The 3 of us met up locally for a walking weekend in Peak District and booked here for a dinner. Fabulous food, and lovely staff. We shared the Parmesan and Red Fox Arancini with truffle mayonaise starters. Yummy. Two of the party opted for the Pithivier (squash, spinach, smoked cheddar in pastry), and reported them to be delicious. I chose the sea bream with langoustine bisque, saffron potatoes, and mussels and it was heaven!! we shared a lovely pinot grigo. Friendly, cheerful waitress. was very helpful. Chris Mapp (owner and chef) visited tables afterwards, and divulged his secrets about the pithivier. He has challenged my companions to make their own, and to email him photos of their attempt. .... :-)

We came to celebrate our anniversary and had such a lovely evening. We only live round the corner and visit occasionally for drinks but haven’t had a meal here before. When we arrived there was an anniversary card on the table which was so thoughtful. The staff were all incredibly attentive and pleasant, they really looked after us. I had the arancini to start and then the blade of beef. It was all delicious, I could have licked the plate. When I put my fork into the beef, it just fell apart. The cabbage side was incredibly tasty, mash creamy, red wine jus was rich but not over powering. Every element of the dish was so well cooked and flavoursome, the best food I’ve eaten in a long time. My husband also enjoyed his meal and we both loved the wine (an Australian Shiraz, I can’t recall the name). Finished with scrumptious desserts and coffee. Everything exceptional. We need to visit more regularly!

Ate here whilst staying across the road at Millfield farm cottages(5.minute walk). What a find! Lovely atmosphere, friendly, efficient staff, but the real star of the show was the food! Deliciously prepared and beautifully presented it was perfect. They serve the usual pub grub but go for the dishes obviously favoured by the excellent chef and you won't be disappointed. A nice touch that Chef came to each table after service for feedback - it was all positive! Highly recommended.

Excellent Sunday lunch!! Superb, tasty and fresh ingredients as always. It is the place for us to go for good food, friendly service and a lovely relaxed ambience. We also had the pineapple dessert which was amazing. Please keep up these very high standards because there are so many other pub/restaurants that are cheaper but for consistent good value and service, we always choose the Trout.

Just been for the first time and sorry to say we won't returning. Food was not up to scratch, burger just warm and pizza too well done too hard and nearly broke teeth trying to eat it. Charged £5 for a bottle of water. Not good enough for the price charged. Then had the cheek to try and put a £6 service charge on. You are just a pub not a top London restaurant. Could do better in our opinion.

Visited for Sunday lunch. Easy to book online and dog friendly (in the bar area.) Good menu selection plus pizza menu if you prefer. Went for a combo of roast beef and roast pork. Served with all the trimmings plus a side order of cauliflower cheese for good measure. The beef in particular was incredible and melted in the mouth. Pork wasn’t far behind - both were beautiful. Friendly and efficient service throughout, making for a very pleasant Sunday lunchtime. Would highly recommend. One final point: We had a voucher that we didn’t spend the full amount of. There were no arguments about the balance, they simply refunded it onto our debit card. Again, great service with no fuss.

Service is sooooo bad, food is okay. Time and time again the service is just shocking ! We returned in the hope that it had changed. If you delivered your food as quick as your review responses we wouldn’t have an issue!!! Arrived for our booking which we made via the website to be told no booking for us. Had to show the email confirmation. No big issue Food arrived after 45 mins. Ordered desserts and waited another 45 mins, had to ask for our bill as desserts hadn't arrived. The main issue when you take a massive booking for the room upstairs, the rest of the restaurant suffers. We’ll not mention Christmas Day when you refunded half our bill because the service was so bad and we were told we weren’t allowed roast potato’s but that’s another story. Great reply to our review, rather than apologise you come back with a snotty ‘don’t come back’ reply.

