Disappointing Dining Experience at The Peacock At Owler Bar Not Worth the Hype Yesterday, my partner and I visited this restaurant, drawn by its charming location and inviting pub-style interior that initially set a promising tone. The menu was extensive, featuring creatively named dishes accompanied by prices that suggested a high-quality dining experience. However, our anticipation quickly turned to disappointment. For starters, I ordered the scallops priced at £13.95, expecting a generous portion. To my surprise, the dish consisted of just two scallops and a single prawn in sauce—a meagre serving that fell short of expectations. Moving on to the mains, I chose a dish described as 'prawns with noodles.' What arrived was essentially a bowl of noodles with six prawns—again, not aligning with the menu's description. My boyfriend opted for the Sunday roast, which was equally underwhelming. The plate featured one carrot, one parsnip, and roast potatoes that were poorly prepared. The overall presentation and quality did not justify the price point. Adding to our concerns, nearby diners accompanied by a dog were vocally dissatisfied with their meals. We overheard them complaining about undercooked chicken, which is a serious food safety issue. In summary, the quality and portion sizes of the food did not match the premium pricing. The experience was disappointing, and I would not recommend this establishment to others.

Popped into The Peacock on my home from the peaks. First time I've been there. The interior is amazing and the young lady who served my drink was very pleasant. The only downside is that the pint of Guinness was £6.95. More of a restaurant than a pub.

We came to the Peacock at Owler Bar after a very disappointing experience at another pub close by. I'm really glad we did! As soon as we walked in we were greeted by friendly helpful staff. The venue has just been done up and it is lovely inside. The menu includes lots of local produce. And freshly made dishes. I am coeliac and need to eat gluten free. There were multiple options on the menu. I opted for prawn noodles with satay hoisin sauce.. sadly it turned out that I couldn't have the sauce after all so I had the noodles with soya sauce instead. My friends had a vegan burger and a chicken ciabatta, both of which were enjoyed very much. We will come back again.

Upon booking we thought the menu sounded good and were looking forward to coming. Unfortunately we were disappointed. The quality of the food wasn’t nice especially for such expensive prices. They claim the meat is locally sourced but my beef was chewy and gristly and the food was luke warm like it had been left on the side, I could’ve made better roasties myself they were bland and dry. The other parties also had issues with their food. We told a member of staff & were offered a free round of drinks which we politely declined as we were almost ready to leave and upon paying nothing was deducted from the bill (which would’ve been courteous of them to do so given the issues). Wouldn’t return which is a shame. As others have said, it was much better quality when it was Chef & Brewer. Maybe don’t buy ‘The White Company’ hand soap and lower your prices a little?… and serve better quality food.

Me and my partner came a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it but tonight was such a disappointment. I chose to come here for my birthday as they have pretty much everything gluten free as my mum is celiac. They have done an excellent job with the interior but it’s just a shame they haven’t done the same with the food. I understand that it’s locally sourced but it doesn’t warrant the price at all! Here is a list of things that weren’t good; My nephew had the children’s ’Fish & Chips’ and absolutely no where on the menu did it state that it was beer battered nor what kind of fish it was. £8.95 my parter had a Sunday dinner which had bland potatoes/veg and the meat was full of gristle. £21.95 My mum had the pan-fried chicken supreme that came with potato purée but for some reason the purée was really lumpy. £19.95 My dad said that his pie of the week tasted like it was cooked in a microwave as the pasty were really soggy. £19.95. My sister said that stir fried noodles with the king prawn option was also bland. £21.95 Finally my nephew wanted the child’s brownie with vanilla ice cream but when it came they give him the adult version which was £9.95. The size of it was ridiculous and even he asked where the rest of it was. (I have attached a photo) Luckily I did enjoy my burger so I guess that ok….

First visit after the new guys have taken over and given the old place a makeover. We were not disappointed. We were greeted with a lovely smile from a young man (I didn't get his name but he was definitely an assett to the venue) he told us a little bit about the revamp and the picture that hangs in every one of their venues. I'll leave that for you to discover. Service was everything you would want it to be. The food was lovely and very well presented. And joy of joys, linen napkins, sometimes it's the small things. There was a little wait but it was busy. Very impressed. We shall definitely be back. I love the history of this place too, Grade II listed and built over 200 years ago in 1818 as a coaching inn, you can feel the history and imagine the coaches coming across the turnpike in the middle of winter. I would think the coaching inn was very busy then too. The revamp is sympathetic to that and has retained the charm.

However we were all very extremely disappointed. The food was honestly inedible, I couldn’t even get my knife through my burger! The service was even worse. Nobody even came over to take a drinks order and were waiting over an hour for food. Fair enough if we would have been told there was a long wait time. Unfortunately, none of us will be returning.

