, the kitchen service was very underwhelming. By 6:30 PM, they had already run out of the special main menu on the board! The food took a long time to arrive, and when it finally did, it was subpar. The steak & ale pie was more air than a hot air balloon and hardly had any meat. The crust was burnt and tasted like a heated-up frozen pie. The chips were clearly shop-bought oven chips. This was not the level of service we had experienced before. We left feeling quite disappointed. It seems the place is being sold, and I hope the new owners can bring back some quality!