This place is overlooking a very picturesque view. There is a small car park to the rear of the property. It has very limited parking spaces, with only one disabled parking space. There is parking available on the side road, but it is a residential area. The entrance at the front is accessible for people with disabilities. However, it could be difficult for wheelchair users. There may be other doors more suitable for wheelchairs and buggy. The restaurant is very light and has an airy feel about it. You are made to feel very welcome as soon as you enter. With the friendly staff you can't help but feel confident that you will enjoy your time there. Being able to wear smart, casual, and even hiking clothes when you go is not a problem. The menu has food to cater for vegans, vegetarians, and those who enjoy meat and fish. The Sunday roast is exquisite, and you are unlikely to be disappointed. It is clean and an enjoyable atmosphere. It is not a cheap place to eat but serves quality food. It has a 'sister' restaurant further along the road that is more dressy, which I will be visiting at some point.

Been here a few times over the years and had and amazing burger here back in 2019 and been back a few times since but only on Sundays (no burger on Sundays unfortunately) Came today for a family meal and all really enjoyed the food. I had the burger which was amazing just like the last time I had it. Big big burger with a lovely soft texture and really rich strong flavour. I'm not normally a fan of aging extra unnecessary things to a burger but the slow braised pulled short rib on top was also really tasty and went perfectly with the melty textured burger. It came with thick chips which were also amazing. Perfectly cooked and crispy on the outside but fluffy soft inside. My wife had the arancini start which was lovely. Four small but very very tasty squares of perfectly cooked rice and cheese! Everyone else also really enjoyed their food (rarebit sandwich, trout and the spatchcocked chicken special) Lovely friendly service from all the staff. Will definitely be back again and I would highly recommend this place!

Not very dog friendly...complained that our dog barked a few times,as we could only stand by the door,as some people came in and out it frightened her and she barked maybe half a dozen times...nothing major and there was a regular guys dog who also barked..especially when we walked in..seemingly the waitress was asked ..presumably by the manager to ask us to leave..though I cant confirm that...she made out someone was complaining but I don't believe that as no one took any notice of us...Its certainly not very dog friendly...which is ok..not all pubs are...just don't advertise that it is a dog friendly pub..simple Reply to owners comments : I find it interesting that any negative feedback is responded to by giving a different version of events..?..rather than trying to discredit any feedback by altering the events, maybe you would benefit from trying to make improvements on customer service and take any constructive criticism and work to get better. And for info, having a dog menu doesn't necessarily mean that you are dog friendly,it requires patience rather than after few barks asking owners to leave.. and then accusing owners of not ' keeping' their dogs well behaved...it doesn't quite work like that I'm afraid..

Just had a very strange dining experience. Was really impressed when we arrived. A very warm welcome and very happy with the table. All looking good. So I ordered the crispy beef teriyaki. Really good sized portion and so tasty. I was slightly concerned that if this was the starter how big would my main be. I shouldn't have. It was really small. 1 very small fillet of sea bass for nearly £30. Don't get me wrong it was really good but it was far too small. And then my little one asked for a taste I gave her a fork full which was a quarter of my fish. So I order desert. Raspberry savarin. The savarin hadn't been soaked so was really dry and heavy. Bill came and my 2 large glassed of Rosé came to just short of £40. I clearly didn't check that properly. So it started out with much optimism and just slid away. Edit. I did raise the food issues at the time, especially about the savarin. The response was 'sorry, I'll tell the chef'. And that was that. The wine was my fault as I should have read the list properly. That's the problem of being visually impaired. I would return but would choose more carefully.

Recently retired and moved to the area and I have been trying local pub grub out. When my adult son and I were celebrating the day before Mother's Day (to avoid crowds) we booked here on impulse after a day of hiking. Oh my goodness; the food was simply amazing. What a find! It felt very 'Gastro Pub' dining and well above all the standard of previous places I have tried. My son raved about his beef starter and we also, thankfully, ordered the Tarte Tatin (needs 45 mins booking) for dessert. I loved the truffle chicken; how do you make it taste SO good? Loved the mash too. Maybe I would have liked more veggies as I was very hungry. My son loved the amazing gourmet burger and I helped him eat some of those fantastic big chips. Slightly too salty for my personal taste, but it did not stop us eating them. Back to that Tarte Tatin; simply the best ever dessert I have, honestly. The balance of caramel glaze, soft apples and buttery pastry was incredible and we loved sharing the plate. This was quite exceptional. I hope this is a regular on the menu and not just the Specials. In total, we had a celebratory meal with the best food and ambiance. Excellent and attentive service from young staff (but everyone looks young to me) and they really represented the care and attention to detail we found in the food. My son does not live in this area and commented that the food here was better than anywhere local to him in Buckinghamshire. I'd rather dine out less often and go here for a treat, It was slightly more expensive than other pub grub, but way better in so many ways that I am happy to seek out quality rather than quantity. We will return and I plan to recommend Tickled Trout to everyone I know. Really exceptional food and beautiful surroundings. I am so impressed and we have found our new favourite place to dine.