Visited last Thursday after hearing that it had been refurbished and under new ownership. What an improvement!!! There is still a bar area, which is dog friendly and serves food. However, we went through to the dining side. It is beautifully decorated and nicely spaced tables. Our waiter for the evening was a very friendly and polite man called James. He knew when to leave myself and my friend to chat, and when to ask if we needed anything. He gave us some assistance with the menu and recommend a very delicious dessert. Neither of us had a starter, as we already had our eyes on the desserts. But after much deliberating ( I could have eaten anything listed, they all sounded yummy) I settled on the crown of pheasant with blackberry sauce and dauphinoise potatoes. My friend chose the noodles with fillet steak. She was asked by James how she liked her steak cooked. We both tried each other's food 😋 ( we're good friends) and they were delicious. And as we were both driving we didn't choose wine. There is a good selection of drinks to choose from including local ales. After a suitable break we opted for desserts. I had the white chocolate and freeze dried raspberry tirimisu which was quirkily served in a kilner jar, and my friend chose a pineapple and ginger crumble. Again both were delicious and were a suitable size. Not over-faced nor tiny. Altogether, a delightful evening and we agreed that we would both return ASAP ... I would definitely recommend.

Me and my wife visited for the first time today having wanted to try here for some time. Upon entering it was a good first impression, lovely setting and nicely decorated etc. However, the waitress that served us was not the most friendly and the food, most importantly, was sadly disappointing. We both ordered the pie of the day having seen somebody else have this which looked really nice. Unfortunately it looked far better than it was. The pastry was clearly not fresh as it was rubbery in texture (as if it had been warmed up in a microwave) the filling was quite dry and the mash that came with mine had a film over it as if it had been sat under the hot lamp for a while. Additionally, the portions of mash and veg with the pie for £22 each, were far from generous. It was sadly not particularly hot either. Very disappointing for the money and did not live up to expectations. To add to this, it was slightly disconcerting to witness (as my wife did) a member of the waiting staff spitting in the sink in the toilet. Overall disappointing and will not be returning.

Staff and service were excellent the new decor was also excellent unfortunately the main meal can only be described as a disappointment being fairly regular customers at the Maynard and the george we expected better. My cod was undercooked my partners had the pheasant crown which she described as tasteless. Why is the food served on the rough glaced dishes which make a most awful noise when cutlery is scraped against them. In future we will stay with the Maynard and George or Ashford as we have not been disappointed at those venues

High quality ingredients on an imaginative menu and great service (thanks, James) set this place apart. Only a little more expensive than other so called restaurants (where your food is delivered in a van and warmed up on the premises) and absolutely worth it. We both had indigestion in the night, my husband a bad acid reflux. We are sad as we love the other hotels in the Longbow group, and are regular customers. Firstly. If that was the January slow month , your all gonna have to book from February onwards. It was massively busy for lunch. Infact. Only a couple of small tables were free unless you braved the outsides. We were welcomed and were found space as walk ins . Food was excellent. Everything came out looking bistro style, fresh and unpretentious. Staff were proffessional even under huge pressure. Plenty of management on hand pitching in. I can't fault it in any way. Was it perfect. No, but for the amount of people , the quality of the food served and the excellence of the staff. I'd say it was as close as you could expect within human abilities. Locals were very much at home. Dogs were treated well, whims were accounted for. Really. This could have been a top notch place in the lakes except the prices were much more competitive. You have done wonders. I wish you well. You have a bright future. Keep up the hard work. You deserve much success and custom. We will definitely be back.

We called in lunchtime midweek as we had been many times in the past and always had a good meal, however we did not realise it was no longer a Chef & Brewer. We found that there were no longer a variety of classic dishes to choose from. We opted for the Seabass and the Chicken dishes and found both underwelming as the portions were small and quite bland and both were accompanied with only a small amount of veg and salad. We did by chance notice on the table was a card stating 30% off meals at the moment which was quite fortunate as all the meals were at least 30% more than what you would find in quite a few pubs in the area so taking all this into account we will definitely not be returning and would not recommend to others as everything seems very expensive for what you get. Beautiful pub, with lovely fire and historic wooden beams. The staff are lovely too, with very quick service, really chatty and (most of all) let me borrow a charger when my phone had died!! Very welcome end to a walk, I'll definitely be back here.

Big disappointment, yes they have been operating 4 weeks, but steak shouldn't be chewy and tough, chips should have crispiness about them? It was my wifes birthday and I had high expectations, we gave our feedback gracefully, we paid in full and even tipped our server, but the birthday turned out to be a flop... Really hope they turn things around as we really want new businesses to make a success of things.....