I tried to book this place a few weeks ago but their website was down. I contacted them but no one came back to me. I probably should have trusted my gut because now my guts are suffering. Not only was the customer service questionable (& by the way they make you pay for that as mandatory!) but the food was delivered quicker than my microwave pings. Whilst you could say that is a good experience, the amount of oil on my food was creating a separate gravy of its own. The drinks finally arrived to drown the taste away but the food is definitely not worth the money. Shame, as has such potential. The place was pretty empty although they’re very strict on where you can sit too. I wouldn’t normally leave a review, so please note this was for valid reasons.

We had to pre-book as we were a party of 8, not sure of this is normal, as there is still the same amount of tables in restaurants, and do tables of two have to pre book? Anyway, we sat down, and main course came out within 10 minutes. We wasn’t asked if we wanted any starters, straight into main meal, missed out on 8 starters.! meat was perfect, but was expecting a side bowl of veg or something other than what was on our plates. and the dessert was the same, very small portion. A great menu to choose from, the calzone pizzas were excellent (although mine was served in a cold plate) and the sticky toffee pudding was superb. We will be back

I rarely review restaurants these days because we don't eat out much unless we are on holiday. Overall, the experience was good. My only real complaint was the lack of a wine list, which meant we ended up paying an expectedly large amount for 4 glasses of wine. The food was good, nearly excellent, and only missing that mark by small faults. The pizza base was doughy. It just needed a little longer cooking. Everything else was delicious and filling, but some dishes lacked refinement given the price. The fish and chips were great, especially the house made chip shop curry sauce. 😘 The halloumi starter tastes fabulous, but it was just lumped in a shallow dish with no garnish. I know this is picky, but I'm not complaining so much as suggesting improvement. The service was good and I am sad that it wasn't busier because it is one of the better places to eat in the area. Having spent two weeks in Looe, Cornwall this September, I can see what they are aspiring to be. They just aren't quite hitting the same levels. Don't not go because of this review, you will have good food, just ask about the drinks prices. 😉

Today we had the most wonderful afternoon at the Tickledtrout in Barlow. We hired the private dining room upstairs to celebrate our wedding. The service has been second to none, and everyone commented on how wonderful the food was. Thank you to all the staff, and the chefs for a great experience. We look forward to returning in the not too distant future.

Very well appointed venue - a cross between a Gastropub and restaurant. Service was excellent - attentive but not intrusive. As for the food the highlights of what we had were the spiced cod scotch egg which was absolutely fantastic (nice and spicy mayo with it) and the Derbyshire pie. I suppose the only thing I might quibble would be that the sides portions could be a bit bigger but that doesn’t detract from a lovely relaxed evening. Would go there regularly if we lived a bit closer.

Welcoming, relaxing and delicious food! We enjoyed a lovely dinner last night at the Tickled Trout, great menu with excellent choice/variety and food excellent. The staff were were warm and friendly on a horrible cold evening, the fire was gorgeous and the music entertaining without being intrusive. The restrooms are beautifully appointed. Thanks for a great evening - we will be back again soon.

I decided to book here on a fellow chefs recommendation. I think Chesterfield is becoming one of the best places to eat and tickled trout shows why on every level. Great welcome, didn't feel out of place. Prompt service and menu was well laid out. We went for scotch egg starter and halloumi starter. Both excellent. For mains the truffle chicken and special sea bream, again both perfectly cooked and very tasty. Service throughout was very good, never had to get attention of anyone as the girls were always around. We was in and out in 70 mins.. had a expresso too. We were told about service charge which didn't bother us.. More on the expensive side, but if you want great food and service, worth every penny. We will be returning soon. Thank you

First time visitors after hearing a good few things about this place Initial thoughts as we walked in was a nice clean are and restaurant, decent sized tables, chairs could do with a clean Before I continue I’ll say that I do understand the area of the place it’s situated in, however… You cannot charge £8.95 for a quarter skillet of chorizo and humous and 2 tiny pieces of bread, it’s scandalous, and simply a rip off. The pea and ham soup my friend couldn’t finish as it tasted so bad, so I tried it and had 1 mouthful and couldn’t eat anymore of it (it takes a lot for me not to eat something) The mains came and was ok, however I wouldn’t even say it was lukewarm, all mains were cold. The only thing that came hot was the pigs in blankets Moving on to the sides - £5.95 for 4 florets of cauli cheese? Come on, £2 for extra gravy? Its comical Head chef must be living in GP heaven, as a whole it all seemed a tad overpriced for what you got and not served hot. Basics in a kitchen. had better carvery’s We aren’t ones to make a fuss on check back, the waitresses were nice and service was ok, we aren’t ones to ask for items taken off of the bill etc but definitely won’t be returning.

Hi jacked when paying my bill at the bar with a 20 % service charge . Why is this not mentioned anywhere on the menu or in the pub ? . I always leave a tip of 10% . This 20% is the cost of another meal !! If you’re not making enough on your product please put the cost up ! If you’re not paying your staff enough please put their hourly rate up !! Please do not stealth tax your customers. The meals the four of us had were excellent and my pie was the best I’ve ever eaten but I will not be eating here again unless this issue is addressed. Thank you for your response to my issue .But you havent addressed the automatic adding of the charge to the bill . If we were a party of 10 then i could understand a charge and if you stated somewhere before we ordered that a 12% charge was to be added I wouldn`t have assumed with my math that it was 20% .So please see my point about the charge being a stealh tax on your food

Visited for my wife’s birthday as this restaurant is quite expensive but very nice. Theres a big car park, there’s loads of places to sit in the bar and the restaurant is tidy and clean. Staff were friendly and helpful and they had put a birthday card on the table. Good low alcohol beer selection The food was delicious and attractively presented. My wife had the pigeon and I had the octopus which was a bit over cooked and tasters more like a bratwurst but surprisingly, with the other parts of the dish, tasted really good . We both had venison which was well cooked and good portion of new potatoes and courgette. My wife had the strawberry cheesecake and I had the peach Melba which was an interesting twist on the old favourite with warm peach slices, both dishes were tasty. My wife was given a plate with happy birthday on it with some brownie pieces and fruit and cream which was almost a sweet in itself. Not unique to Red Lion but why do restaurants take so long to bring the card machine? Will go again for another special occasion.

First of all 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Take a bow and give yourselves a massive pat on the back to the whole team. It is very rare I give a shout out to a small pub in the middle of know where that is producing such high quality food and of such a high standard. For lunch we were late but they went above and beyond and knocked up a fish finger sandwich and a chicken club with chips on sourdough. It sounds simply but it was amazing especially the bread, so feed that back to the bread supplier. Evening meal was beetroot tart for the guest and then the king prawn for me. Great to eat the line removed from the prawns, so many 5 star restaurants fail in this but this little pub exceeded expectations. Main was beef for the guest and monk fish for me again both delicious and pudding was carrot which again was great. Breakfast was quality produce and cooked fresh, again very well received. If you have not been, then I suggest you book in asap as this place if 5 stars, no sorry 6 stars in the food and service delivery. What a wonderful little pub that needs to be visited by anyone passing. Overall well done to all, even the guy in pot wash. 6 stars out of 5 from me 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Booked for a 60th birthday meal with 17 family members. Service, quality of food and drink and staff were all outstanding! I don’t normally leave reviews however we felt we must recommend. Prior to booking we emailed our meal choices to the venue due to the number of us. Communication from The Peacock was excellent, emailing back to clarify on how certain dishes were to be prepared such as the steaks etc. Everything was very smooth, all meals came out together, everything tasted delicious and portions good! Staff members were very attentive, no one ever waited for extra drinks, cutlery, sauces etc. Overall an enjoyable night and we said we will return in future. Thank you ‘The Peacock’ for a making my dads 60th fab!