1st time here and everything was excellent even though they were very busy...our waitress Amelia was fantastic..a credit to the business . We will be back...one suggestion is that they offer cash back on card payments which they currently do not..it would be a handy facility for customers

Had a 'great British pub voucher' and after a lot of research picked this place off the voucher website as it looked really nice. After a 40 minute journey we arrived only to be abruptly told the pub had changed owners and no longer accepted the gift card (zero apology), a wasted afternoon for a family who very rarely gets a day off together. The owners need to liaise with the voucher website so others don't get duped into wasting a rare family day out.

Main meal was beautiful but it was Sunday lunch, the dessert though, wasn't to my liking, they could review the pudding menu, their crumble wasn't very nice, wished there had been more of a choice

After a shocking Christmas Day meal (or lack of) at the Cross Scythes we were desperate for a decent family meal out. The Peacock saved our Christmas 2024! Fantastic service, lovely food, cosy atmosphere. Exactly what we needed. And great with my two year old - the Peacock 🦚 to colour in on the back of the menu kept her entertained for ages. We’ll be back!

Very smart building and facilities. Staff very attentive, pleasant and efficient. Food, a bit disappointing: triple cooked chips very soggy and old fashioned,no mozzarella in the chicken ciabatta sandwich and not much pulled pork in the pork ciabatta sandwich. But, we will give you another try.

Decent tasting food but overpriced for the quality you get - compared to other places in the area each dish is a couple of quid more but no better. Service took far too long. To eat three courses took almost 3 hours. Insane wait time and not informed as to why or given any decent apology or acknowledgment of the poor service. Staff were friendly but doesn’t make up for the chaos. Heard all of the surrounding table complaining about wait time too

From the moment we walked in, the service was excellent. A smile greeted us and we were shown to our table immediately. We informed our waitress, Ruby that my mum was colieac and she explained the owner is wheat intolerant and that most of the meals on the menu are or can be adapted. She also knew that colieacs can also be affected by cross contamination so will check that any meals we order are prepared separately. Ruby was excellent, very knowledgeable about the food and preparation needed for my mum. The food came quickly and the service very friendly and efficient. The food was superb, really tasty and presented very well. Highly recommend this place and all of its team. Well done and thank you for making my mum feel so at ease with her colieac requirements.

We recently visited The Peacock at Owler Bar and were absolutely blown away! Rob and his team have done a fantastic job with the refurbishment – the place looks stunning, with a perfect blend of modern comfort and traditional charm. The food was exceptional, with every dish cooked to perfection, and the service was just as impressive. A special thank you to Leona, our waitress for the night, who went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed. Her friendly and attentive approach made the evening even more enjoyable. We’ll definitely be back and highly recommend The Peacock to anyone looking for great food, excellent service, and a beautiful atmosphere. Great work, Rob and the team!

Good value for money, small portions and lacking seasoning. Took a long time to serve the 3 courses. There was also poor communication around allergens, there were missing items rather than alternatives offered

The pub has been given a new lease of life by new owners @longbowvenues . This pub is a beautiful old building every bit as lovely as their other Venues. You are welcomed by friendly service, a roaring fire and beautiful cosy interior. 🍽️The food is of course wonderful and ever reliable as at all longbow Venues. We were spoilt for choice by their broad menu but tried a mixed meat sharer starter which was super tasty 😋. Mains were a wonderful beef and red wine pie, stuffed to the brim with large steak pieces- they really are the best here! We also tried the lamb shank Rogan josh which was a fantastic winter warmer with lamb that just fell apart - beautiful. 🍰The dessert menu is also impressive, and we chose Bakewell tart, and a Minni pavlova - the perfect way to finish a meal. 🍷We also loved the wine, and tried their house white and an incredible dessert wine to finish the meal. 🌱Almost everything on the menu is gluten free , and there are plenty of vegan options here too! There is something for everyone. 💸We highly recommend calling by soon to take advantage of their opening deal of 30% off -

We visited on November 1st, 2024, and sadly, it was quite a disappointment. While the bar staff did their best, the kitchen service was very underwhelming. By 6:30 PM, they had already run out of the special main menu on the board! The food took a long time to arrive, and when it finally did, it was subpar. The steak & ale pie was more air than a hot air balloon and hardly had any meat. The crust was burnt and tasted like a heated-up frozen pie. The chips were clearly shop-bought oven chips. This was not the level of service we had experienced before. We left feeling quite disappointed. It seems the place is being sold, and I hope the new owners can bring back some quality!

First time visit. While the wait time for our Sunday lunch was more than we would have expected, the food itself more than made up for the delay. The slow roasted rib of beef, cooked on the bone, was perhaps the the best roast I've ever had, utterly delicious. Dessert was equally good (bakewell tart) I would definitely recommend a visit.
